Jesus announced He was quite impressed with the centurions tremendous faith and promptly healed the centurions servant without going to meet him. In His famed address, Jesus taught us, His disciples, to go the second mile in our service. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two(Matthew 5:41). We can never bring honour to Him whose name we profess to wear when we cut corners and see just how little we can do to get by. Skimpy on service is not like Jesus, the Christ. - Tim Childs

Going the Extra Mile In our modern age of principally engaging in selfish interests, Christians must not neglect to revisit the theme pertaining to “the spirit of Christ” and adopt it on a greater scale. Have many of us forgotten what Jesus Christ is all about? Have we allowed what is most important in the kingdom of heaven to lapse from our memories (cf. 1 Peter 4:1-2)? Examining the life of our Lord during his public ministry, we observe the life of a Man who loved to serve and bless His fellowman. Jesus did not come to be petted, pampered and waited upon. He did not come to amass an impressive treasury. However, the “Son of man” did come “to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Jesus cared and contin-ues to care about the well-being of people (just like you and me), not the least of which is the fulfilling of man’s spiritual needs. Are you and I following in His steps? Reflect a moment upon a given day when Jesus, the pre-eminent spiritual leader of God’s peo-ple, entered the small town of Capernaum on the northern coast of the Sea of Galilee. There He was approached by a centurion who pleaded with Him on behalf of a personal servant who “…lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented” (Matthew 8:6). In Jesus’ typical spirit of willingness to go out of his way to bless, He kindly assured the officer: “I will come and heal him.” You and I may not grasp the extent to which Jesus was offering to put Himself out, but appar-ently the military commander thought it was too great a sacrifice on Jesus’ part. The Roman centurion had both faith and insight to understand Jesus’ authority and power, and essentially insisted that Jesus not go to the trouble of travelling to the dwelling of the palsied man. Jesus announced He was quite impressed with the centurion’s tremendous faith and promptly healed the centurion’s servant without going to meet him. In His famed address, Jesus taught us, His disciples, to go the second mile in our service. “And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two” (Matthew 5:41). The Elders’ Edification

Try Beginning Again By Gus Nichols

Perhaps some reader has tried to be a Christian, but failed. If so why not try again? Great success does not always come from a single effort. Worthwhile things are worth trying and striving for, even if we must try again and again. In the year 1917 a tornado destroyed our home, blew us away and ruined our crops on a farm before it tore into Carbon Hill, Alabama, and left the dead and the homeless in its wake. But we did not give up and quit. The next spring we found ourselves planting again and soon we were growing a crop. Life is very much like that. Wars are not usually won by a single battle. But battle after battle must be fought before the victory belongs to those who win the last battle. Very few spend a long life in the service of Christ without getting discouraged and, for the moment, giving up in despair. But those who overcome the world are they who (if need be) try again and again—who refuse to surrender to the evil one. If they fail, they go down fighting, soon to rise again. It is easy to give up and quit when the going gets rough, as it most certainly will soon-er or later. Long roads usually have some detours and rough places over which one must travel in order to reach the desired destiny. The Christian life is like running a race. “Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2). “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (I Corinthians 9:26-27). If one falls, he should get up and try again. The new birth is a sort of “Land of Begin-ning Again” (John 3:5). So is a restoration of an erring child of God. “Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multi-tude of sins” (James 5:19-20).
