As this issue is the last one for the year, I take this opportunity of wishing all our readers and their families a very Happy Christmas and a Bright and Prosperous New Year.

It has certainly been an eventful year in many ways, with the new technology of the iPad coming into our method of producing news and pictures. I hope that the list of stories and pictures we have made available for you all to read in the printed copy of the magazine, on the website and iPad have been to your liking.

Our next issue in February will carry the insert of the Queensland Freemason Directory and it is our earnest request that you get any alterations and additions from last year into UGLQ office as early as possible. With holidays in December and January, it would be a great help if these changes could come in early December so your requirements can be attended to for the Directory, because we also have to complete the February 2013 issue of the magazine at the same time.

As I travel far and wide throughout the State I receive so much encouragement and support from Freemasons and their families. This also multiplies from community leaders who are more and more realising the Queensland Freemasons serve their local communities in so many ways and never put up their hands for recognition for the great work they do. I recently attended a centenary meeting at Millmerran on the Darling Downs and was so impressed with the Mayor of the Toowoomba Regional Council with his understanding of local communities and the necessity to engage and listen before the plans were put to action. In my address I mentioned that the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the State of Israel is a Palestinian. The mayor applauded the Freemasons with the tolerance they display with good men of all faiths. As a fraternity we should always show our flexibility to listen and accommodate different points of view. To encourage and support those who want to serve in many different capacities. Winners and Losers The winner sees an answer for every problem.The loser sees a problem for every answer.The winner is always part of the answer.The loser is always part of the problem.The winner says “it may be difficult, but it’s possible.”The loser says, “it may be possible, but it’s too difficult.” As 2012 draws to a close and we of many faiths celebrate this festive season with family and friends let us pause for a moment for some reflection. To be mindful of those who have lost love ones during the last year.To be thankful for family and friends.To be thankful for kind words and gestures from friends and colleagues.To be thankful for achievements and success.To be grateful for reunions during the festive season. As individuals and as a fraternity we should focus on peace and goodwill to our fellow human beings. Open House 2012

Open House 2012 has proved to be a great asset to Freemasonry in Queensland when a record 2577 visitors entered the building to view the various lodge rooms, the displays and the Grand Hall on Saturday, October 6.

This is the third year of Brisbane Open House. The first year attracted slightly over 2000 visitors to our building at 111 Ann Street. The second year there were 2262, and this year 2577.

One pleasing feature of the project each year is the number of Freemasons and ladies who spent all day showing visitors around the displays and various parts of the building. This year over 70 brethren and ladies worked hard to provide a friendly welcome to all who entered the building. The Grand Master remarked that he was pleased with the result and the Coordinator, RWBro Greg Goding GSWks expressed his thanks to all who participated.

“Movember” is on the move again with Freemasons once again playing an important part in their efforts to raise funds for prostate cancer research and depression.

The Movember team captain for Freemasons Queensland this year is VWBro Paul Holland AGSWks, pictured left, the secretary of Yeronga Lodge No 246, and a member of the UGLQ membership and marketing committee.

Paul has registered for Movember and pledged to grow a moustache for 30 days to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. He wants many Freemasons to do the same and form teams to raise money and enjoy competitiveness amongst those participating.

Last year’s Movember Appeal was a great success with the total amount raised by Freemasons in Australia being $57,000 and Queensland entrants being responsible for over $14,000. Paul is extremely keen to encourage a large number of Freemasons in Queensland to see if they can beat that record. For those interested the Website for joining or supporting through donations is :

Meet “Solomon”, the dog being trained as a “seeing eye dog” by Guide Dogs Queensland at their Bald Hills Complex in Brisbane.

It costs $30,000 to fully train a pup to be a Guide Dog. When MWBro Adrian Burton GM was nominated and invested as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland, his wife Regina made it known that she would be adopting Guide Dogs Queensland as her charity for her husband’s term of office.

Solomon was approximately eight weeks old when the photo was taken on June 26 this year at Bald Hills. The organisation kindly offered Regina Burton the privilege of naming one of the new male puppies when $22,590 had been handed over from Grand Lodge Office to be used for Solomon’s training and upkeep. Shortly after this amount had been handed over, the Grand Wardens presented Regina with their cheque for $2150 and she has received donations from two other lodges. The International Order of Job’s Daughters Jurisdictional Guardian and Associate of last year, Mrs Donna Pankhurst and Mr Jeff Harper also assisted in a large way by choosing Guide Dogs as their charity. At the end of their year in office last September they handed over $1900 which will also be added on to the tally. Regina is very hopeful that by the end of her husband’s term of office they will have the full $30,000 acknowledged by Guide Dogs as the donation by the Masonic Fraternity. Solomon and two of his siblings have also been photographed and are in the current 2013 Guide Dogs Calender for sale by the association. He is a newborn pup in the photo but is named “Solomon”. Mrs Aileen McGregor-Lowndes of Guide Dogs Queensland has been extremely generous and helpful. She attends every ladies dinner and more often than not provides a couple of raffle prizes herself. She almost always brings an ambassador dog with her and they are always very well received by the ladies and often go in and say hello to the men and the Grand Master as well. Regina hopes that very soon Solomon will be allowed to come and visit the ladies dinner as well.

Established in 1960, Guide Dogs Queensland helps to equip, empower and educate Queenslanders who are blind or vision impaired, of all ages, with a range of orientation and mobility services. With less than seven per cent Government funding for some specific rehabilitation services, and none for the Guide Dogs, the organisation relies on the generosity of individuals, puppy sponsors, corporate support and people who leave a bequest in their Will to fund their vital work.

Members of the Bundaberg Widows of Freemasons Association recently held their 20th anniversary of the formation of the group. RWBro Tony Ozanne (representing the Grand Master) and RWBro Allan Verran travelled from Brisbane to attend the function.

Fifty six guests attended. They included the Freemasons widows and local district Freemasons and their wives. The chairman for the anniversary meeting was RWBro John Dexter.

The first meeting of the association was held on October 29, 1992. The late WorBro David Thomas was instrumental in forming it. He passed away in 2004.

