The Prez Sez… Hey club, looks like I’m your new president. Lucky you!

For those of you who don’t know me, a brief background: I began running in the spring of 2001, at Rincon Valley Middle School, then had

my passion for the sport blossom as a part of the Puma dynasty at Maria Carrillo HS under the great Danny Aldridge. While my collegiate career was

not what I hoped for, I did have the honor to represent the UC Davis Aggies on the track, something that I will never forget. I’ve represented many

entities in my day: RVMS, MCHS, UC Davis, Brooks, Team USA (Maccabiah Games, Israel), Heart and Sole, and Horsecow (I saw one, once…). But through it all

I’ve been an Empire Runner.

Well, I first officially joined the club in 2005, right after I graduated high school, though I knew about the club for a good while. And the person I have to thank for that is Downtown Kenny Brown. As THE stud when I was in high school, I had the opportunity to watch him race and see the love for running he had, and also how he gave back to the community. While I didn’t then know what the future held, I knew that I’d be more than happy to follow in his footsteps, to live here in Sonoma County, work at Fleet Feet, and be the next Kenny Brown. Fortunately, I did one better as I instead am now working with Kenny (at Heart and Sole).

Well, now you know me. And I want to get to know you! As many of you are aware, we have a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Empire-Runners-Club/175376832474904 also linked on our website), one that I many of you will begin to frequent. On said page, I’ve started a little thread to get to know each other (http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=175376832474904&topic=228). I encourage you all to spend a minute giving the club your background. We have some awesome members, and this is a great way to get to know some!

Additionally, while there are some very active, vocal members in the club, that is a very small percentage of our 700+ members. But you each should have a voice. So I would love it if you could all answer the brief survey linked on the website, Facebook, email, and here (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/88SSMLN). This will give me a much better idea of where all of you want the club to go.

Beyond that, I want to be easily accessible to talk, be it via email ([email protected]) or in person by stopping by my de facto office at Heart and Sole, 65 Brookwood Ave, Santa Rosa CA 95404.

Thanks for listening, and I hope you all have a great 2011.

Run Happy,

Alex Wolf-Root

The Long and Short of It – Dale Peterson

What has Six Legs, Four Eyes and Sixteen Lives?

Answer: Frankie and Chloe our two three-legged cats. I figure they both lost at least one of their nine lives so between the two of them that makes only sixteen lives. If these are not the two most inspirational critters you could ever meet I am not sure what could top them. Frankie had what we thought was a cyst but turned out to be a tumor and so had his back left leg amputated a few years back. Chloe was probably hit by a car or possibly a bicycle and had nerve damage to her right front leg. She too had to undergo an amputation just over a year ago. When Frank came home from the animal hospital he immediately and I do mean immediately tried to run around the room. Only placing him in a cage kept him at bay long enough to heal. Chloe had a tougher go of it and took a while to learn how to get around again. But before her fur was grown out again she managed to escape outdoors, hop over our picket fence and disappear for three stressful days before coming in through the cat door past our dogs in the middle of the night. Frankie hops when he walks but he runs as smooth as ever and has no trouble climbing a six-foot fence. Chloe routinely chases one of our four-legged cats under the couch or some other piece of furniture. Whenever I get an injury I think about how incredibly resilient Frankie and Chloe are and try to have a little of their spirit.

Speaking of Motivation

Like a lot of runners of any age, but especially those on the other side of fifty I probably have seen my last PR. I do my share of whining but generally I try very hard not to be one of those runners who is always looking back and talking about the good old days, one of those runners who always compares their latest race with how they used to be and complains bitterly when they come up short. Even so, it is challenging at times to look to a future of diminishing returns. I find that for me the best way to keep negativity at by is to always have a goal. The last few years I had first Boston then New York as goals. Quite frankly it has gotten harder since I qualified for and ran in both of these events of a lifetime. When I was waiting for the start of the Clarksburg Twenty in November I thought that rather than run like there was no tomorrow I should run like there is no yesterday. Instead of being anxious about living up to some younger and faster version of myself I would run for today – like there was no yesterday. I ran a smart race using all the tricks and experience I gained over the years and did pretty well that day. Most importantly I enjoyed it and appreciated what I could do… when I could still do it. I think that is the key to happiness as an older runner.

