Almoner’s Report: Gordon Stuart was welcomed back. Good wishes were extended to Jim Howell and Lance Hogan. Secretary’s Report: Committee meeting 9 October. Suggestions sought for 2017 programme. Volunteer needed as Entertainment Organiser. Rebus NZ Inc Chronicles (Sep) on notice board – automatic voting right for presidents from Apr 2017. President’s Report: Thanks to those members who helped at the 3 Oct Combined Meeting. Next year’s Committee (March 2017 AGM) – start thinking of nominees. Outings: Wed 19 October to PNCC Water Treatment Plant. Wed 9 November to Cross Hills Gardens. Trip: Wed 23 November to Wanganui, cruise on river boat. List open. Cost to be finalised. Thanks from Milton Pedley to Keith & Sue Eckworth, organisers of the trip to Govt House & WWI Ex. Club Speaker Marie Good was born in Levin. Her Oxfordshire-born father was a salesman and travelled a lot throughout the lower North Island. Marie’s mother worked in Kirkcaldie & Stain’s store in Wellington. She was an excellent seamstress. The family moved to Koputaroa during the Depression. Marie remembers the WWII trenches in the garden. Marie attended Koputaroa School and Horowhenua College. She got a job with a Levin legal firm and biked 6 miles to work. Then, in 1960, she married Alister and they had three sons and a daughter. They led a farming life in Bunnythorpe, Rata and at several locations in Taranaki. Marie joined the WDFF. She took on office management and teacher-aide work in schools over a period of 25 years in Taranaki, Rongotea and Foxton where she joined the Foxton Probus Club. Moving to Palmerston North, Marie is a part-time teacher aide at Terrace End School. She enjoys gardening, knitting and making pickles. Guest Speaker Russell Tether is a Committee member of Rebus NZ Inc. He outlined its pledges to affiliated clubs. Russell entertained us with stories about his recent trip to England and Eire. He gave an account of the history of Sevenoaks in Kent, a village in which the Archbishop of Canterbury established his residence at Knole in the 11 th C. Sevenoaks today has a population of about 25,000. Russell attended a meeting of the men-only Sevenoaks Probus Club which has 450 members. Protocol is formal. Meetings are held in a pub with drinks before a meal, then a speaker. Club walks are encouraged (no wives or dogs, so as to avoid problems in the inns!). Russell visited Leeds Castle for an outdoor performance by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which featured the Spitfire Overture and a WWII Spitfire aircraft fly-over. And I don’t have acne. Life is great.
