Welcome to the February issue of The Resident. Well a fair bit has happened since the last issue, with upheaval in the Middle East, having far reaching consequences. Closer to home, I am pleased to announce that as of the beginning of this month we have launched a new online supplement - The Resident Plus - which will be published on the 1st of each month and will contain more features and articles as well as the usual news and information items. Initially The Resident Plus is only available in English, but we hope to produce a Spanish version in the near future. A total of 49 fi lms from various countries were entered in San Roque’s XXXIII International Week of Short Films which was held from Monday 14 to Friday 18 February when the festival concluded with a gala award ceremony.The event was held at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theatre with the fi lms being shown from 9 pm each evening with this year an extra session

on Thursday evening beginning at 7 pm.The fi nal selection was picked from over 200 entries, with the 49 fi lms in the competition being those of the level of quality and format required.The fi lms competed for seven awards, including best fi lm which carried a 3,000 euro prize.

La fecha del 13 de febrero de 2011 quedará en los anales de la historia para el golfi sta sanroqueño Álvaro Quirós, que se adjudicó ayer domingo el triunfo en el Dubai Desert Classic, perteneciente a la Carrera a Dubai del Circuito Europeo, tras completar una intensa jornada fi nal en la que remontó su mal inicio hasta alcanzar la victoria en los Emiratos Árabes. Quirós ha recibido la felicitación municipal.Quirós ganó con un total de 277 golpes, once bajo par y uno menos que el sudafricano James Kingston y el danés Anders Hansen. El de San Roque, que necesitó recibir tratamiento en su brazo durante la jornada, vivió un día lleno de altibajos, pero fi nalmente alcanzó el triunfo con un inicio arrollador en los cinco primeros hoyos, que resolvió con un ‘eagle’ y dos ‘birdies’, pero la victoria se le alejó en el hoyo siete por culpa de un triple ‘bogey’. Un nuevo ‘birdie’ precedió al gran momento del torneo, el hoyo en uno que Quirós embocó en el 11 y que le procuró un ‘albatros’. Over the coming months arrangements have been made to bring parties of visitors from Coin, Grazalema and Alozaina, with more being planned.Important relationships between Manilva and various government institutions are beingmaintained which have resulted in projects which will improve the tourism infrastructure such as the bridge linking the promenades in Sabinillas and Casares, as well as the new stretch of promenade linking the Port and Castillo de la Duquesa.

Trip to the Cadiz Carnival

Todo empezó hace 3 meses en el IES Las Viñas (el instituto de Manilva). Tercero de la ESO B hicieron un trabajo sobre la leucemia. Tenían que buscar información sobre esta enfermedad (qué es, quién es afectado por ella, prevención, curas, …) y al fi nal tenían que escribir una conclusión diciendo que podría hacer la sociedad para ayudar a las personas que sufren la leucemia. en los recreos, y llegaron a un acuerdo de vender rosas para el Día de San Valentín. El director les dio permiso, y el grupo de alumnos inmediatamente empezaron a hacer carteles y a informar a los alumnos y profesores del instituto. Floristería Maribel en Sabinillas les prometió entregarles rosas de una preciosa calidad a su precio de coste. Junto a las tarjetas de dedicatorias que diseñaron crearon una oferta muy atractiva.Los alumnos querían que todo el dinero de las rosas pudiera ir a la AECC, y decidieron ir a pequeñas empresas locales para pedir su colaboración y patrocinar algo de dinero para comprar las rosas. Muchas empresas participaron, y en menos de 2 días recogieron el dinero sufi ciente para comprar las rosas.El lunes 7 de Febrero los alumnos tomaron los primeros pedidos en el instituto. El último día de pedidos estaban las listas llenas de pedidos, estaban muy ocupados,

It all started 3 months ago at the IES Las Viñas (the Manilva Secondary school). Year 10b (3º de la ESO b) began a project about leukaemia. They had to fi nd information about this disease (what it is, who gets it, cures, prevention, etc.) and at the end they had to write their conclusions saying what actions could be taken to help the people who are suffering from Leukaemia. This project had a real impact on one of the students, Nienke Ernstsen, especially when she discovered that the illness often appears in children under 15. Together with a group of students from her class she decided to take action, to try and raise money for the organisation AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) who invests in research to fi nd cures and preventive measurements. The biology teacher, Josefa Arrebola, decided to help them out. They discussed several ideas during the breaks at school, and came up with selling roses in school for Valentine’s Day. The headmaster gave them the permission to go ahead and the group immediately started to make posters and leafl ets to inform the teachers and students. Floristería Maribel in Sabinillas promised to deliver them top quality roses at wholesale prices. Together with their own designed greeting cards they had created a very attractive offer. Yet the students wanted for all the money from the students to go to the AECC and decided to ask local businesses to cooperate and sponsor them to cover the costs for

the roses. Lots of businesses participated and in less than 2 days they had raised enough the money to buy the roses.On Monday the 7th of February the group started to take the orders at school. The fi nal order day it was so busy that they had to skip class to get everything organised. Once they saw how many orders they had taken, they jumped with joy! A total of 225 roses! Adding up to a total of 380€! After a busy day of wrapping and attaching the greeting cards, fi nally on Monday the 14th of February the roses were delivered to the students. Not only did this project raise money for the children with Leukaemia, it also generated many happy faces in school. Next to roses bought by the truly ‘enamorados’, roses were bought to put a smile on a friend’s face, or to make up with someone and settle a fi ght, to thank a teacher and sometimes even to take home and thank a mum.The initiator Nienke commented: “There were very memorable moments during this project. The notes people attached to the roses every now and then touched my heart. And the positive comments from students and teachers made us glow with pride. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this project. It has shown me another way to experience joy. The satisfaction of giving a little hand to help other people, of creating a smile on someone’s face for Valentine’s Day also created a box full of happiness for me!” The proud team (Josefa Arrebola (teacher),