Life after Orthotics

In my quest to run more naturally I have for the most part stopped wearing my orthotics in my everyday shoes. My feet and knees etc seem fine. I have been doing a few short runs a week without them as well. My right foot is not very happy afterwards but we shall see how it goes. I always have an ache in my right arch where I think I broke a bone quite a few years ago when I stepped funny while scrambling over some boulders. Time will tell if this ache fades. Meanwhile I am still wearing my orthotics in any run over half an hour. Stay tuned.

Coming to a Reality Near You – 2011!

That’s right. We all get a do-over starting on January 1st 2011. Starting with our very own Resolution Run. Bring your bleary-eyed broken-down body out to Montgomery HS and make the neighbors give you funny looks. Then, before you know it we will be back at Valley Ford and then on to the spring-time races like the Ilsanjo Classic. Next thing you know you will be ready to make a run at one of the Track Series All Time lists! Go for it. Mount a comeback. Defy the odds. Heck, make a last stand if you have to, but get your shoes on and make it happen!

December is often a slow month for big‐time athletics, but there was still some awesome action this month. Here I’ll be covering a bunch of cross country national championships, including club, collegiate, prep, and youth. So without further ado, the December 2010

Month That Was! By Alex Wolf‐Root  NCAA Division II National Championships  The pressure for Neely Spence had to have been huge. As the daughter of Steve Spence, a medalist from the 1991 World Championships marathon and 1992 Olympian, people have been expecting big things from the start. On the track, she’s won three national 5,000m titles. Then there was the 2nd place finish at the XC National Champs in 2008. But last year, she had arguably the worst race of her career; expected to get the win, she staggered home in 43rd.   But this year the junior from Shippensburg she got what was expected. Running in a small pack till 4k, she dropped the hammer in the final kilometer to outdistance Sarah Porter of Western Washington by 15 seconds. Finally, she had her XC national championships.

In the team standings, Shippensburg finished 4th, thanks to Spence’s low stick. But it was Grand Valley State that took top honors. With both Katherine McCarthy (4th) and Megan Maceratini (9th) in the top ten, and their fifth runner in 27th (for just 20 team points), no one could even get close to their 66 points for the win. Perennial powers Western State (95) and Adams State (98) had a strong fight for second, but neither had the depth to challenge up front.   California powerhouse Chico State placed 5th, with a score of 164. Second for the Wildcats was Shannon Rich, formerly of Rancho Cotate HS. Rich finished 37th overall.  On the men’s side, we had the same three players: Grand Valley State, Western State, and Adams State. But this time it was Adams that absolutely crushed the competition. Scoring just 57 points, only Western State at 102 had even double that. Grand Valley was all the way back at 135. Chico, despite having Isaac Chavez (5th)

and Brent Handa (7th) in the top ten, was 5th again at 181. Individually, Michael Crouch of Queens (N.C.) took a close three‐second win over Meshack Koyiaki of Columbus State.    Foot Locker National High School Championships  For those who haven’t heard yet, the big local story is club member Julie Nacouzi. A week after taking the overall win (yes, she beat all the men!) at the McGuire’s Breakfast Run, Nacouzi headed to the Foot Locker West Regional Championships, for al chance to earn a spot at the National Championships.   Well, she didn’t just earn a trip to nationals, she won the entire West Region!

At the National Championships, no one was able to hang with Aisling Cuffe from the Northeast Region, but Nacouzi steadily moved up the entire race to just get the lean for third.

