MELBOURNE

WELCOMEWelcome to the lifestyle issue of The Right Place magazine. In this issue, we take a glimpse into the lives of Mirvac residents across Australia, from

families to downsizers; first home buyers to investors, and discover how their homes have become such an integral part in the lifestyles

they choose to lead.

MIRVACLIFESTYLES

This latest issue started off as a blank slate with the simple heading: ‘Lifestyle’. And it is a testament to the wonderful mix of residents across Mirvac’s portfolio that the edition has gone on to feature such a diverse range of individuals and families, sharing their stories about their projects and passions, hobbies and happiness.

We caught up with artist Demian Gibbins and his partner Victoria Davis, who not only live at Array, at Melbourne’s Yarra’s Edge, but have also established an exciting, vibrant gallery space in the building’s ground floor, experiencing the best of urban living with their two young children.

Over in NSW, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Tabet. The founder of urban development agency Left Bank Co, Michelle has lived all over the world and, together with her architect husband, is now proud to call Harold Park her home.

Security is important to the couple as their jobs often whisk them away on overseas trips at a moment’s notice.

“We love the privacy and security of the premises,” says Mark. “We can lock and leave the apartment while travelling.

“Presently, we are designing a one-off resort garment for Miss Cook Islands, Natalia Short. She will be participating in this year’s Miss World Pageant in Washington DC.

“We thrive on short notice and have a fantastic team behind us, no matter what the challenge.”

When Mark Victorsen and his partner moved into Wharf’s Entrance, an award-winning Yarra’s Edge waterfront

neighbourhood in Melbourne, created by Mirvac Design, they were looking for security and simplicity to complement their jet-setting lifestyle. What they didn’t bargain for was a home that makes them feel like they’re on a permanent holiday.

“Our company O&C Lifestyle takes us around the world,” says Mark. “This year we’ve had a photo shoot on the Cook Islands, a trip to Hong Kong and Shanghai, and three trips to Bali.

“Like many people, we are time-poor and our plan is to keep our living area simple, spatially speaking. Mirvac always produces high-end products and offered us an opportunity to try something new that suited our lifestyle.”

With its marina lifestyle, lush parkland, and north-facing city views, Wharf’s Entrance offers a distinctive lifestyle, just a short riverside stroll from the popular Southbank and South Wharf precincts. “I love the balcony – we are

always outside whether rain, hail or shine, day or night. It’s the most used room in

our place!”

“I always feel we are on holiday, watching the ever-changing river and city views from sunrise to sunset, and seeing the buildings

and bridges light up at night.”

A typical day for Mark and his partner begins on the balcony of their Yarra’s Edge apartment, where they sip coffee, take in the sweeping river views, and prepare for the day ahead. “I love the balcony – we are always outside whether rain, hail or shine, day or night,” says Mark. “It’s the most used room in our place!”

A healthy lifestyle is important to Mark, who makes the most of the inner-city location, where residents enjoy social clubs, playing with their dogs in Point Park and cycling or strolling along the promenade.

“I walk everywhere – the supermarket, post office, Myotherapist, and the bank,” says Mark. “I walk along the river for exercise and, during the colder months, I use the gym on level 4.”

With the city on their doorstep, fantastic restaurants, and shopping nearby, they both enjoy a glamorous, waterfront lifestyle.

“I always feel we are on holiday, watching the ever-changing river and city views from sunrise to sunset, and seeing the buildings and bridges light up at night,” says Mark.

With work taking them all over the world, the couple cherish the chance to relax and unwind in their Wharf’s Entrance residence.

What do they love most about returning home after a trip away?

“Knowing that I can finally put my feet up and stop,” says Mark. “Where else but on our balcony!”

“Mirvac always produces high-end products and offered us an opportunity to try something new that suited our lifestyle.”

You could think of Demian Gibbins and his partner Victoria Davis as the very definition of a stylish, urban couple. As residents of Array,

Mirvac’s newest masterpiece at Yarra’s Edge, Demian and Victoria live with their baby daughter, Evangeline and son Tristan, at the incredible tower that has redefined the Melbourne skyline.

At the moment, Victoria’s focus is on the children, while Demian, a visual artist, runs a contemporary art space on the ground floor of the building.

Living and working in the one location makes a lot of sense for the pair. “We decided to move into Array at the same time that we were setting up the retail space on the ground floor,” explains Demian.

It’s easy to assume that young families prefer the suburbs, but there’s a lot to be said for living in the heart of the city when raising a family.

Victoria says: “Being a mum of a new baby can be really quite isolating. But living at Array has given me the strongest sense of community that I have ever experienced. We feel very safe and very supported at Yarra’s Edge.

“We have all the facilities that we need within walking distance, including a wonderful park right next door. I also have the maternity and child health nurse just over the river. It’s comforting to know it’s just a very short walk away.”

Demian’s art space, Lorimer Gallery, also features a coffee shop called The Espressonist. “We’ve been told that we’re making some of the best coffee in the region,” he says.

It’s fitting for a gallery such as Demian’s to be located in a building that features a massive 20-module sculpture on its roof. Made of 65 tonnes of steel, the incredible piece of art was carefully positioned on

the rooftop of Array over 12 weeks and has quickly become a defining feature of the Melbourne skyline; unmissable for anyone glancing down Flinders Street.

Demian explains his work focuses on two things, urban landscape and portraits of people. “Generally, the way that a painting will unfold for me is that I begin sketching it up and then I do an underpainting, and then I move to mixing my colour and working on my palette. I look for a concept and then I build a body

of work or a series out of that.”

He says one of the most attractive features of Array at Yarra’s Edge, a project delivered by Mirvac Design, is that it gives him a real connection with the city.

“Living at an elevated perspective allows me to see the horizon, and that’s critical in my work. I see a landscape that reflects my creative process every day when I wake up. I immerse

myself in the city for the purpose of understanding my subject.”

The couple is one of the building’s greatest fans and will happily encourage anyone to consider living in such a convenient location.

Says Victoria: “There’s actually nothing that I can think of that we long for in Yarra’s Edge.”

3 Steps to

Happiness

Like Being On HolidayFor Brunetta and Simana Kami, along with their children Isaak, 10, and Karmela, 9, the wide open spaces at Brighton Lakes, Mirvac’s new residential community built adjacent to the Brighton Lakes Golf Course, at Moorebank, were the key drawcard.

Before they moved, the Kami family resided in a two-bedroom unit in nearby Narwee.

“We were looking to upsize,” says Brunetta, an accountant. The family now resides in a two-storey house, complete with three bedrooms, a study, and a double garage.

“We went from a shoebox to a mansion,” grins Brunetta.

The golf course, playground and swimming pool are added bonuses for this active family. Isaak and Simana say they are looking forward to taking golf lessons so they can take advantage of everything the local area has to offer.

For Brunetta, who had never set foot on a golf course before buying the property, just having the green outlook, tranquillity, and walking paths has transformed her life.

“It’s starting to feel like home,” says Brunetta, “but I still feel like I’m on holiday.”

The Kami family are not alone in their new found love of golf courses. Many residents who have never played a round before enjoy a golf course aspect.

