Reiki for Arthritis Pain

By IARP

Arthritis is a common, painful condition

that affects people all over the world.

Traditional medicine typically cannot cure

arthritis, but patients may be able to

manage their symptoms through

medications, physical therapy and other

treatments. Many patients have also

found that alternative treatment options

like Reiki may potentially help improve

their condition over time.

How Arthritis Affects the Body

Two primary types of arthritis exist: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. While rheumatoid

arthritis is a systemic disease that typically develops between the ages of 20 and 40,

osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that develops in older people. Both of these

conditions are characterized by stiffness, inflammation and pain in the joints. Both

rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis also tend to worsen over time.

Benefits of Reiki for People with Arthritis

Reiki may help people dealing with arthritis in several different ways. Some of the benefits of

Reiki for people with this condition include:

Reduced Sensations of Pain

One of the most significant problems faced by people with arthritis is ongoing pain. For many

people, this pain makes it impossible to keep a job, participate in any hands-on recreational

activity or even enjoy life. Regular Reiki treatments have been shown to reduce perceptions

of pain, which may improve the overall quality of life for an individual suffering from arthritis.

With less pain, arthritis sufferers may also find that they don't need to take as much pain

medication in order to remain comfortable.

Better Range of Motion

Another common problem among people with arthritis is stiffness and poor mobility in the

joints. Some research studies have shown that Reiki treatments may help improve range of

motion, allowing these individuals to move

their joints more freely and effectively.

Improved Mood

Dealing with pain and stiffness on a daily

basis takes a toll on even the most positive

person. As a result, many people with

arthritis eventually become depressed.

Studies have shown that Reiki may

improve symptoms of depression for some

people. Thus, this type of therapy may be

beneficial for arthritis sufferers.

Relevant Research

Several research studies support the effectiveness of Reiki for people with arthritis. Some of

these studies are detailed below.

Reiki Improves Range of Motion

In a study completed by researchers at the University of Arizona, the effect of Reiki on range

of motion in people with limited shoulder mobility was evaluated. Range of Motion increased

by 20 degrees for subjects treated with Reiki, as opposed to only 12 degrees for people

treated with physical therapy.

Reiki Reduces Pain

A study published by the Cross Cancer Institutes explored the ability of Reiki to reduce pain

sensations. Researchers measured pain on both the visual analog scale and a Likert scale.

Patients participating in the study showed a reduction in pain on both scales when treated

with Reiki.

Reiki Alleviates Depression

A third study conducted by researchers at the University of Southern Maine showed that

Reiki treatments can help to alleviate both depression and anxiety.

In addition to the results of these studies, Reiki's efficacy for people with arthritis is also

supported by anecdotal reports from Reiki participants with this condition. Many people have

reported fewer arthritis symptoms as a result of Reiki treatments. In addition, arthritis

sufferers have also said that Reiki helped them to feel a greater sense of balance and

wellbeing, even as they continue to deal with their condition.

Using Reiki to Help with a Career Change

By IARP

Whether you’re fed up, burnt

out or simply finally mustered

up the confidence to call it quits

at your current job, a career

change may be in your cards.

And you have a good chance of

playing those cards just right if

you use Reiki to help you both

target your dream job and set

you up for success.

While changing careers can be an exciting prospect, it is also one that can just as quickly

bring on an avalanche of stress and fear. Leaving your old job and its security behind can

start up the stress and fear engine, which revs into full gear when a slew of questions start to

bombard your mind:

· Should I go for something I love or something that will make me rich?

· What if I get bored with this new career?

· Is anyone even hiring?

· What kind of training, education and skills do I need?

· Will I make enough money to survive?

· What if I totally mess it up and end up broke, alone and living on the side

of a highway somewhere?

Stop: Get Reiki on Your Side

For starters you want to stop. Stop the rambling stream of thoughts. Take a deep breath.

Then turn to Reiki for help. Many benefits of this ancient healing method just so happen to

align perfectly with some of the challenges a career change can bring.

Page 7: The Reiki TimesReiki for Arthritis Pain, The Reiki Times Vol. 22, Issue Q4, 2018 3 with Reiki. Reiki Alleviates Depression A third study conducted by researchers at the University

Reduces stress:

When you’re less stressed and more relaxed, you can think with greater clarity and are less

apt to be consumed by fear. Start by thinking about when you felt the happiest. What were

you doing? Who were you with? Where were you doing this thing? These and similar

questions can help you pinpoint the type of work environment, duties and coworkers your

dream job may hold.

Balances mind and emotions:

While you’re in this calm and confident state of mind, review your background. What type of

training, education and skills do you already possess? Which are your strongest? Is there

something people always come to you for help with? These are further clues that can guide

you in a direction of a successful and satisfying new career.

