Mind In The Making!
Mind in the Making is an 11-part learning process that uses
research on children’s development, including classic and
recent studies on how children learn and how teaching can
encourage engaged learning.
Overview Session for Center and Facility Director’s Wednesday – January 17th – 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
The overview session is mandatory for child care center/facility directors to attend before a staff person can attend
If a Director has attended in the past, they do not need to re-attend

Ages & Stages Overview - Infant Toddler to Pre-K - Child Growth & Dev. - Advanced Level -- Janice Barnett This training will provide participants with an overview of the Ages & Stages Questionnaires. Ages & Stages is a screening program designed to be completed by parents or caregivers to pinpoint developmental progress in children between the ages of one month to 5 1/2 years. Participants will practice scoring and interpreting the tool. Handouts will be given as well as strategies for success. This training is geared toward teachers, directors, family providers and parents.
Autastic! Autism Awareness - Observation & Assessment; Environment & Curriculum - Intermediate Level Sydney Cheesebrough Welcome to Autastic! Autism Awareness training developed for Infant/Toddler and Preschool providers. This training offers a large inventory of information about the most current research on Autistic Spectrum Disorder, strategies and tips for working with a child diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, local resources available, history, statistics and more!
The Art of Childhood - Environment & Curriculum - Advanced Level -- Amy Morrow This training will explore various ideas to offer children art, music and dramatic play in ways that are fun and engaging for the child while supporting their learning and development. This training is available to all provid-ers who work with Preschool Age Children.
Being a Good Role Model - HSN , Child Growth & Dev., Environment & Curriculum - Basic Level Renee Stonebraker This training focuses on how adult’s words and actions can affect children’s health habits, including personal hygiene, food choices and physical activity.
Childcare Emergency Preparedness - Family and Community Relationships - Basic Level - Missy Anderson Participants will learn techniques on how to be prepared for natural disasters and emergency situations
Circle Time Activities - Child Growth and Development - Basic Level - Missy Anderson Circle time provides opportunities for children to develop listening skills, a time for auditory memory, a time for sensory experiences and a time to get to know each other. This training provides activities and hands-on experiences to introduce into your classrooms
Communicable Diseases - HSN - Basic Level - Addy Morris Communicable diseases are common in child care settings. This training will provide information about how to recognize and treat common childhood infectious disease. This includes information about symptom recognition and guidelines for exclusion.
Cultural Connections in Child Care Today - Family & Community Relationships - Intermediate Level - Chris Gillis This training will discuss the importance of connecting with young children by learning who they are and how to develop a deeper understanding of their attitudes, values and beliefs.
Does That Make Sense? Understanding Sensory Processing in Children - Child Growth and Development - Intermediate Level -- Linda Reeves This hands-on training looks at how all areas of child development are impacted by information that is processed through the sensory systems - seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching and moving. This workshop will provide fun and meaningful sensory integration activities that are a necessary part of development for every child, whether they have a sensory processing disorder or not. Participants will learn how to develop a sensory rich environment for children or all ages.
Indoor Outdoor Safety - HSN - Environment and Curriculum - Basic Level -- Renee Stonebraker This training reviews common injuries for children, including falls and poisonings, preventive measures to reduce the risk of injury, and playground safety.
Training Topics Offered January - March
ITERS - Importance and Value in the Classroom - Envir. & Curriculum- Intermediate Level -- Janice Barnett The Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale-Revised is designed to assess group programs for children from Birth to 2 1/2 years of age. This training will provide an overview of the ITERS and allow participants the opportunity to practice observing and rating infant/toddler classroom environments. Each participant will be provided an ITERS-R workbook. The training is geared to center directors and infant/toddler teachers.
Let’s Move - HSN - Child Growth & Development - Basic Level -- Renee Stonebraker This training discusses physical activity requirements for child care centers, age appropriate physical activities and causes and prevention of childhood obesity.
Mandated Reporter: Reporting and Preventing Child Abuse & Neglect-HSN-Basic Level -- Addy Morris This training is the approved course for child care providers in recognizing, reporting and preventing child abuse and neglect. This includes understanding the role of the mandated reporter, recognizing warning signs of child abuse and neglect and increasing protective factors for families and communities.
