Atlanta-College Park District UMW Newsleer Summer 2019 1 Dear Sisters in Christ, During this year when we are focusing on the mass incarceration of people of color, we especially are touched by the plight of children and youth here in our neighborhoods, state, country, and the world. The school-to-prison pipeline is real for many children in our communities. Gun violence is on the minds of many of our children each school day as they seek to learn. Many children live with the constant fear of police violence for the slightest infraction, or no infraction at all. Migrant children are living in deplorably dirty and unsafe conditions even as I write this message. In fact, this very day, we were all moved to tears as we saw the photo of a father and his 23-month-old daughter drown trying to make it to the shores of “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” What can we do other than pray? We must continue our efforts however meager they appear to do what we can to minister to our children and youth. We must find ways to respond to their cries. Through our back-to-school bashes, UMCOR school kits, summer feeding programs, camps, and so on, we must never stop trying to make the lives of these our progeny safe and secure. We must never fail to try to feed and clothe them. We must use every opportunity to nurture and care for their physical and emotional needs. We must remember the words of Jesus Christ: “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” (Luke 18:16, RSV) As the United Methodist Women of this district, we commit ourselves to continue to minister to children, youth, and women. Ben Hill UMW Continues to Celebrate Our Gifts Of Giving

Meeting Our Reading Plan Challenge

During our June monthly meeting, we engaged in a book review “The Same Sky” by Amanda Eyre Ward for our Reading Program. Pamela Carnes facilitated our book discussion. Our Reading Program encourages us to be critical thinkers and an opportunity to expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission. It also strengthens us in local and global Christian mission.

Participants at Book Review Guest Facilitator-Pamela Carnes

Ben Hill UMW donated 100

school kits to UMCOR. UMW

members provided a helping

hand to assemble the kits.

The kits contain essential

school supplies to help

students be successful in

school. Our support helps

provide necessities to others

during times of need.

BETHEL UMW LOUISE FOSTER, UMW MEMBER

On Saturday, June 1, Bethel United Methodist Women (UMW) prepared an honorary Pre-Father’s Day breakfast for the United Methodist Men (UMM). Faithful was the general theme of the activities that morning. Before serving the breakfast, Barbara Lord read an exposition on “Faithful,” then she led the song, “Faith of Our Fathers,” of which three verses were sung. She ended with a prayer of thanksgiving and faith. Ike locket gave a brief history of verses 5 – 8 from the book of Romans before delving into the study of Romans 12:5-8 reviewed earlier in the month by the men. He mentioned the theme for the verses under study could very well be unity which embodies faithfulness. My, oh my, what a breakfast feast! Not only was the meal enjoyable but the setting was beautiful as well. Even though grits, eggs, breakfast casseroles, biscuits and a variety of sausages were served along with EB’s salmon specialty. EB’s salmon specialty seemed to be the biggest hit. Of course there were breakfast condiments, fresh fruit compost, coffee, juices and water. Before separating for their monthly unit meeting, individual wrapped gifts bearing each man’s name were distributed, with Brother Perry, UMM president being responsible for getting gifts to the men that were absent. It was an uplifting start for an early morning.

What You Do With Now

It is not your fault. But it is your responsibility.

The choices you have made have brought you to where you

are now. And so have other factors that are completely

beyond your control.

There's nothing to be gained by blaming yourself for the way your life has

unfolded. There's everything to be gained by actively taking full responsibility for

the way your life proceeds.

The route you traveled to this point no longer matters, for nothing can be

done to change it. What truly matters is what you do with now.

Life is always unpredictable, yet there's something you can count on. The

more sincerely and diligently you give yourself to the living of it, the more

life will go your way.

In this moment is every possibility. Take responsibility for it all, and bring

the best of those possibilities to life.