Margaret Cooper, who is now in an aged care home, and Dorothy Poulsen, still active as treasurer worked on a constitution and opening and closing prayers for the meetings.

At a meeting of the Petrie Preceptory at Caboolture, Fr. Adam Hunt was installed as the Preceptor by his Father–in–Law Ven. Fr. Jack Lowe who acted as the Installing Master.

Rt. Emt. Frt. John Ross and the Grand Team were present at the ceremony. They always help to make these occasions special for the members.The occasion was well attended and the “poor soldiers fare” which followed was enjoyed by all. Every soldier went away fully satisfied with the meal. There are three applications to join the Petrie Preceptory which will result in a full year’s work in front of the members. The ever-popular Stanley Pocket Diary will again be available at the Quarterly Communications to be held on Wednesday, December 5. This handy item shows the meeting and installation dates for all lodges in UGLQ for the year 2013 and has several other orders listed as well. There is also a 2014 calendar in the back of the diary. It is very handy for Freemasons attending lodge meetings apart from their own lodge. Two sets of calendars are in the diary with installation dates in the appropriate box of the calendar. One set is for lodges north of Gympie and the other set is for lodges south of Gympie. Those who have diaries are able to write the lodge meeting dates in those boxes as a reminder for them to visit on that date. And it fits in your shirt or jacket pocket.

The price of the diary is $5 and all net proceeds are donated to Masonic charities. The diary was first published in 1987 and since then over $20,000 has been donated to various charitable organisations. Order forms have been sent to all lodges. A Nann Vacuum Immobilisation Mattress has been donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service by Yeppoon and Rockhampton Freemasons. This very important unit was presented to the Rockhampton base by the Master of Yeppoon Masonic Lodge (WorBro Bruce Benson) together with the Secretary of the Rockhampton District Freemasons Driver Reviver committee (WorBro Trevor Whyte.

The cost of the unit is in excess of $1500 and was funded by Yeppoon and Rockhampton lodges, and supported by the Board of Benevolence with their “Dollar for Dollar” subsidy.

The unit is used for the transportation of trauma patients over long distances. The splint is made up of a tuff tarp type outer skin filled with tiny balls about 1 mm in diameter. The mattress is placed under the patient and then air is sucked out of the splint to form a rock hard device that prevents body movement. The mattress is used for patients being transferred with spine, pelvic and leg injuries.

Grand Master’s Flood Appeal

Alf Macdonald of the Tully Tyson Masonic Lodge presented a plaque to Tully and District Senior Citizens President Joyce Smith and Secretary Lesley Hardy on behalf of the Queensland Freemasons.

The plaque recognises the contribution by the Freemasons to the Senior

Citizens for the Post Yasi Restoration of the Senior Citizens Hall which was destroyed in Cyclone Yasi. The beautiful new building is almost complete and the Freemasons’ contribution to the hall includes the supply of air-conditioning units and furniture.

Bundaberg’s Lake Ellen playground has been officially reopened after a generous donation by the Queensland Freemasons helped restore the flood-damaged park to its former glory.

The MWBro Adrian Burton, Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland said the $65,000 donation from the Grand Master’s Flood and Cyclone Appeal was used to install a new rubber soft-fall surface under the playground equipment.“This was one of 35 projects from around the state that were funded by the appeal,” he said.

“The Bundaberg combined lodges made an application for this project to help

Bundaberg children and families.“We worked in conjunction with the local government and Bundaberg has done an exceptional job.”

Bundaberg Deputy Mayor David Batt said the Freemasons’ symbol had been incorporated into the playground mat in honour of the donation.

“It’s important the Freemasons are recognised for their contribution towards such a vital community area,” he said.

Grand Masters Flood and Cyclone Appeal relief continuesIt is now over 19 months since the Grand Master launched the appeal which raised over $1 million on behalf of the Queensland Freemasons to give aid to those who suffered from the devastating floods and the cyclone in the north which followed.

In this period, many thousands of dollars have been successfully spent in various ways to give that much needed assistance to organisations and people throughout the State.And it is still continuing.More stories of replacements, repairs and other types of aid are coming through with the Appeal Committee working hard to make sure those who have suffered are given the required assistance.

The next 2 pages contains some of the recent efforts by the committee.



RWBro Alan Townson Chairman of the Appeal Committee) and RWBro Vaughan Benn dropped in to view progress with the construction at the RSPCA in Townsville. Dog kennel units were heavily impacted by Cyclone Yasi last year. The project to rebuild ten kennels with new concrete slabs, drainage, steel framing and fencing was nearing completion when the picture was taken. The new facilities at the RSPCA Animal Refuge at the Bohle Shelter, Townsville were opened in September. The repairs have been made possible through the large donation from the Grand Master’s Cyclone and Flood Relief Appeal. The donation paid for the construction materials. Soldiers from the 3/4 Cavalry Regiment supplied the labour and members of Cleveland Lodge No 18 donated time in planting 42 trees in the area to provide valuable shade.

Project Manager Malcolm O’Brien said the money donated had been used to help replace the steelwork in the nine-kennel enclosure, insulate the area, and add three extra exercise yards to the shelter.

“We could not do it without the generosity of the Freemasons and the Army’’ he said.

RWBro Townson said that the RSPCA in Brisbane has benefited from a donation from the appeal by receiving funding to replace instrument stands, examination tables, surgical lighting and some instruments for the new Veterinary Hospital at Wacol.

Appeal Assists Riding CentreThe Grand Masters Flood and Cyclone Appeal has assisted the Cartmill Riding Centre at Burpengarry to the extent of $7500 for repairs and replacement for equipment damaged during the floods.

Morayfield Freemasons have also been assisting the Riding Centre by providing voluntary labour where possible to handle necessary repairs.

WorBro Geoff Grebert, who was Worshipful Master at the time of the floods and is now Immediate Past Master has been in charge of the work being done to help the Centre which mainly provides Riding classes for disabled adults and children. WorBro Gilbert has been assisted by RWBro Keith Ferguson and Bro Ken Warner.

On Saturday, September 15, the Grand Master MWBro Adrian Burton and his wife Regina paid a visit to Warwick to officially hand over a cheque for $7800 to the Warwick and District Tennis Association for new doors to the clubhouse.

