Smart Planning for Smart Networks

Intuitive Project ManagementThe Project Wizard helps you to rapidly set up a project from a selection of system-specifi c templates. EDX SignalPro will instantly display a map view with relevant GIS data for your chosen area, which can be selected by simply entering a city name. A project management tree lets you see all the components of your project at a glance. Click on any component of the tree to expand and edit details.

Convenient Equipment Controls Intuitive toolbar buttons and menus make it easy to add and manage your network equipment. Templates can be set up for convenience and the EDX Vendor Partner’s equipment specifi ca-tions can be accessed by brand name from the available equip-ment library. Equipment can be quickly accessed for editing and project grouping with convenient right-click commands or menus. Groups are easy to create manually, by rectangle selection, or with convenient selection fi lters that include “and/or” searches. Global edits can be made to entire groups or sub-groups for quick changes, or equipment details can be quickly imported/exported to Excel and external databases. EDX SignalPro gives you the most detailed equipment defi nition parameters available. Antenna patterns for isotropic, directional and leaky coax are supported with co-polarized and cross-polar-ized directional transmit and receive antenna considerations. For more accurate interference analysis, you can also describe the Power Spectral Density and receive fi lters for your equipment. Parameters are fl exible enough to accommodate any technology for fi xed, nomadic and mobile networks.

EDX® SignalPro® is the principal building block of EDX’s comprehensive line of wireless network engineering tools. It offers all of the study types you need to design a basic wireless network, including area studies, link/point-to-point studies and route studies. EDX SignalPro also incorporates the fi nest telecom-specifi c mapping features, meticulous equipment data storage capabilities and convenient utility functions. Basic EDX SignalPro can be extended to become a fully featured and comprehensive network design tool by attaching the EDX network design and indoor modules, specialized query toolkits and data management products. This building block approach gives you the ability to create the right tool for your specifi c needs – putting the Power of Smart Planning to work for you.

Area/Coverage StudiesA comprehensive selection of over 18 area study types: • Shadowing/Line of Sight • C/(I+N) & Aggregate C/(I+N) • Path Loss • Group-To-Group Interference • Field Strength • Bit Error Rate • Received Power • Percent Service Availability • Downlink Signal Levels • Number of Available Servers • Uplink Signal Levels • Simulcast Delay Spread • TIA TSB-88 Reliability • Height Required For LoS

Additional studies are found in the Network Design Module.

Unmatched Area Study Capabilities For any EDX project, you can set up as many area studies as you like - each based on unique parameters and considering the same or different transmitter Groups. With the click of one button, EDX SignalPro will simultaneously calculate all studies. Easy mapping controls then allow you to view one at a time, layered together with transparencies, or tiled/cascaded on your monitor. For Boolean “and/or” comparisons of two existing studies, “Hybrid” studies assist you in customizing area studies for your unique needs.

Full Point-to-Point Path AnalysisCalculate a full microwave path analysis including path profi le, rain/fade outages, percent availability, dispersive fade margin, antenna diversity reception, and cross-link interference. All links are bi-directional, and provide plots to show sensitivity for variation in the k-factor. You can edit your link on the path pro-fi le display -- add trees, buildings, or terrain modifi cations, and an interactive view displays real time link analysis as antenna heights are changed.

Route StudiesUse a route study to calculate and store detailed propagation properties along a 2D or 3D route, providing map view and text report information unique to each point of the study, includ-ing Most Likely Server, Received Signal Strength, etc. Routes contain a series of specifi c points that can be easily created with the included EDX drawing tools.

Propagation ModelsEDX SignalPro is a rigorous wireless network engineering tool. At the core of the tool, you’ll fi nd a comprehensive set of RF propagation prediction models, appropriate for systems from 30 MHz to 60 GHz. EDX SignalPro lets you select from an extensive set of over 20 published propagation models, custom-ize the coeffi cients of selected empirical models, or create your own proprietary propagation models with an external dynamic link library. All models have adjustable environmental and reli-ability parameters. Further, you can select a unique model for every base station sector in your study, or use a single model for the entire study. Additional model options are available in EDX’s Add-On Modules and via connectivity to integrated tools such as Siradel’s VolcanoLAB. For refi ned accuracy, the physical/deterministic models can consider the attenuation and height values of underlying clutter databases at the receive location or at each study point.

