Community InformationThe Office of Parks, Recreation and Community Affairs offers recreational, social and cultural opportunities for residents through camps, programs, events, park reservations, historic tours, publications and performing arts.

Office Hours and LocationDepartment office hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We are located on the first floor of Town Hall at One Town Hall Plaza, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

REFUND POLICYIf a participant wishes to withdraw from a program prior to the program’s start, the request must be made in writing a minimum of 10 days before the start of the program. There will be NO refunds after this time. There will be a $10 non-refundable charge on all refunded registrations.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONIf a program does not have a sufficient number of participants registered, the program may be cancelled by the Parks & Recreation Department. A full refund will be mailed to the customer.

INSURANCEThe Town of Clifton Park maintains a standard liability insurance policy that does not cover medical costs for anyone injured during the normal course of participation in any Parks & Recreation program or facility. All persons participate at their own risk.

RETURNED CHECKSA $15.00 fee will be assessed for all checks returned for insufficient funds. Returned checks cannot be re-deposited.

WAITING LISTIf your desired program is filled, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list. The department will make every effort to accomodate those on the waiting list. If any openings become available, we will then go to the waiting list to fill the class. Programs require advance planning so please register early.

Clifton Park Paper Shredding DaySunday, October 3, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

PROTECT YOUR CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION! The Town and its specialized partner, 3N Document Destruction, will be at Clifton Park Center parking lot between Boscov’s and the Saratoga County Department of Motor Vehicles with onsite shredding from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 3, 2021. This is a free drive-thru service. Please bring a donation of non-perishables for local food pantries. Limited to 4 huge bags or boxes of papers. Please, no junk mail, binders, plastic carriers or folders, or metal spiral books. All paper will be shredded on site and then recycled. This free service is provided to Town of Clifton Park residents only. Drivers are asked to have their identification available.

Is your dog registered with the Town Hall?NYS requires all dogs four months of age or older must be licensed in the municipality in which they are harbored. Dog licenses are issued at the Town Clerk’s Office, located in Town Hall, at which time proof of rabies vaccination is required and proof if spayed or neutered.

Did you know there are TWO DOG PARKS in Clifton Park?

The Mary Jane Row Dog Park located on Ray Road and Kinns Road Park located on Kinns Road. A dog park permit can be obtained in the Town Clerk’s office, located in Town Hall. Proof of current rabies vaccination and a NYS Dog License are required. An annual $30.00 fee, per household, allows dogs to be off-leash at both parks. The parks are a wonderful place to take your dog for exercise, playing and socialization.

Awesome Autumn Bicycle Ride

Saturday, October 9, 2021

Our Autumn bicycle ride will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Historic Grooms Tavern, 290 Sugar Hill Road. Join us as we ride along the Erie Canal towpath from Clute’s Dry Dock to the Lock 7 Dam. There will be 8 informational stops along the way. Ride is approximately 13 miles, mostly level. Ride will be led by Town Historian John Scherer. Helmets are required for all riders.

Columbus Day, discover America Learn to Skate!! Columbus discovered America while your child can discover the joy of being on the ice and learning how to skate! Wear your favorite red, white, and blue. The camp will be a fun exciting experience to learn on and off ice skills to start your journey of becoming a figure skater or hockey player! Activities include warm up, skate fitting, on ice training and cool down exercises. Please bring a lunch, drink and snacks if desired. Vending machines available.

Things That Go Bump in the Night: Survivor EditionJoin us for a family-friendly Autumn evening, complete with a guided nature walk under the evening sky. At interactive stations you will learn about native animals that are true survivors, able to endure tough conditions and the test of time. Experience the great outdoors on mowed trails through meadow and woods while enjoying one of Clifton Park’s beautiful open spaces!Date: Saturday, October 16 Time: 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Site: Veterans Memorial Park, MacElroy Road. Meet at pavilion. Fee: Free, pre-registration is required.Sponsored by: Town of Clifton Park Open Space, Trails & Riverfront Committee and the Town of Clifton Park.