Diana Sarcasmo, Mirvac General Manager of Design, Marketing & Sales explains why.

“Overlooking a professionally maintained golf course is very appealing; as humans we like to see social activity, it is relaxing to sit in the comfort of your own home and watch people be active, but it also creates a deeper connection with the community.”

For keen golfers, too, Brighton Lakes is a huge drawcard. The world-class, 18-hole course was designed by renowned architect Bob Harrison, also a lead architect for Greg Norman Golf Design for over 20 years.

Located by the George’s River, Brighton Lakes also has options for water sports devotees. The river is ideal for water skiing, jet skiing, boating, kayaking and canoeing making residents spoiled for choice.

The golf course, playground and swimming pool are added bonuses for

this active family. Isaak and Simana say they are looking forward to taking golf lessons so they can take advantage of everything the local area has to offer.

Lifestyle HACKS FOR NETTELS(People with Not Enough Time To Enjoy Life)

Dedicating time to the people and things that make us feel fulfilled is the secret to a happy life. Here are seven steps you can take today to save time and lead a more balanced life.

Outsource the cleaning and gardening. This will allow you to spend more time with the important people in your life, doing the things that make you happy.

1.

Swap tasks like babysitting with your neighbours so you can all enjoy the odd date night or child-free evening.

2.

Plan your meals for the week before you go shopping to save money, time, and stress.

3.

Start saying no: Before you say yes to an invitation or request, consider the effect it will have on yourself and your family. Say no, or delay, those things you really don’t have time for.

4.

Mind your thoughts: Wherever you live, you take your state of mind with you. Take care of your mental wellbeing through daily meditation, write a grateful list, or get out the crayons and enjoy some mindfulness colouring-in.

5.It might sound ironic, but when life gets too busy, simply stop. Go for a walk, play with the dog, or engage with your children. When you return to your to-do list, you’ll find that you whip through it more efficiently because you took the time to press the re-set button.

6.

Decorate your home and feel good every time you step through the front door. Use removable wall decals instead of wallpaper so you can change the look of a room easily and as often as you like.

7.

Waking up to the sounds of kookaburras in the morning and taking long walks through lush landscapes can be a much needed antidote to the stress of a busy life.

Mirvac’s new masterplanned community Crest in south-west of Sydney has all the benefits of country living with handy access to the city. Residents can enjoy an easy commute to work while soaking up a bucolic country lifestyle.

Development Director at Mirvac, Nino Babani, explains that Mirvac residents are typically those who place value on having a beautiful home and a particular kind of lifestyle.

“They come for the solid values that Mirvac embodies,” says Nino. “They know we take care of the environment, prioritise open green spaces and create a haven in which the perfect life-work balance becomes a reality.

“They’re house-proud people who cherish the chance to live in a place where their children can run around safely, creating fond childhood memories, and where neighbours become life-long friends.”

Mirvac has over 40 years’ experience creating communities in some of the most beautiful locations in the country.

“At Mirvac we know how to balance building homes that are a private sanctuary, while at the same time giving residents easy access to employment centres, transport and retail hubs. Crest is no exception, it is accessible, yet hidden, from the pace of city life,” says Nino.

With almost half of the new community dedicated to open space and recreation areas, Crest residents will be able to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle. A spacious 0.6ha park forms the centrepiece, providing grassy

kick-around areas as well as a children’s playground. New pedestrian and cycleways will offer easy access to Crest parks and surrounding amenities.

Narellan Town Centre gives residents access to a vibrant restaurant scene and an 8-screen cinema complex. Other local facilities include Campbelltown Performing Arts Centre and Narellan Library.

Today’s great creative storage solutions means you can have a beautiful home and still ensure it works for a vibrant family.

Let’s face it – most kids have a lot of stuff. Which means every home where children live needs to have fantastic options for organising their toys, clothes, shoes, dress-ups – everything kids need to be kids. Jen Bishop blogs at The Interiors Addict, the one-stop-shop for everything you ever needed to know about the latest in home décor. She is the expert when it comes to finding great storage solutions for active families.

“It’s a balancing act finding a solution that keeps everything looking neat and organised, while still having an enjoyable and real family home that works for everyone. But it can be done,” says Bishop.

“As the saying goes, a place for everything and everything in its place. It really helps if you have a home for everything. It’s also important to teach your children to put away their own things. In an ideal world, we’d all have a play room or toy room where we could keep all of that kids’ stuff and close the door on it. But it’s not a luxury afforded to everyone,” she adds.

Top storage ideas for kids’ things Bishop says there are plenty of different storage solutions to suit every space and budget.

“I have baskets absolutely everywhere. Belly baskets are on trend right now. They are perfect for toys, little people’s shoes, laundry and whatever else you like.”

She says it’s also worth re-thinking how existing storage solutions like built-in wardrobes and shelving could be better used to accommodate kids’ belongings. It can also be an idea to invest in additional storage space like window seats with storage underneath.

“Don’t forget the good old fashioned toy box. I have a huge navy velvet upholstered one from Incy Interiors in my son’s room. It’s also somewhere to sit and read stories.”

The Play Pouch is a great option for things like Lego™. Says Bishop: “Simply scoop it all up and hang it on the back of the door at the end of the day.”

Interiors trendsWhen it comes to trends for kids’ spaces, Bishop says monochrome interiors are still popular.

“They’re easy to pull together if you’re not very confident with colour palettes and of course, they’re unisex,” she says.

Nurseries with a vintage feel and incorporating heirloom pieces are also in vogue. “You can give well-loved or second-hand pieces a new lease of life with paint and create something really special. For instance, you may want to use furniture from your childhood in your baby’s room.”

Stylish living… with children

Other fashionable colours include muted, muddy pastels – not as sickly sweet as true pastels but still soft and calming.

Above all, Bishop says having children should not mean putting away all your nice things.

“But maybe get creative about keeping them up higher and out of harm’s way. You can’t have a beautifully styled coffee table when you have a toddler, but you can get creative with your shelves and have art on the wall.

“There are also great lounges with removable covers – and baby wipes are the best all-purpose stain remover I know.”

Safety, of course, is a priority. “You may have to put away your glass-topped coffee table or easy-to-pull-over lamp for a couple of years, but it’s not forever,” advises Bishop.

“It’s a balancing act finding a solution that keeps everything looking neat and organised.”

Reimagined Urban Life:

Meet Michelle Tabet. When it comes to urban development, her expertise is unquestionable. She has lived in every corner of the globe – Europe, America, and Australia – and has seen the best and worst of city life.

HAROLD PARK: STREETS AHEAD

The past year has been a big one for Michelle. She founded Left Bank Co, a strategic agency specialising in urban concepts and was recently selected as one of the co-curators of Australia’s pavilion at the Biennale Architettura (arguably the most important event on the global architectural calendar). There were also two big personal firsts: together with her husband, Michelle moved into the first apartment she has ever owned; and they are expecting their first child.

“As soon as I heard about Harold Park, it felt intuitively right. It ticks all the boxes, proximity to transport

routes, high street shopping, the city and parklands.”

