The Present Perfect TensePast Perfect Tense = Events that happened before something else in the pastPast Tense = events that already happenedPresent Tense = events right nowFuture Tense = events that will happenPresent Perfect Tense = Something that happened an unspecified time ago. It is less definite than the past tense.

The Present Perfect TenseExample:I have been to Canada. (When is not important, just the fact that I’ve been)

I have never been to Canada. (Again, exactly when you did or didn’t go is unimportant).

I have grown over the years.

He has eaten seafood.

The Present Perfect TenseThe Past Perfect Tense is always indicated by the word “has” or “have” followed by a past participle.

Non Examples:I have a horse named Sandy. (no past participle)He has to go to the store. (no past participle)

Present Perfect and Passive

It is easy to use the passive with the Present Perfect Tense because the Tense is vague. You might be tempted to make it more vague by not including the subject. DO NOT DO THAT.

Example:The castle has been visited. (Passive)The tourists have visited the castle. (Active)