No sólo pudieron recoger dinero para jóvenes con leucemia, sino también hicieron posibles varias sonrisas en las caras de las personas en el instituto. Las rosas no fueron compradas únicamente para los enamorados, pero también para agradecer a un amigo, para arreglar pequeñas discusiones y peleas, para darle las gracias a un profesor o incluso para darles las gracias a una madre.La iniciadora Nienke comentó: “Tuve muchos recuerdos memorables durante este trabajo. Las dedicatorias que las personas añadieron algunas veces me llegaron al corazón. Los comentarios de los profesores y compañeros míos me dieron mucha confi anza y orgullo sobre mi misma, me ha encantado hacer este proyecto. He experimentado la alegría de una manera totalmente inesperada. La procesionaria del pino (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) es una especie de mariposa abunda en los bosques de pinos de España, donde es una plaga muy extendida. Además de los pinos, habita también en cedros y abetos. Las mariposas se aparean en verano. La hembra pone sus huevos sobre las copas de los árboles, y 30 ó 40 días después nacen las orugas (generalmente en los meses de septiembre-octubre). Las orugas construyen sobre los árboles sus nidos, en los que pasan el invierno. Entre febrero y abril las orugas descienden al suelo desde sus nidos, en características fi las indias (de ahí su nombre común de “procesionarias”). Finalmente se entierran en el suelo, donde pasan a la fase de crisálida. En verano las crisálidas hacen eclosión, y surgen las mariposas, que se aparean, comenzando de nuevo el ciclo.Durante el invierno, las orugas se alimentan de las acículas de los árboles (pinos principalmente) en los que instalan sus nidos, produciendo su defoliación.Las orugas están cubiertas de pelos urticantes que se desprenden y fl otan en el aire, por lo que pueden provocar irritación en oídos, nariz y garganta en los seres humanos, así como intensas reacciones alérgicas.Esta marcha de las líneas es una estrategia de protección que da la impresión de una serpiente para disuadir a los posibles

depredadores, las aves, por ejemplo.Si alguna parte del tren de la oruga se ve perturbado se envía un mensaje a todo el mundo a bordo y un irritante se libera de los pelos fi nos que cubren los cuerpos orugas hacia el intruso. Esta irritante no es disimilar a la quemadura de ortigas, aunque algunas personas tienen una reacción alérgica de alto y pueden necesitar tratamiento médico, un sarpullido en el cuello es el síntoma más evidente.En el caso de los bebés y los perros este irritante puede ser fatal. Los nidos se están llenas de este irritante, las personas que trabajan o pasan por debajo de los árboles con nidos pueden notar una ligera irritación de polvo fl otando en el aire.

The recent warm weather has triggered the activity the pine processionary caterpillar. This furry little critter has spent the winter in its ‘candyfl oss’ nests in the local pine trees and is now on the march looking for a nice bit of ground in which to pupate over the summer. The pine processionary caterpillar is the offspring of the moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa and besides being a serious pest to pine trees, stripping the young needles from their branches, it is also a danger to humans and animals alike.The caterpillars have an unusual characteristic in that they climb down the trees and march along the ground nose to tail in a long ribbon, a habit which gives them their common name, the caterpillars have a potent defence system in the form of thousands of fi ne hairs which they discharge when threatened, and these hairs contain irritants which when touching the skin or eyes can cause serious problems. A continuación le preguntamos sobre la campaña del PSOE MANILVA.

Nos comenta que los tiempos han cambiado, que ahora los tiempos son distintos, por lo que hay que dar respuestas nuevas a problemas nuevos.

Actualmente el objetivo primordial de nuestra fuerza política es

conseguir empleo para todos. Frente a los proyectos millonarios

de otros tiempos, que ahora resultarían inverosímiles, hace falta

redundar en lo cercano, en los problemas del día a día, en la salud,

la educación, la limpieza, la seguridad; es decir, en todo aquello

que nos rodea y nos hace vivir en condiciones adecuadas. Por

tanto, ahora más que nunca, el Ayuntamiento debe ser aquel que

ofrece los servicios básicos necesarios para que los ciudadanos

puedan ejercer como tales: como ciudadanos –dice Salvador

Zotano-.

En los momentos de bonanza económica los Ayuntamientos

se han dedicado a ofrecer servicios que no les eran propios,

como, por ejemplo, grandes conciertos musicales o actividades

lúdicas que, en realidad, no les competían. En estos momentos,

los Ayuntamientos deben dedicarse, principalmente, a dar

respuestas concretas a problemas concretos, a dar servicios

básicos de calidad, En este sentido, hemos de caminar de la mano

de la inversión privada; si se quiere dar un concierto, debería

haber un promotor del concierto o un empresario interesado, si

quieres ofrecer alguna actividad específi ca, deberíamos contar

con los autónomos que se dediquen a realizar esa actividad.

