Why do we need respiration for life?  (Hint, what is the purpose of the respiratory system?)

* We need respiration to bring in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.

The Respiratory System

Parts and Pathway:The pathway for air:1) nose  the main entrance to the respiratory system2) pharynx  the chamber behind the nose and mouth3) larynx  also called the voicebox4) trachea  the tube leading to the lungs5) bronchi  2 tubes leading to the lungs6) bronchioles  small tubes, branching from the bronchi7) alveoli  small air sacs at the end of the bronchioles

What helps clean the air we breathe? Cilia and mucus

What makes the sounds that form our voice, and where is it located? Air goes through the voice box / vocal cords which vibrate in the larynx to form our voice.

What keeps food from going down the trachea? The epiglottis blocks the entrance to the trachea.

epiglottis

tracheaesophagus

How many alveoli are there in each lung? hundreds of millions

to the heartOnce blood has oxygen, how does it get to the rest of our body? Blood travels in veins to the heart, which pumps it to the rest of the body.

How does oxygen get from the alveoli to our blood? oxygen travels through the thin walls of the alveoli into a capillary

What surrounds each alveoli?  tiny capillaries

Other information:What makes us breathe in and out?  When the diaphragm contracts and pulls down and the rib cage expands, air comes in, and we breathe in.  When the diaphragm relaxes and pushes up, air is pushed out and we breathe out.

What affects our “respiration rate”?  What we do affects our respiration rate.  What controls it? The "respiration center" in our brain senses levels of carbon dioxide and adjusts our breathing.

Diseases / Disorders:What causes asthma?  An allergic reaction to dust or pollen that makes the air passages smaller and makes it harder to breathe.

Diseases / Disorders:What is emphysema?  What usually causes it? Emphysema is when the alveoli are damaged, making it harder for the lungs to pass oxygen to the blood.  It is usually caused by smoking.

What else can cause respiratory problems? How?  Harmful chemicals in air pollution can damage the lungs.

What other problems can smoking cause? It can damage the cilia so harmful deposits build up in the lungs, lung cancer, bronchitis, pneumonia
