Cayucos and Templeton Parades

We had two groups of Cuesta Crankers attending local parades and celebrations. Our south county members attending the Cayucos parade were Jerry & Sherri Kaml, Donn & Irene McKnight, Bob & Angie Phillips, and Hugh & Florence Pope. North county members attending the Templeton Parade were Darrell & LaDonna Nash, Pete Peterson and Bob Wyatt. Paul Lindbergh drove his recently completed Model T Speedster with the local “T” club group. After the parades, several members drove their cars to Sculpterra Winery for a Independence Day Celebration.

The Prez Sez . . .

I hope everyone is having a delightful summer cruising the back roads of the Central Coast. It truly is the most fun when it’s just you and your “honey,” that is unless you need the group with you. Whatever your choice, I hope you’re having a good time.

Thanks for the terrific response at our last meeting regarding our programs. It’s so nice to see the enthusiasm and it should prove to be helpful to next years VP. With that in mind, start thinking about running for office and express your desire to Ron Matty, if you haven’t already. The success of any club and the direction the club takes is due to its officers. If want a say in the clubs progression, your voice can only be heard by letting a “member-at large” know your thoughts or become an active board member.

I just saw the pics posted online of the Ag Cruise Night and Car Show. Sal Orlando has done another fantastic job capturing the Cuesta Crankers doing what they do best; eating and showing off their cars. Looks like everyone had fun!

We have reserved 29 seats for the Oceano Melodrama to see Sheer-Luck Holmes on October 6th at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $20.00 each and payment must be made to the club by September 10th. Dinner will follow, but the place has not

Beverly’s Sunshine Report The Ayers family is in the spotlight this month. Polly recently had foot surgery at U.C. Stanford Medical Center. Doug was attacked by a coffee table one night on his way from the bedroom to the kitchen. He has a bum shoulder and he won’t be able to arm wrestle anyone for a month or so.

Snappy Jumper Dress By Mary Carlson

We all know that the women of the Model A era mostly wore dresses or a variation of a skirt and blouse or skirt and sweater. But, we know that they also had ‘jumpers’. According to the March 1931 issue of Needlecraft magazine, we see that a pattern was available for the home sewer to make a jumper dress. The magazine suggested that this could be made of woolen, silk or cotton fabrics. It noted that this jumper was appropriate for the youthful figure, as it was designed for ages 14 to 20 and for 36 to 40 inch bust measurements.

A visit the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum on our way south. We will be staying at the Petersen Inn and attend the PCPA Theater musical “Legally Blond”. On Wednesday morning a tour to the Hans Duus Blacksmith shop. Of course Shopping in Solvang and a visit to the Chumash Casino is always on the “things to do” schedule. Depart: 9:30 am. A new Idea on Adjusting Brakes by Dick Wyckoff, Editor

My wife’s Cabriolet was having a little problem on our last outing. Nothing big, but a concern. The car is a three year old restoration with mostly restored everything and has always had good brakes. I kept them adjusted the usual way by jacking up each wheel and tightening the adjustment until there is a slight drag, back it off one click or more and move on. For some reason, I ended up with out of balance breaking. A slight pull to the left, a little harder on the pedal. Just not quite right. Then I had a bright Idea. I have one of those IR temp guns used to read the temperature of things like the radiator, the transmission, the exhaust, etc. I took the car out and drove it around the block, stopped to the side of the road and “shot” the temperature of the brake drums. This would be my base line of information. What I found was that my adjustments were off a click or two. How did I know this? One of the front drums was 40 degrees warmer than the rest. Mind you, this was without any hard braking. I backed it off one click and started up again. This time I rode the brakes kinda hard for about a block. One foot on the gas and one on the brake. I pulled over and “shot” the temperature of the drums again. I found one of the rears was 75 degrees cooler than the other and one of the fronts was about 60 degrees hotter. I tighten up the cool one and backed off the hot one. I repeated this once after several minutes and made minor adjustments. Already the brakes were much better. After just a couple adjustment trips around the block, the brakes have never been better. The pedal is near the top, and the car stops with ease. This may be one good way to test how your brakes are adjusted. Give it a try. I was surprised how easy it was and how nice the brakes are now.

Ethanol-laced Gasoline The following contains excerpts from the Marine Engine Digest, reprinted in the Sierra A’s Fresno MAFCA July 2012 newsletter.

Ethanol-laced gasoline is notable for causing problems. E-10 is a U.S. government-mandated blend of 10 percent alcohol and 90 percent gasoline. The simple fact is that ethanol, or grain alcohol, is both a solvent and hygroscopic. As a solvent, it dissolves gum, varnish and rust that is built up in the fuel system. If the engine is not run for a period of time, the gum tends to solidify in the carburetor causing a restriction in the fuel flow. Ethanol is hydroscopic which means it pulls water out of the atmosphere. Alcohol loves water; the higher the humidity, the greater the volume of water drawn into the fuel. This alcohol/water mixture becomes suspended in the gas reducing engine performance. When just four teaspoons of water per gallon (0.5%) contaminate the gasoline, the solution separates into two distinct layers; Gasoline floats on the top and the water saturated alcohol sinks to the bottom. Since the fuel for the Model A is drawn from the bottom of the tank, water contamination becomes a more serious problem. There is yet another problem with E-10. Its shelf life is about six weeks to 90 days before it begins to decompose. If you don’t plan to run your engine for awhile or you run it infrequently, you might consider stabilizing the fuel with an E-10 specific stabilizer. A good choice is the new Sta-Bill Ethanol Treatment specially formulated for E-10. The

CRUST: Melt margarine. Add powdered sugar and flour. Press in pizza plan. Bake at 350 deg until light golden brown.

FILLING: Beat creamed cheese and sugar. Spread on top of crust.

TOPPING: Prepare Strawberry Glaze, using 1 3/4 cups water. Let cool. Add strawberries or peaches and put on top of filling. Place in refrigerator until ready to serve.