La competencia municipal debe pasar, como ya he dicho, por

dar seguridad, limpieza, infraestructuras básicas, legalidad

urbanística, seguridad jurídica para los inversores, la defensa y

promoción de nuestra marca turística, etc… -continúa Salvador

Zotano-.

Le preguntamos si estos cuatro años venideros serán como los últimos cuatro años.Y nos contesta con rotundidad que no, que se está produciendo

un cambio de ciclo y ello conlleva un cambio de modelo al que

habremos de adaptarnos.

En defi nitiva, se está produciendo un cambio de modelo

productivo que hemos de afrontar con energía y determinación.

Vivimos en una zona, la Costa del Sol, que nos permite cambiar de

modelo productivo a nivel turístico sin tener que volver a políticas del

pasado que resultaron muy agresivas. En ese sentido, debemos hacer

lo contrario: poner en valor lo que tenemos, lo que siempre hemos

tenido; eso que ha permitido que vivan aquí personas desde hace

milenios; así, tartésicos, fenicios, romanos, árabes. A esto podemos

añadir que tenemos un término municipal del que se ha desarrollado

menos del 20 % del suelo, por eso, debemos poner en valor el 80 %

del suelo restante, de una forma equilibrada, potenciando los valores

que poseemos (el lago de Pajaritos, los restos tartésicos de Castillejos

de Alcorrín, la villa romana sita en El Castillo, nuestras playas salvajes,

…). Porque todo ello puede ser un reclamo turístico de calidad.

Aunque los cambios no resulten tarea fácil, los acometeremos

desde la convicción de que serán buenos para todos –nos informa

Salvador-.

Le preguntamos sobre las listas electorales.Es una lista electoral de personas que representan lo que es el Partido

Socialista; una mezcla de experiencia y gente nueva; en ese sentido,

sobre el 50 % de la lista electoral nunca antes habían formado

parte de una candidatura y el 50 % restante sí. En todo caso, es una

representación bastante amplia de la realidad social de Manilva,

Sabinillas, El Castillo, las urbanizaciones, los nacidos en España y los

no nacidos en nuestro país, de gente joven y de gente menos joven; y,

todos, dispuestos a conseguir el objetivo básico de nuestro partido, el

Partido Socialista, transformar la realidad que nos rodea haciéndola

más justa, más solidaria, más igualitaria.

Lo cierto es que tenemos fundadas esperanzas en esta campaña

porque actualmente estamos en la mejor posición posible. Como ya

sabéis, hace veinticuatro años que el Partido Socialista no es la fuerza

política más votada. Es la primera vez desde el año 1987 en la que

tenemos verdaderas opciones de ganar, cuestión esta facilitada por la

debilidad actual de algunos partidos de la oposición y la realidad de

algunos otros partidos que tienen menos que ofrecer, como proyecto

de futuro, a nuestros ciudadanos. Por todo ello, pienso que el Partido

Socialista se encuentra en el momento de madurez óptima para

conseguir que la ciudadanía nos acepte como la alternativa real

para transformar Manilva. Tenemos la responsabilidad de asumir

esa tarea y, como tenemos en nuestro interior un modelo claro

de desarrollo, sabemos lo que debemos hacer y vamos a hacerlo.

En ese sentido, somos una fuerza política que hemos demostrado

seguridad y confi anza para no sólo pedalear cuesta abajo, sino

también para pedalear cuesta arriba; estamos cerca del llano

y tenemos el músculo sufi ciente para llegar a él y hacer que

andemos rápidos.

Tenemos muy claros nuestros compromisos: la buena gestión de

los servicios básicos, la transmisión de seguridad y confi anza, la

ilusión, la determinación, y, sobre todo, trabajo, mucho trabajo

para todos los que lo necesitan. En el mismo instante en el que

seamos capaces de aceptar que hemos de cambiar algunas cosas,

seremos capaces de crear empleo de calidad para todos, porque

hay muchas actividades que pueden realizar pequeñas empresas,

como alternativa al turismo tradicional, y que nos van a permitir

ofrecer alternativas de ocio a todas la personas que se acerquen a

nuestro término.

Todo este proceso de transformación el Partido Socialista lo

asume como un reto, pensando, con los pies en el suelo, que tras

las próximas elecciones de mayo, en seis meses podemos impulsar

el cambio de sistema, en dos años podemos afi anzar el modelo y

en estos próximos cuatro años podemos consolidar una Manilva

de futuro, con un espacio propio dentro de la marca Costa del Sol,

que nos permita enfrentarnos a los años venideros con seguridad

en nosotros mismos y con un futuro real para nuestras familias y

nuestros descendientes. Somos un pueblo con presente y futuro

were not within their area of responsibility. For example organising

major music concerts or other events for which, in reality, they

didn’t have the experience or skills to be arranging. These days

these local authorities should be concentrating on fi nding

concrete solutions to concrete problems, and to providing quality

basic services. If you want to stage a concert, then you should be

looking to the private sector, and collaborate with experienced

concert promoters or entrepreneurs. As I said before the job of the

local council is to provide security, sanitation, basic infrastructure,

planning, investment security, and the defense and promotion of

the borough’s tourism image.” continued Mr Zotano.

Do you think the next four years will be like the last four?He answers with an emphatic no. “It is necessary to completely

change our approach to what we have here, something that will

take a good deal of energy and determination. Fortunately we

live in an area, the Costa del Sol, which allows us to make this change

and to avoid a return to the past policies of aggressive development.

