Unity of Surprise ♥ The Church of Practical Christianity ♥ Where Good Happens Page 2

Blessings & Bits By Reverend Billie Martini What a pleasure it was for me to dedicate our 12 Powers Wall of Art on our 13th birthday celebration on Sunday, June 7th.

The beautiful metal art was gifted to me by many of you on my birthday in March and I gifted the art by Jon Allen to Unity of Surprise on our church birthday.

During the ceremony, I dedicated the wall to our community of love, to the will and the work of the living Christ, to the healing powers within each of us represented by the 12 disciples of Jesus.

I asked that we set an intention that this wall be a focal point of healing for all who seek it. I asked us to see people stopping by to meditate and to be inspired by these panels and that Unity of Surprise fulfills in an even greater way it’s mission and purpose as a spiritual community that loves, serves and inspires all people as we celebrate our connectedness to God and to one another.

We dedicated and blessed our 12 Powers Wall knowing that it will support us in this connected oneness.

Happy Birthday to US!

In Gratitude,

Reverend Billie

12 Powers Wall Dedication

Zig Ziegler wrote: “F-E-A-R has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything and Run’ or ‘Face Everything and Rise.’ The choice is yours.”

So my Dearest Ones, the choice is not only ours individually, but collectively as a Spiritual Commu-nity. We can forget everything and run which means we can forget all of our Unity teachings and run right back into the darkness of fear and doubt. We can complain about the heat and humidity. We can mope around missing our winter visitors friends. We can be tempted to stay home from church and miss the inspiration of a guest speaker. Or we can instead face everything and rise. That’s what your Board of Trustees and I have decided to do. We’re facing the Truth! We are a dynamic spiritual community year round; winter, spring, summer and fall. The people who value what we have to offer here at Unity of Surprise support us in prayer and financially whether they are here physically or not. Unity of Surprise grows and thrives no matter if it’s 30° or 118° outside or if it’s humid. People attend Sunday Worship Services to hear a message of Truth no matter what Truth teacher is presenting it. The love that prevails at Unity of Surprise continues to raise people up during all the activities, all the time.

So choose with us to Face Everything and Rise. Face the truth, rise up in the consciousness of unlimited supply of good. Know without a doubt that we are “about our Father’s business.” Know that Unity of Surprise, as a dynamic Spiritual Community, lives its mission and purpose loving, serving and inspiring all people as we celebrate our connectedness with God and one another. Face the Truth of who we are, rise up, be a part of all the good God is and has for US.

Happy Summer! Love, Blessings, Reverend Billie

Side by Side By Molly Harala So guys. It’s SUMMER! Did you ‘notice’? Air conditioners are running, fans are humming and I’m still hot! This year I am determined to not complain and to Love What Is. Wait a minute. Love what is? All of what is, including this heat? Yup! All of it. It’s my self imposed spiritual assignment.

Now I have to tell you—that’s not so easy for me when it’s 112 degrees out. So I need help. I have noticed that it really, really helps when I practice appreciation. And to do that, I have to notice things. I have to be awake in The Now. Think of it as neutral observation. I have to pay attention.

So what can I appreciate about summer here in Surprise? Well, I like that there are fewer people on the roads, shorter lines at the grocery store and at Starbucks. No waiting when we go out to eat.

I notice that summer here is kind of like winter in the northwest where I grew up. I stay inside more. I clean out closets and go through that pile of papers on my desk which feels good. And I read! Oh, the joy of reading a good book. I eat watermelon and drink lemonade and try out cool summer recipes. Have you ever made gazpacho? I play my piano and flute—which I LOVE doing.

I get up a bit earlier so I can walk with my Beagle, Ruby before it gets too hot. And I notice and appreciate how lovely it is at 5 a.m. Me, 5 a.m.? Yup! Then we sit on the patio and meditate. Such a sweet way to start my day.

So, the practice of appreciation can be fun. It brings me into the Now which leads to acceptance, and gratitude and yes, Love What Is. And with that, I’m a happy camper. (Oh remember summer camp? See—now that makes me smile.)

Now I am noticing that this is getting kind of long so let me close by saying I love and appreciate being a member of your Board. And let me see—yes, I may even love summer in AZ! Think I’ll have a popsicle.

Love to you!

Let’s Make ♫usic By Reverend James Crowley

As I sit here, writing this article, with Independence Day fast approach-ing, I feel a supreme gratitude that I was born a citizen of such a magnificent country as ours.

In fact, I recently made a trip to Home Depot, where I purchased an American flag, which included the pole and all the hardware. When I got home, I quickly assembled it and attached the metal bracket to my front porch post. Once installed, Old Glory waved proudly as a breeze gently unfurled her colors. I sat outside for the better part of thirty minutes and watched our national symbol fly, as if she were saying, “I am your flag.” As a result, I was reminded of the following essay:

“I am your Flag. I was born on June 14, 1977. I am more than just cloth shaped into a design. I am the refuge of the World’s oppressed people. I am the silent sentinel of Freedom. I am the emblem of the greatest nation on earth.”

“I am the inspiration for which American Patriots gave their lives and fortunes. I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the bloody swamps of Viet Nam. I walk in silence, with each of your Honored Dead, to their final resting place beneath the silent White Crosses, row upon row.”

