I.2 IMPERIAL BARREL AWARD IBA or Imperial Barrel Award in an annual prospective basin evaluation competition for

geoscience graduate students from universities around the world. University teams compete to win scholarship funds for their geoscience department and the international recognition that comes from competing or winning in the competition. The program is rigorous and contributes to AAPG's mission of promoting petroleum geoscience training and advancing the careers of geoscience students.

In this global competition, university teams analyze a dataset (geology, geophysics, land, production infrastructure, and other relevant materials) in the eight weeks prior to their local competition. Each team delivers their results in a 25 minute presentation to a panel of industry experts. Students have the chance to use state of the art technology on a real dataset, receive feedback from an industry panel, impress potential employers in the audience, and win cash awards for their school. The judges will select the winning team on the basis of the technical quality, clarity and originality of presentation.

Students from universities around the world will be selected trough the very tough selection. Firstly, each team will fight in region area. From that region, the winner of region round will passed to the main competition. The main competition will held in Long Beach, California. The selected team will do the same thing as they did in region competition, but they will fight the other winners from other regions.

Page | 9

Page 10: The Report

In the Pendadaran I, UGM Team reported their progress and conducted a presentation simulation towards the judges. Their progress were up to geochemical appraisal of the study area. Both judges gave many suggestions about the presentation. The most crucial part of the presentation is the way it presented i.e. the content flow design and data presentation. Mr. Wibisono suggested to reduce the slide show amount and add extra details in important data, such as labels and well positions. Mr. Jarot questioned the migration time proposed in the presentation and gave input about the further step of analysis. Nevertheless, the judges were impressed by the depth of the analysis considering only 3 weeks of work.

Suggestions from judges of Pendadaran I was valuable for the team as they then knew the right way to develop their analysis.Photos of the Event (complete photos available in DVD):

II. 4. 7. Presentation Evaluation IIthe Presentation Evaluation II or Pendadaran II (18/02, 09.00 – 12.30) was held in 2.1. Seminary

Room, Geological Engineering UGM, inviting Rakhmadi Avianto (Samudera Energy), Roeskamto Soeripto (consultant), Murdoko (consultant). and Jarot Setyowiyoto (UGM).

In the Pendadaran II, UGM Team presented their final work toward the jury in a complete form, then the jury gave suggestions which part of the presentation should be omitted. Again, juries gave attention to the presentation scheme of the team, regardless the excellent analysis content. In industrial world, it seemed that presentation should be as convincing as possible, convincing enough

Page 11: The Report

so that the potential investors agree to invest in the presented block. The judges wanted to see an improvement in information layout for the actual competition. This Pendadaran II also revealed that there was a gap between university and industrial work, fortunately through the event the team saw the problem and could have time to improve their presentation.

News 3 : Introduction to IBA Talkshow Page | 22

Page 23: The Report

On Monday, 23rd January 2012 has been organized such a very stunning and different course on theme IBA (Imperial Barrel Award), wrapped in “Exclusive Course and Sharing” and carried out at sedimentographic laboratory of Geological Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada. On that course, we were providing 2 speakers, they were: Erawati Fitriani Adji (UI Team for IBA 2011), and Mohammad Wahdanadi (Representative of Asia Pasific Region In IBA 2008, in Texas, USA).

Firstly, we planned to welcome three speakers at once, but one was obstacled to come, so we just provided two speakers only, however that was not a big deal for us to make the course ran well. Another obstacle was late, the speakers got 30 minutes late in attending the course, and it fairly made us confused to handle it, but because we are professional so, we could handle it by communicating with the entire of the audiences and making a funny games led by our vice president of AAPG. The condition kind turned in to weird yet great!! Actually the purpose of this exclusive course and sharing was to seek out, look for, auditioning, anyone who have a gut and willingness to be the next dream team for 2013, and through this course we wish that we could get the new team that absolutely could replace the previous team to compete for the following year.

The first material which was given by the speaker related to basic knowledge as to IBA, Imperial Barrel Award is a worldwide competition held by AAPG every year between different countries all over the world ,each university in the region can participate and represented by only one team. IBA is one in a lifetime, so the team who has ever enrolled this competition is totally banned to participate for twice. The second part which was given by the speaker related to the experiences sharing, the both speakers were really open minded and communicative to share anything and so were the audiences. They communicatively asked to the both speakers about IBA, how to analyze the data set well, and how to serve the data into a good presentation, and the most important

Page | 23

Page 24: The Report

question was what needed to become an IBA dream team. The student team has tried to analyze and observe the data from the task given of making a detailed assessment of the petroleum potential within the given area. They are expected to “think outside the box” and look at new exploration models based on the most recent published research and their given education.