Our readers may not know you have an accent , but it is an immediate giveaway that you have spent time outside Australia. Can you give us a brief understanding of your background and how you came to be living at Harold Park?

I grew up in Paris, but then moved to New York to study Urban Planning at Columbia University. As part of my degree I took part in a student program run jointly with University of Sydney observing and helping communities in South Africa. My now-husband, who was studying architecture at Sydney Uni, also did the program. We met and I guess the rest is history. I now call Australia home.

Given your profession, you must be hyper- aware of what makes a great community. Can you explain why Harold Park works so well as an urban development?

There is so much to it, but if I had to sum it up in a sentence I would say planning and design. Exceptional planning makes for exceptional communities. As soon as I heard about Harold Park, it felt intuitively right. It ticks all the boxes, proximity to transport routes, high street shopping, the city and parklands. But planning isn’t enough, it needs to be executed properly. Mirvac’s reputation for quality convinced me that their vision would become a reality.

Can you please talk me through your typical day?

I don’t really have a typical day. I run my own business and have a diverse range of clients. Sometimes I work from home, other days I catch the tram to the city and walk to my shared office space in Darlinghurst. Now that Tramsheds is open you will often find me getting a coffee from Garçon.

Mirvac is enormously proud that Michelle and her husband (who is an architect), chose to buy at Harold Park, the company’s award-winning community in Sydney’s inner west.

We speak to Michelle about all things urban development and what it takes to create great inner city living.

“Sometimes I work from home, other days I catch the light rail to the city and walk to my shared office space in Darlinghurst. Now that Tramsheds is open you will often find me getting a coffee from Garçon.”

How has living at Harold Park changed your lifestyle?

I think the thing I love most about our new home, is that it is ours. It feels so grounding (and grown up!) to actually own property.

What have you done in terms of interior design and what is your decorating style?

Is it terrible to say we haven’t done a lot? We really liked the finishes of the apartment all we have had to do is buy furniture. The fact that both of us are in the design field means we have strong opinions on quality and functionality. We also really like to support local makers, so most of our purchases are Australian made.

You have a very exciting arrival planned for February 2017. How are you adapting your living space?

The second bedroom is slowly being converted into a nursery. We have painted a feature wall and begun getting rid of excess furniture. We have a lot of ornaments and keepsakes from our travels. Many of them are breakable, so I guess we will have to move them to the top shelf. The spear my husband was given while working in the Torres Straight will definitely have to be placed out of reach!

The Pool: Making Waves at Biennale Architettura 2016The Pool: Architecture, Culture and Identity in Australia is the companion publication for Australia’s recent exhibition at the Biennale Architettura 2016.

The Creative Directors of the exhibition, Isabelle Toland and Amelia Holliday (Aileen Sage Architects) and Michelle Tabet (Left Bank Co.) used the swimming pool as a lens through which to explore Australian cultural identity.

Designed to offer a richer experience of the exhibition (as well as a publication that stands alone), the book explores the relationship between architecture and Australian cultural identity through personal anecdotes about one of our country’s most significant public spaces.

Eight prominent Australians shared their pool stories: Ian Thorpe, author Anna Funder, Indigenous art curator Hetti Perkins, Olympian Shane Gould, environmentalist Tim Flannery, fashion designers Romance was Born, author Christos Tsiolkas and musician Paul Kelly.

“This publication is a compendium of our research and the stories our process revealed. We designed it to be accessible, visually appealing but also intimate in tone. While it should work as a standalone publication, we also wanted it to give visitors to the exhibition a deeper and more meaningful engagement with the themes we’re exploring,” the Creative Directors said.

Speaking at the launch, Ian Thorpe noted, “Australians have a very particular relationship with water, which is shown in many different ways through the pool as an important social space in our country. The Creative Team has done an amazing job at capturing that essence in this book, and the exhibition.”

Bought sight-unseenSo confident were first-home-buyers Amy Carseldine and Matthew Chesnais in their choice of apartment at Unison they bought their new home off the plan from their previous base in the UK.

Amy says the apartment’s supremely liveable features attracted the pair to Unison. “It offers a great mix of space, design and convenience. We were immediately drawn to the huge entertaining balcony and lifestyle, which complements the apartment’s central location just two kilometres from the CBD,” she adds.

The abundant storage and spaciousness of the apartment were immediate attractions. As were the incredible elevated garden podium and the waterfall edge pool, perfect for cooling down in the warm Queensland climate.

The ample outdoor spaces including the communal kitchen, entertainment hub and functional gym, all with breathtaking views, are also major drawcards.

Part of the Mirvac familyEric and Paula Steed are the lucky homeowners of one of the flagship three-bedroom pavilion apartments at Unison.

The Steeds fell in love with their new home as soon as they set eyes on the wow-factor views from their 20th floor position.

“The location is great; we’re now within walking distance to everything we love to do. Now we barely drive anywhere,” Paula says.

The couple is excited to use the outdoor facilities. As residents of the nearby Park by Mirvac complex, they have been so impressed by their current apartment they wanted to find another quality Mirvac development for their next home.

“We didn’t look at any other property. We really loved the quality of our home at Park and we wanted the same experience at our new home,” she adds.

Investment potentialPeter O’Keeffe has invested in the Unison development and believes it has many benefits.

“I’m a long-term real estate investor and I was attracted to Unison’s close proximity to the nearby Gasworks precinct, which adjoins the development. It’s excellent real estate,” he says.

Peter says Unison’s proximity to the city, and the ability to quickly access

arterial roads and tunnels to get out of town, also make it an attractive option for an investor.

“It’s the area that makes it so attractive as well. There are lots of open spaces and it enjoys a very pretty local outlook. I live nearby and can vouch for the location,” he says.

There’s something for everyone at Unison, whether you’re a first home buyer, downsizer, family or empty nester. Situated in such an elegant location, Unison is hard to beat for anyone looking for a Brisbane property purchase.

Benja Harney is a paper engineer. Working both in Australia and internationally, he is renowned as a pioneer in his field.

As a professional creative, artist and educator, over the last 12 years Harney has led his Sydney-based studio, Paperform, to develop a body of work that pushes the possibilities of the paper medium. Pop-up books, paper sculpture, installation, illustration, packaging, fine art, fashion, animation, set design – Harney makes anything and everything possible within this endlessly inventive material.

BENJA HARNEY PaperformPaper Engineer

What inspired you to begin working as an artist?During my studies as a graphic designer I stumbled upon paper as a creative medium. I was excited that building tangible objects could be considered part of graphic design language. I set about making paper engineering my career and founded my studio, Paperform, in 2005 after I finished my studies.

Tell us about your new pieces? The installation in The Finery has capped off a very busy year in the Paperform studio. We have undertaken lots of huge and complicated projects so it was wonderful to collaborate with design collective Amber Road and work on a contained and contextual project as a point of beauty for the new space. The outcome is superb – people always respond well to paper foliage.

Tell us about the colour palette? For our lush hanging paper jungle, we worked with a range of different greens to bring in that added sense of depth to the installation and complement the interior design of the show suite.

