THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF THE RMV COMPACTORS 16 March 2017 To help protect our environment in a healthy and economic manner the following are the disposal practices to be used by the RMV unit owners. Much of our household waste can be brought to and disposed of in the two compactors located in the building at the main entrance to RMV. RECYCLING: A large proportion of our waste can be recycled thereby eliminating a significant volume that needs to be disposed of by incineration or landfill. RMV gets paid for the recyclable waste and therefore it is an economic benefit to us all to recycle as much as possible. That said, however, it is important that the waste going into the recycling compactor in fact be recyclable and not contaminated with non-recyclable waste. ATTACHMENT 1. Permitted recyclable waste includes cardboard, magazines, newspapers, paperboard, paper cardboard including dairy and juice containers, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles (numbers #1 – 7 on bottom of container) and tin/aluminum and steel cans. Please remove caps and rings from bottles and jars. There should be no food residue on this waste. Prohibited from the recycling compacter food waste, plastic wrap, PLASTIC BAGS, foam cups and containers, construction debris, window glass, light bulbs and shredded paper. If any of the prohibited materials are found in the recycling waste stream the receiving facility could refuse to accept the load and our waste hauler could charge RMV the cost of reshipping as well as the higher cost of disposal. PLEASE DO NOT PUT MATERIALS IN THE COMPACTORS THAT DO NOT FIT AS IT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE AND RESULT IN COSTLY REPAIRS Also if you are having work done in your unit resulting is demolition material, you should arrange for disposal by your contractor off-site. The same goes for appliances and hot water heaters. HAZARDOUS/SPECIALWASTE: None of these materials should be disposed in either of the RMV compactors. Please see ATTACHMENT 2- Hazardous wastes including oil, automobile tires rechargeable batteries, computer monitors and televisions, propane tanks, materials containing mercury These items can be disposed at the Norton Highway Department, 70 Rear Main Street on the 2 nd and 4 th Saturdays from 8:30 to 11:30AM MEDICAL WASTE/SHARPS: Needles, syringes and other sharp medical waste can be disposed of at the Norton Board of Health. This waste must be placed in an appropriate sharps container available at most pharmacies. UNUSED/EXPIRED MEDICATIONS: Your unused medications should be taken to the Norton Police Department where they can safely dispose of them. DO NOT put them in your household rubbish or flush them down the drain. This practice has resulted in some medications appearing in our surface and ground waters.