Safety Day(Grades 2-5)

Kids want to have fun, but parents know that safety has to come first! This program brings in professionals to teach your elementary-age child the importance of behaving responsibly. Topics include, but are not limited to: basic first aid tips, what to do when a stranger comes to the door, answering the telephone, internet safety and how to react during a variety of miscellaneous emergencies such as power outages and fires. Kids will meet first responders, participate in safety-related crafts and games, and make their own first-aid kit. Please bring a lunch, water bottle and snacks.

Winter Pottery Adventure(Grades 1-5)

Date: December 10 Site: Locust Lane Clubhouse

Session 1: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Fee: $58 Welcome winter with an assortment of fun crafts and pottery projects. Young artists will enjoy designing their own animal mug, snowflake dish and memo board/plaque. They’ll use a variety of techniques and washable, non-toxic glazes to make their designs on these functional and food-safe works of art. Session 2: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Fee: $38 Get set for the holiday season with these fun crafts and pottery projects. Young artists will enjoy designing their own snowman utensil holder and a winter-themed photo frame. They’ll use a variety of techniques and washable, non-toxic glazes to make their designs on these functional and food-safe works of art.

Instructor: Arts & Glass staffPottery will be glazed and fired after the program and ready for pick up one week later. The studio is located at 19 Clifton Country Road in Clifton Park, a few doors down from Hannaford.

Join us during our free Family Moonlight Cross Country Ski! These evening will be held at either the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve or Garnsey Park (depending on snow conditions) on the above dates when snow conditions permit. Everyone is invited to participate and must bring their own ski equipment. A limited number of headlamps will be available.

There will be a warm-up fire and the Shenendehowa Nordic Club will provide hot drinks and marshmallows during the event. Participants will meet at the Preserve’s main parking lot on Riverview Road (at the Whipple Bridge) at 7:00 pm.

The Town of Clifton Park, in cooperation with the Shenendehowa Nordic Club, announces its Beginner Cross Country Ski Lessons’ program.

Classes are offered as snow conditions allow from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm on the above dates at the Clifton Park Senior Community Center. All ages and families are welcome. Pre-registration is required. Class fee is $12 per person per session. Bring your own cross country skis.

18th Annual Mohawk Towpath Byway DuathlonThis event is being held at Riverview Orchards, 660 Riverview Road in Rexford, NY on Sunday, October 17 at 8:30 am. The events are 2 mile run / 17 mile bike / 2 mile run to the finish and is a USAT sanctioned event. Scholastic and Grandmaster Classes now open.

Registration is now open.

Each year the Mohawk Towpath Byway Duathlon attracts top regional multi-sport athletes, as well as recreational runners and bikers. The start, exchange area, and finish are all at Riverview Orchards and the courses are through rural Fall foliage-lined landscapes along the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway. There will be an event cloth-ing item with a Byway logo for the first 100 registered participants. All participants and volunteers receive a meal post race feed.

Boys Winter Recreation Basketball(Grades 2 - 12)

Teams will play on Saturdays from November 6 - Late March

Must live in the Shenendehowa School District or Town of Clifton Park and not be playing on a “grades 8 & younger” travel team, to be eligible to play. Some first graders may be accepted as well. Registration begins September 13th online, mail or drop off form at Town Hall. Space is limited and it is filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register as early as possible. Registration is $95 up to grade 9, $130 for grades 10-12.

Boys Winter Travel Basketball(Grades 9 - 12)

The high school travel tryouts will be held at Shenendehowa High School East New Gym on November 14th. Registration forms will be available for pick up starting September 13th. You must pre-register to attend the tryout. Please send all registrations to Frank Massa at [email protected] or contact him at 518-877-6258. You may also drop off forms at Town Hall. Please plan on attending the tryouts on both days to be considered for a team. The League fee of $290 will be due upon selection of a team.Tryout times will be as follows on November 14th:9th and 10th Grades 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm 11th & 12th Grade 7:30 pm - 9:30 pmA second tryout date will be on a weeknight during the same week.

