Bellvista Blvd, Roadworks With the school year commenced,

there is an increase in traffic along Bellvista Boulevard; however Stockland is seeking to reduce impacts by ensuring both lanes are open at all times, and only working outside of the existing road corridor during peak times. Stockland are also instructing their contractors not to use Bellvista Boulevard and play their part in reducing heavy vehicle traffic.

If you are experiencing delays, access to your destination via the Bells Creek Arterial remains an option. The construction program is progressing well, and Stockland still expect to complete the works by May 2018.

Motorists are asked to monitor the speed carefully through the roadworks and adhere to the 40kph limit. This limit is for the benefit of all and keeping to the limit ensures all can use the road safely.

Residents who live off Bellcarra Drive are experiencing difficulties when they exit onto Bellvista Blvd via the temporary roundabout. All motorists should follow the rules afforded to drivers entering a roundabout and should be prepared to give way as required by the law.

This area on Bellvista Blvd doesn’t look like a roundabout but BeCA reminds all motorists the roundabout remains there and drivers should drive accordingly.

Helicopter Company To Quit The Coast

In January 2014 Becker Helicopters of Maroochydore Airport set out to target Bellvista and its residents in a tactic designed to put pressure on Council so it would bend to the Company’s wishes. All tactics undertaken by Becker helicopters over this period were within CASA guidelines. For a long period of time, Becker had been seeking a Satellite Helicopter Training Facility for its use.

BeCA also strongly supported the creation of such a facility.

Becker Helicopters carried out numerous and frequent repetitive helicopter circuits in this area over a period lasting for up to five or 6 weeks, designed to stir public opinion and force Sunshine Coast Airport and Council to have a site allocated. As a result Bellvista residents were subjected to repetitive circuits by large helicopters for up to 4 to 5 hours daily during December 2013, January and February 2014.

Use the Blog “Archive Link” from the BeCA website and you can follow the story as it unfolded between December 2013 and March 2014.

A quote from a BeCA blog post covering a large Public Meeting conducted by local MP Mark McArdle in February 2014 appears below:

“A letter from Mike Becker was read by Mark McArdle to all present. Sections of the letter confirmed that Becker Helicopters had legally and deliberately set out to spark debate by impacting upon local communities. The pain and discomfort inflicted upon our community was a deliberate tactic designed to spark public debate so Becker Helicopters could achieve their aim of creating a satellite helicopter training facility.”

A full copy of the letter read to the Public Meeting can be found on the BeCA

website in the “Helicopter Company to Quit the Coast” entry dated February 2nd.

In another quote from a national magazine, Mike Becker’s wife was interviewed and said:

“To grow you have to be prepared to bend the red tape”. The full article is available in a link on the February 2nd 2018 website post

Over many years BeCA has maintained its pressure on Sunshine Coast Airport Management via “Caloundra Airport Forum Meetings” to ensure the events of January 2014 did not repeat themselves.

Roadworks continue on Bellvista Blvd. New pedestrian crossing points have been installed at the Bellvista Blvd/Dumbarton Drive roundabout which now provide a ‘safety zone’ for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the busy road. This has created a much safer road crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The pathway along the northern edge of Bells Reach requires a savage pruning. Cyclists and pedestrians need to show extra care when using these pathways.

BeCA has referred the situation to Council but as this area is now under the control of Council Contractors and not by Council Employees, it may take a little longer to get the way properly cleared. BeCA wishes to maintain pressure on Council to ensure there is an adequate level of maintenance despite Bells Reach being covered by Council Contractors.

Caloundra West Lions now have a brand new BBQ trailer so expect to see them at local events plying their trade.

Final steps are in place for the Lions to take on full management and responsibility of the Community Garden in Active Park, Bells Reach.

Influences on Dwelling Size in Australia

From Anna McKinlay (USC): As part of a PhD study, I am studying

the contemporary housing form and how it relates to the Australian life style.

If you live in Bells Reach, Arbour or Baringa areas, we are interested in finding out about your home.

We would like to discuss why you decided on this home and how your family use the rooms and spaces of your property. It involves you taking photos of some aspects of your home and a 1 hour discussion with a friendly member of our research team.

If you are interested, please contact Anna McKinlay on 0417 272 241

Cyclist and Pedestrians Beware. Back in late May 2017 BeCA, reported

on its website of the need for cyclists to be aware of the gutter used to separate the veloway from adjoining footpaths. (See photo above right). This method of pathway separation mainly occurs in Baringa around the new school. At that time in late May 2017, BeCA mentioned that several cyclists had experienced nasty spills when they inadvertently clipped the safety gutter causing them to tumble off. Regretfully these spills continue to occur with one older residents suffering nasty bumps, cuts and scratches from his recent fall.

At the time, BeCA suggested to Stockland that these gutters could be painted a brighter color to further alert cyclists that they are there. Stockland is again considering painting the gutter in a ‘hi-vis’ color following on from BeCA’s recent concerns. We are hopeful that the request will be granted and the gutter will

be made more visible for those using the veloway. Website Jan 11

More New Parks For Baringa

Stockland has announced yet another new park to be named ‘Frog Park’ for the Baringa Estate. By the time you read this article, Frog Park should be available for the public use. The new park is situated in Banks Crescent. At the traffic lights as you enter Baringa, turn left. Banks Crescent is then the first street to the left.

Frog Park is aimed at young families. and will be a more intimate space for local families, incorporating play equipment most suited to little members of the family. The great location next to Lamerough Creek conservation area will make Frog Park the perfect spot to enjoy a family picnic or some quiet time in the sun reading a good book and relaxing.

We can expect more new and exciting parks and sporting facilities in Baringa to come online as the 2018 progresses.

New sporting fields have been opened beside Baringa State School.

Repairs to Bellvista Lakes Pump Timer

One of the BeCA Management Committee Members noticed the water

level was falling in the Bellvista lakes. The lakes are fed by pump from an underground bore. This pump had only recently been replaced.

The concern was investigated by Council and it was discovered the pump’s timer wasn’t operating. The timer has since been replaced and the water level is now back to normal again. Website Jan 20

Fire Safety Issue Resolved

Council has reconsidered its current grass cutting policy regarding the long grass separating homes in Bellvista and the neighbouring Jill Chamberlain Bushland Reserve. This area is cut several times throughout the year on a pre arranged timetable. The timetable does not take into consideration sudden outburst of wet weather and a resultant spurt in growth.

BeCA suggested that following the fires late in 2017, Council should review and update this timetable. Following a further request from BeCA and an inspection by our Councillor, the timetable for grass cutting has now been reviewed and the number of cuts per year and level of maintenance have been increased markedly.
