Move over Regina George – there’s a new mean girl in town, and her name is Rebecca Martinson. This past week, the former Delta Gamma sorority sister relinquished her letters back to the sisterhood after her vulgaritylaced email reached viral proportions on the Youtube. Her email is just another testament to the perils of Internet fame, as her reputation is damaged from her word choices in her criticism of fellow sorority sisters. Not convinced that the recipi

ents of Martinson’s email are still recovering from the aggressive prose? The letter contained over 40 fbombs and 30 other swear words, not to mention that Rebecca Martinson got particularly personal with the members of University of Maryland’s Delta Gamma chapter. Tabloids have since regarded her as the ‘Deranged Sorority Girl’, ‘Psycho Barbie’, and the increasingly popular ‘Rabid Sorority Sister’. What started out as a

plea for her fellow sisters to becime more social turned into a full!"#$"#%&'()*+)","-*%./0%1"+-$%*//%“boring” and “awkward” at evening events with fraternities. It’s not that far into Martinson’s email when she states, “I’ve been getting texts on texts about people LITER

striking feature of this email is the exsorority president vouching to physically injure the next sorority sister that showed any sign of antisocial behavior during Greek Week (especially if Sigma Nu happened to be around). As she unloaded her thoughts in the email, Martinson goes on to say, “I will f****** c*** punt the next person I hear doing something like that, and I don’t give a f*** if you SOR me, I WILL FUCKING ASSAULT YOU.” The Delta Gamma chapter

has acknowledged this email as an abuse of power, and has since “accepted the resignation of one of its members [Rebecca Martinson] for the tone and content of the email as highly inappropriate and unacceptable by any standard.” Delta Gamma’s Facebook page also added that “this email should not be depicted in any way as standard or 0/6*+-"7% /0% *+"#% */% (-5% /.4&+(8% )/rority vice... for the young woman who wrote it, we can only express our regret and concerns for landing notoriety in this manner.”

Kennedy comes to Potsdam for Keynote Speech During the Academic Fes

tival in April, Kathleen KennedyTownsend spoke at two events, during which students and the community of Potsdam could ask questions and speak to her during a reception. Eric Martell and Erin

Barr, treasurer and vice president of the History Association, worked hard to bring KennedyTownsend here. The two stated how eager they were to meet her: “We were in a dreamlike state when we realized she was coming, that we did it,” said Barr, “I never met someone that important, it was surreal.” “She wasn’t imposing

or Godlike, she was extremely friendly,” Martell said. “She was welldressed though…Eric and I want to make runs in politics one day. If we can be one iota as genuine and passionate in politics as she is, then we will do well.” Barr stated. The two escorted her to

a panel that featured Jane La Tour and two women from the Women and Gender’s department, before ")&/0*+-$%'"0%*/%*'"%4-(8"%"2"-*%/.%

when she was talking about the letter her father wrote to her the day John Kennedy was assassinated, and I had heard the story before but to hear it from her was remarkable and that above all made the night moving,” Martell said. The night ended with

Kennedy answering questions and taking photos before the numerous thanks of Martell and Barr. They both agreed it was a lowkey ending. “It absolutely does bring a

smile to my face,” Martell shared, “It wasn’t until the next morning that it sunk in that I met Bobby Kennedy’s daughter – a women of her stature – so attuned with the Kennedy legacy.” “This event proves that

student organizations made up of inspired amateurs can do important things and make a difference,” Barr stated with a smile. Martell and Barr will con

tinue working with the History Association and stated that they have great plans in the works for next year.

