Calvary’s Mission Statement Carried Out by Endowment FundsBy John Fischer, Calvary Endowment Funds Chair

Paulson Scholarship Fund Blesses StudentsThis fall nine Calvary kids will be off to pursue post-secondary education with the support of their home church. This was made possible by the generosity of John and Norma Paulson who created the Calvary Endowment Fund’s Paulson Scholarship Fund. Each year the Fund awards scholarships to Calvary students who apply and this year a total of $13,300 was given to nine Calvary students.John and Norma Paulson generously endowed this fund out of their own passions and life experience. Mr. Paulson began his career with technical training that allowed him to start a career that ultimately included real estate and other business pursuits. The Paulson’s desire to give kids the resources to gain the needed education to follow their dreams

is reflected in the criteria by which grants are awarded. Each candidate is evaluated and award-ed scholarship based on (in order of importance): • type of program (those pursuing technical

training are given highest priority) • first year students are given priority (to en-

courage those who might be wavering in their ability to afford their education)

• those students with financial need • Calvary involvement, academic eligibility, faith

statement (weighted equally)John Paulson passed away on June 7 and his lega-cy will be defined by many things—one of them is his generosity which has made a difference in the lives of dozens of Calvary students and for this the Calvary family is so very grateful.

Calvary’s mission statement, “To lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ” is a powerful statement for a powerful church, fueled by a powerful God. For many, this mis-sion statement serves as a call to use their financial resources to spread Calvary’s impact around the world and right here in Golden Val-ley and the Calvary Endowment Funds is the vehicle. Whether it’s funding for Calvary’s staff to support internal programs (Congregational Ministry Fund), or by assisting students with post-secondary education (Paulson Family Scholarship Fund) or helping kids attend sum-mer bible camp (Nicholas Duelo Camper Schol-arship) or by endowing a particular ministry as the Lindbergs did with their Youth Ministry Fund, Calvary’s Endowment Funds make our Mission Statement truly come alive.

The impact extends beyond our local community to places all over the world through the Out-reach Endowment Fund and the Maynard and Nancy Nelson Missionary Scholarship Fund. To some it’s hearing the Gospel for the first time in their native language. For others it’s providing the tools to grow and harvest food to help save a starving village. You too can play a part. Many different stories, many different results but all with the same goal and purpose—to bring someone just a little bit closer, to let them know just a little bit better, their relationship with Jesus Christ. Concordia’s Student Worship Receives GrantYou know God’s hand is in something that explodes from nothing to suc-cessful in a short period of time. At Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., a student led worship experience called The Remedy has grown from seven passionate students to over 200 weekly worshippers in just a couple of fruitful years. This growth led the student leaders to see a need to own the sound equipment required for each week’s gathering, not just borrowing it weekly from other students and local churches. It is this need that prompted three Calvary kids (Holly Brettingen, Hope Brown Johnson and Heidi Michel) who are The Remedy’s leaders, to submit an application and subsequently receive a grant for $2,500 from the Outreach Endowment Fund to purchase this equipment.By supporting Calvary’s own college students who are boldly living out their faith and mentoring others, Calvary’s

mission to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ can extend beyond our church’s walls and even out of Golden Valley into a northern Minnesota col-lege campus. The Endowment Board responded to this opportunity, to multiply the impact of the Holy Spirit’s power through these Calvary students, and is rejoicing for the new opportunities this equipment will give them to worship and spread the gospel.
