This article is written based on the research held in Iran. The participants are the
English teachers and learners in Iranian universities, high schools and private language
institutes. The aim of the study was to investigate whether male and female teachers and
learners of English hold different views on characteristics of an effective English
teacher. The participants are 59 teachers (29 males and 30 females) and 215 learners (78
males and 137 females). The instrument to collect the data is paper and pencil
questionnaire.
SUMMARY OF THE PAPER
Teachers in general, especially English teachers, have a big and fundamental role to
their learners learning and academic achievement.
(Markley, 2004) an effective and efficient learning is highly depends on teachers and
the action which they take in the class. (Dembo and Gibson, 1985, Goddard, Hoy, and
Hoy, 2000) stated that the teachers perceptions of effective teacher can highly
influence their teaching and as a result their learners learning.
Teachers and learners may have different perceptions about an effective English
teacher. Students also bring their own assumption about learning and their perceptions
about characteristics of an effective English teacher.

By knowing the learners perception, teachers know about characteristics of an effective
English teacher from the learners view. So, they can take a decision in the ways of
teaching the students.