Student Entertainment Service’s yearly Springfest has come and gone, with many students still yearning for a major headliner. Springfests of the past have featured such acts as Steven Lynch, Michael Ian Black, Joe Budden, and Streetlight Manifesto, most of which were chosen from student polls. After a failed deal with Clarkson to combine budgets and bring in a bigger act, SES elected to focus on a carnival and a week of smaller, local events. SES’s vice president James Nachamkin said, “Big events in the past have been good, but some have not recouped the money put in.” Not money well spent,

said Nachamkin. SES opted to have a carnival be the main event, spending 10,000 dollars less on this year’s Springfest, with the leftover money being used to hold small events throughout the semester and Springfest week. Last year SES spent 30,000 dollars on music, and with other costs, spent a total of about 50,000 dollars for Springfest. This year SES spent less than 5,000 dollars on local musical acts with a total of 40,000 dollars being spent altogether. SES stated that spending 40,000 dollars for 30 hours of smaller acts compared to 50,000 dollars for two hours of entertainment with a major headliner is a better use of the money. SES’s vice president

James Nachamkin explained the circumstances that contributed to Springfest this year. “We were going to do a thing

with Clarkson, but bands were too expensive, not available, or didn’t want to come. We will work with Clarkson and Canton next year, but its all up to the students… if we don’t know what the students want we can’t adequately serve them. We do many polls a year [to gauge what

students want],” said Nachamkin. Nachamkin went on to say that SES did one general poll at the beginning of Springfest’s planning, and that having a carnival or a headliner were tied in student preference. “They were tied and with

avenues closed we decided to focus on the carnival,” said Nachamkin. The itinerary for the

carnival bands initially included popular local band Wild Adriatic. However, the band was ultimately absent from Springfest. SES’s vice president James Nachamkin elaborated, “34 weeks ago they contacted SES. They said they couldn’t make Springfest… they had another engagement.” Nachamkin stated that all musicians have it in their contract that they can bow out of a show between a week and a month ahead of time, depending on the band. “They came up March 15th, all ready to play Springfest… [then] 34 weeks ago they contacted SES.”Wild Adriatic procured a differ

ent story.” We got communications months ago asking for our availability and pricing. We sent them an answer. [two weeks before Springfest] we got an email asking us to do the gig,” said Mateo Vosganian, who plays the drums in the band. “We would have loved to come,

we want to maintain positive vibes with Potsdam. We love the town and SES. Potsdam feels like our second or third home. If kids are bummed about the music, come to Hurley’s. When we played there were only 75 people there. Another EFF% &/68#% '(2"% 4*% +-*/% ;608"5:)G%We wanted to come, sometimes it doesn’t happen. We tried to make it work.” Following up with SES’s

Wild Adriatic, they said they had email correspondents from SES on April 12, roughly two weeks before Spiringfest. Ultimately, it seems miscommunications between parties lead to this band not being booked. Nachamkin explained

how SES would go about getting a band. “First, you would want to choose

too late to contact a band, Nachamkin said “Technically today, [Friday, a day before carnival], it would be a hell of a lot of work. Contracts have loopholes we can get around.”Knowles Stock held a similar

carnivallike event the day after Springfest’s carnival. Knowles Stock featured 3 local bands compared to Springfest’s twelve, and offered free food, free tie dye tshirts, and lots of games. Both Knowles Stock and Springfest were staffed by volunteers. Knowles Stock went on for 4 ½ hours compared to the Springfest carnival’s 9 hours. While Knowles Stock cost 1800 dollars, the Springfest carnival cost 30,000 dollars. Many students felt that having

a major headliner was essential to making Springfest great. Zack Slocum, a junior, said, “I think the biggest complaint I’ve heard is the lack of big events compared to last year. Personally, it’s a week of trying to bring liveliness to the campus. To be big, last year we had [Barrington drive] blocked off. That’s what I expect. For the money it’s worth it.” Another senior student who

wishes to remain anonymous shared her disgruntlement. “It pales in comparison to past years. There is no big headliner. In other classes I’ve heard this general complaint. [I

was] excited for senior year to be a big todo. There was lots of hype for no names.” Of the students interviewed

many agreed with these sentiments, including Potsdam students Sara and Natasha. “I don’t know, I don’t think they

have enough. It’s a little dry, not very much going on. Not very appealing,” Sara said. Natasha disagreed. “I like the