How has living in Sydney influenced your practice? The colour for sure. The light in Sydney draws out the colours and deeply inspires me. But also being Australian in general. I’ve worked all around the globe with different people and cultures and our easy-going, ‘can do’ attitude is a really positive attribute.

‘The light here in Sydney draws out

the colours and deeply inspires me.’

What do you love about your job? That I get to live out my passion every day in the studio. No day is ever the same as we are faced with solving numerous design challenges with each different brief or creative endeavour. I also love the aspect of collaboration in what I do. Whether with clients or my assistants – it is always such an interesting process with unique outcomes.

What item in your home could you not live without? The first item would definitely be the kitchen. I find cooking a most enjoyable way to relax and to get my feet back on the ground after a huge project. The second thing is probably my indoor plants. They make me happy!

ANYA BROCK, Artist

What inspired you to begin working as an artist?I actually used to work in fashion and found the commercial pressures in that industry somewhat stifling creatively. So I started painting and drawing in my spare time as an expressive outlet which quite quickly became a full time job. I think I also just have a compulsion to create. It’s so deeply ingrained in my identity that I feel totally lost when I’m not making things.

Tell us about your new pieces?I’ve just released a collection of painted pots and over the next couple of months I am releasing some small abstract studies and a range of coasters and melamine plates. Over the last few years I’ve worked on diversifying my brand to cover original paintings, paper and canvas prints and homewares.

Tell us about the colour palette? My colour palette has stayed pretty consistent since studying at TAFE 13 years ago – it seems I’m drawn to the same complementary colour palette instinctively. I recently released some abstract works that employed a far more analogous colour palette and lately I’m exploring more earthy and natural colours.

How has living in Fremantle influenced your practice?I recently moved back to South Fremantle from Bondi and have definitely noticed a change in my mindset and practice. Bondi and Sydney in general is so lush and beautiful but I found it too energetic and fast paced. Growing up in Perth conditioned me to flat, somewhat barren terrain and quiet – which I find integral to my creative process.

What do you love about your job?The freedom to structure my days however I choose is extremely important to me. Society’s traditional 9-5 work day is so far detached from how our bodies work that it’s counter productive. I also just love creating things – the energy generated from making things with your hands is so grounding and therapeutic.

What item in your home could you not live without?’There are many but from a practical point of view my kettle – tea is my lifeline. And from an aesthetic point of view, plants.

Credited for her sensitive and discerning use of colour, iconic Australian artist Anya Brock is best known for her signature bold hues, portrait- inspired animals, smouldering-faced girls and considered geometric compositions.

“Over the last few years I’ve worked on diversifying my brand to cover original paintings, paper and canvas prints and homewares.”

Artist Karen Morton is the maker behind Kaz Ceramics. Her work is contemporary and ever-changing, with the introduction of two ranges each year.

Her studio is based on the Mornington Peninsula where she, together with a small team of craftspeople, create bespoke tableware and small limited edition items of jewellery.

Her pieces are primarily made of porcelain and Kaz loves to complement her ranges with the addition of other contrasting materials like wood or leather. Truly made to be enjoyed and used every day, her pieces are ovenproof, dishwasher and microwave safe.

Tell us about your new range? The new range is called “Peony” and is inspired by the palette and shape of the flower. I’m always in awe of what nature can create; it’s grounding and inspirational. I find that each range simply flows from the last and I am always experimenting and learning.

Tell us about the colour palette? It’s simple, soft, subtle and calming.

How has living in Melbourne influenced your practice?I live on the outskirts of Melbourne. I simply love it here and couldn’t imagine having my practice anywhere else. Living out of the city means I’m very in touch with the natural surrounds. My studio has a large bay window that overlooks a beautiful bushed reserve. I watch the sun come up through it each morning with not another soul in sight; it’s a very inspirational space. The great thing about where I live is that Melbourne city is so accessible. I go there at least once or twice a week to source materials or meet clients. It’s also such a supportive and creative place. Yes, there are lots of ceramicists here, but we all support each other and I love nothing more than going into stores and seeing my work layered with other ceramicists’ work that has been made in Australia.

What do you love about your job? I love the challenges of what I do. I have just finished a fit-out for the new QT Hotel in Melbourne. It was a massive job for me with a very tight timeline, but seeing the work curated so beautifully in that space is very fulfilling. Having said that, I still get excited by people tagging me in their everyday pictures of my pieces in their home! Today I’m off to a kindergarten, where I will spend the day with 44 beautiful little children creating a piece of work with them, so every day is different. I love the calm of being in my studio everyday making, but also love networking and sharing my passion for my medium with workshops or public speaking.

What item in your home could you not live without? Good question…! My beautiful, very large dining table. It’s the social hub of my home where my family gather, where we tell stories, have heated discussions, play cards and during school holidays doubles up as a table-tennis table! It’s also, like so many other small businesses, where Kaz Ceramics started. It wasn’t until my husband threatened to kick me out because the table was so full of ceramics and clay that I moved into my own purpose built studio!

KAREN MORTON Kaz CeramicsFounder and designer

What inspired you to begin working in ceramics? I actually did my training in Ireland as a painter and studied ceramics as my sub! My love of oil painting was put to the side when I became pregnant and could not stand the smell of linseed oil and turps. It was really upsetting that the thought of doing something I loved made me feel so ill! As with most creative people, I couldn’t just stop making, so decided I needed to find another material to temporarily work with. Ceramics was a great option, as I knew I already had a love for it, and because of its natural composition, it was literally odour free. I haven’t put the clay down yet to pick up the paintbrush again!

“I’m always in awe of what nature can create;

it’s grounding and inspirational.”

What inspired you to begin working in lighting design?I’ve always had a fascination with vintage typography due to my upbringing in my father’s antique shop; I love vintage packaging and advertising materials. This led to a career in graphic design, which eventually led me to wanting a neon of my own. I researched neon but could never find any suitable companies that offered the high design that I was after. After looking into real neon I decided it was logistically too hard, so turned instead to LED neon and here we are.

Tell us about your new range? The new range is really based on stuff that people might like. I don’t have any official themes, colours or seasons running through the neons on offer. It’s really just an eclectic offering of different designs.

Tell us about the colour palette?I’m always inspired by bright bold colour. All colour is good so I don’t tend to hold back when it comes to pattern or colour selection. Having said that, the white neon, such as the cloud and the eyes, do suit a more Scandinavian or minimalist decor.

What inspired you to begin working in lighting design?I had a light bulb moment while exhibiting the glassware designs of our sister company, Bribe International, at Maison & Objet Paris trade fair in 2004. I placed a large glass vase upside down over my hand, held it up and stated, ‘Let’s get into lighting’. Initially, it was just an irreverent thought, but I decided to explore it and when we returned to Australia I designed our first light – the Lumi table lamp, which references a vessel within a vessel turned upside down.

We took Lumi back to Maison & Objet the following year and it attracted a lot of attention and interest. That was the start of this wonderful journey into decorative lighting.

Tell us about your new range? The unique beauty of mouth-blown glass is a central theme of our designs and I find it so rewarding to work with local Australian artisans so we can ensure the craftsmanship of each design is of the highest quality.

