Blessings & Bits By Reverend Billie Martini

New Year, New Me!

The above headline grabbed my attention. New Year, yes, it’s inevitable, January 2015 is almost here.

New Me? What’s wrong with the old me?

The old me:

Has 28 plus years of sobriety;

Has been married a total of 46 years, 22 to my greatest teacher and 24 to my soul mate and best friend;

Has given birth to a son who is a compassionate, smart, enlightened “40 something” young man who wows people as a mental athlete;

Has a beautiful, caring daughter-in-love who is the wife of my prayers for Brad;

Has rescued many, many dogs and cats over the years, loving and caring for them and being unconditionally loved in return;

Has a vocation, a fulfilling calling to ministry, to minister and support people on their spiritual journeys, celebrating their Divinity and their greatness;

Has family, extended family and friends who love and support me;

Has a beautiful, comfortable home, a car to drive, food to eat, restaurants to frequent, books to read, T.V. programs and movies to enjoy.

Has traveled to many places and have many more trips on my bucket List.

So why a new me? The old me is happily blessed, serene, peaceful and enjoys life!

There’s a song, “I Love Myself The Way I Am”, by Jai Michael Josephs that concludes with this verse:

“I love myself the way I am and still I want to grow. But change outside can only come when deep inside I know I’m beauti-ful and capable, of being the best me I can, And I love myself just the way I am.”

The old me does love myself the way I am, but the old me still wants to grow, to be a better me. My desire is to establish a greater consciousness of and connection to the God of my being. I want to live and love from my Divinity, walk my talk in a greater way, forgive easily and quickly, look at my shadow side and find the gifts in all my experiences. I want to honor my body temple by eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. I desire to change how I look at some things in this world and judge less. I want to deepen all my spiritual practices including prayer and meditation and staying present to the moment. Oh, and balance, yes, balance, some work, some play in equal amounts.

So while the old me is valued and honored, the new me is ready for a New Year!

Happy 2015!

Reverend Billie

Let’s Make ♫usic By Rev. James Crowley

I can’t believe how fast 2014 zoomed by! I seem to remember last January like it was just a few weeks ago. But, then I think about the details and I remember all the wonderful things that happened over the past year.

I remember the classes I attended and all the people I had the privilege of getting to know. I remember the pride I felt at my graduation and ordination at Lola Mays Seminary, in Mesa, and all of my family and friends who were there to support me.

There were some challenges last year, as well… some of them pretty substantial, like a very close family friend, someone who is like a sister to my mom, being diagnosed with a terminal illness.

In addition to the big events, both great and not so great, there were those moments during which I was simply able to be present and grateful. Moments like working on a walking stick, while the cool breezes blew through my back yard; reading a good book at night before I went to sleep; watching the much-needed raindrops hit the ground with a soft splash.

In fact, these little moments make up the majority of our lives, yet these are the moments we often ignore without so much as a passing thought. I’m just as guilty of it as anyone else. However, my intention, in 2015, is to take these little moments, not for granted, but for what they truly are… beautiful gifts from God.

I am grateful! Thank you, God!

Side By Side By Vard Miller First we want to count our blessings from 2014 and be grateful for the joyous Holiday Season of love shared with family and friends, and turn now to planning for a prosperous and productive New Year. And perhaps, to make this New Year truly exciting we may have to step out of our “comfort zones” (WOW)… just a little.

The familiar and routine is safe, but may be a little boring and unsatisfactory. Now I am not talking about a huge jump into the unknown asking for reckless behavior such as running with the bulls at Pamplona or swimming with the sharks. No not reckless just new-different-something to warm your blood and give new meaning to your life.

There are several ways to achieve this change… such as pursuing a new interest or learning to play an instrument. Writing your family history-rekindles an old friendship with a phone call (no email or texting) or written note—i.e. take pen to paper really… or that trip you have always promised yourself. A New Year’s resolution you can keep.

It’s all about attitude. The past is old news and the future is waiting to happen—make it happen.

Do not allow yourself to live in the land of regret.

Board Service Continued

December found the Men of Unity busy in our community. On December 14th several of the men volunteered at the Benevilla Christmas Celebration for their Grandparents and Grandchildren program. It is a special program that focus’ help for grandparents who have found themselves raising their grandchildren. Since many of them are not as capable of dealing with raising children as they were when they were younger they find they are in need of assistance. Because the Men of Unity volunteered their time and talents Benevilla was able to invite an addi-tional 5 families to their celebration. Thank you men who were able to assist.

