Coordinating the work schedule and keeping residents informed went surprising well, with only a few reported incidents in- volving failure to shut off sprinklers and parking vehicles in a scheduled work area. This com- munity extends appreciation to the committee members and to Steve Lazaroff who worked tirelessly on this project. Our roads look great and came in under budget. As part of the road resurface project, road marking was renewed and improved. Stop markings and pedestrian walk markings are much more visible. Our residents and their children are precious to us and we need to avoid incidents and injuries. Road Resurfacing A major activity this period was road resurface sealing to extend road life. A committee headed by Eph Martin with members Walt Lee, Chris Dubois and Steve Lazaroff was responsible for obtaining bids, selecting the contractor, and overseeing and coordinating the effort. Coordinating the work schedule and keeping residents informed went surprising well, with only a few reported incidents in-volving failure to shut off sprinklers and parking vehicles in a scheduled work area. This com-munity extends appreciation to the committee members and to Steve Lazaroff who worked tirelessly on this project. Our roads look great and came in under budget. Auto Debit Your Dues Please help the HOA keep your dues low by enrolling in Auto Debit with Greystone. Auto Debit is the most conven-ient, cost-effective and secure way to pay your HOA dues. Auto Debit can be set up free of charge by filling out a short form with Greystone Management. The HOA dues will be paid automatically and on time directly from your designated account. Once established, no maintenance by the resident is required. Any changes in the amount of dues to collect will be made automatically by Greystone. The current method of paying dues with a check and coupon is expensive to process for the HOA and may not be supported in the near future. Please help us start the migration now towards Auto Debit by enrolling with Greystone. You will be saving yourself money and ensuring your payment is processed and applied correctly Paying the dues via Online Banking is generally not advised due to the complications with matching up the payment to the correct address and account. Many late payments are the result of issues with online bill payment. The property owner is responsible to ensure dues are paid on time. Coyote Sighting There have been several sightings of coyotes recently—on the golf course, crossing Curry Ford Road, and running down Greenwillow Drive near the Oriente Street pedestrian gate. What should I do if I see a coyote? You want to make sure the coyotes know they are not welcome. You can do this by making loud noises, throwing rocks, or spraying them with a garden hose. It is important coyotes retain their natural wariness of humans. If the coyo-tes do not appear fearful of humans, then Animal Services should be contacted. Do coyotes attack people? Although rare, coyotes have been known to attack humans, but normally coyotes are timid and shy away from people. Most attacks resulted in minor bites and scratches to adults attempting to intervene in an attack upon a pet. You can obtain more information from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Southwest Region, 836-648-3200 or the Wildlife Alert Hotline (toll free): 888-404-3922. Lighting (ACC Guideline IV.M. Lighting—page 9 of 13, November 2011) All exterior lighting shall be consistent with the character established in The Villages of Rio Pinar (The Preserve), and be limited to the minimum necessary for safety, identification and decoration. Any improvements to current lighting must be approved by the ACC. Holiday lighting may be installed for the holiday period only and must be removed thirty (30) days after the con-clusion of the holiday. All other exterior lighting must be approved by the ACC prior to installation.

The appearance that an occupant is present and is attentive to the condition of the property is, in itself, a potent deterrent to would-be criminals. 2. Physical security equipment is absolutely worthless unless used. 3. The component in any security system most likely to fail is the human one. So start the New Year right—maintain the appearance of your property by regularly mowing the lawn, clipping the hedges, etc; test your security equipment monthly (but be sure to alert your security company prior to doing so); and use your security equipment by turning on your alarm at night, when working out at the Club House, and any time you may be leaving your premises for however short a period.

January in the Garden Deadhead flowers to encourage new blooms Monitor the garden for insects and disease. Plant trees, shrubs and perennials and water until established. Mow lawns at recommended heights - 3-4 inches for St. Augustine and Bahia, 1.5-2 inches for Centipede, and 2.5 inches for dwarf St. Augustine While Crepe Myrtles do not require pruning, removing seed pods, crossing branches and small twiggy growth improves the appearance and form of the plant. Prune non-Spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form.

February in the Garden February is a good time to check citrus trees for scab disease. Apply a copper fungicide when new leaves appear and again when 2/3 of the flower blossoms have fallen Fertilize shrubs. Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch which will con-serve moisture and reduce weeds. Apply a pre-emergent weed killer to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Timing is impor-tant for good control.

March in the Garden If azaleas need hard pruning to shape or produce a fuller plant, do it just after plants finish blooming. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade on spring flowering trees and shrubs, but before new buds set. Fertilizer palms, azaleas, camellias and ornamental shrubs. Check sprinkler systems for efficient use of water. *University of Florida IFASA Extension
