Hi-Lites – February 2018

Time goes by fast when you’re having fun! Monday February 12th marks our 25th anniversary and you are invited to join Ed Taylor, our first President, Stan Orr, first Deputy Treasurer, and several charter members in celebrating. Thanks to the initiative of these gentlemen we have enjoyed 25 years of fellowship, interesting and entertaining speakers, and a wonderful variety of different events.

Our meeting on Monday offers more of the same plus the opportunity to thank these guys in person. Mike Wain, 25th Anniversary Committee

Guest Speaker – Karen Candy

Karen Candy has been the Executive Director for Carpenter Hospice since 2013. With more than 30 years of healthcare experience, Karen’s diverse background has instilled in her dedication to patients and quality healthcare. Karen holds a Master’s degree in Leadership from Royal Roads University and has excelled in leadership roles both locally and provincially including Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare and CritiCall Ontario. Karen thrives in organizations that are value based, innovative, and collaborative. She values opportunities to help shape the future in a community and inspires others through her positive attitude, actions and energy.

The landscape of palliative care is changing. The number of people requiring end-of-life care is growing. Our aging population means a greater demand for palliative care programs and services. How we define palliative care has also changed. No longer is palliative care just the last few days or weeks of a person’s life. Palliative care now includes the life limiting diagnosis through to bereavement. When polled, the majority of Canadians wish to die at home, yet most die in hospital or long term care homes. Navigating the medical system can be daunting and understanding

… President’s Message Continued

I received correspondence from V.P. Bob Boone, who is also director Ontario District 3. He gave advanced notice of the district meeting on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. The location is Credit Valley Golf Club in Mississauga. The meeting includes a buffet lunch for $25. Interested members are invited to talk to me about attending. Our meeting is on February 12th with our speaker Karen Candy of Carpenter Hospice. I look forward to meeting with you then. In the meantime remember that love will be in the air on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Ronald Luxon, President

the palliative care options available to you or a loved one confusing. In planning for the future of palliative care, Carpenter Hospice is committed to expanding our programs and services to meet the needs of Burlington residents.

Membership We are still awaiting the last few stragglers to settle their currently due membership fees. We imagine, that like Mike McInnes, they are off in warmer climes - please enjoy. We will drop a few numbers this year and hope to stay around 140 members, however the grim reaper, relocations outside of Burlington and age are taking a toll on our numbers. We will be in a position, in due course, to confirm our numbers and we thank the majority who have paid their fees. We are looking for additional “new rookies”, so if your friends, relatives or even so young a lad as you enquire, invite them to come and enjoy the Probus experience.

For those who are attending our February 12 meeting, see you there, and if you wish to check if you are current or not with your fees, I’ll be available at the back of the room. Peter Hughes, acting Membership Chair

Extreme Weather Event

The Art Gallery of Burlington has advised us of the following procedure in the event of extreme weather the night before our meetings: • We ask that all guests call the AGB’s main line

for an update on our status.

• Should an extreme weather event occur over night we will have a message on the main greeting by 7am stating that the Gallery is CLOSED due to the weather.

• If the message does not immediately say we are CLOSED consider the AGB to be open for morning events (up until 2pm).

• Staff may not be able to get into the building to post signs on the doors or answer calls so please call the Gallery’s main line so unnecessary travel is avoided

• If we have lost power, our phone lines will be down and on the main message there will be silence. In this case please consider the Gallery CLOSED and do not come in for your event.

• Main Reception 905.632.7796 ext “0”.