This was a most welcome grant from the Grand Master’s Flood and Cyclone Appeal. It was a very happy occasion with the tennis association supplying a sumptuous morning tea. A good number of Warwick Lodge No 160 brethren and their wives attended the presentation.

Warwick Lodge No. 160 not only assisted the tennis association in receiving the grant for their new doors, but also sponsored, with the assistance of the Board of Benevolence and Mrs Barbara Seibel, a car for 12 months for the Warwick Blue Care at a cost of $3000.

Barron Barnett Lodge No. 146 UGLQBackground to the Lodge

The lodge was originally consecrated on August 15, 1903 under the English Constitution. RWBro Barron Barnett was the foundation Master. RWBro Barnett migrated to Queensland in 1866 and was initiated into Prince of Wales Lodge in 1869, becoming Master in 1874 and Deputy District Grand Master, Queensland EC from 1882 to 1903. In 1887 he travelled to England for the Queen Victoria Jubilee celebrations and brought back the sword currently used in Grand Lodge ceremonies, and a silver mounted Director of Ceremonies baton which he presented to Prince of Wales Lodge and which was later presented by them to Barron Barnett Lodge.

In 1903 the District Board of General Purposes recognised the need for Masonic education along the lines of the Emulation Lodge of Instruction in London. This was the initial basis on which the lodge was formed. With the formation of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland in 1921 the lodge assumed a role in both

research and education. The lodge meets in the Ann Street Centre on the third Wednesday in January, March, May, July, September and November, tyling at 7:15 p.m.

Lodge Programme 2013

January 16: “A brief Overview of Russian Freemasonry to 1995”. (By WorBro Dennis Stocks). The paper shares some observations on the founding of Freemasonry in the old Russian Empire and some of the personalities involved up to the forming of the National Grand Lodge of Russia in 1995.

March 20: “Regular Freemasonry in China” (By RWBro Graham Stead PAGM). This paper is based on the 2002 Kellerman Lecture by RWBro Stead: “The Hung Society and Freemasonry the Chinese Way”. It examines the birth and development of Regular Freemasonry in China.

May 15: RWBro Ken Wells Memorial Address to be delivered by the MW Grand

July 17: 2012 Kellerman Lecture “Crafting the Masonic vision” (By WorBro Tony Tabrett (Grand Librarian). The theme of the paper is the Art of Visualisation as a tool in crafting the Masonic Vision, developed from the 19th Century to current day ideas in regard to the character of Freemasonry including its empowering elements and recent developments in the field of visual literacy.

September 18: “The Concept of Initiation” (By Bro Andy Fowle). The paper explores the different roles and outcomes of different kinds of Initiations and analyses the common elements. Cunningham Lodge InstallationThe Cunningham No 90 Installation at the Warwick Masonic Centre in September was very well attended with a large majority of visitors travelling long distances to be there.

Redcliffe First Settlement

Savannah Tour of the far north

Redcliffe First Settlement has started the new term (August) with its very first double second degree. This was for Bro John Day (far right) and Bro Christopher Brown (on his right). In September another second degree

was held for father and son-in-law Bro George (second on the left) and Bro Kevin Semrau. This was another first, as Redcliffe First Settlement had never previously performed a ceremony for a father and son-in-law.

A Masonic outback Savannah tour is being arranged for August next year by the gulf lodges of the District Grand Lodge of Carpentaria. This tour which commences from Cairns will take its participants through the Atherton Tablelands via Kuranda, then to Ravenshoe, Mount Garnet, and through to Georgetown where they will be met by members of Sir William Wallace Lodge.

Other places they will be visiting will be Croydon, Normanton and Karumba, where they will meet up with the members of Norman Lodge. By the time they get back to Cairns they will have travelled hundreds of kilometres by bus and visited many well-known northern towns. Of course, one of the features will be the chance to get to know members of lodges over that wide expanse of the north. Both lodges at Georgetown and Normanton will be holding their Installations at the time of the tour.

Craft News

It recently came to the attention of the Carpentaria Freemasons Association that the Craft ladies of the Woodward Retirement Village and the Morinda Homes required another cupboard in the craft room at Morinda to store the finished crafts they make.They would like to acknowledge the Carpentaria Freemasons Association for the donation of a new flat pack cupboard for the craft room. Springsure Lodge No 41 recently held its installation and in one of his first duties as Worshipful Master, Wor Bro Alan Shaw presented a $3000 cheque to the Ivy Anderson Home. He was assisted by RWBro Wally Lock, PDGM who was representing the Grand Master at the Installation. The Ivy Anderson Home committee chairperson, Gail Nixon was very thankful for the donation from the lodge. She remarked it was a very generous donation and they are hoping that this will be the start of something big. “Now we have our charitable status, other people on the land and on properties will be able to donate as well and have tax deductibility” she said. The committee is raising funds to construct and operate an aged-care facility in Springsure. The Springsure Lodge actively fundraises throughout the year, raising money for organisations in need of assistance. Through fund raising efforts the brethren have recently donated and installed an irrigation system on the Springsure State School oval, purchased UHF radios for the SES, and, more recently we have made a commitment of up to $5000 to support Tresswell State School over the next twelve months, to help out with their much needed teacher’s aide and transport.

New Craft Cupboard donated

Gregory Lodge No 50 of the District Grand Lodge of Carpentaria is well known for its continual efforts in raising money for charity. At a function in Cairns, attended by RWBro Mervyn Gray PJGW UGLQ (Grand Lodge representative for Gregory Lodge), three organisations were handed cheques to help the charity they represented.

Each charity received a cheque for $3500.

Regarding the Hospital Foundation the amount of funds needed for a children’s playground is massive. To that end Gregory Lodge is combining with the Lions Club of Barrier Reef (Cairns) to jointly run a Gala Theatre Evening at the Tanks entertainment venue for a Tropical Arts presentation of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Whatever is raised will be matched dollar for dollar by the Board of Benevolence to at least an amount of $2,000 in October.

Gregory Lodge are also involved with the Cairns Little Theatre production of Calendar Girls and funds from this production will go to the Oncology unit at the Cairns Base Hospital.