Clutter Use for Fast 3D ModelingEDX SignalPro provides an innovative way to effectively model a 3D environment. A Clutter Carving™ technique is used to provide a realistic description of the street canyon propagation environment in which the network operates. The technique provides network designers with the ability to build a reasonable location-specifi c model of the environment without purchasing building/structure databases. Just a few simple steps: • Add relevant height values of terrain, based on underlying clutter categories • Overlay the resulting 3D clutter model with GIS data, such as streets/major roads/highways/interstates • Assign the width of the “carve”, specifi c to each GIS category. The GIS data “carves” into the 3D model, back to the terrain height accordingly.

Query CapabilitiesExtensive abilities to query your project include query libraries accessible by other applications as well as the ability to right-click on any point to view multiple layers of propagation analysis and GIS information. You can also select entire areas for query analysis.

Utility FunctionsUtility functions are easily accessible for coordinate conversion, distance and bearing calculations, ERP calculations, intermodu-lation calculations and creating and plotting antenna patterns.

Smart Planning for Smart NetworksThe Network Design Module, when added to EDX® SignalPro®, is a fully featured, comprehensive wireless network planning tool. It is ideal for all stages of network design – from initial deployment through network maturity, with special emphasis on automatic processes, traffi c, and interference considerations. Included in the Network Design Module are specifi c feature sets for designing WiMAX Systems, LTE Systems, other Mobile and Nomadic Systems, Multipoint Systems and WCDMA/UMTS Systems. This sheet covers only the features that are specifi c to WiMAX systems.

User-Defi ned Area StudiesIn addition to the simple Hybrid Studies found in basic EDX SignalPro, you can design your own area study analysis via an external DLL using a customized or pro-prietary study algorithm. This advanced network design feature enables you to tailor the software as needed.

Dynamic System Studies With the dynamic characteristics of OFDMA systems, it is uniquely challenging to determine if your network design is rigorous enough to withstand the expected traffi c demand on your network. EDX has several approaches to help you evaluate your designs.

Stochastics: Based on uplink capacity reports generated for each sector, an area study displays the probability of achieving traffi c demand at each point in your study grid. Additionally, a received signal versus interference distribution profi le is generated that shows you how many study points are interfering at each signal level. This graph shows you how many of the expected grid points are experiencing high interference conditions so that you can model multiple iterations, resulting in a network designed with interference integrity.

System Operating ParametersA comprehensive set of WiMAX standard profi le templates are included for easy project initial-ization. In addition, you have full control over system parameters including handoff thresh-olds, permutation zone allocation, FFT, channel bandwidth, frame duration, cyclic prefi x and TDD ratios with uplink and downlink defi ned sepa-rately where appropriate. Designing your system is straightforward, effi cient, and intuitive.

Overlay SystemsIt is easy to set up and study overlay systems with mix-tures of different technologies at each cell sector. With simple right-click commands, sectors can be grouped together and activated/de-activated for traffi c planning, frequency planning, and analysis in multi-technology systems. When all the settings are defi ned, EDX Signal-Pro can simultaneously calculate and display selected studies for all systems within the project.

Preamble Code PlanningSpecifi c to WiMAX and LTE systems, automatic preamble code planning assign ID codes to each selected sector, taking into account the potential for interference. Codes can also be put “in reserve” to provide for future network growth.

Automatic Frequency PlanningFor WiMAX systems, you can do demand-based auto-matic frequency planning with included standard chan-nel plan templates or imported channel plans. Select EDX’s simulated annealing algorithm for optimum channel assignments or utilize your own algorithm via an external DLL. There are customizable QoS and capacity objectives, as well as consideration for already locked channel assignments. For complete fl exibility and in support of overlaid systems, frequency planning can be done to all sectors, or a selected group of sectors.

