K to 12 Was first proposed in

1925 when Manuel L. Quezon was the Senate President and Leonard Wood was the Civil Governor in the Philippines.

Based on DepEd findings;

BACKGROUND In NUMBER:

• The Philippines has not met the standard required the students to compete on an international level.

• Our country ranked the lowest score in international test such as the 2003 (TIMMS (TRENDS IN INTERNATIONAL MATH & SCIENCE STUDY)

Major Reforms in Basic Education;

The ADDITION of JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL and SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

It is the TWO YEARS of SPECIALIZED EDUCATION where STUDENTS may choose a specialization based on:

AptitudeInterest

School capacity

Senior High SchoolGrades 11 to 12 (16 – 17 years old)

The Seven Learning Areas under the CORE CURRICULUM

are:1.Languages2.Literature3.Communication4.Mathematics 5.Philosophy6.Natural Sciences7.Social Sciences

After graduating from Senior High, students will choose among three tracks: 1. Academic 2. Technical – Vocational – Livelihood 3. Sports and Arts

These Academic Tracts includes three strands:1.Business, Accountancy, Management2.Humanities, Education, Social Sciences

(HESS) 3.Science, Technology, Mathematics,

Engineering

Recommended Subject areas to be taken based on College Readiness Standards (CRS):1.Science ( Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Earth

Science)2.Mathematics ( including Statistics)3.English4.Filipino5.Literature6.Humanities7.Social Science

Subject areas should be delivered based on:8.Content9.Performance

Accdg. to Dr. Isagani R. Cruz, High School students entering in College should be proficient in terms of:

1. The different languages in the Philippines.

2. At least 10 major languages of the Philippines.

3. Different levels of discourse in Filipino.

Looking forward at the COLLEGE READINESS STANDARS :

SY 2016 – 2017 16 years old in grade 11

SY 2017 – 2018 17 years old in grade 12

students will absorb knowledge equivalent to what students study in COMPARATIVE LITERATURE classes of today..

Finally, in March 2018 the first batch of K to 12 Graduates marches on.

Despite of the negative issues & concerns regarding the implementation of K to 12 Curriculum in our country, let as all “Think Out of the Box” and be “Open Minded” at all times.