Medication Administration - HSN - Intermediate Level -- Addy Morris This is the training that is required that allows child care providers to administer medications to children in the child care setting. Topics include state regulation requirements, best practices and special situations. The participant must complete requirements of the training in order to be able to administer medications.
No Bad Kids - Education About Biting Behaviors - HSN - Basic Level - Sydney Cheesebrough A beginners look into the function of children’s biting behaviors; there are no bad kids and there are no “biters”, just children with behaviors that require additional support. Learn about the stages of development and their relation to biting behaviors, functions of biting behaviors and ideas for working with children with biting behaviors.
Picky Eaters - HSN - Child Growth & Dev. - Environment & Curriculum - Basic Level -- Renee Stonebraker This training discuss how to encourage children to eat a variety of foods, including different cooking methods, family style meals, and food shapes.
Room Arrangement as a Teaching Strategy - Environment & Curriculum - Basic Level -- Missy Anderson By making a few changes in the classroom environment, teachers can help overcome behavior challenges and make their jobs easier and more rewarding.
Shaken Baby Syndrome - HSN -- Basic Level -- Chrissy Pownell This training will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about Shaken Baby Syndrome. What is Shaken Baby Syndrome? Why does it happen? What are some of the effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome? We will explore these questions and more.
Unique Needs of Children in Emergencies - HSN -- Intermediate Level -- Chris Gillis This training will focus on children’s common reactions to crisis and best practices to facilitate their short and long term emotional recovery. We will also identify types of stress, coping techniques and local support systems and resources for caregivers.
WV Early Learning Standards Framework for Infants and Toddlers - Child Growth & Development - Basic Level Chrissy Pownell This training will provide an opportunity for participants to explore the West Virginia Early Learning Standards Framework for Infants and Toddlers (WV ELSF IT): its purpose, content, application, and benefits for professionals, programs, parents and children.

Beginning Wednesday - January 17 , 2018 - 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Child Care Resource Center - 2000 Main Street - Wheeling
WV Family Child Care Modules are a total of 9 to 10 consecutive weeks (including TA visits) each of the 7 modules are 4 hours
in length and the TA visits are 1 hour. They are designed for registered family child care providers and will focus on specific
needs that must be addressed, such as mixed age groups, organizing the home, record keeping, etc. Participants will learn
how to implement the Creative Curriculum & evaluate their environmental using the Family Child Care Environmental Rating
Scale. Participants will receive 30 hours of WV STARS training credit.
MODULE DESCRIPTIONS & DATES
Building a Firm Foundation – Wednesday - January 17th
Participants will learn about the importance of using quality curriculum and how to evaluate the family child care
environment. Each participant will learn how to develop a professional portfolio and will have the opportunity to build that
portfolio throughout the course.
Knowing How Children Learn- Wednesday - January 24th
This module will provide participants an overview of how children develop and learn from birth through three years. Activities
will be used to engage participants in learning developmental milestones and to learn about what to expect during these
years.
Organizing your Day- Wednesday - January 31st
The purpose of this module is to help family child care providers create a developmentally appropriate program that meets
the need of all children in the program. It will show participants how to organize and prepare their home and develop and
plan their weeks.
What Children Are Learning (Part 1)- Wednesday - February 21st
This module will discuss what kinds of experiences to offer children at each stage of development. It will specifically look at
positive approaches to learning, language and literacy skills, mathematical relationships and exploring science.
What Children Are Learning (Part 2)- Wednesday - February 28th
This module will specifically look at positive approaches to learning social studies and creative arts. Integrating learning with
studies will also be discussed.
Caring & Teaching- Wednesday - March 7th
This session will build upon prior modules and will present sound strategies for building relationships with children and
families and guiding children’s learning and behavior. Social/emotional development strategies will be covered along with
ways to foster strong positive guidance.
Building a Partnership with Families- Wednesday - March 21st
The purpose of this module is to present practical ideas to help family child care providers build and improve strong
partnerships with families.