On the boy’s side, defending champion Lukas Verzbicas won by over 11 seconds, despite the gap coming only in the final mile. And despite the fast the he jogged the last 100m, waved to the crowds, and walked across the line. Yes, he walked the finish. He did not run the entire way. He didn’t have to. He was that good. I cannot get over this fact. It was amazing.  For much, much more coverage of Julie and the entire Foot Locker High School National XC Champs, check out Jim Crowhurst’s Redwood Empire prep running site: northbay.com/running.   USATF Junior Olympic XC Champs  The Junior Olympic XC Champs are a way for youth 9‐18 to compete against the best of their age from across the country. While there are way too many races to highlight, I just wanted to give props to local runner Matthew Salazar of Petaluma for taking 18th in the “Midget Boys” age group (kids born in 1998‐1999). Very promising start for this new runner!   USATF National Club Cross Country Championships  While many elite runners train on their own, or in loose groups, there are some clubs that actually race as, well, clubs. And the best of those were racing at the USATF Club Nats earlier this month, with McMillan Elite coming out as the best running club in the country.  The women had a blowout, scoring 69 points to the Boulder Running Company’s 103. And it’s not just that there were some good club runners there; some of the top individuals in the country competed. Taking the individual win was Renee Metivier Baillie, while second went to the USA’s newest marathon darling Desiree Davila. Former MCHS Puma Jacqui Wentz placed 83rd, helping her East‐Coast club Riadha to a 7th place finish.   Did I say the women’s race was a blowout? Well, McMillan’s men scored an amazing 29 points, less than half of the Hanson‐Brooks’s 59 for second. Third place, the BAA, was way back at 175. McMillan took the top two individual spots in Aaron Braun and Nick Arciniaga, with all five of their runners in the top 19. The top Pacific Association clubs were the ASICS Aggies (301) and the Adidas Transports (317) in 9th and 10th. Some very, very high‐quality racing at this meet. But still a meet that Empire Runners can compete in too!   And that’s basically it. December is always a quiet running month, but things will pick up soon as world XC and track are just around the corner. Till then, do as these studs do, and get out on the trails and get muddy!  Till next time ‐Your Friendly Neighborhood Wolfman

Grand Prix Pulse We have a new Czar for 2011!  Fortunately our out‐going Czar Bob Rogers gets to retire in opulent splendor befitting his royal status and not in an unmarked grave somewhere east of the Urals.  Lucky guy.  His last report is below.  Thank you, Bob, for a job well done.  History will forever hail you, “Czar Bob, the Damn Good.”

Following Czar Bob’s parting shot, our new Czar, Gerald McCormick, introduces Himself and lays out His new rules.  Pay attention.  He’s the Czar, and not following the Czar’s edicts can lead to serious consequences.

Farewell, my loyal subjects...

We have wrapped up another year of Empire Runners Club races.  I assume many of you have tried to figure out where you stand in the GP series, but unfortunately I have not been diligent in keeping up with the scoring.  But, in the next few days the standings, including all the events, should be on the website.  Look over the events for which I have scored you, and let me know if I have missed anything.  For those of you who have scored in more than 11 events, remember, the final totals for awards will be based on your top‐scoring 11 events.  In a couple of weeks I will complete the final scoring and announce overall and age group award winners which will be presented at the annual club party.

With 2011 comes a new Grand Prix director and likely some changes to the rules.  Thanks to all who participated in 2010 and thanks for your patience in the often late postings of the point updates.  I hope in 2011 you enjoy running more than ever and attain goals you set for yourself.

Happy trails,

Empire Runners / Fleet Feet Grand Prix 2011   Hello all.  I hope 2011 finds everybody healthy and running strong.  It is a new year, which means the Empire Runners are kicking off the Grand Prix for 2011! Like always, I expect there to be a fierce competition in both the overall and the age group standings.  But we’ve made some tweaks to the rules to encourage even more participation in the Grand Prix:

• There is no minimum number of races.  If you race only once or twice, but end up with the most points in your age group, you win!

• Only your 8 best races will count toward your total points.  We hope this will include more participation in the Grand Prix.  In the past, a runner needed to stay healthy all year long to have a chance at the overall title.  Now, if you miss a stretch with an injury or other commitments, you can still be competitive in the standings.

• Once again, Kenwood is only volunteer points. But this year it has been dropped to 75 volunteer points, just like all other races.

• We are still working on the prizes for this year’s winners.  Prizes will be announced in the February newsletter.

A complete list of rules is posted on the Empire Runners website.

Good Luck and Happy Racing!

The Doc Is In By Alec Isabeau, D.C. Reprinted from March 2001 Newsletter Body Language WHY DO RUNNERS GET INJURED SO OFTEN? Part II

You may recall from last month’s newsletter (which I’m sure is now stored away in your safe deposit box) that runners seem to get injured frequently due to three major factors:

1. Running has narrow tolerances for biomechanical distortions and imbalances in our joints, muscles and connective tissues.

2. Running can be easily sabotaged by numerous external factors, such as how we work, sit, drive and sleep, as well as what shoes we wear, the surfaces we run on, etc.

3. Runners are notorious for over-training.

So, armed with this wisdom, how can we minimize our chances of becoming lame, limping, grumbling non-runners?