Girls Winter Recreation Basketball(Grades 2 - 12)

The travel program will be holding tryouts this year on the weekend of September 25 - September 26 at Koda Middle School. The registration fee is $325. Parent & Me Trail Stomping Nature Education Programs

Kelsi Clark, Program FacilitatorCome explore Clifton Park’s Open Spaces! A nice morning out for young children and parents/caregivers who are looking to get outdoors this Fall. Each hike will last approximately one hour and will incorporate a nature-education theme. Most of the walks will be “jogging-stroller friendly” but a child backpack or front carrier is recommended, dependent upon the age of the child participants. Please dress appropriately for trail conditions. Parent/adult participation required.

Muddy Tots(Ages 2 - 5)

This program will provide a unique opportunity for young children to engage in learning through outdoor autumn play at beautiful Veteran’s Memorial Park & Mooney Carrese Forest. Parents/caregivers support children in exploring the natural surroundings through various book themes, natural building methods, and outdoor living skills. Creativity and movement are a requirement. Hands will get dirty, clothes will get muddy and all participants will have an opportunity to soak up nature in our own backyard. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions. Go Kids is the Capital Region’s only multi-sport and exercise program specifically designed for children aged 2-5. Go Kids’ sports and fitness activities teach preschoolers the fundamentals of 7 different sports in a social, team-based, non-competitive environment. Fall Lacrosse ProgramsPage 10

Coaches Gary Weiss and Chad Finck of Capitalland Lacrosse will be offering boys and girls fall lacrosse which will take place on Clifton Common, which is located at 16 Clifton Commons Blvd., Clifton Park. This program gives the beginner players an introduction to lacrosse and gives the novice and advanced players a chance to work on their skills while being introduced to more advanced techniques. All of our boys’ and girls’ coaches will use the same skills, drills and live scrimmages that they have used to mold numerous all-league and all-American players. For more information, visit: www.capitallandlacrosse.comEquipment: Available to rent at the beginning of each program for a small fee. A security deposit is required. All players need a mouth piece which we will have available for $5 if one is needed. The co-ed learn-to-play group only needs a stick. All boys’ programs will need a stick, helmet, gloves, arm and shoulder pads. All girls’ programs will need a stick and goggles.

Clifton Park Girls Field Hockey (Grades K - 11)Sept. 15 - Oct. 13 (Wednesdays) and Sept. 19 - Oct. 24 (Sundays) (Excluding Oct. 10)

The Capitalland Field Hockey Club is offering a number of fall field hockey programs which will take place on Clifton Common, which is located at 16 Clifton Commons Blvd., Clifton Park. Our professional staff includes some of the finest female coaches in the area. During each program players will be assigned to groups based on their age and skill level. Younger advanced players can play up a level. Every player will be given quality instruction that fits the player’s level of experience. Programs includes individual skill work, offensive/defensive tactics & techniques, team concepts, goalie skills, as well as, full field scrimmaging & recommendations. Equipment: All girls will need a stick, goggles and shin guards. We will have equipment available to rent on site for a fee. A security deposit is required that will be given back when the equipment is returned. All players need a mouth piece which we will have available for $5 if one is needed. Bad Weather: If weather conditions are threatening, please contact 518-527-1340 or 518-527-6110 one hour before play is to begin to see if hockey is on.

Players will be split into different skill and age divisions within each program. Advanced Grades 7 - 9: has varsity level coaches recreate a set of advanced-level practices full of skills & drills that advanced players need to be successful at the next level. By following clues listed in the Passport to Nature discovery booklet, you can seek out the hidden letterboxes while learning about nature in your own backyard!Letterboxes are located at: 4 locations within Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve PLUS: Garnsey Park, Hayes Nature Park, Kinns Road Park, Mohawk Landing, and Veterans Memorial Park. Ask for our Passport to Nature Discovery Booklet to begin your journey. When you find the letterbox, you can use the rubber stamp contained within the box to stamp your passport. Don’t forget to record observations you make along the way in the discovery booklet. Once you have all nine stamps in your passport discovery booklet, bring it to the Parks & Rec Office to receive a commemorative pin!

Friday, September 10 at 7:00 pm - Stories and Memories of Clifton Park’s Past. Town Historian John Scherer will present a powerpoint presentation that will include excerpts from his new book, More Bits of Clifton Park History. Hear about the wife who murdered her husband, the headless rooster that lived for three months without a head, and other interesting tales.