Gregory Lodge No. 50 active in Charity Work

This small banner (approx A4 size) was presented by Gregory Lodge to RWBro Mervyn Gray who is the Grand Lodge representative for the lodge. RWBro Gray attended Gregory Lodge’s Charity Donation night.

The “bannerette” is based on Gregory Lodge’s large banner. Sir Augustus Gregory had given his permission many years ago for his family crest, motto and coat of arms to be used on the banner.

Ashton Lodge held their installation in September with WorBro Steven Rushton being installed as Master for the next 12 months. The installation was well attended, and the stewards for the festive board were members of Stanley Lodge No 37, which is Ashton’s “Mother” Lodge.

Caboolture Lodge has presented a Secretary’s Jewel to VW. Bro. Jack Lowe to mark the time and effort that he has given to Freemasonry and Caboolture Lodge No 266 in particular.

This jewel has never been presented to any member in Caboolture Lodge during its 94 years of operation. Jack keeps the Caboolture web site updated and modernised. He also assisted in designing

and printing the Caboolture Rituals and Rubrics which were approved by UGLQ in 2005 and are in constant use at every meeting. Thanks to the harmony, the hard work and commitment of the members the lodge has grown from 30 members to over 65 in eight years. The jewel was presented to Jack by VWBro. Stan Krieger, WorBro Noel Hall and WorBro Jim Seeleither who kept the presentation a secret until the last minute.

The William McLeod Lodge No 241 Installation held in August this year showed some historical significance thanks to the Deputy Grand Master (RWBro Dr Gary Bacon) who was present with a team of Grand Officers to conduct the Installation ceremony. Bro Brian Dixon is the new Master of the lodge. A Maul, known as The Hertzberg Maul was brought to light from the catacombs of Ann Street. It was used by MWBro Adolphus Marcus

Hertzberg at the consecration of the original lodge as Balmoral Lodge No 65 GLQ on November 7, 1914 in the Bulimba School of Arts.

The engraving on the shield at the base of the Maul is worded: “A Souvenir. Most Worshipful Brother A M Hertzberg Esq, First Pro Grand Master and Chairman of Provisional Committee for the Formation of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Queensland 29th Oct 1904 AL 5908.”

With so much degree activity going on in quite a few lodges, C H Harley lodge has participated by sharing the work. These pictures show how successful this method has become.

First Degree Tracing Board

WorBro Terry Keane of C H Harley Lodge presented an immaculate First Degree Tracing Board to eight Entered Apprentices from C H Harley, Dunellan and Wynnum Lodges in August. This picture shows a rare and most encouraging sight – all eight EAs lined up for presentation by WorBro Keane (Junior Deacon standing at the left). Another great day in paradise, another successful fete. The Carpentaria Freemasons Association which, over the last 10 years has run the Morinda Homes annual fete, recorded over $4500 net.

The majority of lodges were involved in manning the various stalls, raffles and spinning wheels, along with the OES members and their skilful cake-selling abilities. The residents as always enjoyed the festivities and the

interaction with the members, family and friends.

As they said at the end of the day: ‘’Next year will be bigger and better”!

Masonic Care Queensland had a re-furbished villa on display at the Woodward Retirement Village to coincide with the Fete. This also attracted a great amount of interest.

2nd Degree Bro. Ben Nalbantof

C H Harley Lodge member Bro Ben Nalbantof was passed to the Second Degree in September in a fine ceremony.

There were 90 brethren there to witness it and for the banquet to follow an additional 24 ladies joined them. Dennistoun Lodge goes from strength to strength with a double first degree conducted in September. Pictured above following the ceremony left to right are VWBro Gordon Ellis (AGSWks), Bro Duarne Bernhagen, WorBro Mark Paterson (Dennistoun Lodge Master) and Bro Ernest van Zyl.

At the Festive Board after the ceremony the Worshipful Master of Kianawah Lodge, Wor Bro Neville Ball, presented WorBro Paterson with a new gavel – pictured below. It is made out of Jarrah which is one of the hardest, if not the hardest, timbers in the world. According to the recipient “it will last a very, very long time and still be in use long after we have all passed to the Grand Lodge above”. There can be no doubt that Wor Bro Neville is indeed a Master craftsman and on behalf of all of the brethren of Dennistoun Lodge WorBro Paterson extended their sincere appreciation and thanks for the wonderful gesture.

Tracing Board lecture for five EAs

Tuscan presentation to GMTuscan Lodge No 235 held their Installation at the Wynnum Masonic Centre in August and it proved to be a great success. The newly invested Worshipful Master is WorBro Darryl Schmidt.

The Grand Master (MWBro Adrian Burton) and a team of Grand Lodge Officers were present for the ceremony and the well-organised Installation festive board.

Well-known Tuscan Lodge member, WorBro Rocky Price was awarded Past Grand Rank of Past Grand Sword Bearer by the Grand Master , who also presented Tuscan members WorBro Hugh Meiklejohn GPurs and WorBro Trevor Hickman PDGOrg with 40 year service jewels. Stanley Lodge No 37 conducted a Lodge of Sorrow ceremony for their late member, WorBro Harry MacKenzie following their Regular September meeting. WorBro MacKenzie was an accomplished Piper and well-known in Highland Gathering circles. Our picture shows pipers and drummers who attended and played several tunes at the ceremony. WorBro David Benn was installed as Worshipful Master of Tully Tyson Lodge at the Installation which took place in August. This is WorBro Benn’s fifth time as Worshipful Master during his Masonic career. The other four times were in his mother lodge, Silkwood between 1972 and 2001. Quite a number people came from Cairns and right through to Townsville for the Installation. WorBro Benn’s family were present for the occasion including his wife Bev, their five daughters and families.

United Service Lodge No 124 held their Installation in September and our picture shows the members with their newly installed Master, WorBro Bradley Fowler who is standing 7th from the left. RWBro Athol Harding, P.A.G.M. representing the Most Worshipful Grand Master, attended by a team of local Past and serving Grand Officers witnessed the ceremony.

