Baramhat 11, 1727

The prodigal son

� “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give

me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not

many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and

there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.” (Luke 15: 11 – 13) How bold is this son

who dared to ask his share of the heritage while his father is still alive, thinking that being in

his father’s house is restricting his freedom and a symbol of humiliation and slavery. Then he

ran away imagining that this is the way to freedom.

� God granted man the grace of being his son, and He gave him freedom of will. But man

returned those gifts by staleness, he used the freedom against God Himself and caused Him

many sufferings. The Bible says about the younger son “And not many days after, the

younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his

possessions with prodigal living” (Luke 15: 13) which means that the father’s wealth was not

only money but included land, sheep, fields; so, the son collected everything and journeyed. Of

course he did not take land or sheep but he sold the entire heritage and that must have caused

great pain to the father who spent his life working to collect this money. The son considered

actually that his father was dead. By then he lost any right to be a son as he himself had said

“Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be

called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants”.

� The son offended his father and abused the freedom the father gave him, which is the case of

anyone who leaves his Heavenly Father, and moves away from the church, thinking that the

church restricts his freedom while he wants to throw himself in the world and its lusts. He

thinks that the church obstructs his way. Some may think that running away from the house of

God is the freedom, but they will find out that they scattered their eternal heritage. Saint

Kebrianus says “Any one who remains outside the church is standing out of the camp of

God… anyone whom the church is not his mother cannot have God as Father”.

� “But when he came to himself” means that he remembered the wealth and comfort which he

enjoyed in his father’s house. He started to wake up from his sleep and look to the state he has

reached between the pigs. He could stand still at this extent and let his dignity and pride

prevent him from taking an action, but he arose and came to his father, he took a positive

action. It was not just thoughts but he took the action. While he was wondering what to say and

how to apologize, his father was busy thinking how to prepare to receive the returning son.

� How much we are in need, my beloved, to sit under the cross and review our lives so that the

Lord Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to reprimand us for our sins while, in the same time, He will

comfort us and rejoices our hearts so that we return to the lap of the Father.

CHURCH NEWS

1. The commemoration of the apparition of the holy Virgin Mary in Shoubra in 1986 will be

next Friday and the commemoration of the martyrdom of saint Sidhom Bishay and the

departure of our holy father hegomen Mikhail Ibrahim will be next Saturday.

2. the topic of next Saturday’s Bible study will be about the family in the book of

Deuteronomy.

3. The church started a service to help our children in their studies every Sunday from 1:00 till

5:00 p.m.

4. The church will print a limited number of the two Pascha books, to reserve a copy please

contact the bookstore.

5. Sons of Light group will be holding a spiritual day and a Bowling outing on Saturday

March 26, 2011. For more information kindly contact the servants of the group.

6. Parents meeting for grades 4, 5, 6 & 7 will be held at church on Sunday, March 27 at 2:15

p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend and meet Sunday School servants.

7. Spiritual day (sleep over at church) for kids from grade 4 - 7. Activities will start on

Friday, April 1st. at 7:30 p.m. ending Saturday, April 2nd. at 2:30 p.m.

Condolences

The church shares the feelings of the family of our beloved father Mikhail Aziz

for the departure of his aunt Evelyne Aziz Youssef.

May the Lord repose her soul in the bosom of the saints.

reposed in the bosom of the saints:

1. the departed Mariam Kaldas; she is the mother of Sameh Soliman and his wife Brigitte, Adel,

Samer, Bassam and Amal; and grandmother of Sabrina, Marc-Antonio, Rita, Miriam, Luke and

Maria.

2. The departed Aziz Beshara, he is the husband of Mrs. Amal and father of Maged and Robert.
