Wireless Evolution to 3G

Wireless cell phone use has been one of the big Telecom success stories in last 20 years

GSM and CDMA digital wireless introduced in 90’s and still in use today (2G)

Move to wireless data applications (2.5 G / GPRS/ EVDO) in last few years

Promise of 3G (Third Generation Wireless) is to offer bigger pipes, much greater flexibility and preserve/extend mobilility

Impact of IP

First round of 3G based on circuit switched networks

In parallel, big move to Voice over IP in landline networks

Wireless community also wants to move to IP, but needs to upgrade infrastructure

Move to IP and desire to support new, richer multimedia applications were new drivers

Result: New IP-based infrastructure needed for 3G networks

Introducing IMS

Wireless industry sought to solve these issues and move to IP-based services– Resulting architecture is called IP Multimedia

Subsystem or IMS– Devised by the Third Generation Partnership

Project (3GPP)– Also endorsed by the CDMA based 3GPP2– IMS began in the wireless community, but is now

being accepted by a variety of carriers and industry organizations

– Now envisioned for use on many different types of networks, including WiFi and landline

IMS and Application Developers

IMS is the new wireless service architecture– Over time, it will fully replace existing 2G service

approaches

Well suited for applications which use multimedia and communications

Application developers can focus on the application or service– IMS provides the infrastructure with tools like the

MRF for rich media and Diameter for accounting

Building Blocks for 3G - IMS

IMS provides separates applications from underlying infrastructure

Promotes scalability and ability to re-use common components to support multiple applcations

An example is the MRF or Media Resource Function of IMS– MRF handles media handling, including Voice

Play/Record, Video Play/Record, Tone Detect – Collect, …

Building the Network – MRF Example

Many of the 3G – IMS components can be built using standard off-the-shelf servers

For example: – MRF can be built using PC server based CPUs– Movement toward MRF as Software that can run

on various hardware platforms Examples of MRF Topology Choices

– ATCA / uTCA Chassis with CPU blade– Blade Server – 1U / 2U appliance– Stratus Fault Tolerant Server

Status of 3G / IMS Standards

Current Standard version of IMS is 3GPP Release 6– Completed in April, 2005– Provides most high level IMS interfaces– Available for use on wireless and Wi-Fi networks

Updated version will be Release 7– Targeted for completion in H1, 2007– Many more interfaces will be specified with

additional details– Additional progress is also expected in connecting

to a variety of networks