The new design in our range is the Melt wall sconce, which has a soft, sculptural form that resembles an unfurling flower and it washes surrounding walls with warm patterned light. It is available in pale hues of smoke and translucent grey and, for a touch of old-world Hollywood glamour, it’s also available in rich emerald green and peacock blue.

Another new design is the Domi wall sconce. It has an elongated mouth-blown glass bell-shaped shade that looks like it’s floating when the sconce is mounted on a wall. The shade is available in sheer translucent autumnal colours and the design is also available as a pendant with a slightly larger form.

Tell us about the colour palette?I tend to stay with neutrals and greyish tones as they are timeless and provide an elevated aesthetic. I also like to inject a fashion colour seasonally or twice a year to provide an elegant sense of drama. This coming season we are introducing an element of ‘Hollywood glamour’ through emerald.

NICCI GREEN, Articolo Architectural LightingFounder and designer

How has living in Melbourne influenced your practice?Even though Melbourne is a long way from design centres in the Northern Hemisphere, it is such a cosmopolitan and vibrant city and it reflects a European elegance. The cultural diversity is also a creative influence and this gives it a direct connection to the epicenter of design and architecture in Europe, the UK, US and beyond.

What do you love about your job?I absolutely love designing. I can’t help myself or hold myself back. Lighting design is particularly unique – it is not just the intrinsic beauty of the form that needs to be considered, nor just the function, which becomes complex when selling into different countries with different compliance laws. Lighting design provides a third dimension

where there is the opportunity for ‘shadow play’, as I like to call it. Many of our lights have superb detailing in the glass and, when lit, they cast striations, patterns and shadows on walls. I feel that this gives their surrounding environment a wonderful sense of soul.

What item in your home could you not live without? The people and animals make a house a home. They are definitely the most cherished ‘items’ in my home. But outside of them, I would have to say it’s my books. I collect books on design, architecture, colour, gardens, landscape, photography, graffiti, prose and quotes and sayings. Plus my garden – it brings so much joy and I love the layered plantings. It was designed by Myles Baldwin, who is the most extraordinary talent!

“I placed a large glass vase upside down over my hand, held it up and

stated, ‘Let’s get into lighting’.”

“I’m always inspired by bright bold colour. All

colour is good so I don’t tend to hold back.”

NATALIE JARVIS Electric ConfettiFounded in late 2015, after three years of research, design and development, Electric Confetti is the brainchild of Melbourne-based designer and illustrator Natalie Jarvis. Electric Confetti creates a range of fun, contemporary neon lights that have the look of traditional neon signage, reimagined as artwork for the home or workspace.

How has living in Melbourne influenced your practice?Living in Melbourne has encouraged me to get on with the business and open after three years of research and development. It’s a very creative and inspiring city. This gave me the confidence to go ahead with Electric Confetti and take the chance that people would love the designs as much as I do.

What do you love about your job?We have two young girls so having flexible business hours and a short commute is fantastic. Being your own boss has its benefits in that you never have to answer to someone. I also love the creative nature of it. We get some amazing ideas from clients and it’s truly rewarding turning their ideas into neon lights.

What item in your home could you not live without?Years ago, before children, we bought an original print from The Galerie in Fitzroy. The colours are amazing. Having said that, I also love the banana neon we have proudly sitting on our wall.

What inspired you to begin working in product design?I have always been passionate about all elements of design and how a thoughtful garden and home can make you feel. I started my career as a florist and loved every minute of working in the industry; it taught me a lot about small business and I met some amazing inspiring people over this time. However, after 15 years, I was craving more and wanted to explore my interest in product and interior design. Scotty and I would discuss things we wanted for our home and garden and then began bringing these ideas to life.

Tell us about your new furniture range? We are working on an extensive new collection at the moment that will be launched in 2017, but our current new releases are the Plush versions of our very popular Dreamer Couch. This was a long time in the making. We were always going to release the Dreamer with an arm and a higher back but it took a lot longer for us to realise. It satisfies the person who loves the look of the Dreamer but can get the real plush feel of a more traditional style lounge. I love the Plush but my heart is in the original Dreamer as I love low and firm designs when it comes to couches. We have recently been experimenting with raw brass and just launched a beautiful solid brass mirror – one of our weavers describes it perfectly as ‘jewellery for your wall’! It is a very special piece. To complete this beauty we have stunning solid brass hooks; they are timeless treats for your walls, and so practical.

Tell us about the colour palette you love to work with?We love all natural dye tones – anything that nature can produce, we love. Earthy terracottas, indigos, mustard, blush pinks, sand… the list goes on.

How has living in Melbourne influenced your practice?I am not really sure that Melbourne has influenced our practice. Scotty and I are influenced by a communal style of life; we believe sharing your space, knowledge, skills and creating a family of like-minded people helps to keep concepts, designs and business alive.

What do you love about your job?I love all aspects of my job but I guess the best part is seeing a design come to life, then seeing someone enjoying this piece and knowing that it will be a part of their life within their home.

What item in your home could you not live without?Plants. All humans and animals need plants to live.

HELEN BAYLEY LovestarFounder and designer

Founder and creative director of Lovestar Australia, Helen Bayley lives in Brisbane with her husband and three daughters.

What inspired you to begin working in product design?I was on maternity leave from my job as a solicitor and had started playing around with various design ideas. With what I would say is a “healthy obsession” with nature and the arts, my thought process was around trying to combine these two elements. I wanted to create something that I would want for myself; a piece that I would want to see on the walls of my home.Another consideration was the accessibility/affordability of the product. Using a vintage ceramic wall vase as inspiration, the heart vase evolved. Each piece is a well-considered, handcrafted, modern piece of art that is also functional. I think there are lots of people out there who are looking for beautiful, playful yet functional pieces for their home at an affordable price.

How has living in Brisbane influenced your practice?I love Brisbane. I would have to say that the mood is very relaxed and this definitely has had a tremendous flow-on effect with the business (in a good way!). It gives you space – mentally and geographically speaking – to take things at your own pace. My studio is on acreage, and I spend my workday looking out onto green pastures with horses and cows. Not a bad way to work and become inspired by nature.Design wise, I feel like Brisbane is really coming into its own with more creatives making a name for themselves at an international level.

What do you love about your job?I love that no two days are the same. One day I will be in the warehouse making confetti vases, and the next I will be on location shooting a new campaign. But most of all, that I am able to do something that I absolutely love – and that is to be creative. I feel very fortunate that this is my life and that I get to do it every day.

What item in your home could you not live without?I have two – my coffee machine and my books!

Say the word ‘penthouse’ and it’s likely to conjure images of the New York City skyline or the lavish surrounds of a top London Hyde Park residence. Now it’s possible to enjoy the same feeling in Australia at The Grand Pavilion Penthouse, which crowns The Eastbourne by Mirvac.

The 507 square metre residence, together with an approximately 301 square metre terrace, boasts three-metre high ceilings throughout, which, along with the 36-metre marble runway that acts as the pivot for the home, combine to give the penthouse the opulence it deserves.

