CELL PHONE Policy
Cell phones are a valuable part of today’s
society. They have allowed us to stay connected
with family and friends in ways that we could have
never imagined. They are, however, a distraction in
the classroom that can often interfere with student
learning.
To minimize classroom distractions, each class
period students will be required to place cell
phones in a designated spot held secure by the
teacher.
As always, students will be free to use their cell
phones during lunch and at break.
ATTENDANCE is Important!!!
We understand that there are occasions when students must miss school.
Please follow the school’s attendance policy stated below.
***Each student has 3 days following an absence to turn in an excuse to the main office and make up his/her work.
***Students may turn in 3 parent excuses for absences each semester.
We will do the following to help your child have good attendance.
***You will receive a call each day your child is absent.
***Following the 3rd unexcused absence, you will receive a letter requesting a parent
meeting regarding your child’s attendance.
***Following the 4th unexcused absence, the Youth Service Center will contact you
regarding your child’s attendance.
***Following the 6th unexcused absence, the Director of Pupil Personnel will contact you.
Program Review News
All Kentucky high schools are implementing Program Reviews in the areas of Arts/Humanities, Practical Liv-
ing/Career Studies, Writing, and World Language (new for the 15/16 school year). Each program review con-
tains the following areas:
Curriculum and Instruction – the ways in which the content, materials, and learning processes provided for
your child are of consistently high quality
Formative and Summative Assessment – the ways in which teachers in the program use ongoing and formal
assessment to understand and respond to the needs of individual students
Professional Development and Support Services – the ways in which the school provides teachers with the
professional learning experiences and support they need to provide high quality instruction for your child
Administrative/Leadership Support and Monitoring – the ways in which the school leadership supports ef-
fective program implementation and provides for the ongoing needs of students and teachers
The goal of Program Reviews is to continually improve teaching and learning throughout the school in all
program areas. Schools are held accountable for these programs annually in their overall school score when
reporting state assessment results.

Agriculture Students make
Common Core Connections The common core standards expect that students
will incorporate literacy skills across the curriculum.
This year, agriculture students practiced speech writ-
ing and delivery based on a topic of interest. Connect-
ing with all of the common core literacy components,
students had to read, write, listen and speak in order
to complete the task.
Students Participate in Mock Trial
Writing standards require that students defend a position
through argumentative writing. English students participat-
ed in a mock trial where they reviewed evidence (witness
testimonies, background reports, bank statements, etc.) for
a fictional character. After reviewing evidence, students
chose a position and wrote a defense in the form of an
argumentative essay.
Continue to look for Program Review
updates throughout this new school
year. These updates will be posted using
various forms of media.

HOBY
The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Program allows high school sophomores to recognize their
leadership talents and apply them in becoming ethical leaders in their home, school, and community. Students
attend three– or four-day seminars and participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state,
and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning to make a positive impact in their community.
Interested sophomores can apply in October. See counselors for details.
Governor’s Scholars Program
The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer
residential program for outstanding students who
have completed their junior year of high school. The
program’s mission is to enhance Kentucky’s next
generation of civic and economic leaders. The appli-
cation will be available in late September. For more
information and to access the application, visit:
www.gsp.ky.gov
Rogers Scholars Program The Rogers Scholars Program is an intensive, weeklong
program focusing on developing skills in leadership, technolo-
gy, entrepreneurship, and community service. Students apply
during their sophomore year in high school and those selected
attend the program the summer before their junior year. For
more information, access to the application, and a list of colleg-
es that offer scholarships to participants visit:

Robinson Scholars Program
The Robinson Scholarship is a full, four-year scholarship to the University of Kentucky. In order to be con-
sidered for the Robinson Scholarship, students must first apply for acceptance into the Robinson Leadership
Pool. Each year, the Leadership Pool admits at least three current high school freshmen from each eligible
county. To be considered, students must be a first generation college bound student (parents can not hold a
four year college degree). Applicants will be selected based on academic achievement, participation in commu-
nity service, extracurricular activities, personal enrichment, and need for financial aid. Students must apply
online at www.uky.edu/RobinsonScholars/apply.htm. The online application is accessible October—January.
