Goodwin Class I (circa 670): prototype a Sicilian
follis of Constantine IV
DOC 25; 2.61 gms; EBCC 23.80; 1559.11 Notes on post-EBCC coins
2146.17: Although the date arrangement is
garbled the obverse bears a strong stylistic
resemblance to the three preceding coins.
2290.17: As well as the stylistic similarities to the
following coin (2079.15) both appear to try and
indicate the signature of an Imperil mint, CON and
NIKO respectively. The usual date arrangement
for year 20 appears in the reverse left field for
each but this is unlikely to be meaningful.
589.87: Exceptionally crude and almost certainly a
simple seventh century counterfeit.
2143.17: The coin is die-linked by reverse to
657b.99 and 2143a.17; and by obverse to the
latter.
2299.18: Rare. Cursive m with ”cross-bar” and K
above - not noted in MIB. A variety of Class 4 has
only been published once - in an article by Simon
Bendall in N.Circ., 1997 pp. 198-200. Where the
date is visible, it has always been year 7.
Goodwin: “Although the dies for this variety seem
to be reasonably well-engraved, it is usually (as in
this case) very carelessly overstruck on an Inper
const type. The Inper const coins are only really
found in Syria, so did they go back to
Constantinople to be overstruck? This seems
unlikely, so this barred m variety may be some
sort of Byzantine military issue struck in Syria
during an unrecorded campaign.”
2148.17: Die duplicate of SICA 528 & Waage
2254.
2251.17: Die-linked to 2234.17 and of unusually
good manufacture.
2564.19: A die duplicate of 381.91. The prototype
may be a Class III solidus of Constans II.