After the course ended, continued by exclusive sharing about the speakers’ experiences in facing the competition, and also the audiences were gathered to discuss and ask the ways to win. The speakers also explained about several evaluation methods in IBA it self, they consisted:

1. Material content2. Material mastering3. Presentation method

After sharing session, presenter opened door prize giving session, represented by the speaker to pick the most active participant along the course. And the following session was momento giving, represented by our president of AAPG and we didn’t forget to capture this special moment together in a photo session took place outside the room. The course was totally impressive and amazing, we didn’t only look for the next candidates of IBA next year, but also we got the real and super knowledge about IBA directly transferred by the professional.

News 4: UGM Participates in AAPG Imperial Barrel Award 2012 Asia Pacific Round March 1, 2012

Last Wednesday (29/2) was an exciting day for Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Team, as on 14.30 Western Indonesia time, the team finally presented their 7-weeks hard work upon a dataset of Schangen Block, North Sea, Netherland, in the Asia Pacific round of American Association of Petroleum Geologists’s Imperial Barrel Award (AAPG IBA) 2012. The regional stage of the international basin/prospect competition was held via Teleconference to Singapore where the judging panel, namely Peter Baille (President of AAPG Asia Pacific), Peter Purcell (TGFI Australia), and William Houston (New Zealand Oil and Gas) located. The five Master Students of Geological Engineering UGM –Rahmadi Hidayat, Nurrakhmi Qadaryati, Pritta Ariyani Machmud, Maulana Jati Perdana, Mahesa Sufi—acted as the New Venture group that must convince the judging panel to invest in the Schangen Block via 25-minutes PowerPoint presentation. Rahmadi Hidayat, the team captain remarked that the teleconference was running quite smoothly and that judges commented that they were shocked by the level of analysis the UGM team had presented. It is still far to conclude, though, as there are still many universities from all over Asia Pacific that surely did their best to be selected as the only Asia Pacific representative in IBA finals that will take place in Long Beach, CA, USA during AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE) 2012.

Page | 25

Page 26: The Report

Luckily the team has prepared through a series of warming up events, starting with exclusive sharing (21/01) with Wahdanadi (Pertamina EP) and Erawati (Medco) that had experienced being participants in IBA 2008 and 2011. Wahdanadi and team even made their way to IBA Finals in Texas, USA. being the first and only Asia Pacific representative that came from Indonesia. This sharing gave idea to 2012 UGM Team of how IBA competition tasted like. Following the sharing is the public talkshow “Introduction to IBA” by the same speakers, made to raise awareness of the most prestigious basin analysis competition and also to track a potential of the future UGM team members.

Having analyzed the dataset for 3 weeks, a mid-evaluation (28/01) was conducted, inviting Wibisono (Medco), Rovicky Dwi Putrohari (Hess) and Dr. Djarot Setyowiyoto (UGM). Suggestions, especially from the industrial panel, was invaluable for keeping UGM Team in the right track towards final presentation.

To keep out from technical issues, the AAPG Asia Pacific held a teleconference training (23/01) to check the smoothness of each participating universities’ teleconference connections.

A final-presentation evaluation then also conducted on (18/02), inviting Rakhmadi Avianto (Samudera Energy), Roeskamto Soeripto (independent consultant), Murdoko (independent consultant) and Sarju Winardi (UGM) to evaluate the finished work of UGM Team. This event could connect the university “language-of-speaking” with industrial experts expectations, so that the UGM Team learned how to present effectively and better met industrial world standards—ready to rock the Asia Pasific battle on 28/02.

Team members, though admitted their exhaust of working long hours to deliver the best possible analysis, were claimed of being glad as part of IBA competition. Rahmadi, the captain said, “ actually I am very familiar in basin analysis, but this is the first time I ever deal with European basins that ranged up to Paleozoikum while my daily projects are Indonesian basins which are usually Tertiary or younger. This experience is invaluable for me and I am thankful to be involved in Imperial Barrel Award. ”

Yet all of the preparation and competition processess were possible to be done only because of the kind sponsorship of Hess, a world-leading oil company. As the local committee for UGM Team, we from AAPG UGM Student Chapter would like to express our gratitude for Hess for supporting UGM in this educational competition. Let’s hope for the best for UGM team!