Specialized Area-Wide StudiesIn addition to the basic studies in EDX SignalPro, the Network Design Module offers technology-specifi c stud-ies for mobile and nomadic systems:

• C/(I+N) Ratio Using Channel Assignments • Uplink & Downlink Adaptive Modulation Data Rate • Uplink & Downlink WiMAX OFDMA Modulation Regions • WiMAX Uplink C/(I+N) • WiMAX C/(I+N) Areas for Focus Sector, Activity Based • Second Most Likely Server • Handoff Regions

Neighbor List

Neighbor list calculations are based on received power most likely servers (up to the 3rd), best channel most likely server (interference sensitive), channel plans and handoff criteria.

Traffi c LoadingAutomatically calculate traffi c loading on individual sectors based on real service areas and a selection of multiple service types. You can generate a report on sector loading or use the information for channel assign-ment calculations. For packet-switched traffi c distribu-tions, the estimated traffi c is based on your defi nition of multiple service mixes such as voice, e-mail, web browsing, audio streaming, and video streaming. The traffi c distribution is weighted on relevant market criteria such as traffi c, land use/clutter databases, or by uniform distribution.

WiMAX Capacity AnalysisIn order to address capacity analysis for multiple service levels and scheduling techniques, the uplink and down-link capacity analysis considers the following character-istics:

OFDMA adaptive modulation types in use, including required C/(I+N), and data rate (user data rate after FEC) for each type

Multiple user profi le demands and activity levels, based on average data demand and activity factor percentage

Smart Planning for Smart NetworksThe Network Design Module, an add-on module to EDX® SignalPro®, gives you a fully featured, comprehensive wireless network planning tool. It is ideal for all stages of network design – from initial deployment through network maturity, with special emphasis on automatic processes, traffi c, and interference considerations. Included in the Network Design Module is a specifi c feature set for designing LTE Systems. The Network Design Module also includes specifi c feature sets for WiMAX Systems, GSM, CDMA-1X, Multipoint Systems and WCDMA/UMTS Systems. This document only covers the features that are specifi c to LTE systems.

User-Defi ned Area StudiesIn addition to the simple Hybrid Studies found in basic EDX SignalPro, you can design your own area study analysis via an external DLL using a customized or pro-prietary study algorithm. This advanced network design feature enables you to tailor the software as needed.

Dynamic System Studies With the dynamic characteristics of OFDMA systems, it is uniquely challenging to determine if your network plans are rigorous enough to withstand the expected traffi c demand on your network. EDX has several approaches to help you evaluate your network designs. Monte Carlo: To analyze the dynamic performance of LTE systems, a Monte Carlo simulation technique helps to determine uplink characteristics of your planned system based on channel assignments and subscriber traffi c loading. Stochastics: Based on uplink capacity reports generated for each sector, the Stochastics area study displays the probability of achieving traffi c demand at each point in your study grid. The predictions are based on the likeli-hood of the required Resource Blocks having suffi cient CQI to support subscriber traffi c. Additionally, a received signal versus interference distribution profi le is generated that shows you how many study points are interfering at each signal level. This graph shows you how many of the expected grid points are experiencing high interference conditions so that you can model multiple iterations, re-sulting in a network designed with interference integrity. The uplink interference statistical distribution for each sector obtained from the Stochastics study can be used to determine the predicted uplink interference level for each LTE sector.

System Operating ParametersA comprehensive set of LTE standard profi le templates are included for easy project initialization. In addition, you have full control over system parameters including Intra-LTE and Inter-RAT handoff thresholds, channel bandwidth, cyclic prefi x FFR (Fractional Frequency Reuse) and TDD uplink/downlink ratios. Designing your system is easy, effi cient, and intuitive.

Overlay SystemsIt is easy to set up and study overlay systems with mixtures of different technologies at each cell sector. With easy right-click commands, sectors can be grouped together and activated/de-activated for traffi c planning, frequency planning, and analysis in multi-technology systems. EDX SignalPro can simultaneously calculate and display selected studies for all systems within the project.

LTE Cell ID and Cell Group ID PlanningUser-programmable Cell ID and Cell Group ID naming conventions provide either automatic or manual assign-ment while keeping track of previously assigned values and blocked value ranges - making it easy to correlate with other KPI and network measurement evaluative data.