“I have flown through Peace and War, Strife and Prosperity, and amidst it all I have been respected. My Red Stripes… symbolize the blood spilled in defense of this glorious nation. My White Stripes… signify the burning tears shed by Americans who lost their sons and daughters.”

“My Blue Field is indicative of God’s heaven under which I fly. My Stars, clustered together, unify 50 States as one, for God and Country.

Old Glory is my nickname, and proudly I wave on high.”

“Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and your fortunes. Never let my enemies tear me down from my lofty position, lest I never return.”

“Keep alight the fires of patriotism; strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy. Worship Eternal God, and I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom for all mankind.”

Reverend James Crowley

Meditation Every Tuesday at 11:00 am Myrtle Fillmore Room

Enjoy time in the silence? Want to renew and refresh by putting the outside world on hold for one hour with like minded people?

Join us for a Tuesday faith lift as we come together in group meditation to “practice the presence”, to connect to the Divine within which promotes health and well-being, love and peace.

Three years ago I was new to Unity so the wellness call from my prayer chaplain was an added benefit to becoming a member here. However, I was a little unsure of the exact purpose of the call or my response to it. Today as a prayer

chaplain, I now understand the purpose of the call and the sacred meaning behind each one. Let me share with you what matters when we call.

First and foremost you are the reason we call. YOU matter! Prayer chaplains call once a month to let you know we care about you as part of our spiritual family. We are honored to share a special moment in your life. We offer a prayer for you to our creator. Maybe it is for gratitude or a special need or remembrance of our connection with the divine. Just for 3 or 4 minutes we create a partnership for this sacred time of remembrance.

So by letting go of earthly duties for a moment we walk with the Lord. Think of this call as a perfect time to gather strength, to heal an illness, or maybe to find hope in a difficult situation. God is always ready to hear our call. Actually this could be the perfect time for a great blessing from God. Let’s be open, patient, and at peace during these sacred moments out of time and space as together we participate fully in the true joy of communion with the divine.

Something new for Summer

Once a month through September on a Sunday afternoon, we will enjoy

Spiritual Cinema Sunday

“I AM”

Sunday, July 19, in the Sanctuary starting at 12 noon

Note: Bring a lunch to have before the film. (No food in the Sanctuary please.)

“I AM” is the story of a successful Hollywood director, Tom Shadyac, who experiences a life threatening head injury, and his ensuing journey to try and answer two very basic questions: 1. “What’s wrong with our world?” and 2. “What can we do about it?” With a film crew of four, Tom visits some of today’s great minds, searching for the funda-mental endemic problem that causes all of the other problems, while simultaneously reflecting on his own life choices of excess, greed and eventual healing. What if the solution to the world’s problems was right in front of us all along? “We started by asking what’s wrong with the world, and ended up discovering what’s right with it.”

Sunday, July 19, 2015—10:00 am Guest Speaker—Betty Bennett, LUT, MBA Two of Betty’s favorite quotes:

“Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen, not in the future but right now. Realize that nothing is too good. Allow absolutely nothing to hamper you or hold you up in any way.” ~Eileen Caddy

“All you can possibly need or desire is already yours. You need no helper to give it to you; it is yours now. Call your desires into being by imagin-ing and feeling your wish fulfilled.”

~Neville Goddard

August's birth flower is gladiolus, or 'sword lily.' Gladiolus represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. With gladiolus, the recipient's heart is being "pierced with love." The other August flower is the poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure, a white poppy is given for consolation, and a yellow poppy wishes wealth and success.

Reiki Sessions Continue Every Thursday

The Men of Unity displayed a fine representation as ushers on Mother’s Day in order to allow all the women ushers to enjoy their special day. Thank you everyone who stepped forward and participated.

What with my confusion of myself and others in the May/June newsletter as to where we should have our Brunch in May we will return to the schedule beginning in July as previously posted. So, for July 22 we will meet at 10 a.m. at Coco’s in Sun City Grand and on August 26 at 10 a.m. at Archie’s in Surprise. We will continue meeting throughout the summer as long as the attend-ance stays up like it has been.

No special activities are planned at the time of this writing for July & August for the Men of Unity.

“God created all men for a purpose. Our desire is for every man to reach and complete that purpose. We are sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, and grandfathers who have a love for Christ and a passion to become the men He wants us to be. We want to grow relationships with other Godly men so we can help each other in our walk with Christ. It is about being REAL with each other”.

Reiki is universal healing energy which passes through the hands of the practitioner to areas of the body where there is stress or pain. Reiki is a spiritual gift which Reverend Marcia Gonyea shares with others at Unity of Surprise for a love offering. Sessions usually last 40 minutes, but if you would like a 50 minute or 60 minute session, let Reverend Marcia know when you book your appointment. It is relaxing and meditative. The body heals itself when it is relaxed. Reiki relieves stress and pain and also balances the chakras (energy centers of the body).

Adrienne Bridgewater is a third generation Arizona native who plays the harp and sings at events through-out Metropolitan Phoenix and the Southwest. She

studied harp and voice at Arizona State University where she earned both Bachelors and Masters Degrees.

A professional freelance harpist for more than 30 years, Adrienne also maintains an active teaching studio and is a leader in the music community as an executive board member of the Phoenix Chapter of the American Harp Society.

Come be inspired with harp music as it complements the contemplative, thought provoking and sometimes whimsical poetry of 13th and 14th century Persian poets, Rumi and Hafez.