In that sense we do the opposite and preserve what we already

have, and that has allowed people to live here for millenia such as

the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, etc. For instance in the borough of

Manilva only some 20% of the land is developed, but that doesn’t

mean that the remaining 80% has no value, as it does, with the

Pajaritos Lake, the Bronze Age hill fort of Alcorrin Castillejos, the

Roman remains at El Castillo, our beautiful beaches, countryside,

etc., all of which could be a major tourist attraction. Although this

change in attitude may not be an easy task, it will be undertaken

with the conviction that it will be for the benefi t of everyone” says

Salvador.

What criteria governed the compilation of your electoral listThe list is comprised of those people who best represent what is

the Social Party, a mix of experience and youth, half of the list have

never stood for offi ce before, whilst the remaining half have. In

essence they represent the social reality of Manilva, Sabinillas and

Castillo, the urbanisations, both Spanish nationals and those born

overseas; the young, the not so young; and all selected to achieve

the Socialist Party’s basic objective - to create a fairer, more caring,

more egalitarian, society.

The truth of the matter is we feel we are now the strongest we have

ever been, as you know for the past 24 years the Socialist Party has

not enjoyed the largest slice of the votes, and this is the fi rst time

since 1987 that we have a realistic chance of winning, thanks in part

to the weakness of some of the opposition parties and the lack of

clear policy on the part of others. Therefore I feel that the Socialist

Party is at its peak eff ectiveness to ensure that the public will

accept it as the only real alternative to transform Manilva. We

accept the responsibility to assume this task, and have a clear

sense of direction, and we know we need to do, and we’ll do it.

As a political force we have demonstrated our confi dence and

security not only for the downhill ride, but also the strength and

conviction for the long pedal uphill. We are nearly on the fl at and

have enough muscle not just to get there, but to begin to pick up

some speed.

We have made clear our commitments, the management of basic

services, to bring a sense of security and confi dence, enthusiasm,

determination, and above all work, and plenty of work for all

that need it. We accept that there have to be changes, and we

will be able to create quality jobs for all, because there are many

opportunities for the creation of small businesses as an alternative

to traditional tourism, which will allow us to provide a wide range

of leisure activities to all our visitors.

This transformation that the Socialist Party envisages would

begin after the May elections and within 6 months we would

drive through a change in the system; and within two years we

could secure the way forward and after four years we can build a

future for Manilva which can occupy its own space with the Costa

del Sol brand, allowing us to face the coming years with a security

and real future for ourselves and our families. We are a community

El alcalde de Estepona, David Valadez, y la concejala delegada de Cultura, Silvia Cabrera, han inaugurado la biblioteca infantil “Elvira Lindo”, instalada en el centro cultural “Padre Manuel” del municipio. El nuevo local cuenta con tres partes diferenciadas: la zona de informática, que ha pasado de cuatro a seis puestos con conexión a Internet, además de disponibilidad de conexión inalámbrica (Wifi ), la videoteca y la zona infantil, que ha aumentado de 18 a 65 el número de plazas.Valadez ha señalado que las obras para la creación del centro han contado con una subvención de la Junta de Andalucía de 114.772,20 euros, el 89% de la inversión, mientras que el Consistorio ha sufragado el 11% restante, 14.510,82 euros. “Esto ha posibilitado dotar a las instalaciones de mayor contenido y actividades, como proyecciones y cuentacuentos, y ayudará a hacer de los niños ciudadanos críticos, libres y responsables”, ha indicado el primer edil. Además, el regidor ha afi rmado que el Ayuntamiento “seguirá destinando recursos para fomentarlo, e incluso permitirá la ampliación del horario de apertura de la biblioteca en fi n de semana para facilitar el acceso a los pequeños y a sus padres”.Cabrera, por su parte, ha declarado

Lindo, autora de grandes éxitos de literatura infantiles como “Manolito Gafotas”, ha donado una colección con todos sus cuentos para las estanterías del centro.El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha invertido un total de 129.283,02 euros para la dotación bibliográfi ca y mobiliario de las bibliotecas infantil y de adultos; de esta cantidad, 36.441,83 euros corresponden a dotación bibliográfi ca de ambas bibliotecas, mientras que 74.913, 90 euros se han destinado a mobiliario de la biblioteca de adultos, y 17.927,29 a la biblioteca infantil.Tras la ampliación de la biblioteca de adultos, el pasado año, con una sala de estudios, y cabida para 221 usuarios, la delegación de Cultura ha triplicado la superfi cie de la biblioteca infantil, pasando de 53 a 190 metros cuadrados.

The Mayor of Estepona, David Valadez, and the Culture Councillor, Silvia Cabrera, recently opened the children’s library “Elvira Lindo”, situated in the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre.The new library facility has three distinct areas: a computer suite with six terminals with internet connection, there is also WiFi access available; the library; and the play area, which has increased space from 18 children to the current 65 places.The majority of the funding for this state-of-the-art facility has come from the regional government which contributed 114,772 euros, with the local coffers providing the balance of just over 14.5 thousand euros for the works which took about 2 months to complete. The library has more than tripled its size and can now provide more content and activities, including screenings and storytelling, and there are plans to extend the opening hour to provide even greater access to children and their parents.The library has been named after the bestselling children’s author Elvira Lindo, who

is most famous for her “Manolito Gafotas” series of books a collection of which she has kindly donated to the library that now bears her name. Although the author was overseas at the time of the opening she sent a video message expressing her pleasure at giving her name to this valuable resource. There are plans for a series of events this June when it is planned for her to visit Estepona on her return to Spain.

