Banjo and Rooster Help with the GardenThe Adventures of Rooster and Banjo

The boys got their little buckets and ran to the garden beside Aunt Nana’s house. Just then, a car drove up. It was the girls, along with their Mama and their big sisters. The children hadn’t seen one another for a long time, so greetings took a few minutes. Then everyone headed to the garden. Aunt Nana showed everyone where the beans were waiting. She had a bad back, so she didn’t help pick beans. She visited with her nieces, showed the pickers how to tell if the beans were ready, and made sure Banjo and Rooster behaved. She also reminded everyone to stay off the nearby area where Uncle Tractor had planted vegetables that weren’t showing yet.

“Well, Uncle Tractor picked some corn earlier,” Aunt Nana said. “I need to shuck and silk it for supper. Do you want to help?”

“My friends, too,” Rooster insisted. “I love Sunshine and Daffodil.”

The boys were very excited. Their friends Daffodil and Sunshine were coming to Aunt Nana’s house to pick green beans. “Any day I get to play with my friends is a good day,” Banjo declared.

The children had a great time. They helped pick for a while, and then they helped Aunt Nana bring a small plastic slide over to the edge of the garden. While the others picked beans, the four children took turns sliding. Soon, the ladies had overowing buckets of beans. The girls’ Mama wanted to get the beans ready to can that day, so they didn’t get to stay long. When their friends had left, Rooster and Banjo looked at Aunt Nana. “What can we do now?” Banjo asked.

The boys had never had such an important job. They ran to the front porch where the bucket of corn awaited them. “What do we do?” Rooster asked. “I’ll cut the ends off with this very sharp knife,” Aunt Nana told them. She showed them the knife. They knew they weren’t allowed to use it. She cut the ends of the ears of corn off, being careful to leave most of the shucks she would normally have peeled off all at once. “Now you boys can pull off all these green things. They’re called shucks.”

Soon, it was time to take some of the corn to Maw, the boys’ great-grandmother. The rest was cooked for supper at Aunt Nana’s house. And when Rooster and Banjo got a taste of cooked corn on the cob dripping with butter, they were glad they had waited for Aunt Nana to cook it.

The boys took off one piece at the time until Aunt Nana showed them how to grab most of the shucks at once. After that, it went faster. When they nished shucking, she showed them how to rub the ears with their hands to get most of the silk off. They thought the hair-like strands were funny. Banjo decided he wanted to eat supper straight from the cob, but Aunt Nana told him to wait until it was cooked. She wasn’t sure if his Mama would like for him to eat it raw.

Banjo and Rooster Help with the GardenThe Adventures of Rooster and Banjo

The boys got their little buckets and ran to the garden beside Aunt Nana’s house. Just then, a car drove up. It was the girls, along with their Mama and their big sisters. The children hadn’t seen one another for a long time, so greetings took a few minutes. Then everyone headed to the garden. Aunt Nana showed everyone where the beans were waiting. She had a bad back, so she didn’t help pick beans. She visited with her nieces, showed the pickers how to tell if the beans were ready, and made sure Banjo and Rooster behaved. She also reminded everyone to stay off the nearby area where Uncle Tractor had planted vegetables that weren’t showing yet.

“Well, Uncle Tractor picked some corn earlier,” Aunt Nana said. “I need to shuck and silk it for supper. Do you want to help?”

“My friends, too,” Rooster insisted. “I love Sunshine and Daffodil.”

The boys were very excited. Their friends Daffodil and Sunshine were coming to Aunt Nana’s house to pick green beans. “Any day I get to play with my friends is a good day,” Banjo declared.

The children had a great time. They helped pick for a while, and then they helped Aunt Nana bring a small plastic slide over to the edge of the garden. While the others picked beans, the four children took turns sliding. Soon, the ladies had overowing buckets of beans. The girls’ Mama wanted to get the beans ready to can that day, so they didn’t get to stay long. When their friends had left, Rooster and Banjo looked at Aunt Nana. “What can we do now?” Banjo asked.

The boys had never had such an important job. They ran to the front porch where the bucket of corn awaited them. “What do we do?” Rooster asked. “I’ll cut the ends off with this very sharp knife,” Aunt Nana told them. She showed them the knife. They knew they weren’t allowed to use it. She cut the ends of the ears of corn off, being careful to leave most of the shucks she would normally have peeled off all at once. “Now you boys can pull off all these green things. They’re called shucks.”

Soon, it was time to take some of the corn to Maw, the boys’ great-grandmother. The rest was cooked for supper at Aunt Nana’s house. And when Rooster and Banjo got a taste of cooked corn on the cob dripping with butter, they were glad they had waited for Aunt Nana to cook it.

The boys took off one piece at the time until Aunt Nana showed them how to grab most of the shucks at once. After that, it went faster. When they nished shucking, she showed them how to rub the ears with their hands to get most of the silk off. They thought the hair-like strands were funny. Banjo decided he wanted to eat supper straight from the cob, but Aunt Nana told him to wait until it was cooked. She wasn’t sure if his Mama would like for him to eat it raw.