Traffi c LoadingAutomatically calculate traffi c loading on individual sectors based on defi ned service areas and a selection of multiple service types. You can generate a report on sector loading or use the information for channel assign-ment calculations. For packet-switched traffi c distribu-tions, the estimated traffi c is based on your defi nition of multiple service mixes such as voice, e-mail, web brows-ing, audio streaming, and video streaming. The traffi c distribution is weighted on relevant market criteria such as demographic, traffi c, and land use/clutter databases or by uniform distribution.

Specialized Area-Wide StudiesIn addition to the basic studies in EDX SignalPro, the Network Design Module offers LTE-specifi c studies for mobile and nomadic systems: • Uplink and Downlink C/(I+N) Ratios Using Channel Assignments • Uplink (SC-FDMA) & Downlink (OFDMA) Adaptive Moduation Data Rate • Uplink & Downlink LTE Modulation and CQI Regions • LTE Uplink C/(I+N) using Stochastic and Monte Carlo Simulations • UE Power when using Power Control • Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) R1/R3 zones • Inter-Cell and Inter-RAT Handoff Regions

• Full downlink and uplink reliability analysis on each radio path • Uplink and downlink interference analysis • An automatic ring network layout constructs links to connect an arbitrary set of buildings to be served

Interference CapabilitiesFor all interference studies, choose whether the C/(I+N) and BER studies use noise only, interference only, or noise + interference in the calculations. Advanced capabilities of this module also make it possible to consider interference from a consecutive point network operating in the same frequency range as your PMP system in your multipoint analysis.

The Network Design Module, an add-on module to EDX® SignalPro®, gives you a fully featured, comprehensive wireless network planning tool. It is ideal for all stages of network design – from initial deployment through network maturity, with special emphasis on automatic processes, traffi c, and interference issues. Included in the Network Design Module is a specifi c feature set for designing Multipoint Systems. The Network Design Mod-ule also includes specifi c feature sets for WiMAX/LTE Systems, Mobile and Nomadic Systems and WCDMA/UMTS Systems. This document only covers the features that are specifi c to Multipoint Systems.

Realistic Multipoint AnalysisThe Multipoint Systems features of EDX’s Network Design Module add the ability to do true point-to-multipoint anal-ysis with hub stations serving a set of Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), each with independently defi ned RF parameters and geographical locations. It is not a “grid” analysis simulating multipoint, it is an actual multipoint analysis that can provide simultaneous uplink/downlink and TDD system analysis. These multipoint studies are in addition to the included area-wide studies showing line-of-sight, signal, and inter-ference analysis for large areas.

Multipoint StudiesEDX’s comprehensive point-to-multipoint (PMP) system analysis considers each network hub and each uniquely defi ned CPE. PMP studies include: • Received signal levels downlink and uplink for each CPE • Interference levels downlink and uplink for each CPE • Fade margins downlink and uplink for each CPE • Adaptive automatic power control on uplink to achieve reliability or fade margin targets (iterative approach takes into account changing interference levels from uplink power levels at the CPEs) • For any CPE, view a list of fi ve strongest interferers for both downlink and uplink • Select FDD or TDD multiplexing. TDD analysis considers CPE-to-CPE and hub-to-hub interference in addition to normal hub-to-CPE and CPE-to-hub • Full multiple access capability for evaluating TDMA and CDMA systems using any modulation type including OFDM • Link reliability analysis for each CPE, both down- link and uplink. Analysis includes fade and rain outage effects. • C/(I+N) using channel plan (area-wide study) • Best server based on best channel (area-wide study)

Microwave Link AnalysisThe multipoint studies calculate a complete microwave path analysis that includes rain and fade outage, percent availability, dispersive fade margin, antenna diversity reception, and cross-link interference. Correlated rain fade can be selected for interference paths for more realistic C/(I+N) results.

