• Balance risks and rewards: Weigh how muchtime and energy you should invest in variousprojects and be open to changing the mixdepending on the work market and yourincome needs.

• Negotiate: Negotiating a contract isn’tabout displaying bravado. It’s about knowingyour power relationship with the client. Getinformed by learning your industry’s dealnorms, the market’s needs and your marketvalue. Not happy with where you stand? Gettraining, find markets with bigger budgets orgain more experiences until you can berewarded with higher pay.

• Get a life: Employees get vacation time, sickleave, family leave, bereavement days andpersonal days. Those policies exist largelybecause workers advocated for them. Whoadvocates for you? Without a 9-5 schedule,it’s easy to forget you have a life outside ofyour work. Be sure to schedule breaks andvacations and budget for time off.