Saturday & Sunday, September 18 (9:00 am - 4:00 pm) & 19 (12:00 pm - 3:00 pm) - Farm Fest Tag Sale. The Friends of Historic Grooms Tavern will be holding their famous Tag Sale at the Tavern during the Town’s Farm Fest. As an added attraction, a quilt exhibit will be held through October 1. The quilt display will feature nineteenth century quilts, coverlets and samplers from the Town History Collection. These were all made by Clifton Park residents and range in date from 1819 to 1906.

Saturday & Sunday, September 25 & 26 (12:00 pm - 5:00 pm) – Small Museum and Historical Society Day. Sponsored by the Saratoga County History Center. Historic Grooms Tavern will be open to the public for tours led by volunteers from the Friends of Historic Grooms Tavern and will feature a quilt exhibit.

Friday, October 1 at 7:00 pm – This Old House: How to Determine the Age and History of a Building. Presentation and discussion led by Town Historian John Scherer. Following this presentation, Paul Szczesny of the Clifton Park Historic Preservation Commission will provide a demonstration of the new digital interactive map of Clifton Park historic structures. Friends of Historic Grooms Tavern will also be holding their annual meeting.

Saturday, October 9 at 1:00 pm - Autumn Bike Ride. Town Historian John Scherer leads a bike ride which begins at the Historic Grooms Tavern. The leisurely ride will follow along the Erie Canal towpath from Clute’s Dry Dock to the Lock 7 Dam. There will be 8 informational stops along the way. Riders must have helmets. Distance is about 13 miles, mostly level. The Autumn Bike Ride is co-sponsored by the Mohawk Towpath Byway.

Sunday, November 7 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm - Book Launch for “Saratoga County Stories.” Join the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum for this local book launch held at Historic Grooms Tavern. Town Historian John Scherer is one of the authors featured in this book, which includes 60 articles previously released by the Saratoga County History Roundtable. Books will be available for sale and authors will be present for book signings.

Friday, December 3 at 7:00 pm - Toastmasters and Public Speaking. Speaker Gurinder Garcha DTM has been involved with Toastmasters for more than 15 years. He will talk about Toastmasters International, educating audience about what Toastmasters can do for members of the community in obtaining leadership, communication, and public speaking skills. Please join us to explore the best way to communicate with others and understanding the art of public speaking.

Clifton Park Action Park Clifton Park’s skate park is located off of Clifton Country Road. This is an unstaffed park open seasonally, weather dependent.

RULES:• Park users use the park at their own risk of being injured. The Town of Clifton Park will not be liable for injuries.• The Town of Clifton Park is not responsible for personal property brought to the park.• Rough play, abusive behavior, obscene language, and obscene graphics on equipment or clothing will not be tolerated and may be grounds for removal from the park.• All equipment is to be used per manufacturer’s specifications. Skaters must wear shirts, shoes and helmets. Inline skaters must also wear wrist guards.• Only one person at a time is allowed to skate on a ramp.• The park will not be open when the equipment, apparatus, and/or pavement is wet or icy. • Skaters are to use only the equipment that is appropriate for their skill level.• Report visible hazards or repair needs to the Town Buildings and Grounds Department at 518-371-6651.• Only skateboard, scooters and inline skates are permitted. All other uses are prohibited which include BMX, Razor Scooters, heelies, snake boards, wave boards, or any other type of rideable items.• All equipment used by park users must be in good condition and not damage the park or its structures. • Recklessness will not be tolerated. All skaters must use this facility responsibly to avoid injury to themselves or others. The use of proper skater etiquette is expected at all times.• No skating or trespassing is permitted when the skate park is closed. The Town of Clifton Park welcomes all golfers to the Barney Road Golf Course. Built in 1966, this 9-hole Executive par 3 course features 1,331 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 28. The course rating is 32.5 and has a slope rating of 90. Our short layout will reward good shots and provide a fun golf outing for everyone. This course has sloping greens and tree-lined fairways. A practice putting green is located on site.