Una vez cada cuatro años, además de las consabidas y esperadas rebajas de enero y agosto, aparecen como por arte de magia las rebajas de mayo. En esta ocasión, son más deseadas si cabe por lo delicado de la situación económica, pues de ellas dependen muchas ilusiones y esperanzas. En estas rebajas no podremos encontrar esa camisa, pantalón o abrigo que tanto nos ha gustado por un precio de locura, sino que encontraremos simplemente un gran elenco de ofertas personales. Cada uno se vende como buenamente puede y con los medios que tiene a su alcance. Afortunadamente, estas rebajas, que vuelve loco al personal, solo se dan cada cuatro años. Pero desgraciadamente como en anteriores ediciones, nos desilusionan. No encontramos nada atractivo o que nos convenza. Buscas y rebuscas entre todos los puestos, y solo hayas humo y proposiciones vanas nada interesantes. Como técnica de venta usan la mejor de sus sonrisas, la mano en el hombro, la copa en el bar, el falso interés por tu situación… pero sobre todo la descalifi cación de la competencia y la promesa. Técnicas ya muy viejas y desgastadas que no consiguen ni por asomo el objetivo deseado, la captura del voto del incauto o infeliz.El mercadillo bulle más y más conforme se acerca a su fecha de cierre. Los vendedores se ponen nerviosos, conforme ven como el público se aglutina pero no se decide por realizar la compra. Todos montan el mejor tenderete posible con el fi n de que te acerques al menos a ver la mercancía. En el puesto del PSOE nos encontramos con que se ha retirado mercancía caducada, o poco vistosa para intentar hacer más atractiva la venta. En el PP y ASM, todavía no han sacado la mercancía

y además no tienen claro que van a poner de oferta. IU tiene mercancía sufi ciente para la venta, pero están a la espera de pasar por los controles sanitarios que validen su producto estrella. UDM, juegan a más vale malo conocido… y confían en la suerte de que su producto se ponga de moda, como las pulseras de la Carbonero. Si miramos atrás, ya tuvieron esa suerte cuando vendieron falsas promesas bajo las siglas de PDEM. Y el resto de partidos, mucho más humildes basan su oferta en el precio, pero solo encontramosbaratijas sin certifi cados de calidad y con garantía hasta la fecha de entrada en el gobierno local.En fi n, un mercado pobre en cuanto a mercancía, ya que no hay mucho producto nuevo. Triste y apagado, en cuanto a la situación económica no permite a los mercaderes mantener el esplendor de sus tiendas como antaño. Difícil en cuanto a pronósticos, ya que el descenso de la población y el desánimo generalizado hacen presagiar una abstención alta, haciendo que la quiniela sea harto compleja. Una tarea muy ardua para aquel que resulte elegido, ya que la situación requiere tomar medidas que nadie, con ideas de continuidad, se atreve a asumir.Con independencia de que todos sepamos que tienen que ser llevadas a cabo. Pero todo esto no desanima ni por un momento a los mercaderes, que exponen en sus diferentes puestos la mejor mercancía posible a su entender y luchan por conseguir una venta a capa y espada.No importa la situación económica actual, ni lo complejo que todo sea, ni tan siquiera los sacrifi cios personales que muchos hacen, ya que como todo el mundo bien sabe, en el vender va la ganancia.

They all put on the best display so that at least you will come and look at their goods.On the PSOE stand they have removed some old and shopsoiled items so as to improve their chances of a sale. The PP and ASM still haven’t put out their merchandise and

it is unclear as to what they will be offering. The IU have suffi cient merchandise to make a sale, but are still waiting for a number of health checks to approve their star product.The UDM are working on the premise that it is better the devil you know... and are trusting to luck that their product will come back in fashion, a bit like coal bracelets.Fortunately we can look back at the false promises they sold under the PDEM banner. And the rest of the parties push their offers on their price, but all we fi nd are cheap trinkets whose guarantees expire on their entry into local government.In short it is a poor market in which there are few new products to excite us. The dull and lifeless economic situation prevents these merchants from maintaining their stores in their former splendour.It is diffi cult to forecast where the purchase will be made, as the decline in the population and the general lack of enthusiasm suggest that many will not make any purchase whatsoever.A daunting task faces those selected as the situation requires that action be taken that will make re-election in the future a diffi cult task. Regardless of this fact this action must still be carried out. But this doesn’t deter at this moment the merchants displaying their best wares in various locations in an attempt to secure a sale at any cost. The current economic situation is not important, nor the diffi cult political climate, nor the personal sacrifi ces that many have made, as the only profi t is in the sale.

Un total de 38.542 extranjeros podrán votar en las próximas elecciones municipales en la provincia de Málaga, el colectivo más grande son Británicos (18,225)según el recuento de electores realizada y publicado en el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE). Si ejercen su derecho, podrán ser un colectivo clave en los resultados de numerosos municipios, como es el caso de Estepona, Manilva, Mijas, Casares, o Marbella.Además de los residentes nacidos en países de la Unión Europea, los ciudadanos de Bolivia, Cabo Verde, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Islandia Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, Paraguay y Perú podrán participar en las elecciones del 22 de mayo, en virtud de los acuerdos alcanzados por España con cada uno de los citados países.La población de extranjeros empadronados en Málaga es, sin embargo, mucho más amplia. Concretamente, según los datos del Padrón municipal recogidos por el INE, en la provincia hay 275.027 ciudadanos procedentes de otros países, de los que 162.604 proceden de otros estados de la Unión Europea.