Opens your heart, prompts spiritual growth:

When you base a job on your passions, rather than your

paycheck, the universe often has a way of making sure the

paychecks do come in. Opening your heart with Reiki

helps to ensure you are aligned with your life’s purpose,

which is also a very good goal for your new career.

Focusing on spiritual development instead of material gain can not only be much more

fulfilling, but it can automatically lead to material gain. When you struggle and strive for the

material, on the other hand, you don’t automatically get a spiritual boost.

Reiki can help clear out fears and stress, assist with clarity and spiritual development, and

imbue you with the confidence and energy you need to move forward pursuing your passion.

You’ll know you’re on the right track when things seem to fall naturally into place, and your

work is never woeful since you're doing what you love. Finding a Reiki Practitioner or Teacher Near You If you are interested in trying a Reiki session or learning Reiki or if you would like to learn

Reiki Healing for Digestive Disorders

By IARP

Digestive disorders dramatically

impact the sufferer's quality of

life. Depending on the issue, the

sufferer may be forced to avoid

certain foods to alleviate

symptoms, or the sufferer may

have symptoms regardless of

the preventative steps he or she

takes. People with these

disorders often spend their

entire lives searching for ways

to improve their condition, both

in traditional and alternative medicine. One of the approaches to treatment commonly utilized

in integrative medicine is Reiki, a modality that may be able to provide some relief even when

other treatments have failed.

How Can Reiki Help People with Digestive Disorders?

People with digestive disorders may experience a number of symptoms, including bloating,

pain, bleeding, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, weight changes and trouble

swallowing. Depending on the nature of the condition, these symptoms may or may not come

and go on their own. For example, people with irritable bowel syndrome tend to notice more

symptoms when they eat trigger foods or experience high levels of stress. People with

lactose intolerance, on the other hand, tend to notice symptoms only after consuming dairy

products.

Regardless of the specifics of the disorder, participating in regular Reiki sessions may

potentially be beneficial. The idea behind this type of therapy is that illnesses, pain and other

problems within the body, including digestive disorders, are related to disturbances or

blockages in the individual's energy pathways. Reiki is a non-invasive therapeutic technique

Page 10: The Reiki TimesReiki for Arthritis Pain, The Reiki Times Vol. 22, Issue Q4, 2018 3 with Reiki. Reiki Alleviates Depression A third study conducted by researchers at the University

intended to help resolve these disturbances, restore the normal flow of spiritual energy and

create relaxation to assist in helping to improve the client's symptoms.

Specific Benefits of Reiki

Some of the specific potential benefits of Reiki for people with digestive disorders may

include:

• Assisting with alleviation of pain. - Many people who have undergone Reiki treatments

report fewer pain sensations after therapy. Because most digestive disorders cause

pain, this may be especially beneficial for individuals with these conditions.

• Lower stress levels. - Studies have shown that people who participate in Reiki sessions

report feeling less stressed than those

who do not participate in this type of

therapy. Because stress plays a role in

the pathology of many digestive

conditions, this effect of Reiki may help to

lessen the symptoms of individuals with

digestive problems indirectly.

• More control over the condition. - When an

individual participates in Reiki sessions, he or she is doing something proactive to

improve his or her condition. This gives the individual a greater sense of control over

the condition and life in general.

• Improved digestive function. - Currently, very little scientific research on Reiki's ability to

improve digestive disorders has been completed. However, anecdotal reports from

individuals who suffer from digestive disorders indicate that Reiki may be able to help

create a relaxation response for the body which may aid in the body’s ability to help

heal the digestive tract.

Spotlight on Mrs. Hawayo Takata

By IARP

We honor the spiritual lineage of Reiki and are

happy to shine a beautiful spotlight this issue on

Mrs. Hawayo Takata in honor of her birthdate in

December. Though Mrs. Hawayo Takata was a

second-generation Master in the Usui Reiki lineage,

you'd be hard pressed to find a person more

influential in spreading and preserving Reiki than

she.

Mrs. Takata was born on the island of Kauai, Hawaii

on December 24, 1900 to parents who were

immigrants from Japan. She later married the

bookkeeper of the plantation where she was employed and together they had two children.

After her husband died young in 1930, Mrs. Takata was forced to work constantly in order to

support herself and her children. It wasn't long before the effects of this work took its toll, and

Mrs. Takata developed severe abdominal pains, a lung condition, and, eventually, a nervous

breakdown.

After traveling to Japan to visit her parents, Mrs. Takata decided to stop into the clinic of Dr.

Hayashi - Dr. Usui's direct understudy and one of the founders in the Usui Reiki lineage.

There, she began receiving Reiki treatments for her conditions. Shortly thereafter, Mrs.

Takata began to notice her health improving. After four months of twice-daily treatments,

Mrs. Takata was completely healed.