The Order of the Eastern Star has a number of members residing in Masonic Care Queensland at Sandgate. They started putting on an afternoon tea for those members about 18 months ago and it has proved very successful. The Order of the Eastern Star (OES) members in the Home really enjoy these functions and look forward to the next one. On the days they have these afternoon teas, they have sisters and brothers from other OES Chapters come in to interact with the members in the Home. Although some of the members in the aged care facility still attend their Chapter when they can, they like to have the opportunity to discuss events with the OES Chapter members attending so they can be brought up to date with recent events. In the picture are some of the sisters and brothers who attend and meet with the members residing at Masonic care.Ms Margaret Kennedy, President of the Freemasons’ Homes Auxiliary has given her thanks to all the people who come along and help in any way with these gatherings. The afternoon teas start at 2.00 p.m. and finish at about 4.00.p.m. She can be contacted by telephone at 3886 3303. She mentioned that the afternoon teas were held at Jessie’s Place, which is the Masonic Care Sandgate Canteen, and has recently called for volunteers to help in the canteen. It is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 12 noon except for Public Holidays. She also thanked the Board Secretary for assistance with photographs.

Stones Corner Masonic Centre was the venue for the installation of Mrs Kaylene Loadsman Jurisdictional Guardian and Mr Ian Milne Associate Jurisdictional Guardian of Jobs Daughters International (Queensland). The night started with a brief history of Kaylene’s Job’s Daughter life and her qualifications presented by Passed Grand Guardian Jill Heseltine, and Ian’s Masonic and Jobs Daughter history presented by Past Associate Grand Guardian Peter Donald. The ceremony was well supported with the attendance of the Grand Master MWBro Adrian Burton and his wife Regina (both being past members of Sunnybank Bethel), Grand Officers and representatives from many other Masonic related organisations, including De Molay as well as members and friends of Job’s Daughters. The installation was a very formal occasion, with Kaylene being installed by the immediate past Jurisdictional Guardian Mrs Donna Pankhurst, and Ian being installed by Jeff Harper the past Associate Jurisdictional Guardian of Queensland. Jurisdictional Guardians for Job’s Daughtersfrom the Daughters of Bethel 4 Sunnybank, (Kaylene and Ian both being Past Bethel Guardians of that Bethel) and musical items from Erin Maywald (Ian’s daughter) and Jade Loadsman (Kaylene’s daughter). Kaylene’s theme for her term is “ Laughter is the Music of your Soul – Motto; a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll”. Her Mascots are Penguins and the Phantom. She will also be raising money for Humour Foundation (Clown Doctors) and Australian Red Cross, which are her charities for the term.

Miss Bailey Millard, Honoured Queen of Bethel Moreton Bay UD has been declared winner of the Miss Queensland Job’s Daughter 2012/2013 title. The pageant was held at Stones Corner Masonic Centre in September. Miss Shannon Burns was the runner up.

The pageant this year attracted a large number of entrants from many bethels in Queensland, not only for the Miss Queensland Job’s Daughter title, but also the Junior Miss Queensland and Miss Charity titles.

The entrants for Miss Queensland were Shannon (Honoured Queen from Bethel 14 Wynnum), Natasha (Bethel 4 Sunnybank), Rachel (Senior Princess Bethel 2 Chermside), Jayde (Past Honoured Queen Bethel 2 Chermside) and Bailey (Honoured Queen Bethel Moreton Bay UD).

The Miss Queensland pageant is a full day competition for the entrants, having everything from a sit down written exam to formal interviews, uniform gown inspections, interactive skills and the all important final impromptu question chosen from one of three envelopes. The Junior Miss Queensland is very similar and the entrants were Bridgitte (Junior Princess from Bethel 2 Chermside), Josie (Junior Princess Bethel 4 Sunnybank), Rishanah (Marshal Bethel 2 Chermside), Rebecca (Chaplain Moreton Bay) and Holly (Junior Princess Bethel 23 Northern Brisbane).

The winner of Junior Miss Queensland Job’s Daughter was Miss Rishanah Heaps from Bethel 2 Chermside. The entrants for Miss Queensland Charity Job’s Daughter were Kirsten (Recorder Bethel 4 Sunnybank), Caeleigh-Maree (2nd Messenger Bethel 2 Chermside), Jade (Honoured Queen Bethel 4 Sunnybank) and Katelyn (Guide Bethel 23 Northern Brisbane). Miss Katelyn Ferris from Bethel 23 Northern Brisbane now holds the title of Miss Charity with all the entrants raising just over $9000 between them. The formal part of the evening was well attended by members, family and many supporters of Job’s Daughters, with several past Miss Queensland winners also present to take part in the ceremony and make the evening that extra bit special for the entrants. This year’s pageant has been one of the highlights of the term, with five Judges on the panel, and Mr Steven Jones the official photographer for the day. The event was extremely well organised and appreciation was given to all who were involved and supported the event.

There is now a new sign for the Leukaemia Foundation Queensland Freemasons Village at Townsville Hospital.

The previous sign which was built in stage one of the project was not satisfactory and was difficult to read at a reasonable distance. At times it could not be seen at all as it was blocked from view by trees and shrubs.

A project to raise funds for a more suitable sign was commenced by RWBro Vaughan Benn PAGM who was District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of North Queensland from 2000 to 2002 and others, so that it would be ready when Stage Two was completed for the official opening held two months ago.

Donations for the project were received from Queensland Masonic Touring Club Inc., North Queensland District Masonic Fete Committee and Townsville Charity Debutante Ball Committee together with another generous anonymous donor.The Board of Benevolence granted a Dollar for Dollar Subsidy towards the project and when finalised all donations were presented to the Queensland Leukaemia Foundation to go towards the new sign. It is now complete and erected on sight.

Alf Macdonald, of the Tully Tyson Masonic Lodge, has worked tirelessly with his regular raffles to raise funds for a new lawn mower for Tully State High school. This photo shows Alf, presenting a cheque for $4000 to acting Principal, Adrian Hooper and acting Deputy Kathy Macdonald. The $4000 includes a dollar for dollar subsidy provided by the Board of Benevolence. The grounds staff are very keen to get their hands on the new mower. Thanks to Alf, who has previously raised funds for the school that went to the construction of the Special Education kitchen in “A” block and other projects in the past. The Tully Tyson Masonic Lodge has been a long-time supporter of the schools in their cluster and their work is appreciated.