variety, the tattoos, virgin coladas. H6)+&% #"4-+*"85% -""#)%,/0"% 2(0+ety. “Austin Petrashune, a senior,

said “[He’s] underwhelmed. I was expecting some sort of really big name. I support the concept of regional names, but early in the year lots of big names were being thrown around.”“I was pretty busy with end of the

semester work and I don’t think it was very well advertised. Without a headliner it just didn’t seem like as big of a deal as in years past.” Said David Wood, a senior. Gen i e l Young, a junior, thought that there were too few supplies to go around. “They had a very limited amount of products. It didn’t feel like they had enough for a campus of over 3,000 students.”Of the 7 interviews collected on

carnival day, two were positive. “I think it’s a great way to bring the campus together to celebrate the ending of the semester,” student Katie Tidball said. After the carnival took

place, it was clear there was a difference in opinion amongst students dependant on their year. Seniors or juniors tended to prefer previous Springfests, while freshmen or transfers had a better opinion of the festivities. Of the 28 interviews, 13 were negative, 5 positive, and 10 didn’t go or know it was going on. Biology Professor and music

buff Dr. Conley said, ”[if] bigger bands were going, I’d go, but for smaller bands I didn’t go.”

“I really wasn’t impressed,” said senior Rob Velte. “The Carnival atmosphere kinda had the same stuff as Welcome Weekend. The music wasn’t impressive. A Capella group after A Capella, I don’t care for the A Capella. I don’t know of anyone on campus who does, who isn’t in A Capella. I didn’t see 40,000 dollars worth of stuff.” Heather Crapo, a senior in the

biology club, said “I liked the free stuff, but the bands sucked. Not that they sucked, but we see those local bands every day. But I really liked the free stuff.” Eric Hanss, a transfer stu

dent, said ”I thought it was great, I saw one band in the evening with a full horn section, and they were +-&0"#+18"G%I**0(&*+/-)% J"0"% $//#7%as were the smoothies.” Summer Kelly, a freshman, said,

“ It was very fun, I had a great time seeing different kinds of music. I was able to appreciate being outside with good food and music.” Her friend Dae Michele agreed.

”Everything was chilled out. Good food and I loved the stuffed animals. Overall, a good time.”

“What’s your count now?” came Natalie’s voice above the crowd.“We’re at nine. Stay to

PACES WASHER 101OVER SOAPED: You only need a ! cup of detergent.- no matter what the size of the cap- ONLY use ! cup (or 2 tablespoons). The use of liquid fabric softener will cut down on the over soaping issue- you clothes will still be getting clean. The problem is SUDS.If the washer detects SUDS, in the "nal rinse cycle it will: stop at 9 minutes go through rinse cycles- up to 4 cycles at 11+ minutes each- could take as long as 45 minutes! Shut down and #ash SELECT CYCLE while the timer shows 9 minutes You’ll need to wait 5 minutes then reselect your cycle so the washer can "nish

UNDER or OVER LOADED: The machine needs to be loaded so that your hand can pass in the top of the tub without going through clothes, but has to have more than a pair of jeans and some socks in it. The problem is an UNBALANCED LOADIf the washer is UNBALANCED, it will stop at 4 minutes then will go into a FINAL SPIN, to try and shift the load- this can take up to 20 minutes! the machine will stop at 4 minutes and the door will lock for 5 minutes your clothes will be wet You’ll need to shift the load or remove clothes to "nish the cycle

Common user mistakes may cause the washing machines to shut down but they are really easy to avoid. If you do experience a technical issue, call 1-800-MAC-GRAY (800-622-4729) or go online and report the problem. A technican will come service the machine- this may take up to 3 days. The washer will no longer run for these reasons, doors to the machines will lock. If you try and force the door, it bends and won’t work in the future.

WATER PRESSURE: lots of people taking showers and doing laundry at once! The problem is LOW WATER PRESSUREIf the washer has LOW WATER PRESSURE, it will stop at 36-38 minutes and then the SELECT CYCLE light will #ash. You’ll need to reselect your cycle to continue.
