FROM THE FAMilY
As 1979 comes to a close, several important changes are tak-ing place in the Ridgway clan. Doc and Pat, after weatheringa very tough winter, have sold their house in Cody and aremoving their headquarters to Tucson. Lane Drive holds manydear memories for all of us, and so the move certainlyevokes mixed reactions. The change in venue will be mostdifficult for Doc, closing a forty year period of service to andaffection for the Cody Country. One important consolationfor all of us is Doc and Pat's promise to spend May andSeptember in Sunlight. With that help, we won't stray too farfrom the tried-and-true ways.
On the other end of the continent, December will find Hapbeing married to Susan Widmark. Susan has already beenone of the ranch "family" members for years, working in amyriad of positions. Hap is certainly not alone in his anticipa-tion of the December event. Doc and Pat, as part of theirmove south, have already started introducing Susan to themysteries and vagaries of the ranch book and reports. As ifthat weren't enough, Esther Wagner, our illustrious cook, hasspoken frequently of her plans for taking advantage ofSusan's culinary talents (remember the packtrip gumbo fromfour summers ago). Susan is only starting to understand whatshe will have to do after she says "I do." We hope she won'tdiscover too much before December or she may shy like afrightened filly.
The Moores are becoming more foot-loose and fancy-freewith each passing year. This summer found the whole family
sailing north from Seattle along the Canadian coast. For-tunately they constitute a skilled crew for one storm wroughtincredible havoc on their vessel. And fortunately Cliff con-tinues to excel in the mechanical arts for the same vesseldeveloped a terminal case of engine fatigue. Somehow un-daunted by these sea-going woes, the whole family is head-ed to the West Indies before Christmas to take on the Carib-bean. We only hope the winds are fair and the vessel sound, for the Moores are expected in Boston for a Christmas withChip and Lisa, in Philadelphia for a Ridgway reunion, and inMontclair for the wedding-as soon as their voyage is over.(With these travel plans, is it any wonder Cliff has been in-vesting in Boeing stock?)
Chip and Lisa continue to thrive in Boston, pursuing their twomedical careers and raising their two children in one incredi-ble juggling act. They somehow squeezed in the annual visitto Sunlight, where their welcome included ten tons of hayand a wandering pig. Many years back, Chip had to track ourcrippled whistling swan half-way around Mount Herman, sothe stray pig proved but a minor difficulty. (We do wish wehad pictures of the "round-up.") Emily and Eli are alreadytaking tennis lessons (Wimbleton, here we come!) and ridinglike Indians (watch out, Cody Nite Rodeo!). Midst all of thesedoin's, Chip and Lisa are going to bring the whole familytogether in Wayland for our first shared Christmas in twelveyears. The inevitable chaos of a Christmas reunion will cer-tainly prove a fitting climax to a hectic year for the clan.

THE ABSAROKA TREKS
Not too auspiciously, the first Trek started from the ranch be-ing deluged by a three-day storm and the second Trek return-ed in the midst of one of our worst August storms in memory.Sandwiched between those trials, however, were two of ourbest trips ever. Geoff Flickinger took over the leadership ofthe Treks, but was ably assisted by our roughneck from Mon-tana, Alice Ponce, our Alaskan explorer, Henry Dykema, andour Harvard intellectual, Liz Bayliss. Several counselors joinedthe festivities: Mariana Whitney and Martha Bayliss. Theother trekkers were Mariana Stockly, Jeff Foreman, SheilaKinkade, Peggy Burchard, Paula Arnet, and Annie Faulkner.
We dan't knaw what they're doing either.
The Trek through the northern Absaroka's covered moreground than had been our wont in the past. Indeed, this har-dy group completed its trip only to return to the ranch andhike up to the packtrip for an evening reunion with the ran-chers. They did, however, eye the horses somewhat longing-ly before headin' back down the trail. The Beartooth trekkerstook things a bit more easily. Rumor has it that their lessdemanding pace had something to do with Geoff's sense ofdirection, but we have no confirmation of that. It is alsopossible that Alice's snow cone overdose caused somedelays.
Our Father. Give us this day our daily Quiche?

THE SUMMER OF 1979 WAS
For Linc, the irrigation projects and his "true romances" wereuph iII from the start.
Henry, after spending a summer in Alaska, returned toSunlight in his little "Toy" ota truck. Adorned by a Henry biltcamper, the truck was affectionately renamed "Little Houseon the Prairie" by Mr. Truckin Skoal Scout hisself.
Outward Bound trained and educated, Geoff was almostable to convince the Beartooth trekkers that he really didknow where they were and what they had to do to get towhere they were going when they were supposed to bewhere they were ....
For Snydely Whiplash Andrew, the summer brought thevisitation of an alien skin disorder. Some suggested it mightbe a mutation of the French Legionnaires virus.
Doug and Payson, picking up on our President's latestfireside chats, campaigned for reduced energy consumptionat the ranch by using the showers sparingly, very sparingly.
Lisa K. and Laurence, ever in the pursuit of scientificknowledge and biological understanding, dissected theferocious Sunlight picket-pen.
Jackson action?

Julie and Becky formed the Sunlight Tabernacle Choir and"harmonized" with every sound louder than a meadowlark's evening song. Sweet they were not, but truly distinc-tive.
John and Martha gamefully continued the Nobles and Bel-mont Hill rivalry all the way into the wilds of Wyoming. Atlast notice, the score remained tied.
Brooks brought the culinary delicacies of Elk Creek to newexotic heights by adding caterpiller au gratin to the dailymenu.
Eileen registered 3.7 on the Richter scale with her snore-induced landslide on the Grand Teton. Fortunately, everyonewas roped in.
AI ice, an undercover agent for Wylers, managed to get four-teen trekkers addicted to snow cones during her first summerat Elk Creek. The management has promised to pursue thisWyler-gate scandal to the ends of the Granite Peak glacier.
Actually this horse is stuffed.
Easy Tumbleweedl Laurence is watching.
.we use it for our action shots.