Once inside, you’ll be drawn to the incredible panoramic views of Fitzroy Gardens and beyond. The home revolves around a central living area where family and guests can congregate. The kitchen and dining area are the focus, and eastern and western wings fan out from the shared family areas.

The kitchen has been designed as a work of art. While it boasts the latest in kitchen appliances and features, the utilitarian aspects of the chef-ready kitchen are cleverly disguised.

This allows for the elements to shine as sculptural marvels, including the purposely-rough edge on the island benches, a nod to the modern design aesthetic. The central living area also boasts not one but two fireplaces, one rendered in wood, the other marble.

The western wing contains the master’s quarters, complete with a huge master bedroom, walk-in robe, en-suite, study and retreat.

The eastern wing has been designed especially for family and guests. It has three bedrooms, each with their own en-suite, as well as an additional guest bathroom.

The attention to detail in the materials used in the penthouse’s construction is second to none. Real care has been taken to highlight the use of natural materials such as stone and wood.

The long-standing relationship of the architects Bates Smart to Freemasons Victoria means the attention to detail in the craftsmanship is second to none.

Sam Barber, the highly sought-after landscape specialist responsible for some of Melbourne’s most well-kept secret gardens, was secured to design the terrace. It features an 11-metre transparent pool and spa, from which residents can enjoy sweeping views across Melbourne’s city skyline and beyond to Port Phillip Bay.

ZUCCHINI HUMMUS

Makes about 2 cups. Prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients2 zucchinis, chopped½ cup tahinijuice of 1 lemon2 tbsp cold-pressed extra virginolive oil + extra to drizzle2 tbsp filtered water1 clove garlic, crushed½ tsp ground cumin½ tsp turmeric

Himalayan salt and ground pepper

Method 1. Combine all the ingredients in a

food processor and blend until smooth. If it’s too thick, add more olive oil or some water.

2. Drizzle with extra olive oil to serve, if desired.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with chickpeas. They are incredibly nutritious. But some people really struggle to digest legumes, so this is an alternative to chickpea-based hummus. Try it – it’s a total crowd-pleaser and great as a dip, pasta sauce or spread for toast.

EGGPLANT WITH TAHINI DRESSING AND POMEGRANATE

Serves 4 Prep time: 55 minutes, including cooking

Ingredients2 large, long eggplants¹⁄³ cup cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil + extra (to serve)1 tbsp lemon thyme + extra whole sprigs to garnishHimalayan salt and ground pepper1 pomegranate1 tbsp zaatar

TAHINI DRESSING4 tbsp tahini½ cup Greek-style yoghurtjuice of 1 lemon2 tbsp cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil1 small clove garlic, crusheda pinch of salt

A creamy tahini dressing enhances the eggplant’s smoky flavour, and the pop of pomegranate is out of this world. A recipe inspired by Yotam Ottolenghi.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C

(180°C fan-forced).

2. Cut the eggplants in half lengthways. Use a small sharp knife to make 4–5 parallel incisions in the cut side of each eggplant half, without cutting through to the skin. Repeat at a 90-degree angle to get a diamond-shaped pattern.

3. Place the eggplant halves, cut-side up, on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Brush the eggplant with the olive oil until all of the oil is absorbed. Sprinkle with the lemon thyme and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 35–40 minutes, until the flesh is tender and golden.

4. Meanwhile cut the pomegranate in half. Hold one half over a bowl, with the cut side against your palm, and use the back of a wooden spoon or a rolling pin to gently knock on the pomegranate shell. Continue beating until the seeds start falling between your fingers into the bowl. Sift through them to remove any bits of membrane.

5. To make the tahini dressing, whisk together all the ingredients. Refrigerate until needed.

6. To serve, drizzle the eggplant with the dressing. Sprinkle the zaatar and pomegranate seeds on top and garnish with lemon thyme. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil.

LEMON AND CREAM BARS

Makes 12 Prep time: 2 hours 15 minutes, including freezing

Saturday-morning rain makes me want to eat lemon and cream bars with tea, a childhood treat. I grew up in South Africa absolutely loving lemon and cream biscuits. As a little girl my cousins and I would wake up every morning in our holiday house in Plett and make tea with these biscuits. Here is a far more adult version.

Ingredients1 cup cashews

1 cup almond meal

2 tbsp psyllium husk

2 heaped tbsp almond butter

¹⁄³ cup desiccated coconut

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tbsp rice malt syrup

4 drops of vanilla stevia liquid

juice and zest of 1 lemon

¼ cup filtered water

shredded coconut and extra lemon zest (to decorate)

Method1. Line a lightly greased 20 cm square

baking tin with baking paper.

2. Blend all the ingredients in a food processor until combined. Using a spoon, press the mixture evenly into the tin. Sprinkle with the lemon zest and shredded coconut, lightly pressing them into the top of the mixture.

3. Freeze for about 2 hours, or until firm, cut into bars and serve.

Ingredients1 cup quinoa (red, white or mixed)

nori (seaweed) sheets

2 tbsp hummus or Dijon mustard

1 avocado, sliced

2 Lebanese cucumbers, thinly sliced

¼ red or white cabbage, shredded cos lettuce, shredded

2 carrots, thinly sliced

150 g tuna, chicken breast, lean meat or egg (optional)

DRESSING

1 tbsp tahini

1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar

1 tsp maple syrup

juice of ½ lemon

SIDES

pickled ginger

tamari

wasabi

sweet chilli sauce

QUINOA SUSHI

Serves 4 Prep time: 50 minutes, including cooking

A healthier take on traditional sushi. So nutritious and packed with flavour. It’s a total crowd-pleaser as a starter for a dinner party.

Method1. Cook the quinoa according to the packet

instructions. Drain and set aside to cool.

2. In a small bowl, mix together all the dressing ingredients and stir through the quinoa.

3. Place a sushi mat on a chopping board (it’s okay if you don’t have a mat – do this manually with cling wrap). Top with a sheet of seaweed, shiny-side down, and spread the hummus onto the seaweed.

4. Dip your hands in water and spread some quinoa evenly over the nori, leaving a 1 cm border along the edge furthest from you.

5. Arrange the vegetables in a row across the nori. Be careful not to overfill to avoid the rolls bursting. Add a protein, if desired.

6. Holding the edge of the mat with your thumb, lift it along with the filling and roll away from you. Hold the filling as you roll and gently pull the mat as you continue rolling. Once you have a neat roll, fold your hands over the mat to tighten the roll. Moisten the edge of the nori with water to seal.

7. Slide the roll off the mat and use a very sharp knife to cut it into individual pieces.

8. Serve with your choice of sides such as pickled ginger, tamari, wasabi and sweet chilli sauce.

The kitchen is, without doubt, the hardest working room in the home. Designing the perfect kitchen takes skill and scientific accuracy. It is also an art, requiring an eye for aesthetic beauty. Merging these two

disciplines is not always easy, and yet Mirvac Design consistently produces kitchens customers love. We investigate how.