First off, take very good care of your running machinery. In particular, aim to reduce your unique pattern of distortions and imbalances via a patient, diligent program of stretching and strengthening. Running, of course, is incredibly effective at enhancing aerobic endurance, but it’s next to worthless at improving general flexibility and head-to-toe strength. While stretching and strengthening may feel like unpleasant chores to someone who just wants to romp in the woods, these two other components of fitness are often critically important in managing running injuries and -- bonus! -- they can also enhance race performance. So, consider starting a routine of post-run or evening stretches, as well as plugging in a couple sessions of strength training per week, which can include free weights, machines, swimming, yoga, pull ups, push ups, crunches, etc.

Secondly, recognize that even the most devoted, high mileage runner spends only about 5% of the week actually running. The remaining 95% of the time is spent sitting, working, driving, sleeping, letting the cat in and out of the house, etc., and it is what we do during these other hours that often creates trouble that emerges only when we run. Perhaps the most common example of this phenomenon is the achy, aggravating stiffness and pain which develop around the hips in a runner, resulting in a shorter, less fluid gait and slower race times. The usual culprit? Sitting. Sitting, sitting, sitting for hundreds of hours, at a computer, in a car, in front of the TV. The solution: sit less, if possible, but most importantly, counteract the compression and restriction induced by the sitting by ... you guessed it, stretching.

Other factors which may insidiously wreak havoc upon a runner include the shoes we wear at work and while running, ergonomic and postural distortions, muscle tension induced by emotional distress, and congenital imbalances in our skeletons (e.g., leg length discrepancies, spinal curvatures, over-pronation of the feet).

Page 11: The Prez Sez… · The Prez Sez… Hey club, looks like I’m your new president. Lucky you! For those of you who don’t know me, a brief background: I began running in the spring

The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]

Finally, to paraphrase Pogo, we have met the runner’s worst enemy and he or she is us. Diplomatically, we competitive runners could describe ourselves as enthusiastic, self-disciplined, highly motivated and goal oriented. Stated more bluntly, we all exhibit varying degrees of obsessive-compulsive behavior. We all know runners (look in the mirror, perhaps?) who are chronically injured because they are chained to some arbitrary weekly mileage goal, they run workouts and races loaded up on Advil and they simply refuse to embrace the concepts of rest, recovery, cross-training and the limitations of mammalian physiology. Remembering that too much of a good thing ain’t no good at all, balance your love of running with adequate recovery and replace that old notion of high volume training with lower volume, higher quality workouts and essential rest. Don’t be a slave to your logbook.

Wow, that’s all pretty heavy stuff. Are we really that wayward and whacked? Should you just forget this running nonsense and join the bingo club? Indeed you should!... on your 95th birthday. Until then, with a little luck, you can continue joyfully running and racing, by staying healthy, taking good care of your parts and by training wisely. See you on the trails. ‐‐Alec Isabeau, D.C.  Jan 2011 Addendum to Part Two: By and large, the ideas on injury prevention in the 2001 article remain valid, but there are, as expected, some revisions to consider. We place less emphasis now on traditional static stretching as an injury prevention tool; now, we push functional strength training and core stabilization exercises. While stretching remains vital, it’s no longer considered the cure-all we thought it was years ago and there’s some dispute as to how we should actually perform stretching. We also now supplement stretching with self-massage maneuvers using foam rollers and massage sticks. The biggest change in strength training has been the discarding of machine-based exercises and the return to “primitive” full body training with free weights and body-weight exercises (e.g., push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, deadlifts, kettlebell training, etc.). There’s some concern, in fact, that machine-based strength training may actually be detrimental to athletic performance, as it might distort fundamental movement patterns which are crucial for natural, multi-planar athletic activities. Currently, as anyone who has hobbled into my office can attest, injury prevention and rehab focuses on developing and maintaining a reliable foundation of symmetric, quality movement patterns. On top of this foundation, we then start adding quantity, load, complexity and sport-specific skills. We now make a big deal of hip stability, lower limb alignment and the development of a fluid, light, primitive running pattern. And we still rail against prolonged sitting and compulsive running, which will never do us any good.

The Last 10K of 2010  By John Anderson, race director  This year was the 35th running of the Last 10K.  We have all sorts of weather during that period. It has ranged from a frigid 17 degrees to beautiful 60 degree weather.  The runners have come despite the conditions.  2010’s race continued that trend.  Jerry Lyman moved the race into the 21st century with online registration.  201 people had entered prior to race day.  With heavy rain forecast for race time we wondered how many runners would show up.  The rain was late and most of the field was on time.  Only fifty or so were no‐shows.  Their absence was more than made up by 60 race day entries.  All told 237 brave souls competed in the two races.

