Presidents’ Column

It’s hard to believe but the time has come to start preparing for 2018 elections. In this issue of the Ricochet you will see the bios for members who have decided to step up and serve our club. All members need to do their part by voting. Even if an office is uncontested it is still im-portant to vote. Our bylaws require a certain percentage of the membership to vote for the election to be official. The best way for us to maintain a great club is for every member to stay involved and informed. Please VOTE! It matters!

After serving four years as a Division Director and ten years on the Executive Board I have decided to step away from the Board for a while. I will not be running for office this year and plan on participating in more of the great competitive events offered at Rio. Over the last ten years we have accomplished great things at RSSC. We have completed several large projects that have improved our facility and enhanced the quality of the events hosted by all Divisions. We have im-proved our operating standards and worked hard to hire and train a first rate staff to handle daily operations. All of the things that were accomplished are the result of hard work by many people. The Board of Directors, Staff and many of our members have contributed their time and expertise to making our club the great place it is today. I want to thank all members of the past and present Boards, our terrific staff, and the many volunteer members who supported and assisted me during my tenure as your President. I am very proud of what we have accomplished together. I especially want to thank my wife Marge for her encouragement, support and understanding during the many hours I spent at the club. I have every confidence that RSSC will continue to be a great club far into the future. See you on the Range.

From the Historians Pen Strange 11 MM Rounds

A. J. Reeb who made guns many years ago in Germany made the gun I used for this round. It is a well-made piece though there is no engraving that is found on some. Typical of the day the hammers are hard to cock and the triggers have a heavy pull. I did a chamber cast and determined that it is a 11 X 60 Mauser round but 3/8” was cut off of the neck. I made a test round and it fired perfectly so I trimmed a bunch of cases for working up a load & the owner wants to hunt with it. It has provisions for a claw mount so when he has one custom made he can use a scope if desired. Since it shoots an 11-mm bullet big game at moderate ranges is a viable option. The rifling is good so I expect some good working accuracy from it. Naturally, we want to shoot this gun. The customer doesn’t want black powder which brings up another challenge. Is it safe to shoot with light loads of smokeless? Through various ways, I determined that it was. Since I have worked with similar guns and calibers in the past, I felt on safe ground working up a couple of loads. The two powders that I used are familiar to me as I have used both of them on many occasions in old guns. The quality is evident and the action is tight. In addition, there is enough metal around the chamber to give me confidence in the strength of the action. I have worked with a couple of 11 X 60 Mausers 1, was a double rifle that is quite old. Since this cartridge has a shorter neck, I reduced the powder charge by a few grains from the Mauser loads. The process is called extrapolation and should be attempted by very experienced reloaders only. I am happy with these loads as they give plenty of velocity without straining the old gun. These loads would be very adequate for deer and black bear at woods ranges. Once a scope is mounted, it will make a nice addition to any hunting rifle collection. The iron sights are not that good as they are small and hard to pick up. A little research from a German friend has probably come up with the proper name for this cartridge. It is an 11,03x50R Scheibengewehr an obscure round from the 19’th century. The picture closely resembles the fired cases I have.

By the way, the shotgun barrels are 16 gauge and we made some black powder loads using 1 oz # 6 shot. They shot well and the owner uses it for breaking clays with good success.

BIOS For PRESIDENT

Sue Little

My name is Sue Little and I am running for the office of President of Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club for 2018. After having spent a couple years away from a Board position and having fulfilled an obliga-tion I had during those two years, I am ready to again volunteer my time and energy to support a club that has given me so much enjoyment—competing, meet-ing and working with new and interesting people. Since joining RSSC in 2003, I’ve been active with the .22 Pistol Division as Director for 7 years and continue as a match director; was Board Secretary for

one year before being asked if I would consider the Presidency—fulfilling that office for 2015; and I was Chairperson for the Scholarship Committee for 6 years. Along the way I felt it was important to become a better shooter and continue to get training: Range Of-ficer certification (2005 with a Multigun Endorsement 2010) volunteering for several ma-jor matches; Certified Range Officer (2017); certified NRA Instructor for basic pistol (2016); and as President I initiated and helped facilitate the “Annual Desert Flower La-dies’ Day at the Range” in coordination with HerHandgun. Positive changes have been made at our range and with the facilities we have, and I want to be a part of that team instrumental in making continued positive changes. I would like to draw from the unique skills and talents of our membership—encouraging more people to volunteer. I would appreciate your support in the upcoming election.

Thank you, Sue Little

BIOS For VICE PRESIDENT

Jeff Kelley

My name is Jeff Kelly and I am currently the Vice President at Rio Salado Sportsman's Club and wish to continue supporting the Range in the office of Vice President. I am a Arizona Native, and started shooting at Rio Salado in the NRA safety course as a junior. I have been a member of RSSC for 20 years and currently am the Belt Fed Match director in the Full Au-to Division. I participate in many of the shooting divisions at RSSC including 3 gun, Pistol, sporting clays, high pow-er, 22 pistol and Full Auto. My board involvement has been assisting the new multi purpose building, and moving the division financials to an all digital and audible accounting system. My day job has been

with Honeywell Aerospace for 26 years working on Military and Commercial Propulsion systems. For 2018 I will focus on a plan to expand the range facilities for Pistol/Rifle bays. I would appreciate your consideration for the privilege to continue to serve RSSC.

BIOS For SECRETARY

Bruce Bilton

During 2017, I have enjoyed serving as a member

of the Executive Board in the position of Secretary dur-

ing the last 2 years. I have spent 40 years working in real

estate accounting and finance, semi-retiring a couple of

years ago. I have been a member of the club since 2009,

shooting primarily in the Practacal Pistol division and

have enjoyed shooting sporting clays over the last year.

My belief is that Rio Salado Sportsman's club is

the best shooting facility in Arizona. We work for the

members with the goal of making everyone's shooting ex-

periences SAFE, rewarding and enjoyable.

BIOS For EXECUTIVE OFFICER

John Brakeman

As an NRA Life Member who has 20 years experience planning, procuring and con-structing commercial and public facilities, I be-lieve that I have the background to be an effec-tive Executive Officer for the Rio Salado Sports-man’s Club Board of Directors. I’ve volunteered at NRA EVC events, am a member of the NRA 2nd Amendment Task Force and actively lobby for better firearm rights protection locally and nationally. I’ve always been a strong advocate of

the duty for all citizens to actively learn and train with firearms. RSSC has been a part of my family for years and I hope to be able to give back to the organization by serving on the Board in 2018. I’d be honored to be able to work as Executive Officer for RSSC Executive Board in 2018 implementing the new five year plan and additional range improvements. BIOS For CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

Debbie Keehart

This will be my final year to complete my term as Chief In-structor. The picture I’ve chosen to promote my candidacy is the last picture taken with my coach, mentor and friend, Roy. He passed away earlier this year. This last season as Chief In-structor will be a bittersweet one for me. I truly want to give it my all this year and dedicate my love for the shooting sports to Roy. He opened up a wonderful world to me. It’s now my job to carry on his legacy by sharing his knowledge, (now my knowledge,) to others. If elected one more time, I promise to share firearm safety, and education to as many people as I can. And continue to offer classes to those just starting out. Let’s continue to make Rio a great and safe range for all of us.

Very Sincerely, Debbie Keehart,