Tal y como apostilló la Señora Alcaldesa (IU) “en estos momentos de precariedad laboral, con un gran índice de desempleo, el Ayuntamiento debe dedicarse fundamentalmente a acometer obras públicas, puesto que de esta manera además de embellecer el pueblo y dotar de una mejor calidad de vida para nuestros ciudadanos logramos generar riqueza entre nuestras empresas, dar trabajo a muchos vecinos y mantener el optimismo en la población. the Port, the pedestrianisation of Calle Los Arcos has created a new area for relaxation and leisure which will have a dramatic effect on the general atmosphere.Finally the Mayoress and Councillor wanted to highlight the diffi culties in maintaining this level of improvements, but that “in these times of job insecurity, with a high rate of unemployment, the council has a duty to undertake public works which improve the town and provide a better quality of life, whilst also generating wealth for local business thus providing employment and encouraging optimism with the community. To abandon this policy would threaten the livelihoods of 600 families whose members work directly or indirectly of the town council, an act which would bring ruin to Manilva.

Diego Díaz reports on grants awarded over the past yearDiego Diaz, Councillor for Employment Development, has reported on the grants for the self-employed which have been processed by his department over the past year.The fi rst invitation for applications was made between 15 May and 15 June, 2010, which saw some 20 applications made, all of which were successful receiving an aver of 7,000 euros per applicant, and bringing more than 140,000 euros into the local economy.During September last year further applications were invited of which a total of eight were received and which are currently being processed.The next invitation for grant applications

La ayuda de mantenimiento es para personas que llevan más de un año de alta como autónomo y menos de tres. Los gastos que cubren estas ayudas son: la cuota de autónomo, coste del teléfono, alquiler, electricidad, coste de la asesoría de los últimos 6 meses, tal y como se ha informado en las notas de prensa enviadas en los ultimos días.Según Díaz: “consideramos que desde la delegación se está haciendo un trabajo serio, responsable y comprometido con la ciudadanía, ya que estas ayudas y subvenciones están sacando de verdaderos apuros económicos a muchísimas familias y por otro lado se abren abanicos de posibilidades laborales a corto y medio plazo”, fi nalizó.

Para atender a los vecinos dependientes del término manilveño, trabajan 60 auxiliares de ayuda a domicilio contratadas por una empresa malagueña, 25 en Manilva, y 35 entre Sabinillas, El Castillo y demás urbanizaciones. También hay un equipo técnico de servicios sociales, compuesto por psicólogos, educadores y trabajadores sociales. Paqui López, concejala de Bienestar Social y muy sensibilizada con estas personas considera que: “el servicio es fundamental en la mayoría de los casos, ya que facilitan y aumentan la calidad de vida de estas personas, que en el caso de no disponer de estos profesionales, no podrían sentirse útiles y sobre todo, no podrían atender el quehacer diario”, apuntó.

Three hours where they can assist with cleaning, preparation of meals, etc., tasks which are basic necessities.In Manilva a total of 122 people benefi t from this home support service, and in the category of boroughs with a population of under 20,000 makes it second only to Alora (125 recipients) in providing support to its needy.To maintain this service some 60 assistants provide home care, 25 in Manilva town and 35 in Sabinillas, Castillo, and the various urbanisations. There is also a social service team of psychologist, advisors and social workers to cater to their needs.Paqui Lopez, Manilva’s Social Welfare Councillor, notes that “this service is essential in many cases as the ensure the maintenance and improvement of the quality of life for these people, who would otherwise fi nd it diffi cult to manage”.

Manilva’s Environment Department has announced the opening soon of a new park area for local residents and visitors which will be situated to the north of the Princesa Kristina urbanisation.An area of some 6,000 square metres is being cleared and already local schoolchildren have been planting trees in the area. These trees

and shrubs include: palms, oleander, carob, mastic and nettle trees, all of which have been supplied from the Junta de Andalucia nursery.In the near future lighting, tables and benches will be installed to provide a place of relaxation and enjoyment for all the residents of Manilva.

New country park at Princesa Kristina

The municipality of Manilva has adopted a social aid plan, in order to reduce the council tax on certain properties for the next two years.

The benefi ciaries will be those owners of a single dwelling, which is for their own residence, as defi ned by tax legislation and for which the rateable value does not exceed 200,000 euros. (cadastral value).

An affi davit is necessary to show that the annual income of the household members 1. does not exceed 2.5 times the offi cial minimum wage.A certifi cate of registration for the dwelling for which the funding is being requested.2. A certifi cate to show that there are no outstanding bills with the town council.3. That the tax will be paid by standing order through a bank.4. The application period is from January 2nd until March 2nd of the same year.5. Should your electricity payments not be up to date and the service is disconnected, you may be faced with mayor problems and some expense. For properties which were built within the last twenty years the reconnection whether or not the meter has been removed is minimal. The diffi culties arise with properties constructed earlier. The electricity company will insist on a report from a registered electrician. Costs will depend on the size of the property and the condition of your wiring circuit. This should comply with today’s safety standards and regulations. You will also be asked for your title deeds and the license of fi rst occupation. The latter is very diffi cult to obtain as some of the homes implicated were built without this fi nal certifi cate. Records may be found in local town halls but for example in the Estepona area for any property built before 1999, this data is not on their computers database. Be prepared to sift through hundreds of hand written archives. This is where a needle in a haystack comes to mind. The civil servants will understandably not carry out this process for you.

