Cateche cal Sunday - September 20, 2020
This year, the Church will celebrate Cateche cal Sunday on September 20, 2020 by o ering a Day of Prayer. The 2020 theme is I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you. On September 20th we invite members of our parishes to pray as a community for those that the Holy Spirit will call forth to serve as catechists in our forma on ministries. Cateche cal Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to re ect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Bap sm, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Cateche cal Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

DDYNAMIC PARISH UPDATE: Let’s make Ordinary Time EXTRAORDINARY! Did you know that we are in the period of the Liturgical Calendar called “Ordinary Time”? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops explains this me as follows: “Ordinary Time is divided into two sec ons (one span of 4-8 weeks a er Christmas Time and another las ng about six months a er Easter Time), wherein the faithful consider the fullness of Jesus' teachings and works among his people. The mystery of Christ, unfolded through the cycle of the year, calls us to live his mystery in our own lives. This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the saints, celebrated by the Church throughout the year. There is no tension between the mystery of Christ and the celebra on of the saints, but rather a marvelous harmony. The Blessed Virgin Mary is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son, and the feasts of all the saints proclaim the wonderful works of Christ in his servants and o er the faithful ng examples for their imita on.” As we all strive to live to our poten al and grow closer in rela onship to Christ, the Dynamic Parish team is o ering some exci ng ac vi es, available to us from Dynamic Parish. FFrom the Pastor: Parish Update
Two years ago, when I became Administrator of St. Athanasius and St. Agnes Parishes I realized that to be er serve the parishioners, the two parish sta s would have to begin working together. With this understanding, the aim would be consolida ng both parishes’ o ces into the St. Athanasius Parish O ce loca on. Over a year ago, we moved the St. Agnes O ce to the St. Athanasius Parish O ce. Following the move, I met with the St. Athanasius Building Commi ee to discuss ways in which to make the o ce more accessible because the walkway is a steep climb and there are several steps going into the building. The ideas included an elevator, a chair li , a driveway and parking spaces near the front door with a ramp to the door, using the PAC or buying a portable Classroom. We soon discovered that most of these ideas were cost prohibi ve and any possible changes would involve the town Building Inspector who would nd the inside of the building totally out of Code.
A er a year of trying hard to make the St. Athanasius Parish O ce the center of our Reading Catholic Community, it has become apparent that access would con nue to hinder the pastoral ministry of the Collabora ve. Because of its loca on and its di cult accessibility, especially for the elderly, it is not a place where Parishioners just drop in to see one of the priests, talk with sta members, get a Mass Card, schedule a Memorial Mass or just to say hello……….
A er much prayer and re ec on, as well as several discussions with our Sta and Parish Council and speaking with pastors from other Collabora ves, it is with a hope lled heart that I inform you that I have decided to move the Collabora ve O ce to the St. Agnes Parish O ces. This decision enable us to be er serve one another and Christ. The sta of the collabora ve made the move this past week. I realize that it may be di cult for our St. Athanasius parishioners to accept. However, I rmly believe that the move to St. Agnes Parish O ces will truly provide be er access for all members of our Reading Catholic Community and it will allow all of us to more easily become the best version of ourselves. An added bonus to this move is that Fr. Erikson has moved from Bainbridge Road to the St. Athanasius Parish O ce which is once again, the rectory.
The Ini a ve for Pallia ve Care and Advanced Care Planning in collabora on with the Sanc ty of Life Ministry of the Reading Catholic Community invites you to view and discuss a video series from the Suppor ve Care Coali on, a na onal Catholic group that promotes pallia ve care. The video series covers
the Catholic Church’s approach to and teaching about pallia ve care and the issues facing the seriously ill and dying and their families. The online video presenta ons and discussions will be o ered on four separate Monday evenings and will begin at 7:30 PM with each session las ng an hour to an hour and a half. You will need to register for each evening separately. Sign up for all or just the topic(s) you are interested in. Registra on links are:

The Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents serves the spiritual needs of parents whose children of any age have died by any cause. As Jesus joined his distraught disciples on the road to Emmaus, we ask him to join each of us in this ministry as we struggle through this horrendous journey of grief every day. In the Franciscan tradi on of “All Are Welcome,” please join us.
The Emmaus Ministry responded to our "new normal" in April by o ering a series of Mid-Week Gatherings on Zoom, with a Spiritual Re ec on and the opportunity for ques ons. This format was highly successful and deeply appreciated by the over 200 parents who a ended. We encountered a number of newly-bereaved parents from all over the country who expressed their deep gra tude for the program because it provided them with some hope, par cularly during these di cult mes.
In addi on, we con nue to o er Half-Hour Emmaus Ministry Remote Retreats via email each Saturday morning, with parents par cipa ng together in solidarity--or whenever convenient at their own pace. Again, the response from parents has been heartwarming. Many parents, some of whom have never even been to a physical Emmaus Ministry retreat, tell us that the Saturday morning retreats are the highlight of their week.
We con nue to o er Emmaus Virtual Retreats un l we can be together physically again.
Live Virtual 4-Hour Retreat Informa on: h ps://www.emfgp.org/fall-2020-virtual-4-hour-emmaus-ministry-retreats/
Half-Hour Remote Retreat and Re ec on: Please join us every Saturday morning at 9:30am EDT. Together we will pray for each other, our children, and the world. If you are unable to join us at that
me, you can certainly pray the retreat at your convenience. If you are not already on our distribu on list, please send your email address to [email protected] so you can receive the Remote Retreat Guide each week. h ps://www.emfgp.org/events/categories/remote-retreats/
Sheila, our h grade teacher’s 8-year old daughter, wanted a puppy and she was begging at every opportunity and promising to take care of it. Knowing full well it would end up being her responsibility, the teacher made arrangements with her brother to dog-sit for a week while he was on vaca on. The rst few days went pre y well, but by the fourth day ‘doggy fa gue’ was se ng in. It seems that the young dog enthusiast failed to account for mul ple daily walks, feedings, bathing, play me and ‘cleaning up’. At the end of the week, Sheila informed her mom that she had changed her mind and would prefer a gold sh instead.
Faith is a commitment to a way of life, not just a set of intellectual beliefs. More than just accep ng the idea that Jesus is the Savior, faith means that we con nue to forgive so that we live by God’s standards, even when it is demanding, inconvenient or di cult. Forgiveness and reconcilia on are the basis of the Chris an life and if we compromise them, we compromise our life, both temporal and eternal.
We live our faith when we follow the teaching and example of Jesus, when we reach out to those who have hurt us and o er forgiveness over and over and over. We have the Church, the sacraments and the example of the saints—all of which are part of our community of faith that strengthens and supports our bap smal commitment to follow the Lord. There can be no ‘faith fa gue’. Our God sets the example; our faith is renewed and strengthened when we put it into prac ce.

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build
strong support systems for all of us. In addition to
their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish
social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first
responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in
response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide
comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.
Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the
Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to
keeping our priests healthy.
This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission
by giving to the special collection at Masses on
September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is
a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just
observe need in our communities; they seek it out so
they can respond.

Donate now online at clergytrust.org or scan the QR code to give with Venmo, Apple/Google Pay, and PayPal via Givebutter.
