on behalf of the greater ct/Western MA chapter, welcome to the
2020 virtual Promise Ball! While we are disappointed we cannot meet
and celebrate together in person this year, we still can come together
virtually and make a huge impact on the type 1 diabetes community!

dr. gerald & Marilyn fishbone and dr. Milt & Joan Wallack for their un-
wavering commitment to Jdrf’s mission. their leadership, tireless ad-
vocacy and fundraising efforts have helped position Jdrf today as the
leading global organization focused on t1d research.
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this
evening so special, particularly this year’s Promise Ball chair Jane
cerosky and incredible auction and planning committee volunteers
who have dedicated their time and talents to this event. A huge thank
you to our corporate chair tony Abate and his cigna team, who this
year went over $2 million raised for Jdrf.
We also would like to thank this year’s fund A cure chair harris Wal-
lack and his uncle scott fishbone, who will be sharing their story of
how t1d has impacted their family for two generations.
We hope you enjoy our virtual auction and program. on behalf of all of
us at Jdrf, a sincere thank you for making a difference in the lives of
millions of individuals and families living with this disease.

Jdrf works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions

My name is harris Wallack. i am 24 years old and i was diagnosed with type one diabetes(t1d) in 2001. But i like to say, it is actually my parents, Lisa and neil Wallack, who were di-agnosed when i was 5. i myself did not take on much of the burden of managing the diseaseuntil i was a teenager. i often hear about the struggles of the person living with t1d and i al-ways think to myself how grateful i am for having such a strong support system around me.As most t1d parents know, the condition has a constant mental and physical effect on theirlives. they worry about the short-term and long-term effects on their child’s health. And theymust also think and worry about t1d’s practical challenges. from making doctors’ appoint-ments, ordering supplies, and battling with insurance companies, to weighing and measuringevery gram of carbohydrate, and constantly monitoring blood glucose levels…it is a never-ending burden.
now that i am responsible for my own diabetes care, i appreciate how much work my parentshad put in (and continue to put in) to keeping me safe and healthy. i still remember what itwas like in the early days after my diagnosis when my parents drew up insulin syringes andhad to check my blood sugar every few hours with finger pricks, including throughout thenight. the advances that i have seen over my lifetime are amazing. i now have an insulinpump that communicates with a continuous glucose monitor to help keep my blood sugar inrange. And all of this i can access from an app on my phone. this has lessened the burdenof living with t1d. But the challenge is still there, every hour of every day.
And i am even more appreciative when i think of how far we have come since my Uncle scottwas diagnosed at the age of just 18 months in 1970. Back then, my grandparents Marilynand gerald fishbone, had to squeeze his diapers over urine strips to measure his sugar level, albeit knowing that the urine reading only indicated his true blood sugar from 6 hours prior.oftentimes they had to give him juice whenever he seemed “off”, not knowing if his bloodsugar was actually 50 or 500. the progress we see today would not have been possible with-out Jdrf, its volunteers and donors, and a strategic plan to conquer t1d.
i am so proud that both sets of my grandparents, Marilyn and gerald fishbone and Joan andMilton Wallack, are being honored at the 2020 Jdrf Promise Ball on May 9th, 2020, for theirextraordinary contributions to Jdrf and the t1d community. in 1970, my grandmother, Mar-ilyn, founded the new haven Jdrf chapter, and in the 1980s, my grandfather gerry servedas Jdrf international Board chair. My grandfather Milt has been a leader at Jdrf and indriving the state of connecticut to support stem cell and other diabetes-related research, andmy grandmother Joan has done amazing work with the Jdrf Brew for the cure event. Mygrandparents have devoted nearly 140 cumulative years of their lives on the front lines withJdrf, fighting for advocacy, treatments, and a cure for me, for my Uncle scott, and for all ofyou and your loved ones affected by t1d.

Dr. Gerald & Marilyn Fishbone
and Dr. Milton & Joan Wallack
dr. gerald and Marilyn fishbone became involved with Jdrf in 1973, fouryears after their son, scott, was diagnosed with t1d at the young age of 18months. their involvement began by founding the Jdrf greater new havenchapter which Marilyn led as president of the board for eight years. Marilynhelped to create a gala event in new haven and through her leadership andfundraising efforts raised over $1.5 million for Jdrf. gerald became involvedon a national level as a board member and then chairman of the internationalBoard of directors from 1981-1984, the highest volunteer leadership positionin the organization. he was an active member of the research committee formore than 42 years providing medical insight and review of each research pro-posal received by Jdrf, and served for 15 years as editor of countdown mag-azine. the fishbones have dedicated more than 45 years to Jdrf, serving inkey local and national leadership roles, raising millions for t1d research andbeing passionate advocates for the mission of Jdrf, all of which continues tothis day. their involvement deepened again in 2001 when harris, the grandsonof both the fishbones and Wallacks, was diagnosed with t1d at the age of 5.
dr. Milton and Joan Wallack became involved with Jdrf when harris was di-agnosed with t1d. Milt joined the Board of the Jdrf greater new havenchapter and served as the president. he currently serves as a board chairper-son of the nominations committee. As part of his commitment to help find acure for t1d, Milt was founder of the ct stem cell coalition, successfully ad-vocating for stem cell legislation resulting in $100 million dollars of state fundingover a 10 year period. he also helped create the Metabolic research Alliance(MrA) a consortium of yale, Uconn, Jackson Lab (Jax) and Weizmann insti-tute in israel, with a mission to pursue research for metabolic diseases with afocus of diabetes. Joan joined the greater ct/Western MA chapter board in2010 and created the Jdrf “Brew for a cure”, which has raised more than$230,000 for t1d research.

T1D TODAYType 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it. People with T1D must regularly monitor their blood sugar level, inject or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance their insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, and even with intensive disease management, a significant portion of the day is still spent with either high or low blood sugar levels, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation.

NANCY JONES DIABETESCHAMPION AWARD
Jdrf is proud to be honoring dr. Kevan herold at the 2020
Promise Ball with the nancy Jones diabetes champion
Award on behalf of the Jdrf new england chapter. dr.
herold is receiving this award for his leadership in trialnet’s
teplizumab Prevention study, showing that the immunother-
apy drug teplizumab delayed t1d diagnosis a median of two
years in high-risk children and adults. this is the first study
to demonstrate that a drug can delay t1d diagnosis by two
years in people at high risk and highlights that t1d is an au-
toimmune disease that can be delayed with immune therapy.
these results and the potential impact for people living with
t1d and their families is exactly why Jdrf funds prevention
research. delaying the progression of the disease is an es-
sential and impactful step toward the prevention, and ulti-
mately a cure for type one, as a delay in diagnosis is likely
to have long-term benefits on glycemic control and the de-
velopment of acute and long-term complications. each day
without t1d matters. A two-year delay in diagnosis is a clin-
ically important, advancement that gets us steps closer to our
vision of a world without t1d.