Does your fi nca have its own private water well?Owners of country homes who have the luxury of well water on their land, must take into consideration that the water they are drawing is not theirs but a concession for which they should hold a current permit. This will allow the legal usage of the amount of water as stated on the certifi cate. In the past this law has not been very rigorously enforced. Nowadays with the updating of Spain’s communication system it is likely that you will receive notifi cation if you are not in possession of this license. It is also important to note where the structure is situated, usually found near a river or stream. The well must be located at a distance of at least fi ve meters from these waterways. You may be encroaching on what is known as a servidumbre. Notifi cations have been sent out to some owners who may be in contravention of this ruling. You may fi nd that you will be ordered to take on the very expensive option of drilling for a new water source. The department of the enviorment is more vigilant on this issue in years when the country is affected by a drought.

DROP-IN-CENTREAt 10 am on February 7th 2011 the doors of the charity’s Drop-In-Centre opened for the fi rst time. The Centre is open from 10 am to 1 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to offer advice, help and information to all older people who go along – it also gives older people the chance to socialise. Eileen Dry (President of Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva), was there to open up along with Bibbi Shorter who runs the Centre on a Monday. Vera and Richard Ivers who, with Eileen and others started Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva some 10 years ago, went along to congratulate the present volunteers on achieving one of the prime objectives set when the charity started.During the morning a number of people dropped in to fi nd out how the Centre would operate and what facilities it would be likely to offer. The Centre will now be the focal point of the charity – it is situated at 25, Calle Zaragoza, Estepona – a few yards from the Age Concern shop.

SHOPAge Concern’s charity shop is situated in Calle Zaragoza, Estepona and is open from 10 am to 1 pm Monday to Saturday. The shop sells quality items of clothing and bric-a-brac and is staffed each day by a happy band of volunteers under the direction of a Duty Manager.Since the Drop-In-Centre opened the Age Concern offi ce has moved from the shop to the Centre and has retained the telephone number of 951 318 234 for people who want help, advice and information. 24 HOUR KNIT-INYes, that’s right, Age Concern is holding a sponsored 24 hour knit-in at their Drop-In Centre at 25, Calle Zaragoza, Estepona from noon on Friday 4th March to noon on Saturday 5th March. Sponsorship is easy – 1€ a go to guess how many squares, in total, will be knitted in that 24 hours. Each square is 38 stitches by 38 rows. The Friends and Neignbours of Marina de Casares association is a group of local residents primarily, but not exclusively, from the Casares Costa area, comprised of over a hundred members 45% being Spanish and the rest English-speaking foreign residents.The club organises a wide range of activities such as free English and Spanish classes, painting lessons, dressmaking, dance and theatre workshops, trips and outings, lunch and dinner parties, golf, darts, pool and table tennis tournaments.The club is currently in temporary accommodation whilst their usual premises in the Marina de Casares Commercial Centre are being renovated, which is expected to be completed by the end of March.For more information, or if you wish to join the association, contact: maria.hammond@hotmail.co.uk

The key approach to managing this is through prevention.So what can you do to prevent infection?We all know that good hygiene is important. It is promoted as the key prevention strategy combined with avoiding contact with infectious people. However, avoidance is not always possible especially in families or schools. This article equips you with an additional prevention programme: healthy mucus!So what does healthy mucus do? 95% of our infections enter the respiratory tract through the mucus membranes of the mouth, eyes and nose. Healthy mucus stops bugs from sticking to the respiratory tract, stomach, intestines and lungs. It then binds to the bug and the ciliated cells push the mucus-coated foreign particles out. This all ends up with us blowing our nose or if the bug has managed to enter the respiratory tract our coughing up where they are swallowed or spat out.During this period we can enhance the capability of our mucus through the combination of good diet and supplements. A good diet should include nutrient dense whole-foods, keeping away from refi ned sugars and being well hydrated. Extra vitamins C and D can also help. All this sounds familiar. Debido a la creciente demanda de este deporte en la provincia de Málaga, hace ya varios años desde la Delegación Provincial de Málaga se decidió organizar una Liga Provincial en la que se englobara las escuelas deportivas, colegios y clubes de tenis de mesa de la provincia de Málaga para fomentar así esta disciplina deportiva principalmente en las categorías infantiles.Cada entidad podrá inscribir tantos equipos como quiera cumpliendo el siguiente requisito, que cada equipo tiene que estar

IV Liga Provincial Tenis de Mesaformado por un mínimo de 3 jugadores/as y un máximo de 6 jugadores/as y por un Delegado responsable del mismo.En la temporada actual se está desarrollando la IVª Liga Provincial, contando con la participación de los municipios de Cártama, Alh. el Grande, Archidona, Benalmádena, Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Mijas y Estepona. El polideportivo municipal El Carmen será sede de una de las jornadas que tendrá lugar el sábado 19 de marzo.