Consecutive Link Network AnalysisFor multiple link systems such as backhaul networks, there is a comprehensive consecutive point network (CPN) system analysis using links in tandem, ring, or mesh topologies. Studies include:

Specialized Area StudiesSpecifi cally for Point-to-Multipoint wireless broadband systems, the Network Design Module includes essential, carrier-class, area-wide studies: • C/(I+N) based on Frequency/Channel Plan Assignment • Most Likely Server Based on C/(I+N) • Strongest CDMA Pilot • SDARS Interference

Automatically Estimate Your System CapacityThe Network Design Module can automatically lay out multi-sector hubs as well as CPE systems. You can use the automatic CPE layout features to help you estimate demand in your service area. For instance, you can have the Network Design Module distribute a set num-ber of CPEs in your service area, group-by-group. Each group would have a unique traffi c demand (uplink and downlink) and RF equipment settings. Each group can be automatically distributed in your service area, with placement being weighted by meaningful criteria such as: land use (clutter) data classifi cations; demographic data by city block; traffi c data; building rooftops; or uniform & fi xed grid. Once you have your multiple groups set, you can combine all groups in your fi nal system analysis in order to estimate the total demand on your network, taking into consideration the many customer confi gurations that you expect.

Traffi c ModelingThe Network Design Module automatically predicts traf-fi c for each sector, estimating the total data traffi c load in Mbps per sector. The loading is generated based on the requirements of your defi ned services (voice, e-mail, web, etc.) and weighted by land use data, demographic data, traffi c data, or uniform distribution of traffi c.

Automatic Frequency PlanningEDX offers an exclusive demand-based channel as-signment algorithm for studying Point-to-Multipoint networks. This algorithm provides much greater capacity than block channel assignments using frequency re-use theories. Downlink-only assignment is also included if you only want to consider hub-to-hub interference. Also, for each CPE you can specify up to 8 uplink and down-link channels. This unique capability gives you more fl exibility in designing fi xed networks.

OverbookingWhen assigning channels you can put multiple users on the same channel to achieve the desired service level.

Automatic Power Control Automatic Power Control (APC) adjusts to overcome noise and interference. The APC objective can be set by the user as percent service availability or fade margin.

IEEE 802.16For all types of 802.16 systems, the Network Design Module includes appropriate propagation models, OFDM-specifi c equipment parameters, study types, and network design features. Whether your custom-ers are fi xed, nomadic, or mobile, you have the com-prehensive features you need to design your network and plan for future growth.

AntennasTransmit and receive antennas can be specifi ed as full 3D patterns. Polarization, mechanical beam tilt, and beam tilt azimuth can be specifi ed independent-ly. Supports both co-polarized and cross-polarized directional transmit and receive antennas.

Features

Mesh AnalysisSignalMX gives you powerful analyses for mesh networks through specifi c studies and displays that are meaningful for mesh architecture. These analyses: • Determine path loss between all Access Points (APs) using point-to-point link calculations that take into account terrain, buildings, and clutter • Calculate received signal at each AP from all other APs • Calculate interference at each AP from all other APs based on frequency or channel • Take into account directional antennas

Automatic AP and AMI router LayoutSignalMX provides automatic layout of cells/Access Points (APs) and AMI routers. Whether you’re in the bidding process, initial deployment, or planning for growth, the power to auto-matically distribute APs and mesh routers in your market area will give you the ability to quickly plan your network to meet capacity demands. The automatic distribution of APs and routers is based on market-specifi c databases such as census/population informa-tion or land use/clutter specifi cations, and can make use of databases that provide potential locations, such as geographi-cally referenced street lamp databases. An intelligent “snap to intersections” feature places APs at street intersections to make the most of street canyon environments. Multiple groups of APs and routers can be automatically generated, with each group having specifi c RF parameters and distribution techniques, providing for easy modeling of multiple service level agreements. The advanced mapping features in EDX software let you display aerial photos and satellite images as map backgrounds, and adds to the ease of laying out mesh and AMI networks.

Automatic Selection of AMI RoutersStreamline AMI router placement and selection by using this RF-optimized selection feature. The feature will select the minimum number of routers to cover meters based on receive sensitivity, maximum number of hops for meters, and maximum router distance. A balanced router selection mode can also be used to include maximum number of meters per router.

Automatic Selection of Gateway Nodes Based on Backhaul ConditionsThis feature automatically identifi es and assigns nodes as gateways based on the best connectivity conditions to a WiMAX or Multipoint backhaul network. Save time and make it easy to reliably repeat network designs with consistent criteria.

