What’s in a name?

On Friday 11th October I was well and truly ‘put in’ by Bishop Nick. What a great night it was.

Thank you to all who worked so hard to make everything happen. It all seemed effortless which is the sign of all the hard work that went on to make it so.

Thank you as well for all the cards, gifts and messages of good will that Charlotte and I have received since we arrived. They have all made us feel so welcome in our new community.

Having the garden ‘tidied up’ before we arrived was, I think, the single kindest act I have received in over 20 years of ministry. I really can’t express how much that meant to us.

The question I have been asked most often since I took up office, apart from ‘are you Scottish’ has been ‘so what is the difference between a Vicar and a Rector?’

I could give a long answer citing lots of ecclesiastical laws that have been passed since the reformation or talk about the different amounts of tithes that Rector’s and Vicar’s were entitled to in the medieval church but I think you would lose the will to live. The short answer is nothing. There is no difference whatsoever. Some parishes and benefices have vicars others have Rectors. I applied to come here as priest-in-charge (vicar designate) how or why I am now Rector is beyond me and as I’ve indicated above it makes no difference to anything. We will still live in the Vicarage and my email address has vicar in it.

My job here as a priest is to serve the people of this Benefice, all the people, whether you come to church or not. My job is to share God’s love with you all. To do that I need to get to know you all. As Bishop Nick said you can share your stories with me but you can’t share your memories. But over the coming years we can share new things and as the Americans say ‘make new memories together.’

Getting to know you and you getting to know me is the key to all of that. This will take time. Many of you will already have realised how hopeless I am at remembering names. I blame my time in the Army, all those years having soldiers names stitched to their uniform has made me become out of practise with exercising my memory. Age may also have something to do with this.

Meeting with you all at church and at other gatherings will help me to gradually work out who you are but the best way is for me to meet you in your own home and get to know you personally. So part of my working week will be spent in visiting you wherever you are. I’ll be working out a plan for this but if you would like to get in quick and meet with me please email or phone me and I’ll arrange to visit.

With my prayers and blessings for the years ahead

Stephen

Farnley Estate Young Farmers Club By Emma Goulding

Straight Back to it at Farnley Estate Young Farmers!

On 28th August at Farnley Estate Young Farmers Club we had our first meeting after the summer break. We went to Otley Auction for a mini rally. This was just our club and we took part in lots of mini competitions which were great for new members to get a taster of what Young Farmers is like. We had to throw hoops over a ring, guess the celebrity, feel what was in boxes and guess what the object was and judge hens, flowers and wheat. The results were: Juniors: 1st Theo, 2nd Josh Groves, 3rd Ana Bunton, 4th Sam Nickson, 5th Jacob Ryder and 6th Charlie Ryder. Intermediates and Seniors: 1st Emily Farrar, 2nd Billie Towers, 3rd Joe Groves. Under 10s and non-members: 1st Tom Driffield. Thank you to everyone who came and to the hen owner for coming from a distance.

On 11th September we went to Ainsty farm shop at Green Hammerton. The club really enjoyed this meeting and it was very interesting watching how to butcher a lamb and to hear about how the business started and some stories about experiences you have had along the way. Thank you to Stuart and Chloe for kindly giving up their time and for providing us with scones and drinks afterwards. We hope the public will continue to support local farm produce and your business remains a success.

Congratulations to James and Holly Swires on your marriage. We wish you the best and a long happy marriage.

On the 18th September we had our club AGM at Almscliffe Village Hall and were kindly joined by two county office representatives. This meeting decided who would be taking on roles this year to keep our club up and running. Our chairman stayed as James Driffield and our secretary as Jacob Ryder. Billie Towers remained as treasurer and Izzy Bush as minutes secretary. Our vice chairman is Joe Groves, press secretary Emma Goulding, programme secretaries Emily Bird and James Driffield, sports secretaries Joe Groves and Jacob Ryder and scrapbook secretaries Lily Hughes and Eleanor Ashby. Our club leaders are Ben Ryder, Matthew Farrar and Jim Roberts and our President is Anne Harrison. Our Vice Presidents are Julie Houseman and Dee Holmes. Thank you to everyone who has taken on a role

this year as it takes pressure off club leaders and helps us to work well together as a club.

On the 25th September we had a first aid demonstration at Almscliffe Village Hall. Thank you to Paula for coming and helping us to learn how to help people in difficulty. We learnt how to put someone in the recovery position, do CPR, help someone to recover from a seizure and stop an allergic reaction. We also learnt what to do if someone is choking. Paula made this interesting and we had a bit of fun despite this being a serious topic. This could come in useful in the future and is a good skill to have so thank you to everyone who came.

On the 2nd October Farnley Estate Young Farmers had a fashion show at Almscliffe Village Hall. We all had fun watching (and being) models for the Complete Clothing Company. Thank you to Anne Harrison and Nicola Driffield and everyone else who helped to organise this event which raised over £500 for the club to spend on venues and other costs. Thank you to the Complete Clothing Company for coming and getting us fashionable for autumn, the models, everyone who gave up their time to come on the night and to our audience for supporting us.

On the 9th October we went beef judging at Chris Bellerby’s Farm in Weeton. The results were: juniors- 1st Ana Bunton, 2nd Emma Goulding, 3rd Izzy Bush, 4th George Smith, 5th Sophie Dixon and 6th Jacob Ryder. Intermediates- 1st Joe Groves, 2nd Gemma Farrar and 3rd James Driffield. Seniors- 1st Emily Bradley. Thank you to everyone who came and gave us a good turnout for the first judging of the year, Ben Wynne for being our judge and giving us some good tips and Chris Bellerby for providing some brilliant cattle to judge and a lovely supper.

Next week’s meeting is a talk by Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue at Almscliffe Village Hall. This should be interesting so we hope to see plenty of members on Wednesday evening.

If you would like to join the club and are aged 10-26 please call Jacob Ryder on 07497 828065. Also on Friday 8th November is our club dinner dance at the Millstones. Please contact Jacob, a club leader or member for tickets. Thank you.
