The President’s MessageD ear Fellows/
Members,
Season's greetingsand best wishes for the New Year-2014.
Since its establishment in the year 1948,our Society has grown year after year andhas done marvelous job in disseminatingGeotechnical knowledge within India andalso across the world. Our members haverepresented IGS at international level andhave contributed to important projectsaround the world.
India has embarked on massive Energy,Irrigation and Infrastructure developmentplan to make our country IndustrialSuperpower within next few decades. Theplan includes construction of Thermal &Nuclear power plants, Highways &Expressways, Underground metros, andDams….. all requiring Geotechnicalexpertise for their successful and safeinstallations. The country also facesproblems of recurring earthquakes, landslides, floods and other naturalcalamities requiring ingenious disastermitigation techniques and solutions tominimize risk to human life and property.Further, if we look it broadly, there is asaying: Roti-Kapada & Makan i.e. Food-Clothes & Shelter; these are humans'basic needs. Therefore, as long as humanrace exists, demand for shelter andinfrastructure will remain. Thus, requirement of geotechnical expertise willbe never ending.
Let us also think Outside the Box.Currently research is going on to use

genetically engineered micro organismsto manufacture high strength materials.Smart materials and Self-repairingmaterials may see the day light soon.Metallic memory is being tried inincorporating during manufacture ofmaterials such that upon deformation, theimplanted memory will bring the materialback to its original shape. Knowledge hasno boundaries. Principles of one area ofcivil to other areas of civil, one area ofengineering to other areas of engineering,Engineering principles to Medicine andvice versa…...are being applied. So thereis going to be plenty of opportunities forall future engineers.
For success of any project, three phasesare important: 1st Design, 2ndConstruction and 3rd Instrumentation &Monitoring. We are fairly good with 1stphase, weak with 2nd phase due to pooror deliberate poor QC while the 3rd phaseis hardly given any serious consideration. Thus there is a general concern withregard to the quality of work beingproduced and this is being echoed bymost of us time and again. The qualityrelated problem is faced by otherprofessions also. We all need to stop tobe too greedy about money and startworrying about the safety and economyof our structures. This can happen fast ifwe common people change ourperception and start respecting honestyand integrity of our citizens more thantheir wealth.
Friends, when I took over as IGS Presidentin December last year, I had promised thatwe shall continue with the usual routine
activities of the Society but we shall alsomake reforms and modifications in ourprocedures wherever needed and alsotake new initiatives in IGS activities.Because of the faith you have reposed inme as your President and the support, cooperation and advice I have receivedfrom the excellent team you have givento me-the Executive Committee members;I have been able to move to great distancein fulfilling my promise during 1st year ofmy tenure. I ask you to refer to my reportincluded in 55th AGM notice for thedetails. Among new initiatives, two arelatest: (1) Young Geotechnical Engineers(YGE) are the future of IGS. To encouragethem to get involved and participate inGeotechnical research and field work, biannual Best Paper Awards especially forYGE are now instituted. The first set ofeven-year Awards totaling eight (8) willbe given during IGC-2014. I ask all YGE toparticipate and submit their papers whencalled for. (2) We are going to issue IDcards to our members starting from year-2014. Details are provided in this NewsBulletin.
The last but not the least, the magnificentIGC-2013 was organized by the RoorkeeChapter during 22-24 December, 2013. TheConference was a grand success. I amconfident that after three days ofdeliberations, the participants went homeenriched with further knowledge, havingenjoyed good hospitality and made newfriends. Congrats to all the members ofIGC-2013 organizing committee.