It’s a cliché but the heart of the home, the kitchen, the place where most people spend the majority of their time, needs to look great, but also stand up to the chaos of life.

There is no point installing bespoke, hand painted floor tiles if the pooch’s food bowl is a constant source of spillage.

Add to this the complication that kitchens are expensive. Anyone who has built or renovated a home knows that a large proportion of the budget needs to be allocated to this key area.

For these reasons, detail-oriented planning is critical. The right design will grow with your family and save you from having to update when life inevitably changes.

Mirvac General Manager of Design, Marketing & Sales, Diana Sarcasmo, says floorplan, finishes and flooring are all key considerations when designing a kitchen.

“For Mirvac, our customers are central to the design process. Obviously the look of the kitchen is important, but so too is the longevity and functionality. It must be stylish and it must work.

“Our in-house designers ensure our interiors look contemporary, but will also stand the test of time.”

“Neutral palettes are classic and allow our customers flexibility. We ensure our kitchens have ageless appeal. On-trend colours can be layered through artworks, soft furnishings and other personal objects to create a more bespoke kitchen interior.”

“That’s why we often have areas of our kitchens where the space can be personalized, such as display shelving, where owners can add pops of bright colour. These can be easily updated or changed to suit a different mood.”

Fine linesThe slim profile benchtop, with chamfered edge, was big news at this year’s Milan Eurocucina. At The Finery, Waterloo, Mirvac Design specified a reconstituted stone benchtop which echos international trends yet at the same time is highly durable and able take the inevitable spills of family life.

Kitchen Fundamentals

The FinishesA neutral palette is imperative, colours and finishes that stand the test of time are a hallmark of Mirvac kitchens. The clever use of neutral textures, overlayed, creates interest, while at the same time lending themselves to accents of personality through art and accessories.

The FlooringAbove all else floors should be hard wearing, stain resistant and non-slip. This is not an area for porous stone.

The FlowNo matter how nice you make the rest of the house, the kitchen will always be a hub. It needs to be multipurpose; accommodate both numerous people while at the same time be functional for a sole chef.

The FeaturesHardwearing surfaces, an abundance of storage and excellent lighting are all standard features of a Mirvac kitchen.

Feature tapware Soft hued metals such as rose gold are a current trend

Tapware is the new SilverwareAccording to renowned demographer Bernard Salt, today’s households display tapware the way bygone eras displayed silverware. “At the turn of the 19th century Australian households had a ‘good room’ where they displayed the family silverware. Times have changed. Open plan living is de rigueur and the kitchen (often the heart of the home) is where people display their success.” Mirvac Design Senior Associate, Victor Wong, agrees. “Interior designers the world over are placing significant emphasis on tapware. The choice is huge. At Mirvac we incorporate a range of options catering to all tastes and budgets.”

Tomato sauce, ajax and lemon are not an interior designer’s usual tools of trade. Yet surprisingly they play a critical role in the design of Mirvac kitchens.

Before any material is specified for a Mirvac apartment or house, it undergoes extensive testing in the Mirvac Design lab. From shoe polish to soap, a vast range of common household products are applied to each surface. They are then removed at various time intervals: examined over extended periods. Surfaces that can not be completely cleaned at each interval are then deemed unsuitable for use.

Mirvac Design Senior Associate Victor Wong says, as well as looking great, a kitchen needs to work, be easy to clean, provide enjoyment and be able to cope with the rigours of life.

“At Mirvac we are well versed in the latest international and local design trends. We are constantly searching for and being acquainted with new products entering the market” says Victor.

“And while it is important to be aware of design trends, I believe our real skill and, what sets Mirvac apart, is that we translate these trends for real life.”

“Mirvac customers fall in love with the design and the schemes we create for each Mirvac project, but what is critical is that

Benchtops, walls and floors are the functional and aesthetic pillars of any space. They must look good, but they must also be the hardest working materials in a home. We talk to the experts at Mirvac Design about why rigorous testing is key to creating homes people love.

“At Mirvac we strive to make our kitchens suitable for life. We want people to be able to enjoy a dinner party without having to worry about a spilled glass of red wine on the kitchen bench,” he says.

“Life is messy and we truly understand that. Kids will bounce balls in the house, use crayons everywhere, friends will walk red dirt through the house. We ensure that our kitchens will stand up to theses everyday challenges.”

In addition to an innate understanding of “real life” Mirvac design must also be aware of international and national design trends.

There’s nothing quite like waking up to sweeping ocean views and breathing in the fresh scent of salty sea air. Legendary Australian cricketer

Graeme Wood, and his wife Angela, couldn’t agree more as they prepare to move into their Latitude Prima apartment, by Mirvac Design, on Leighton Beach in North Fremantle.

Graeme, who played 59 Tests and 83 One Day Internationals during his illustrious career from 1978 to 1989, is looking forward to joining Latitude’s seaside community, its vibrant café culture and outdoor beach lifestyle.

For Graeme and Angela, the decision to move to the coast was easy.

“We’ve always been beach people,” says Graeme. “With our children grown up we wanted to downsize and retire somewhere close to the coast.

“We already visit Leighton Beach all the time and can’t wait to make use of all the nearby bike trails.”

The couple was attracted by Latitude’s low-rise design and special features, such as its own retail outlets and central courtyards where neighbours can gather for barbecues.

“Latitude appeals to us because it’s only five levels, so there’s a cosy feel about the place and a strong sense of community,” says Angela. “Even though we’re not due to move in for another few months, we’ve already made friends with our neighbours-to-be at some of the Mirvac hosted events.”

Graeme and Angela are looking forward to enjoying meals on their Prima apartment balconies – yes, plural!

“We initially considered a three-bedroom apartment,” continues Angela. “In the end, we decided upon the two-bedroom as it has two balconies, both overlooking the beach.

Living in an absolute beachfront location offers the benefit of a short walk to the sand for Latitude residents carrying surf and paddle

boards, snorkelling gear or kite surfs.

“For us, the outdoor space offers more benefits than a spare bedroom.”

Latitude presents the best of both worlds: the ultimate in relaxed seaside living, with funky cafes just a short walk away in Fremantle and Cottesloe, and a rail connection to Perth’s CBD. Graeme and Angela intend to make the most of everything an active beach lifestyle has to offer.

“Being right on the train line will be a massive bonus, making it so easy to go into the city or to Fremantle,” says Angela.

“We plan to do more travelling when we retire, but ultimately, we’re looking forward to slowing down, exploring, and enjoying life at the beach.”

MO REto the story

“We moved to Doncaster three years ago and we have no regrets. It’s close to everything – shopping centres, amenities, schools. We have found Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to be the best location for raising a family,” says Gutierrez.

“Space was a great consideration – many homes feature established trees, which has great appeal to us. There’s room to run, move and develop, and my children can play any sport they would like to play in the local area,” he explains.

It’s not often you get the chance to live in a new community that looks and acts like an old one. Jose Gutierrez was one of the first new residents at Mirvac’s Tullamore development to recognise the site’s potential. Husband and father-of-three Jose says the decision to be a part of the community was a win-win for him and his family.