The Men of Unity were also responsible for obtaining the luminaries, filling the bags with sand, placing them along RH Johnson Blvd. on Christmas Eve and lighting them to show their light to all who pass by. Thank you men who made this possible.

Our January 28th social breakfast/brunch will be at Birt’s Bistro at 16752 N Greasewood St. in Surprise. February 25th will find us revisiting Coco’s in Sun City Grand. See you all there at 10:45 a.m.

Unity of Surprise Prayer for 2015

Use Us

Use us, oh, God, we stand for you;

And here we’ll abide as you show us all that we

must do.

Command our hands, what must they do?

Command our lives, that are here for you.

God is the love that heals all creation,

God is Creator makes all things new, and

God needs us to shine our lights as individuals so,

Use us, oh God, we stand for you;

And here we’ll abide as you show us all that we

must do…

Affirmations I discover passion.

I discover love.

Life unfolds like a beautiful flower.

Love one another.

God is love.

I am worthy.

I am present.

I love myself the way I am.

I love you the way you are.

I love the world the way it is.

I joined Unity of Surprise and became a prayer chaplain about a year ago. Back when I lived in Northern CA I spent time as a Stephens Minister, which is like being a lay counselor. I loved sitting with people listening to

them and praying with them. I’ve been on a deep spiritual path since my divorce in 1996. The struggle, the chaos and confusion have cleared away and I’ve had time to get to know my true self. Only by learning to love myself am I able to truly love others.

Many years ago in the midst of that difficult relationship my heart closed. A pastor had prayed with me and quoted the scripture, “God will take their hearts of stone and turn them into hearts of flesh.” My constant prayer through the years has been, God, open my heart so I may receive your love. Remove the defenses and barriers that keep me closed off. The song used in our dedication ceremony had those same words, “a heart of stone becomes a heart of love alone.” I knew I had listened and followed God’s will for me and the path was now open for me to extend God’s love from my true heart. God continually blesses us with healing and guidance as we draw closer to him. That’s what happened in my life.

Blessings. I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We had some wonderful programs in December. Beginning with “So This is Christmas”, the Christmas music program. Followed by the Christmas Candle Lighting Service on December 24, 2014, next the Old Fashion Christmas Morning on December 25, 2014 and last but not least, The Burning Bowl Service and New Year’s Eve Party. A big thank you for everyone who attended, and volunteered to help where needed.

The New Year is here! There are wonderful oppor-tunities for volunteers. Our Hospitality Team needs four to six people for set-up before service and for clean up after fellowship. Feel free to give me your name and contact information after service or during fellowship time.

The Clean up crew is looking for people who are interested in helping to keep our sanctuary and restrooms clean. If this is something you would like to volunteer for, let me know.

If we have nurses or social workers in the congre-gation, I am requesting your contact information. Once I have gathered enough people, I would like to have an informal meeting to discuss possi-ble programs to present to Reverend Billie for our congregation.

If you have ideas about something you would like to initiate or a gift you would like to share, discuss it with me after service or during the fellowship time. You can also contact me via email; [email protected]. I look forward to talking with you.

Happy New Year 2015. We will start the New Year off right with several book signings from our home grown authors. The first one will be “Unspeakable Joy” by Connie Reemtsma. Connie’s book is an autobiography about her pathway through life. Connie will be visiting us next month as our guest speaker on February 19 through the Spiritual Education Program. You can read more about her talk on page 17.

Nancy Minister has restocked her meditation tapes: “Chakra Meditation for Healing and Balancing” and “Meditations for Spiritual Connection”. Nancy is trained in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy. Spirituality and meditation practice have been the foundation of her personal healing and recovery work.

Last year was a banner year for our book sales. We will be stocking new books to coordinate with Reverend Billie’s class schedule. As always, we welcome items to sell on consignment. Our collection of seasonal cards, decorator items, art, and hand crafted jewelry is growing.

Be sure to pick up your order forms for the hearts you see on our celebration wall, near the garden, and chair plaques in the Sanctuary. You can use your credit card for any and all purchases along with your personal tithe to Unity of Surprise.

Did you know we were open weekdays in addition to Sunday mornings? Stop in Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm or on Sundays before and after services.

Prosperity is Ours. Thank you for your support.

A Course in Miracles (ACIM)

Facilitator—Jo Sybenga Friday’s from 1:30 to 3:00 pm Beginning January 9, 2015 Serenity Room A Course in Miracles (ACIM) will resume on Jan. 9 with a new facilitator and a new version called the Urtext. This is the original, unedited text which is

approximately 25% more extensive than the more familiar blue book edition. The Urtext can be down-loaded on the Internet for free; it has 610 pages and contains much psychology and personal information that is not available in

other editions.