Due to the increasing demand for the sport of table tennis in Malaga province, the Provincial Sports Department has in recent years organised a league, which includes various table tennis clubs and schools in Malaga province, with a view to promoting the sport particularly amongst younger players.Each club or school can enter as many teams

of 3-6 players as they wish.The current league consists of teams from Cártama, Alhaurin el Grande, Archidona, Benalmadena, Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria, Mijas and Estepona. Estepona’s El Carmen sports centre will host the competition on Saturday 19 March.

El deportista local Rogelio Pascual López fue el mejor de los cuarenta y tres participantes en la primera prueba de la temporada del campeonato de Andalucía de escalada, modalidad bloque.La cita tuvo lugar en la localidad malagueña de Villanueva del Rosario el último fi n de semana de enero.En la jornada del sábado se llevó a cabo la semifi nal o primer corte, en el que Rogelio se clasifi có en tercera posición.Ya el domingo, los quince mejores clasifi cados disputaron la gran fi nal, donde el veterano manilveño se proclamó vencedor y por lo tanto, líder provisional de la clasifi cación general.

Andalucia plays host to some of the cycling world’s top riders when the 57th edition of the Vuelta de Andalucía – Ruta Ciclista del Sol gets underway on Sunday 20 February.This road cycle race, which traces its roots back to 1925 and since 2005 has been part of the UCI Europe Tour, is run over fi ve stages from 20 to 24 February with the fi rst stage being an individual time trial in Benahavis beginning at 11 am.Subsequent stages are: 2nd - Almuñécar to Adra; 3rd - Otura to Jaén; 4th - La Guardia de Jaén to Córdoba; and 5th Córdoba to the fi nishing line in Antequera.

El pasado fi n de semana ha tenido lugar la primera prueba de esgrima para menores de 10 y 12 años en el Centro de Luchas Olímpicas de Maracena (Granada).13 tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” tomaron parte en esta competición demostrando un gran nivel deportivo y sobretodo juego limpio. Todos los participantes disfrutaron de este día de esgrima en el que se consiguieron varios trofeos y medallas. En la categoría femenina de menores de 10 años Emily Wellington y Mabel Lozano obtuvieron sendas medallas de oro al igual que Mia Wellington de EDB de San Roque en menores de 12 años, que participó con los chicos en competición mixta demostrando un altísimo nivel. En categoría masculina Idriss Benjilali del colegio San José de Estepona ganó la prueba de menores de 10 años consiguiendo también medalla Jude Bolt y Lancelot Coué del EIC, Felipe Nule y Darío Esteban del SIS y Marcos Ocaña de la Escuela Municipal de Estepona.En la categoría de menores de 12 años de nuevo Eduardo Lozano obtuvo medalla de oro acompañado en el podio por Nassin el Jamali y Henry Shields que obtuvieron medalla de plata. Muy buena actuación de Alexander Boehme del SIS en su primera competición ofi cial que quedó a solo dos tocados de la lucha por

las medallas.En defi nitiva una gran actuación de los representantes del Club de Esgrima de Estepona que augura un fantástico futuro a los jóvenes participantes y enhorabuena a sus maestros Rosibel Vindel, Paul Holder y Phil Adams.El día anterior tuvo lugar en al misma sede la competición nacional de veteranos a la que acudieron Alberto Zerrada, Phil Adams y Paul Holder en su primera participación en esta categoría clasifi cándose entre los diez primeros del panorama nacional.

Estepona’s International Fencing Club takes 12 medals at the Andaluz Fencing CriteriumEarlier this month saw the fi rst trials for under 10s and under 12s at the Centro de Luchas Olímpicas de Maracena in Granada.13 members of the club took part in the competition demonstrating a high standard of profi ciency and above all a sense of fair play. All the participants enjoyed this day of fencing with many coming away with trophies and medals.In the women’s under 10s, Emily Wellington and Mabel Lozano both won gold medals as did Mia Wellington from EDB San Roque in the under 12s, competing against the boys in the mixed competition at the highest level.In the men’s competition Idriss Bemjilali from Estepona’s San Jose school won the under 10 category with medals also going to Jude Bolt and Lancelot Coué from EIC, Felipe Nule and Darío Esteban from SIS and Marcos Ocaña from the Estepona Municipal School

El pasado sábado 5 de febrero se celebró en Casares Costa Golf el 1º Torneo La Brasserie. El torneo contó con más de 50 jugadores, y el éxito de éste fue total, gracias a la gran variedad de trofeos y premios que cedió el patrocinador.A la entrega de premios, celebrada en la Casa Club acudieron 90 personas entre jugadores y acompañantes. Durante la comida organizada por Ronaldo y Anita, actuales gestores del restaurante que se encuentra en la Casa Club, los ganadores recibieron sus premios.En primera categoría el ganador fue Syd Walley, uno de nuestros socios más anti-guos, que a pesar del gran conocimiento que tiene del campo no pudo pasar de los 31 puntos Stableford.En segunda categoría, otro de nuestros socios, Andrés Muñoz fue quien se llevo la victoria con 41 puntos Stableford. En cuanto a la categoría de mujeres la victoria fue para Mary Mackay con 26 puntos Stablefords.Mención especial para Alonso Ramos, que logró un fantástico hoyo en 1 en el hoyo 15. Bola fi rmada que junto a los otros 3 hoyos en 1 que ya se han conseguido en este campo en competición, pasará a las vitrinas del campo de golf.Desde Casares Costa Golf aprovechamos la ocasión para recordarles que durante
