August 28th Benefice Service at Rangeworthy Holy Trinity Holidays

August is the time when those with

children have a

chance to get away all together, but of course it also means additional childcare responsibilities if both parents are working. It may of course just mean a change from your normal routine. Holidays are a derivation of Holy-days such as Easter and Christmas when a feast or fiesta would be part of the village community involving everyone in the village. They represented a chance for a break from work and to give thanks and celebrate. In our multi-cultural society there are differing holy days and holy periods, often coming at different times, like Eid at the end of Ramadan, Good Friday just before Easter. The Jews have Yom Kippur and the Sikhs have Diwali. There are also pagan festivals such as the Summer Solstice. Every week Friday is a holy day for Islam and Sunday for Christians. One idea to fit into a corner of our holiday is to reflect on what is holy in our lives This could mean what is set

apart in my life for me, the family or for an other? What is it that represents the essence of what I believe and makes sense to tie the different parts of my life together? What is most important to me, or what do I have to do? These sort of questions often get lost in the hurly burly of life in its normal routine, but help us to see if we are really doing what we want to do and integrates us to give us peace. The Bible talks about a peace that passes understanding – something that is intuitive and right for the unique way we are made. The greeting ‘shalom’ is a Hebrew word often just interpreted as peace, but meaning far more. It has a sense of being at harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquillity with ourselves and at peace with others so that we experience a unity of mind spirit and body. I hope that whenever and wherever you take your holiday this year you will find time to find your holy place. Shalom. Peter

HOLD THE DATE! The annual

GREAT HILLESLEY BIKE RIDE will take place on Sunday 11th September. The start place will be at the War Memorial. There will be a main route, of about 30 miles, and one or two shorter routes. There will be some pubs en route for some necessary refreshment! Details are still being planned, but hopefully the weather will be great and you can book this date. Please let me know if you are interested in coming along, so I can provide a map – the cost would be £2 per map, covering printing and building up a charity fund. Malcolm Woodrow

David and Jane would like to thank their friends and neighbours for their kindness, thoughts, flowers, cards, emails and donations to the Winnicott Foundation since hearing about the premature birth, and death 10 days later, of their granddaughter, Matilda. There will be an optional pick up point at Hawkesbury Upton for a shorter 3.5km walk. We shall be ending the afternoon with a Barbecue and drinks from 4pm. Entrance to the walk will be £5, but children can collect sponsorship. Forms are available from school or from our website. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information. So please sign up, come along and enjoy a fun afternoon for all the family. Dogs and Pokemon go enthusiasts are of course welcome. The Friends would also like to say a fond farewell to our year 6 leavers, we shall miss you. Best wishes for the future and thank you to the families for all of their years of support of the FOHS MEMORIES OF HILLESLEY.. My mother Brenda Minett (sister to John, Charles, Gwen and Harriet) was born at Greenfields Farm and later the family lived at Church View, Vicarage Lane. She left KLB to train as a nurse in Bristol, meeting my father Malcolm, a doctor, on a hospital ship during the war. They married at St Giles on May 5th 1945. After a short time in Bristol they moved to Sheffield, where my father took up a post with the newly formed National Health Service. My brother and I were born in Sheffield, and christened at St Giles. Every Easter we would stay with with Granny and Grampy - after Grampy died in 1951 it was just Granny Elizabeth - at Church View, together with Martin and his parents and Uncle Charlie (a butcher in Stroud) and Auntie Gwen and Uncle Fitz visiting from Yate. Auntie Joan loved wild flowers and I remember going out with her to pick primroses which we arranged in jam jars around the cottage. I loved to walk down Day House Lane to the farm searching for snails in the hedgerows. A special highlight was to

climb to the top of Hawkesbury Monument. No TV in those days, but there was an enormous radio marked with mysterious foreign stations and we always listened to the Boat Race. We made our own entertainment in the evenings, the aunts nattering round the fire and the men playing card games at the big table. I remember being sent to bed feeling miffed that Martin was allowed to stay up later (well he was four years older). I don't recall when electricity came but I do remember oil lamps, taking a candle to bed, an icy cold bathroom; Granny cooking bacon for breakfast on a Calor gas stove, and a walk-in pantry with its rows of Kilner jars of bottled fruit. My brother and I spent our pennies, threepenny bits (and possibly sixpences) at Hopkins' shop (now Moore's) on gobstoppers, four-a-penny chews, flying saucers, sherbet fountains and liquorice laces. A favourite was Eiffel Tower lemonade powder, and rainbow crystals in a little paper bag that you could dip your fingers into...we had colourful hands but amazingly kept our teeth! After Granny died in 1964 we all got on with our lives, but I visit your special village when I can, as my family now rest in the churchyard. Anthea Johnson (nee Ferguson)

As I write this the 4th Anniversary Celebrations have just concluded, and a lot of people involved in its organisation could do with a few days off! The weather was kind, the food and drink were great, the music was varied and excellent, and the turnout – all three days – was magnificent. Thanks to you for your support, to the staff for their tireless efforts, and most of all to Dan for his fantastic organisational skills, attention to detail, and enthusiasm. Notice: if anyone took home a grey folding canvas ‘director’s chair’ by mistake on Saturday please can you return it to The Fleece for collection – it’s mine! We took it there for the weekend but only the canvas bag was there on Sunday… Attending on Saturday 23rd were Rod and Karen, our new tenants. On 5th September we embark upon a new chapter in the story of The Fleece when they take charge and the Board can step back. It’s an exciting prospect; they have a great deal of pub experience, know how to keep a good pint, and have lots of ideas on how to build on HCPL’s successes to

date. I hope that everyone will support them in making The Fleece a thriving pub – they will make the decisions in future, but it will still be the community’s pub after all.