In simplest terms, the text tells us that every person in every situation is either coming from love or calling for our love, and the “Miracle” is simply that which happens to us inwardly when we change our perception.

Jo has been a student of ACIM since 1978. She holds a BA in psychology and an MS in counseling education and is a retired counselor, teacher, and social worker. She worked with Alzheimer’s patients and their families for 25 years, and later with native Japanese and native Hawaiians.

The study group is open ended and interactive.

Mindfulness, Meditation & the Brain By Nancy Minister

Unity of Surprise ♥ The Church of Practical Christianity ♥ Where Good Happens Page 10

Saturday, January 10th 9:30 am to noon Facilitated by Nancy Minister We all know that meditation works. We experi-ence it. When we take the time to sit and breathe and get centered, we feel calmer, more relaxed, even healthier. The benefits of these types of practices are well documented.

I’ll let you in on two things about me. One, is that as a child (actually it still applies) I like to under-stand why. I hated “because I said so” (even thought I said it to my own children having vowed I wouldn’t). It helps me to be more cooperative when I understand why I’m asked to do some-thing in a particular way. I don’t like to just take things “just because”. The other thing about me, is that I love experiential process. I love to feel and experience rather than just listen and think. I also enjoy meaningful interactions. All of these concepts are combined in this workshop.

I am not a scientist, but I will share the basics of why I have been so excited to learn about how our brain and nervous system function especially related to stress, and why meditation, mindfulness, EFT tapping, Reiki, Yoga, tai chi, acupressure, etc., work.

Mainly, we will learn to do tapping, do some mindfulness exercises and meditate. Join me for this fun experiential workshop and reap the benefits.

Mindfulness Paying attention to something,

In a particular way, On purpose,

In the moment, Non-judgmentally.

(Kabat-Zinn, 2003)

and spiritual growth are accomplished through contact with a humble, uneducated farmer named Joao Teixeira de Faria. Known affection-ately throughout the world as John of God, Medi-um Joao’s fame began 68 years ago when, as a youth of 14 years, he is credited with having facili-tated the healing of a room full of people while in a deep, non-self-induced, trance-like state. First limited mostly to South America, his fame has now spread to all continents, aided by positive publicity generated by personal experience of media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and world renowned self-help author and teacher Wayne Dyer, who credits John of God for his spontaneous healing from chronic Leukemia three years ago. By the hundreds of thousands, people of all faith traditions, and of no faith, are welcomed, without compromise and without price, each year at the Casa de Dom Inacio.

Seva Instruction By PJ Fischer, R.N. Tuesday, January 20 & February 17 1:00 to 4:00 pm—PJ Fischer, R.N. Myrtle Fillmore Room Seva acupressure is an easy acupressure protocol to learn. It is a stress release technique that every-one can use. There are 15 acupressure points taught for this self-administered approach. Every-one taking the class will learn the 15 acupressure points used. These same points are part of a larger protocol in Clinical Acupressure as taught by Soul Lightening International. Seva was developed by Soul Lightening International for the purpose of taking it to the first responders in New York City after 9/11. Since then it has been taught to lay people and professional health care people all over the United States, Canada, UK and Europe.

Seva is used for stress release and relaxation using gentle finger pressure. It is taught in 2 parts. Part 1 is used as a technique to be used on oneself. Part 2 is taught to give on someone else either in a chair or lying down on a bed or a massage table. Here at Unity of Surprise I am teaching Part 1, and will teach Part 2 on request.

When used on oneself it can be done while lying on the floor or sitting upright in a chair. Some students have used it before going to bed to relax. Others have used it to music and several students use it with the Seva Stress Release CD as a guide almost as a meditation. The CD speaks for itself in presenting a very calming manner. The CD was created by Cathy Miler who was one of the teachers from Soul Lightening International who took Seva to New York City. For those so inspired to own the Cd, I have them to sell and have sold quite a few as a result of attending the class.

PJ is a Certified Clinical Acupressure Practitioner who received training through Soul Lightening International and a trained teacher for Seva. Students from Unity have enjoyed the class and her hope is that you might enjoy the experience too.

Remember to sign up at the information table as there will be handouts at class.

This yearly event is offered as a way for current Board and Wisdom Council mem-bers, prospective Board Members, staff, prayer chaplains, team leaders and every-one interested in a deeper experience of Unity to come together to learn and to grow.

Mary Dunn says this about the Workshop this year:

“Each one of us at birth is given gifts for us to develop and exercise. Gifts are not talents or skills that can be learned. They are supernatural abilities given by God to enhance the whole.