Bob Shor and Jerry Lyman started the morning at 6:30 am.  With the cloud cover and early start, they were working with the light from their cars.  In short order, the finish chute and registration areas were set up.  It was then time for Dale Peterson and Alec Isabeau to mark the course.  Headlamps were used to mark their way.  Before they were finished, Leslie Curry arrived to take charge of registration. These people are great club members whose hard work makes many races successful.  The 10K race started promptly at 9 am followed four minutes later by the two mile.  Rancho Cotate athletes acted as course monitors and traffic control on Channel Drive.  With Larry Meredith and Doug Courtemarche timing, Luis Luna led a trio of Piner runners to the top spots.  On the women’s side, 12‐year‐old Delaney White was the first place finisher.  Former area high school runners dominated the 10 K races.  Reesey Byers, who runs for Sac State turned in an excellent time.  Shannon Rich, a Chico State athlete, had a comfortable win on the women’s side.

Southeast Greenway Campaign Update

By Tanya Narath

Each year, students from UC Berkeley Professor Michael Southworth’s graduate Urban Design Studio work on a real life planning project during their semester long course. For the fall 2010 semester, Professor Southworth chose Santa Rosa’s Southeast Greenway Campaign as the project the students would adopt as their focus of study.

The Southeast Greenway Campaign is a community-based project to develop a vital urban greenway on the approximately 2-mile long property that stretches from Farmer’s Lane to Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, CA. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to link Spring Lake and Annadel Park with downtown Santa Rosa and West Sonoma County, creating a much-needed east-west connection for alternative transportation, open space and recreation.

The campaign has a broad vision for the property and is reaching out to everyone in the community to build on the vision. The campaign envisions a greenway that will:

Improve the quality of life for Santa Rosa residents Promote sustainable and healthy lifestyles by encouraging walking and biking Include open space, urban forest, restored creeks, land for aquifer recharge, urban gardens,

and preservation of historic orchards and natural habitat Connect Spring Lake Park with the Prince Memorial Greenway, downtown Santa Rosa, the

SMART train and other alternative transportation, and enhance connectivity to the West County and beyond

Build community spirit and address neighborhood needs.

The goals of the campaign are to

Sponsor a community-based planning process (a design charrette) to develop a vision and plan that offers a host of community benefits.

Work with stakeholders to implement the plan and coordinate purchase, zoning, development and maintenance of the property.

A community design charrette is a multiple-day, collaborative design workshop that harnesses the talents and ideas of neighbors, community stakeholders and technical advisors to create a design and plan that represents community vision.

A design charrette is valuable because it will provide the opportunity for a diverse group of community stakeholders to convene and articulate a vision and plan for the future of this significant parcel of land. A charrette brings people with diverse interests, backgrounds and points of view together in a process that alternates between public meetings and technical work sessions. It involves education, dialogue, feedback, and a decision making process that encourages the best ideas to surface. The outcome is a shared vision and plan that will be ready to present to the Santa Rosa City Council and County Board of Supervisors so that it can be incorporated into the General Plan.

On Saturday, December 11, the students from the UC Berkeley Urban Design studio presented their final projects to an enthusiastic audience at the Glaser Center in downtown Santa Rosa. Several Empire Runners club members attended the event to hear the presentations and learn more about the campaign.

The students conducted an assessment of the property and prepared an analysis of current site conditions. Using this information as their foundation, the students then developed a series of creative plans for the greenway, each capturing their unique vision and offering them an opportunity to exercise their skills.

The ideas and concepts presented by the students will be used as input to the community-based visioning and planning efforts that will occur with the design charrette some time in 2011.

The vision of the SE Greenway as a vital urban greenway presents some exciting possibilities for new running routes in Santa Rosa. Imagine being able to run from Spring Lake all the way to downtown Santa Rosa on a series of connected, protected paths. This is one of many ideas that will be explored further in 2011.

Notes From Another SOB Well, a week after our Kenwood footrace my wife and I did our new annual trek to Mt Ashland, home of the SOB Trail races (15k and 50k). It has become my favorite race of the year, with apologies to the Ilsanjo and Loop races. It was hot all week and temps were in the 90’s in Ashland, not boding well for enjoyment, also at the higher points of both courses, they were faced with 6 feet of snow still on the ground the previous week, and were debating having to alter the 50k route. We arrived in Weed Friday night and met my niece, Sarah, from Placerville who was the only one I could convince to run the race this year. Weed is an interesting little town to stop over in, with many historic spots, a walkable downtown and rivers and mountains all around. Check it out.

