✠ ANNOUNCEMENTS ✠ POETRY CORNERI COME, O MOTHER, TO GAZE ON YOU

The first spiritual relationship with theBlessed Virgin is simply a glance. I come solelyto gaze on you.

What sustains that glance is not anarticulated prayer but the song of the heart, which is given voice by love for Mary.

Praise precedes petition – indeed thelatter cannot do without the former.

Is this not the case when people truly loveone another?

It is noon.I see the church open,

and I must enter.

Mother of Jesus Christ,I do not come to pray.I have nothing to offerand nothing to request.

I come solely to gaze on you,O Mother.

To gaze on you, weep for joy,

and know this:That I am your child and you are

there.

I come only for a momentwhile everything is at a standstill,

at noon!

Just to be with you,O Mary,

in this place where you are.Not to say anything

but to gaze at your countenance, and let the heart singin its own language;not to say anythingbut solely to sing

because my heart is overflowing.

For you are beautifulbecause you are Immaculate,

the woman fully restored in Grace, the creature in its first honor

and its final bloomas it is issued from God

on the morn of its original splendor.

You are ineffably intact, because you are the Mother of Jesus

Christ,Who is the Truth in you arms,

and the only hope and the sole fruit.

–Paul ClaudelPaul Claudel (†1955) was a poet, a playwright, adiplomat, and a member of the French Academy.

You can also gaze on Our Lady at yourhome May Altar - can’t you? She will bringwisdom and peace with her good counsel.

The Head That Once was Crowned withThorns is one of our favorite hymns here, andwe often sing it at Ascensiontide, for its nextwords are so fitting: “is crowned with glorynow.” Our Lord has gone back to the glory ofHis Father’s right hand, crowned with glory. His Mother, too, receives a crown at this season. In fact, thanks to our schoolstudents, all of Our Lady’s statues are crowned with flowersafter the main May Crowning. This was our first outdoorMay Crowning. The beautiful Lourdes Grotto, even morebeautiful with its roses and decorations, seemed to beckon us,and so we went. The little ceremony went smoothly (no onefell in the pond!) and oh so touchingly in the Spring sunshine, summoned up for the crowning by last minute prayers. It wasa beautiful and memorable Sunday and I thank all who helpedmake it so. May the little one who crowned Mary persevereuntil they receive their heavenly crowns.

It is a Mexican custom to crown with flowers as well apriestly jubilarian for his golden ordination anniversary. Iwonder what kind of crown we could fittingly offer to Fr.Martin Stepanich, O.F.M., who this Tuesday, May 18th,celebrates his sixty ninth ordination anniversary? Thiswonderful priest, ever faithful to Catholic Dogma and theCatholic Mass, and having no truck with the Vatican IIchurch impostors in Rome, gives by this fidelity aloneeloquent witness to the purity of the orthodox faith. Inaddition, he still finds time – and energy! – to assist manyCatholics with his good counsel, support, and prayers. We arethe beneficiaries of his charity at St. Gertrude the Great, andowe him the gratitude of our prayers. Ad multos annos, dearFr. Martin!

For the rest, we all prayed and processed our little heartsout last week, and have now settled down to “just” thePentecost Novena each day, the always stirring chant of theVeni Creator. Pray for our future soldiers of Christ, and dustoff your own Holy Ghost sword, helmet and shield whileyou’re at it!

May Our Lady guide you.–Bishop Dolan

O My God! Deign to accept me everythought, word, and action, as a lovingpetition to Thy mercy in behalf of thesuffering souls in Purgatory, particularly––––. I unite to Thy Sacred Passion the trialsand contradictions of this day, which Ipurpose to bear with patience in expiation forthe sins and infidelities which retain Thychildren in the purifying flames of Purgatory.

✠ PEACE

Born from Above

It is not enoughto be born in the flesh;each one of you must be born again from aboveas I was.I invite each one of youto follow me, and to come to myFather’s table. But my way goes through death toself, through the crucifixion of everythingyou have received in your first birth.Everything must be transformedby being surrendered to me,so that you can receive it back fromme.

You had no choice in your first birth;I give you choice in your second.Everything surrenderedand then accepted back from myhands,is clearly a gift and not your own. That is the meaning of myresurrection.I have shown you the wayby giving my Spiritinto my Father’s handsand then accepting it backon the morning of my resurrection.

You cannot have peace in your heartsuntil you have been born again fromabove . And you cannot understand themeaning of peace until you have surrendered your wholelives to me and received them back as pure gift. You may refuse my invitationto sit at my Father’s table, and your worldly livesmay seem to be filled with meaning, to be more real than the livesof those who walk with me.But until you have experience the peace that comesfrom my Spirit within you,you do not know the meaning of true peace...

Peace

The peace our Lord came to bringwas dependent entirely upon aninterior state of soul, and was whollyindependent of external circumstances. These might be favorable or not, butthey could not enter into thesanctuary of the soul, its inmost anddeepest shrine, where the armed man, secure, kept his court in peace. Thepeace of the world meant that I had allthat I desired, the peace of Christ that Idesired no more than all I had. Thepeace of the world was largely in itscause negative. It implied the absence, the careful removal, of every form oftrouble, evil, distress, it was a peacethrough circumstance. But the peaceof Christ depended wholly, under thegrace of God, on the attitude of thesoul. It was built upon a firmdetermination of the will never to betroubled or dismayed. It wascompatible, with every form ofsuffering, with every privation, withfailure in every line of life; It wascompatible even with discontent - nay,it really necessitated discontent. ThePharisee is self-satisfied, but thePublican is never content; he realizesthe great gulf fixed between what he isand what he should be; he is alwaysleaving the things that are behind, andspurring himself onwards to the thingsthat are more excellent. All the saints, all who love justice and hate iniquity, must be for ever discontented, mustsee a great number of things ill-doneby themselves and others, and must belonging to restore all things in Christ.By prayer, example, encouragement, denunciation, we have all labored tobring in the reign of justice, yet areconscious of how much still remainsto be done. Yet despite this chronic-state of discontent, the heart should beat peace.

–Father Bede Jarrett, O.P.Father Jarrett (†1934) was a Dominican priestfrom England renowned for his preaching, hislectures, and his many books on theology andspirituality.

But those who have surrenderedeverything into my hands, will receive back all that they need;they walk with mein the freedom of my resurrection life;they ask and it is given to them;they knock and I open to them;if they are weary,I take their burdens from them;nothing disturbs their peace, even though they walkthrough the valley of the shadow ofdeath,

My resurrection is a sign of freedom, freedom from all worries and fromfear.I surrendered my Spirit to my Father, and received back new life, life that death can never touch again. My death was my final word to you;if you understand it and do it,then you will be free. When you receive every moment asgift, and keep back nothing for yourself, then you will know true peace, the peace that the world cannot give, the peace that only thosewho have been born again from abovecan ever know.

–Richard HarrisRichard Harris (†1993) was a convert toCatholicism and the father of six sons.

“He that dwelleth in the aid of the mostHigh shall abide under the protection ofthe God of Jacob: my God, in Him willI trust. He will overshadow thee with Hisshoulders; and under His wings thoushalt trust...He hath given His angelscharge over thee; to keep thee in all Thyways. In their hands they shall bear theeup; lest thou dash thy foot against astone” (Ps. xc 1, 4, 11, 12).