The Barney Road Golf Course is open 7 days a week and will end the season mid-November, weather permitting. The course will open at 8:00 am daily and close at varying times throughout the season. In cases of overnight frost, heavy rainstorms, etc., alternative hours or closings may be posted at the course. To avoid damaging the course, please adhere to the hours posted. Intro to Fly Tying(Ages 13 and up)

Fly Tying and Fly Fishing is enduring and enchanting. It is a hobby that will bring a deeper appreciation of the great outdoors and desire to keep our environment as good as or even better than our Forefathers left it for us! In this 8-session class, you will learn flys to tie such as: streamers, nymphs, wets, drys, terrestrials, caddis, leaches and deer hair flys. The first session covers tying materials, tools needed, safety and hands-on instruction on tying the knots used in fly tying. Students must have their own tying tools by the second class. By the end of session 8, each student should have all the skills needed to embarkon a life-long hobby of fly tying in addition to the 70 flys tied during the class.All students will receive several instructional handouts and enough materials to tie 70 flys. YogaThis traditional Hatha yoga class is suitable for all levels and experience. It provides a stress-free, intimidation-free work-out to stretch and strengthen the body gradually while building awareness of the breath and the body. Traditional poses are practiced at a slower pace with attention to alignment, embodiment and detail. Every session will include breath techniques (pranayama), physical poses (asana), rest (savasana) and stillness/meditation. The only requirement is the ability to safely get to and get up from the floor.

Located off of Vischer Ferry Road, this 81-acre park offers baseball, softball, and soccer fields. There are also outdoor basketball courts, a playground area, an outdoor stage and 2 indoor skating arenas. The Clifton Park Senior Community Center is also located in the Clifton Common.

William K. Collins, Jr. Park527 Moe Road, Clifton Park

Located near the intersection with NYS Route 146, this park provides a ball field*, playground, nature trail, picnic areas, volleyball net, pavilion* and “open space” areas for a variety of sporting activities and family gatherings. Reservations may be made by calling the Office of Parks, Recreation and Community Affairs.

Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve Pierce Road, Clifton Park

This 250-acre nature preserve area has a wide range of wetlands and woodlands and the confluence of 3 streams. Fishing trail access on north side of Dwaas Kill. Rugged, uneven terrain for hikers.

Garnsey Park1481 NYS Route 146, Rexford

A beautiful 151 acre parkland with hills, meadows and wetlands, can be explored via a nature trail through meadows and woods. Small unpaved parking lot is near the trailhead kiosk.

Kinns Road Park624 Kinns Road, Clifton Park

Located on Kinns Road, this park provides nature and cross- country ski trails. There is also a picnic area. The park’s trails extend south across a stream to the Sherwood Forest neighborhood.

Mary Jane Row Dog Park30 Ray Road, Rexford

Dedicated dog run area located within view of Vischer Ferry Road, to be used with permit only. This park is open from dawn to dusk. Permits are available at the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall.

Mohawk Landing640 Riverview Road, Rexford

The six-acre nature preserve is located adjacent to Riverview Orchards. This park contains nature trails, a scenic river overlook, small picnic area, kayak/canoe access to the Mohawk River, and streams.

North Woods Nature PreserveEntrance between 38 & 40 Shadow Wood Way,

Ballston LakeThis 80-acre woodlands is the former Village of Round Lake reservoir, with stream and pond, and offers nature trails for hiking, snowshoeing and wildlife enjoyment.

Veterans Memorial Park at Elks Trail697 MacElroy Road, Ballston Lake

Located on MacElroy Road, this 141-acre park provides softball fields*, a pavilion*, and informal walking paths. Beautiful wetlands behind ballpark. A new hiking trail extends to the Mooney Carrese Forest.

Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic PreserveRiverview Road & Van Vranken Road, Rexford

Located adjacent to the Mohawk River, this 600+-acre preserve offers hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, and bird-viewing opportunities. The towpath trail along the historic Erie Canal extends from the end of Ferry Drive to the Whipple Bridge and beyond, and includes newly restored views of Historic Double Lock 19.