Automatic Traffi c LoadingModel the traffi c in your service area with more accuracy. Auto-matically calculate traffi c loading on individual nodes based on real service areas and a selection of multiple service types. You can consider multiple service mixes such as voice, e-mail, web browsing, audio streaming, and video streaming.

Planning with Routing InformationIn order to do meaningful traffi c analysis on mesh networks, it is important to consider the routing techniques used by equip-ment. A generalized “fewest hops to the gateway” routing technique and distance limitation settings are included. SignalMX also includes Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that provide for proprietary routing algorithms to be used in your traffi c analysis and what-if scenarios.

Use Clutter for Fast 3D ModelingSignalMX provides an innovative way to effectively model the 3D environment. A Clutter Carving technique is used to provide a realistic description of the street canyon propagation environ-ment in which the network operates. The technique provides network designers with the ability to quickly build a reasonable location-specifi c model of the environment without purchasing building/structure databases. This innovative feature adds relevant height values to ter-rain, based on underlying clutter categories and GIS data, such as streets/major roads/highways.

Smart Planning for Smart NetworksSignalProof™ maximizes the value of your engineering studies calculated with EDX® SignalPro®, making them available for post-processing purposes. Embed this toolkit into your web service and automate service level pre-qualifi cation for your network subscribers. Likewise, use this toolkit to enhance the information provided to your call center customer support team.

Reduce Customer Acquisition and Retention CostsSignalProof is an innovative and adept way to reduce customer acquisition and retention costs by using your prediction studies to fi nd and keep your customers.

How does it work?Geo-Location is First:

The power of SignalProof can be accessed in two ways:

• Visually: From your website, your customers can use the Google™ Earth interactive map-to-location tool through SignalProof to fi nd the place where they want to receive your service. Based on their click, the geographic coordinates from Google Earth are passed to SignalProof.

Quality of Service is Determined Next: SignalProof uses the selected coordinates to query your actual EDX SignalPro prediction studies. You confi gure SignalProof to access one or more studies and determine whether the selected location is within your required service level thresholds.

Customers Get Immediate Feedback: A response is instantly sent back to the customer telling them if service is available.

Polygon FiltersSignalProof can also use polygon fi les when searching for results. These allow an unlimited number of areas to be designated as absolutely “served” or “not-served” independent of the predicted performance at these loca-tions. This allows a quick update of the pre-qualifi cation process without having to re-do the engineering study.

Completely Customizable The interface confi gurations that query the prediction studies and the information returned to the customer are completely customizable in the toolkit. You select the criteria used to qualify service levels, decide which prediction studies you want to use for the process, and present your customer with your customized marketing information.

It’s an Easy Return on Investment Your customers pre-qualify themselves, signifi cantly reducing the number of service calls and truck rolls. You can even collect valuable marketing data in the process by knowing who wants service but is not able to receive it.SignalProof is easily customizable and can also be used in batch mode if you have a specifi c list of addresses where you want to identify service opportunities.

Use it to Enhance Your Call Center SupportYour technical support team can use the same query capabilities to troubleshoot self-installation connection problems. By having the ability to compare prediction data with live link data from the equipment, you can sig-nifi cantly reduce the customer equipment returned due to installation problems.

Details for Your Web DevelopersThe SignalProof toolkit comes with a general-purpose user interface and sample reports for the study query confi guration that strongly follow the Model-View-Control philosophy. With standardized web interfaces, the service provider web site can easily make use of this toolkit ap-plication with Java Servlet Pages. Results are provided directly over a standard network protocol (HTTP, FTP, WebDAV, RPC, or CORBA) and can be stored in data fi les for unique post-processing needs.

The web services included in SignalProof are indepen-dently functioning tools, allowing for development, execu-tion and maintenance on separate servers. The engines are constructed separately from the presentation interface, isolating proprietary data from publicly accessible web servers. Microsoft Windows® and Linux operating sys-tems are both supported.

It Just Makes Sense Make the most of your network planning tool investment – get this powerful, post-processing toolkit and put your engineering data to work! SignalProof is a specialized, carrier-class application that can be used with prediction study results from EDX SignalPro.