Gifts are about serving others and building up the spiritual community (the body of Christ). Your spiritual gifts are the way you serve your neighbors, your ministry and at the same time honor God.

Discovering what our spiritual gifts are is a way of transforming ourselves into the balanced creations God intended us to be.”

Discover your spiritual gifts. Join us on Saturday, Jan. 24, 10:00 am—4:00 pm. Please bring a brown bag lunch, beverages and snacks will be provided.

Have you ever wanted to make a happy noise and have other people join in on the fun? Join us as we explore a Drumming Circle experience together. Here’s an opportunity to make a joyful noise and join in harmony with fellow drummers, or flute players, or those other playful sisters who enjoy shaking a rattle or rain stick. Bring a drum or any other instrument, plus whatever “Toys of Sound” like rattles and shakers to share with others. Guests are very welcome.

Friday, January 30th 10:00 AM—Noon (Charles Fillmore Room) 2015 is going to be another great year for PURLS OF WISDOM CRAFTER’S if it’s anything like the previous year. We donated many hats and lap blankets to the Salvation Army and Hospice of the Valley. I also learned of a new program set up by the Surprise Police Department and spoke with their Victim Advocate. They would love to receive the items we are making for the battered and abused victims and also the homeless. We don’t like to think of these things going on in our own community, however, with unemployment still very high, it is a reality. This is a great opportunity for Unity of Surprise to reach out into the community. We will continue to send our handmade gifts of love to these programs and would be happy to receive any yarn donations to keep our fingers moving. May 2015 be a very prosperous year to you all.

‘Soup’er Bowl Sunday Sunday, February 1, 2015 Yes, we celebrate Super Bowl Sunday in a unique way…. by bringing cans of soup for the Valley View Community Food Bank. We score points for our home team, Unity of Surprise, by helping others.

Bring your cans of soup or any other non-perishable items to the Sunday Worship Service.

February's birth flower is the violet, which signifies watchfulness, loyalty, and faithfulness. Give a violet to someone to let them know you'll always be there for them. The other February flower is the primrose, which lets someone know you can't live without them.

Did You Know? Did you know that there are two bookcases in the Lobby with used books on the shelves of both, one spiritual, one secular?

The sign says that they are for sale and if you’d like to purchase them, you can. If you’d like to read them and return, you can do that too. And you can add to the bounty by donating your books for others to enjoy. Book lovers never go to bed alone.

Happy Reading!

January's birth flower, the carnation, comes in several different colors to convey different mean-ings, much like roses. A pink carnation means affection, while a red carnation means 'I love you.' White carnations mean pure love, striped carna-tions means regret that a love is not shared, and yellow means rejection or disappointment. The other January flower is the snowdrop, which used to be considered bad luck due to the fact that it would always seem to appear to grow in grave-yards. Nowadays, it signifies hope and beauty.

Dynamic Spiritual Education Co-Chairs: Rev. Dr. Carol Beyer & Marilyn Watkins Thursday, February 19, 2015 1:30—3:30 pm Myrtle Fillmore Room Connie Reemtsma, our guest speaker is an Indonesian woman of Chinese descent. She has a wonderful story to tell about her pathway through life. As a physically challenged orphan she thought that by lightening the lives of orphans in Indonesia her thirst for acceptance would go away. Guess what she encountered and did.

You will find out by participating in the discussions that follow the talk. The process she used is not a cure that happens once and for all, but it is a lifelong process that continuously enlarges and deepens.

Since 1997 she has lived in Sun City West with her husband Tom Reemtsma. Her book, Unspeakable Joy, is available at the bookstore for $14.00.

Half of the sale price will be donated to Unity of Surprise.

Annual Meeting

Sunday, February 22nd at 11:15 am

Please join your Unity family after the 10:00 am Worship Celebration for our Annual Business Meeting.

We’ll forgo our Hospitality time and get right to the business at hand, an update on our financial situation, the election of Board Members a review of the budget for 2015, ministry team reports and other general church business.

The support and commitment of our members, spiritually, physically, emotionally and financially is paramount to our success and ability to thrive as a spiritual community. The Annual business Meeting gives us, as members, the opportunity to have a “say” in what we’re about and in our hopes and dreams for our future. It gives us a chance to celebrate all the good we’ve experienced this past year and to look forward with anticipation to this next great year.

Everyone is welcome, members and non-members, however, only members may vote. Please also note: per our bylaws, members must vote either in person or by absentee ballot to retain membership at Unity of Surprise.

Remember, You put the U in Unity!
