Daugavpils, Liepaja, and Ventspils. In 2012 our University and Library will celebrate there 150th

anniversary.

The library's collection

The principal part of the library's collection comprises scientific books, textbooks, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, handbooks, periodicals, reference books, technical documentation, theses and manuscripts. Electronic resources are becoming more & more popular.

The subscribed and the trial access databases are available in the RTU network with authorization through IP addresses. Since academic year 2008 students and teaching staff can access these databases also outside the University, through RTU portal “ORTUS” – http://ortus.rtu.lv

Information Literacy

First steps in Information Literacy - Project DEDICATE 1998-1999

2 Information Literacy courses were designed

Information literacy course in Electronics (ILCiE) - course for the 2nd year undergraduate students (Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications)

Chemistry Information Literacy Course (CILC) - web-based course for the 3rd year undergraduate students (Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry)



Library offers Information Literacy courses, including lectures and practical workshops

Information Literacy courses are designed to meet the requirements of the following groups: New students Undergraduates and Postgraduates Academic staff



For New students Lecture for the 1st year students “Introduction to the

Library” since 2003 For 5 faculties Every year in September and October Two academic hours Content – library homepage, structure of the library,

branch libraries, holdings, opening hours, library services, regulations, catalogues, searching, subscribed and trial online databases, useful internet links



For Undergraduates and postgraduates Practical workshops of the usage of electronic

resources for the 2nd-3rd year students of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry Faculty (since 2000)

Lecture and practical workshop of the usage of electronic resources for the 3rd year students and postgraduates of Power and Electrical Engineering Faculty (since 2006)

Practical workshops for the students and postgraduates of other faculties on request



For RTU Academic staff Practical workshops

searching, evaluation Consultations on data input in RTU Scientific

Publications database ”SCIENCE” Face to face consultations on request Consultations by telephone, simultaneous

Every library user can get individual consultation on searching for the information in the Electronic catalog and databases in every service point

After completing the course students and teaching staff must be able to search Library’s online catalogue and electronic resources, including databases, books and journals