Mooloolah Lodge No 334 applied for, and was granted a Board of Benevolence dollar for dollar subsidy for a donation to the Sunshine Coast AGL Helicopter Rescue Service to purchase 1 Ferno stretcher at $1150.00 and 10 helmets $1800.

An additional donation of $600 for the purchase of two (2) miniature Hero 2 helmet cameras by the lodge resulted in a cheque for $3550 being presented at

the lodge Installation Banquet. The lodge decided not to apply for subsidy on the extra $600 presented.

Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service has recognised the donation made by Queensland Freemasons on their Sponsors and Supporters Wall at the entrance to their Sunshine Coast airport complex and in their Annual Report.

A presentation of two park benches was recently made to the Rockhampton Branch of the Queensland Cancer Council by Central Queensland Daylight Lodge No. 532 with the assistance of the Dollar for Dollar scheme from the Board of Benevolence.

These benches were presented for the convenience of cancer patients and their carers who stay at the units when in Rockhampton receiving treatment.

WorBro Lionel Birch, the recently installed Worshipful Master of Peninsula Daylight Lodge has performed his first charitable duty for his Masonic year by presenting representatives of the Redcliffe Special Needs Library Association Ltd. with $1000 for the purchase of new toys.

The library has been in operation for over a quarter of a century and was established on a voluntary basis to lend toys and resources to children and adults who have special needs such as physical, intellectual, slow learning speech or hearing disabilities.

The $1000 was made up of lodge funds

with additional support of the Dollar for Dollar subsidy from the Board of Benevolence.

The representatives receiving the donation on behalf of the library were Mesdames Kim Clancy and Annette Campbell. Kim spoke on the progress of the library and its aims in the future to the 50 ladies and brethren present at a luncheon which followed the lodge meeting.

The toy library is conveniently housed in its own little shop adjoining the Redcliffe Public Library in Oxley Avenue.

What was formerly known as the Past Grand Officers Association held its annual meeting at the end of August.During the meeting it was confirmed by all present that the name of the Association be changed by leaving out the word “Past”. In future it will now be known as the “Grand Officers Association Queensland”.

There were 29 members and one visitor present at the meeting including the Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master.The election of officers took place with the Grand Master chairing this portion of the meeting.

The following were elected to the various positions in the Association: Chairman, RWBro Doug Wells; deputy chairman, RWBro David Gray; secretary, RWBro Mervyn Gray; assistant secretary, WorBro Rodger Klopp; treasurer, RWBro Neil Jones; committee member residing 100km from Brisbane, VWBro John Lethbridge; committee member acting in the first year as an active Grand Officer, Bro Tony Anderson.

The newly elected chairman, RWBro Doug Wells was in Seattle USA on holidays at the time, but present at the meeting via a video connection from Seattle. He was visible on the screen and addressed those at the meeting on new projects, goals and the future direction of the association. He asked for the members support to achieve the goals and an increase in participation and membership. He also requested members to adopt projects in which they wanted to participate.

The long and short of itThis picture was taken prior to the Southport No 62 Installation in July this year.

The “long” one is WorBro Ted O’Neil, Immediate Past Master and the “short” one is WorBro Jim Forman, Master of the lodge.

At Calen Lodge No. 395 Installation WorBro Graham Townsend and his wife Coral presented a print of the initiation of Robert Burns as Poet-Laureate of the Canon Kilwinning Lodge Scotland in the year 1787 to Calen Lodge No 395 on the occasion of the Lodge Installation. It was in honour of Coral’s mother, “Harriett Annie”. Both Harriett and Robert Burns both shared the same birthday on January 25, two centuries apart, and Graham and Coral thought it a special gesture to present the appropriately framed print to Calen Lodge.

Bro. Townsend bought the print at the Grand Lodge Centre, Edinburgh Scotland in 2009. It is No 723 of 1000 prints that were sold in 2009 to celebrate Robbie Burns birth 250 years ago.

WorBro Bryan Williams, the Master of Continuity Lodge No 242, accompanied by lodge member Bruce Smith, presents a cheque for $1885.40 for the purchase of an electric recliner chair for patient comfort and ease of use, to Michelle Kinbacher and Elizabeth Vicary of the Biggenden Hospital Auxiliary.

The money was raised through a Continuity Masonic Lodge charity golf day, The Board of Benevolence provided a “dollar for dollar” subsidy towards the donation.

Friday the 13th (Not as Black as some may think!)

Queensland and the evening was a ‘sell-out” success.

“The Table Lodge is part of the heritage of our past” stated a Tullibardine brother, “It is a synopsis of Masonic principle, it strengthens our attachment for lodge and country. It increases our unity and fellowship and all this celebrated in the manner of yesteryear, how good is that?”.

The Tullibardine Table Lodge celebrated the “Ceremony of the Five Toasts” By these Five Toasts those present renewed their commitment, dedication and devotion to their particular lodge, and respect and toleration for their fellow man. Refinement, good manners, and friendliness were the order of the day and for a little while those present returned to the Masonic meeting format of an age long gone.

Every Table Lodge is themed differently, and the theme for the evening was “The Strings, Pipes and Vocals of Tullibardine” .

The evening was under the stewardship of VWBro John Howe and all entertainment was provided by members of the lodge and included brackets by the lodge pipers. Surely the skirl o’ the pipes must be one of the most distinctive sounds there is, a sound which lies very close to the heart of Scotland, and certainly close to the hearts of the brethren who attended.

Those present could not have listened to one note on the pipes at this event without their spine tingling and, before long, a glistening about the eyes, especially those born in auld Scotia, and for those of Scottish descent the sound surely initiated markedly similar feelings.

Wherever in the world the Scots may find themselves, the slightest hint of the pipes is the fastest route back home, enough to induce a longing for the mountains and glens of their childhood in those Scottish born.

Additional entertainment included the erudite WorBro Jack Canning. To the delight of all Jack not only recited his favourite poem about “Sandy McSporran”, and sang in duet and in trio, but proved to be a dark horse when he exhibited skills with the mouth-organ few brethren knew he possessed. He had everyone mesmerised.