We drove up the 30 miles to the start early Saturday, no race day reg since it is limited to 225 in each event, picked up our numbers and enjoyed a mostly windless, chilly mountain morning. Did I mention the races start (and end) at 6500 feet and meander along the mostly single track Pacific Crest Trail with views of Mt Mclaughlin, Shasta, and the Cascade and Siskiyou ranges. Sarah and I and my wife Jeanne, who does not race, wished each other luck and started off with the others. Both courses head off downhill, which means they finish uphill, a sobering thought, and peel off of the dirt road onto single track and awesome views, if you are daring enough to glimpse up from the side-hill trail and sneak a peek or two. The trails are mostly soft meadow trails, with a few wet spots but pretty narrow, which limits passing, but most are content to keep a sane pace at the earlier stages, hopefully leaving something in the tank for the rising temps at the end.

The first half is pretty much rolling to flat with one section of steep, but short, switchbacks leading to the not quite halfway turnaround. At that point you head up a long, hot, uphill on a dirt road, passing a few 4ft snow banks. This is a tough section that seems to climb forever, especially since you can see the road stretching off into the distance (and I couldn’t remember from last year if we stayed on the road the whole climb or not. We did stay on it for over a mile up and then a tough downhill for another mile or so (there are no mile markers on the course-which is a good thing cause you wouldn’t want to know your splits anyway). Anyway we finally hit the first and last aid station again and got back on the single track till we hit the final uphill grind to the finish. This stretch was baking by the time I got there, but I struggled through and was glad to have a level finish to muster up a little speed, and dignity, for the crowd. All in all this is a beautiful course, very well run, lots of camaraderie (typical with these mountain trail runs). It is tough and long and at altitude but a great challenge. I recommend it to all.

I ran 7 minutes slower than last year and had a little bout of altitude issues after finishing. Sarah finished a few minutes behind me, surprising all of us with a good first race here. My wife and I traveled on to Bend, Oregon for a mini vacation, which is a great outdoor area for running, biking, climbing and kayaking. I’ll be back to the SOB (Siskiyou Outback) next year. Sarah said next time she is choosing the race (and it won’t be at 6500 feet).

4. Kathy Van Riper Award. Val Sell reported that there are 2 nominations for the Kathy Van Riper award. Winner(s) will be announced at the club party on 2/05/11.

5. Council on Aging. Shirley fee presented the proposal: “I propose that the Empire Runners Club become a sponsor for the Senior Games

scheduled to take place in Santa Rosa in June 1 through 5th. The Council on Aging is the organization that will be heading the event.

There will be a 5k, 10k and half marathon. Empire Runners will be responsible for all aspects of the road racing portion of the Senior Games.

We have the expertise to put on successful races. The benefit to the club will be more recognition in the community, more member involvement, and establishment of contacts within the community that may help with our sponsorship program, bringing more money to the club giving us the ability to help more young athletes.”

Dena Lash of Council on Aging gave some background on the Senior Games. The 2011 Santa Rosa games are proposed for June 1-5. Competitions in swimming, tennis, basketball, bocce, soccer, and cycling are scheduled, and Empire Runners is being asked to organize the road racing portion of the event. A member brought up the fact that most of our member volunteers work weekdays, so the running events would need to be June 4 or 5, and all running events should be on the same day. It was noted that several other June events should be taken into consideration, including Fitch Mountain footrace, Riverfront Relay, Dipsea and Tahoe Relay. Discussions included road race routes, feeding runners, chip timing, aid stations, insurance, and the club’s financial liability. It was agreed that if the club decides to participate in this event, time is of the essence, as registration should begin in the end of February. Shirley agreed to send a detailed proposal to Board members and other interested parties in the next few days.

6. Meeting Time change. President Koch made a proposal to make all monthly meetings at 7:30pm, instead of the earlier time of 6:30pm during the shorter days of standard time. Agreed by voice vote. To be reflected on the web and training calendars.

7. Luis Luna letter. Piner High School runner sent a note thanking members for their individual donations supporting his attending the Footlocker Cross Country Championships.