Upcoming events in the pub are dominated by the regular activities (though Quiz Night is taking a summer break). So coming up we have:

Community Coffee Morning Wednesday 10th August, 10:30 am –12 noon. Come along and enjoy a coffee break with your friends and neighbours. Only £3.00 per head for a cup of tea/ coffee and cake. Good company and charity raffle.

Acoustic Evening Sunday 14th August 8-9.30pm FREE Held on the second Sunday of each month, why not come along to sing, play or recite – or just enjoy the entertainment? Electric keyboard now available.

Vinyl Night Sun 21st August - 7.30pm, FREE. Yes, some of us still have them, and others still buy them!! This musical ‘tear and share’ is growing in popularity. Grasp an opportunity to dust off those cherished singles and LP’S and re-live the moment while relaxing with a drink, and enjoying the banter with fellow music lovers. If you don’t have vinyl, come anyway....and discover what we were listening to

back in the day. The theme this month is ‘Heaven & Hell’.

And our regular bike rides are continuing. Every Thursday 6:15pm, FREE. Leaving together from the Fleece at around 6:15, and heading out for about an hour or so, covering 10-15 miles, and then returning to the Fleece.

Happy Hour - Monday to Friday 3pm - 7pm. Enjoy a glass of Ale, Fosters or Thatcher’s Gold or a small glass of house wine for only £2.80. A warm welcome awaits from everyone at The Fleece. * Thank you for supporting

Meetings are held at 8pm on the 4th Monday of the month in the Methodist Hall in Back Street. I can hardly believe the way that everything is growing. Our roses are usually over quite quickly but this year they seem to go on and on. And the fuchsias are so full of flowers that they are bending the stems - that blast of fire up the mites backsides from my blow torch last year really worked. I’ve never seen the Hebe’s so full of blossom and the honeysuckle scent is so sweet that it’s giving me a headache. We’ve had a good crop of broad beans and the runner beans are (at time of writing) getting there. Our meetings this year have included talks on winter container plants, making gypsy flowers, the way that flowers range from being flamboyant to demure, making a winter garden, living on the Scilly Isles, caring for houseplants, enjoying herbaceous perennials and ‘Brussel’s sprouts - an EU conspiracy’. We have also had several trips out – to Hampton Court near Leominster, to Hookhouse Pottery and to Dewstowe. The debate over compost rumbles on - sell-by dates, is there a difference between multi-purpose and

Page 6: The printing of the newsletter is paid for from advertising revenue … · 2016. 11. 11. · Hillesley Happenings is produced by Carol Dawson, 2 Farmcote (Tel/Fax : 842014; e-mail:

all-purpose, is it better to use home made compost or ‘green waste’ from local councils, is peat-free compost any good? As ‘old blues eye’s’ said ‘It was a very good year’. We do not meet in August but I will give you details of future meetings in the September magazine. And don’t forget to put loads of stuff in the Hawkesbury Show on Saturday 27th August! If you are not a member and would like to hear a speaker that takes your fancy, then come along as a guest – entry £3. For further information, contact Terry Truebody on 01454 238364. HAWKESBURY STORES UPDATE We’re now more than a month into community ownership of Hawkesbury Stores, and hopefully you’ve been pleased with the service so far! Everyone at the Stores has been delighted with the level of custom and volunteer support, and we’ll keep striving for more of both to make this a successful and sustainable village asset. Here are the highlights from our first few weeks:

Staff and volunteers Kath and Kate (our paid staff) increased their hours in the first few weeks to get us off to a flying start, and to train our plucky volunteers. Volunteering in-store has proved to be a sociable way to spend a few

hours each week, so give it a try! Contact Moira Fozard to find out more about volunteering. Email [email protected] or call 238281.

Lower prices We’re keeping a close eye on prices and we estimate that up to one third of items now cost less in Hawkesbury Stores. We lowered the price of 2L of milk by 16 pence, to £1.89.

Appearance of the Stores Thanks to a small army of hard-working and skilled volunteers we have our new colours and signage on the shopfront and some interior shelving, as well as hanging baskets adding a beautiful flourish! The work doesn’t stop there. We’re applying for grant funding to help us transform the Stores’ interior and will gradually be making more improvements in the meantime.

New products and services The shelves are filling up! We’ve brought in delicious new breads, eco-friendly products, a wider choice of wines and should have sausages from France Lane Farm by the time you read this. We’ve had some super local produce donated – from cucumbers to herbs – and ‘John’s Fresh Grimsby Fish’ comes each Wednesday morning (10.50-11.20am) to sell outside the Stores.

Keeping up to date Over 150 people are following our updates via our Facebook page (search ‘Hawkesbury Stores’ on Facebook) and our website www.hawkesbury-stores.co.uk is live and looking wonderful thanks to Jon Wallace and Karen Le Marquand (two more amazing volunteers). We’ll be sending out a regular e-newsletter – you can subscribe through the website - as well as updating you on important news with posters in-store and through this essential read! THE MACMILLAN COTSWOLD WAY MIGHTY HIKE Chris and Jenny are both humbled and grateful for all the donations to Macmillan. The walk didn't go quite as planned, with Chris bailing out, exhausted, at 17 miles. But Jenny soldiered on, and completed the 26 (27? 28? who knows?) miles looking fit for a few more. The organisation was amazing and, yes, we would do it again! We're proud to have raised well over £1,000 for Macmillan, and we would still welcome donations through www.justgiving.com/hillesleychris or www.justgiving.com/hillesleyjenny. Chris & Jenny