Couple this with the wonderful vocal talents of Bro Graham McNeil, who enthralled the crowd with his vocal renditions of Scottish favourites and the brilliant musical talent and entrepreneurial skills of Bro. Gerard McLernon (who not only acted as a mainstay for the organisation of the harmony but brought his guitar to life as only a talented musician can do) and you have the makings of one terrific night.

All attending were indebted to the brethren from the William McLeod Lodge who undertook the role of “duty stewards” for the evening. Nere a glass stood empty, such was their diligence to their task.

During the ceremony of the Five Toasts the brethren enjoyed a hearty Aberdeen Angus roast (they assure us that this was Aberdeen Angus) meal, wie all the trimmins. Of course a dram or two of Scotland’s finest was the order of the day.

When it comes to the drinking of Scotch (the water o’ life) it is important to remember that it is more than extravagance, it is more than mere indulgence, it is a toast to evolution, a tribute to the durability to man’s ingenuity in using the resources of nature to create a wondrous beverage which will refresh the mind and body and allow man to enjoy to the full the senses with which he has been endowed.

“That’s our story and we’re sticking to it” was the comment.

If you were there...well you know all of this to be true...if you were not there..sorry!, you missed a great night.

One word of advice...Book early for next year as it will be Tullibardine’s Centenary Year and things will be bigger and better (if that is at all possible).


Jewel Presentations

Since our last edition VWBro. Clarrie Holmes of Warwick Lodge was presented with his 60-year jewel in his home at Caloundra by RWBro. Wally Lock PDGM.Due to Clarrie’s wife Margaret’s medical condition it has not been possible for Clarrie to attend lodge, and Warwick Lodge members were pleased when RWBro. Seventy five years in Freemasonry would seem an almost unobtainable achievement to most of us but this year one of the brethren of Peninsula Daylight Lodge attained that remarkable goal.

Bro Bert Brumby is one of life’s gentlemen, quiet, modest, generous and temperate, he is a man to look up to. At 98 years of age he has well and truly “been there and done that” as the modern day saying goes, but he needs no “T-shirt” to tell the story. In September 2012 Bro Bert was presented with a 75-year “Service to Freemasonry” jewel and certificate at the Sandgate Homes where he has been enjoying life for the past fourteen years. Close to 40 brethren and ladies were present in the lounge room of the McLuckie Wing to witness the presentation. The jewel was presented on behalf of the brethren of the lodge by the Worshipful Master, WorBro Lionel Birch, and the certificate was presented by Mrs Pat Pitcher on behalf of the ladies of the lodge. WorBro Birch gave a glowing history of Bro Brumby’s life which commenced in November, 1914. and commented that he was being presented with a rare Masonic jewel, 75 years of Service to Freemasonry, to add to the Military Medals he received for serving his country. Our picture shows Bro Bert Brumby with Mrs Pat Pitcher who presented him with the certificate.

Clarrie Holmes 60-year Jewel

VWBro Stanley Vincent Petherick PDGDC is pictured here with his wife Agnes and WorBro Brian Wheeler on the occasion of the presentation of a 70-year Service Pin to Stan, a long-serving member of Gatton Lodge No. 87. He was initiated in the lodge on August 7, 1942 as the 189th member. His occupation when he joined the lodge was that of a farmer. The pin presentation was made in the home of Stan and Agnes last August. Present at the meeting were Bros Fred Kleimeyer, Jim Pearson, Jonathan Rudduck and Brian Wheeler. The 60-year jewel and the 70-year pin have been sent away for the upgrade.

RWBro Percy Vernon William Alexander PSGW (Vern) was presented with his 60 year service jewel by RWBro Randall Borg PJGW, WM of Central Queensland Daylight Lodge No 532 in August. Vern was in the Mater Hospital awaiting a high care placement and until then was coping quite well in independent living accommodation.Vern’s commitment and dedication to Freemasonry is well known to Rockhampton and District Freemasons. He is an inspiration to them for his untiring efforts in promoting not only Craft Masonry but other Masonic Orders.

In September 2012, the committee for the proposed Central Queensland Museum of Freemasonry hosted a members’ forum to celebrate 150 years of Freemasonry in Rockhampton.

Freemasons from within the Rockhampton region, one from West Australia and one from South Australia attended.The Grand Master, MWBro Adrian Burton addressed the gathering on membership and the future of the Craft. He was assisted by RW Bro Greg Goding PAGM (Grand Superintendent of Workings and chairman of the membership committee). A question and answer segment held at the meeting was well received by the brethren.

At the end of this segment MWBro Burton and RWBro Goding were each presented with a book entitled “Rockhampton Freemasonry 150 years 1862 – 2012”. A luncheon was held with the Grand Master

Display boxes in hallways add artistic interest and variation, separating sections from one another and assisting residents with finding their way. The outdoor garden spaces have been designed to create interest and a source of sensory stimulation through use of colour, fragrance and texture. Karinga also provides a foundation for Masonic Care Queensland’s endeavours to be recognized as having centres of excellence in dementia care.

“This project reflects our strategic direction for Masonic Care Queensland to remain at the forefront of the provision of aged care services and continue to deserve its reputation as a service provider of choice and as an employer of choice,” said Mr Bruce Milner, Vice-President, Board of Benevolence and of Aged Masons, Windows and Orphans’ Fund.

Karinga aged care facility forms part of a major development of Masonic Care Queensland’s Kirwan site, which also includes contemporary retirement living apartments, and new community facilities such as café, hairdresser, chapel, library and landscaped gardens. Karinga is also complemented by the existing Acacia aged care facility and Corinthian Court Retirement Village which are located on the same site.

“The site provides residents with a continuum of care so that as their care needs change, they can be catered for within the same community,” said Mr Milner.

The District Grand Lodge of Carpentaria recently ran two workshops under the banner of “Ageing Positively”

One workshop was conducted in Cairns in the Minnie Street Temple, and the other in Atherton at the Atherton Masonic Centre.Both of these workshops were a great success with many comments and congratulations from the presenters and audience alike.