Having been made a believer in the effectiveness of Reiki, Mrs. Takata wanted to learn it

herself. She began studying under Dr. Hayashi and had earned Second Degree Reiki

(Okuden) within a year. By 1938, she had earned the rank of Reiki Master. Having returned

to Hawaii, Mrs. Takata worked to establish a Reiki clinic in Hawaii, making her instrumental

in helping spread Reiki to the Western world.

Page 13: The Reiki TimesReiki for Arthritis Pain, The Reiki Times Vol. 22, Issue Q4, 2018 3 with Reiki. Reiki Alleviates Depression A third study conducted by researchers at the University

2

In spreading Reiki to the West, Mrs. Takata worked to simplify it, honing her version of Reiki

down to a series of treatments and techniques that she found to be the most effective.

Though her teaching and healing methods ended up differing from Japanese Reiki, they

were effective, and the popularity of Reiki in Hawaii quickly began to spread.

During her time at her Hawaii clinic, Mrs. Takata initiated twenty-two Reiki Masters. In

addition to playing a critical role in training the third generation of Reiki Masters, it was Mrs.

Takata who helped preserve Reiki and help keep it alive during its most trying times,

particularly after WWII ended. From Japan to Hawaii then and on to the US Mainland to

eventually all over the world today, people experience the benefits of the healing tradition of

Reiki.

Mrs. Takata complied with the United States' increasingly stricter licensing requirements for

her Hawaiian clinics, and she was able to help keep Reiki alive at a time when regulation

threatened to smother it. Mrs. Takata had a very important role in preserving the knowledge

of Reiki and passing it on to those who would appreciate and honor it. For this reason, as

well as the many other contributions Mrs. Takata made to Reiki, she is remembered as being

one of the most important figures in Reiki's lineage.

Today, clients and students of Reiki continue to benefit from Mrs. Takata's admirable efforts

to expand and preserve Reiki. Though Mrs. Takata transitioned on December 11, 1980, her

life, legacy, and contributions to Reiki and the world at large continue to live on to this day.

Spiritual Healing Through Reiki

By IARP

Although Reiki isn’t a religious or particular belief system, many people who experience it

feel uplifted and connected to their innate spirituality. Reiki spiritual healing can occur

whether an individual visits a Reiki professional or during self-treatment.

Self-care

Reiki is all about self-care. This passive

vibrational healing process promotes balance

throughout the entire person. Reiki emotional

healing soothes in stormy times. Any age

group, from children to seniors, can enjoy a

potential reduction in pain, fatigue or other

issues through Reiki healing. Reiki also helps

to clear negative thoughts and creates peace of

mind.

Many people who partake in treatments hold

that Reiki spiritual healing is closer to meditation than to other types of energy therapies.

Spiritual Origins

Reiki treatments currently practiced in the United States link to the 1920s and the teachings

of a Japanese lay monk, Mikao Usui. A lifelong spiritual aspirant, he lived during a time

where Shinto, Buddhist and Taoist practices co-existed. Thanks to one of his students, Dr.

Chujiro Hayashi and then through his student Mrs. Hawayo Takata, Reiki arrived in 1937 in

Hawaii and later reached the mainland of the USA, eventually spreading all over the world.

Reiki derives from two Japanese words. Rei is God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power. Ki

represents life force energy. Together, they signify life force energy that’s spiritually guided

and that flows through each person. The spiritual level is often called the root level or highest

Page 15: The Reiki TimesReiki for Arthritis Pain, The Reiki Times Vol. 22, Issue Q4, 2018 3 with Reiki. Reiki Alleviates Depression A third study conducted by researchers at the University

2

level of healing.

How Reiki Spiritual Healing Works

Reiki is very easy to learn. The ability to use it gets transferred to a student during a class.

Students can reach an unlimited amount of life force energy to create Reiki spiritual healing.

Many people who enjoy the spiritual benefits of Reiki say that the practice puts them in closer

touch with experiencing their religion rather than merely its intellectual concepts. As the basis

of spiritual healing, Reiki promotes peace and harmony. Some researchers suggest that the

trigger for healing occurs at a sub-physical level, or the biofield.

This largely undocumented energy field has intricate layers,

proponents believe, that both surround and penetrate the human

body.

Spiritual healing has been linked to the therapeutic benefits of

vibration. The hands of a Reiki practitioner hold energetic

vibrations of wellness.

Peace and greater potential wellness may occur during self-

treatment or during a session with a practitioner. A Reiki session

can occur on a massage table or while seated comfortably in a

chair. During some sessions, practitioners apply a light touch with

their hands. Some hold their hands slightly above the body.

Sometimes a person experiences a sense of warming or tingling. Others experience total

relaxation that gives them peace of mind and opens them to spiritual and other healing.

Reiki is an ideal way to connect or reconnect with the spiritual component of yourself,

especially in this busy digital world of modern times. Pleasant, relaxing sessions with a Reiki

practitioner typically last an hour to 90 minutes and provide a space of relaxation, peace and

calm to help you connect more deeply with your true inner self.