Addresses to the audience were given by the District Board of Benevolence, representatives from HACC, ACAT, VW Bro Spencer Christensen, a financial consultant who spoke on funding aged care, and WorBro Dr Bruce Herriot, a family GP.The welcome was given by RWBro Bob Wakely, District Grand Master.

VWBro Ian McKenzie’s address set the scene to these very worthwhile workshops.

The Deputy Grand Master, RWBro Dr Gary Bacon paid a visit recently to the oldest Tibrogargan Lodge No 305 Initiate.

He is RWBro Richard Edwin King PDGM and he is, as the DGM says, “a spry 99 years old”.

RWBro King was born on August 31, 1913 and was initiated into Tibrogargan Lodge on June 8, 1935. This shows that he has been a Mason for 77 years and the majority of his service is recorded in Aviation Lodge No 386 and Dunellan Lodge No 480.

A Visit to Tibrogargan Lodge’s Oldest

mind that is as sharp as a tack and he can recite ritual in a number of orders besides Craft Masonry.

“It was exciting for me and my dad (just a pup at 89) to hear of his reminisences, particularly of his early farm experiences in the Glasshouse Mountains--Beerburrum distirct, cycling competitions (he held the Brisbane--Toowoomba time record) and knowledge of the early members of Tibrogargan Lodge” said RWBro Bacon. He described it as being an uplifting experience to be in Bro Richard’s stimulating company.

Incidentally the DGM has been Secretary of Tibrogargan Lodge since 1994 and says he must be due for replacement !

Our two pictures show RWBro King with his bride and as he is today looking through the Tibrogargan Lodge Roll Book opened at his initiation date, June 8, 1935. He is member No 93 in the book.

At a recent meeting of Caboolture Lodge Mr. Keith Schulkins was Initiated into Freemasonry. The lodge now has three Entered Apprentices and two Fellowcrafts. In December the work for the meeting will be the initiation of a father and son and in February there will be an initiation of a candidate from Ireland and a candidate from Bournemouth UK. As well as all this, the lodge has also received two sets of papers which will shortly be processed.

Nine Entered Apprentices will no doubt be a record for membership in Caboolture Lodge No. 266

without any more applications. Lodge membership is nearing 70 Freemasons and if it continues it will not be long before they reach the highest membership in 94 years since its formation. Evergreen Secretary Jack Lowe says “the secret of success is complete lodge harmony, good work and hard work”.

A record field of 40 players lined up for the annual Duke of Leinster Lodge Golf Day held in September at Nudgee Golf Club. Last year there were 23 players and only 18 the year before..

Participants included three teams of four from Duke of Leinster Lodge, two teams from Dennistoun Lodge, the Deputy Grand Secretary Graham Schulz’s team, a team from Maroochydore Lodge, one from North Australian Lodge, Kianawah/Stanley Lodge (the previous winners) and another team from Kianawah Lodge. This made a total of 10 teams playing for some very nice trophies.

The competition was a four-person Ambrose event and resulted in two teams tying with a score of 33, (two under par for the nine holes).

A countback gave the trophies to the Kianawah Lodge team led by Bro Brenden. Mossop who was in the winning team last year.

Runners up were the Duke of Leinster Lodge No.1 team led by the organiser of the event, 83 year-old RWBro Stan Rawlings P.A.G.M.Nudgee Golf Club’s south course was in superb condition and presented plenty of water hazard challenges.

Refreshments and drinks were provided by the organisers of the event and the atmosphere was most friendly and genial in the well-appointed clubhouse surroundings.RWBro. Rawlings sincerely thanked those who supported the golf day resulting in record numbers participating. Everyone is now looking forward to the next Duke of Leinster event in 12 months time. Organisers are looking at a shotgun start to cater for those who missed out this year.

Catering at this year’s Rockhampton Eisteddfod has enabled the four Order of the Eastern Star Chapters in the region to donate $2,200.00 to Meals on Wheels.

In an operation coordinated by RW Bro Jim Large and his wife Claudia, Masonic Lodges and OES Chapters combined to provide catering at Rockhampton Eisteddfod. Over $4,000 was raised for charity. Rockhampton, Mount Morgan, Glenmore and Keppel Coast Chapters chose Meals on Wheels to receive their

share of the proceeds.

When making the presentation on behalf of the four Chapters, The Worthy District Grand Matron, Sister Jenni Lane said the donation acknowledged the essential service provided by Meals on Wheels. Joining Arthur McDonald in accepting the donation, Greg Jackson said that Meals on Wheels was hoping to build a new kitchen which was needed to meet the growing needs of the Rockhampton community

Recently several foundation and early day members of the Queensland Masonic Touring Club Inc gathered on the seafront at Margate Beach for a morning tea and the important presentation of a Golden Wedding Certificate to VWBro Charles Kemp AGSWks and wife, Glenys to celebrate their anniversary on April 21 this year.

Some years ago the club set out to recognise this blissful achievement by the introduction of a quality certificate which carried with it the congratulations and best wishes of all fellow members. VWBro Kemp, one of the co-founders in 2001, was also founding vice-president. He afterwards served as club secretary for a period of eight years and in that time, with support from Glenys, worked tirelessly in setting up the Club, steering its progress day by day and looking to ensure its image and acceptance with the wider community as well as within the Craft. Indeed, present day Club members owe a great deal of gratitude to VWBro Kemp and Glenys for the enjoyment and happiness they currently experience and along with presentation of this certificate join in wishing them both many future years of happy, healthy married life. The white T-shirt (with Masonic emblem) worn by members pictured is symbolic of the white lambskin apron, being a bond of friendship, and along with the white flag and pennant was especially chosen that it may convey this important Masonic principle.

When Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States he took his equally great Secretary of State Elihu Root to Oyster Bay for a short rest. Walking through the gardens, he turned and asked:--

“Elihu, how long is it since you have sat in the lodge?”

“Not for a long time Theodore,” replied the Secretary.

“Then let’s you and I go to lodge tonight. The gardener of my neighbour is the Master, and they say he is a good one.”

Mr. Root agreed, and that night, the humble gardener sat as Master while the President and Secretary of State of the United States sat as side-line members. Only in Masonry could this be done.