TULLAMORE DONCASTER, VIC

Gutierrez says he has bought properties in new communities before, but Tullamore – created by the team at Mirvac Design – has been a special experience.

“This is the best new development I’ve ever seen. Some developers just offer houses, making it difficult to envisage how your family could adapt to life there. But Mirvac helps to create a community. When we discovered Tullamore, we started building as soon as we could,” he adds.

“Some developers just offer houses…

But Mirvac helps to create a community.”

Perfect for familiesTullamore really is the perfect place to bring up a family. There are fantastic public and private schools nearby, from kindergartens through to universities.Keen shoppers are also well catered for with Westfield Doncaster only a short walk away. There are also plentiful yoga studios and medical facilities in the area, including the Box Hill hospital re-development.

The great health and medical facilities in the local area are fitting, given Tullamore is on the site of Sir Thomas Naughton Fitzgerald’s country estate. The 19th century surgeon was born at Tullamore in Ireland and lent the name of his former family homestead to his new residence in Australia.

More recently, Tullamore’s grounds were used for the former Eastern Golf Course, which relocated to the Yarra Valley before development began.

The new development retains much of the old site’s former charm, including the clubhouse and stables, as well as fairways and parklands for residents to enjoy.

As with many Mirvac developments, close attention has been paid to Tullamore’s green credentials. It has been awarded a six-leaf sustainability rating from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), a nationally-recognised enviro-development sustainability rating. It is one of the first developments to achieve this rating through the considered approach to material, energy, water and waste reduction initiatives on the site.

For instance, close attention has been paid during development to minimise earthworks and there is a system on-site for capturing, treating and reusing waste water.

As the first residents excitedly prepare to move into Tullamore, it’s only a matter of time before the community is filled with the sounds of residents enjoying their new location.

Were Sir Thomas Naughton Fitzgerald alive today he would no doubt be amazed at how his former country residence has been transformed to be enjoyed by so many.

GO WESTWHERE

THE SKIES ARE BLUE

Few can resist Jason Jones’ latest culinary venture

Jason Jones knows a great opportunity when he sees one. The serial restaurateur – he also founded Melbourne restaurants Entrecote and Second Home, as

well as South Yarra’s Stables of Como along with his business partners Ramez Abdulnour and Raju Ghimire – has just opened Go West at Mirvac’s Woodlea development in Melbourne’s west.

In something of a first, Mirvac approached Jones to open in Woodlea’s display village. Opening before residents had moved in gave him the opportunity to establish his reputation in the area before the first sod had even been turned.

71 LIFESTYLE ISSUE 2017the right place by mirvac70  LIFESTYLE ISSUE 2017 the right place by mirvac

Page 38: the right place - Home | Mirvac€¦ · business and family home, all at Array. Author James Thurbor once wrote, ... BRISBANE PERTH MELBOURNE WELCOME Welcome to the lifestyle issue

Jones relished the opportunity to get his hands on an incredible greenfield site, saying, “Being involved from the very start of the build has enabled us to make sure the offering at Go West is in line with the growth of the project. However, I must admit, when we first visited the site two years ago, even I had to stretch my imagination.”

While this is a first for Mirvac, it’s likely to be repeated in new, upcoming developments since the venture has been so successful.

Go West takes its lead from stylish Scandinavian design ethos. Think rosewood and light woods, handmade light fittings, snowy marble, leather banquettes and denim cushions.

The café – described as an ‘eatery and tuckshop’ – is situated within Woodlea’s incredible adventure playground, featuring two flying foxes and a twisting slide. Inside, the eatery is spacious, with plenty of room for parents to manoeuvre prams – and kids!

Creating something unique in the area, Jones states, “We soon realised that the visitors and residents of Woodlea were happy to sit over a coffee or leisurely lunch, so we created a full à la carte menu.”

Full of good healthy fare, including eggs, pastries and quince porridge for breakfast, through to lunches of lamb gnocchi and macaroni cheese, there’s something for everyone.

Kids won’t be ale to go past the old fashioned sweets that line the counter, including Belgian chocolate crackles (no less), honey joys and musk sticks.

Importantly, the coffee is sublime and has quickly become the go-to spot for coffee-catch ups and quick takeaways. Kids are also well catered for with a range of old fashioned milkshakes and health-conscious patrons will enjoy the delicious smoothies that fly out of the kitchen.

The café – described as an ‘eatery and tuckshop’

– is situated within Woodlea’s incredible

adventure playground.

Every home located at Woodlea is within easy reach of parklands, with 30 per cent of the area open space. Bus and train routes are close by and the nearby Rockbank train station is currently being upgraded.

An important part of the development is a well-thought-out village centre, where Go West is located. Over time, the centre will be filled with a range of great shops you would expect to find in a suburban high street, catering for all the families that are readying to move into the area.

Jones continued, “I believe that Melbourne is so much more than its vibrant city life. The overall concept and level of detail that has gone into Woodlea make it a true community-driven suburb.”

The centre also boasts plenty of neighbourhood facilities. It will have health services, a public library and a gym. These features will help cement the community lifestyle, which is supported by regular events such as night markets. These occasions bring residents together, to form a group of likeminded people who share similar dreams and aspirations. It’s an incredible environment in which to live.

Go West is a great draw card for the local area and it’s just one of the many incredible features that make up this exciting new development. Woodlea covers every base; it’s a wonderful haven for foodies, sports aficionados and those who want to live in an up-and-coming development. It’s the blueprint for modern city fringe developments.

BIRDSOF AFEATHER

It’s almost everyone’s ambition to live close to the coast. For the Mitchells, Osprey Waters is a dream come true.

When you’re ready to retire, you want to do so in style. That’s exactly what Gloria and John Mitchell have achieved with their dream home at Mirvac’s

award-winning Osprey Waters community in Western Australia’s picturesque suburb of Erskine; minutes from shops, schools, transport links and the Mandurah city centre.

“I keep telling people I think we’ve found heaven here” Gloria says.

“My husband and I are so very impressed with this lovely area and the friendliness and happiness of the people we meet, who also live here,” she adds.

Evidence of the deep consideration Mirvac has taken for the residents is clear in the amenities the community boasts. There is a non-motorised vessel launch area, while those keen on fishing make great use of the fish and crab cleaning stations.

There’s also a range of fitness equipment throughout the ample public open space for residents who prefer to exercise close to home.

The natural bushland surrounding the area remains intact. Indeed, the fact Mirvac prioritised the foreshore and bush has led to a number of prestigious awards for the community.

Osprey Waters – named after the resident osprey’s that nest there – is proud to be the recipient of the 2016 Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Award for Environmental Excellence and the Russel Perry Award for Urban Development Excellence.

Judges praised Osprey Waters for being the best of the best and a development others should look to as an example of what can be achieved through exceptional planning and design.

For the Mitchells, this translates into an outstanding lifestyle every day. “The natural bushland has been protected and we can see nature’s beautiful playground in the plants, the estuary, trees and wildlife all around the community. We can sit on our balcony and see an osprey nesting just 300

It’s not just the ospreys that enjoy the 2,700 retained and planted native trees that surround the development. It’s also home to an abundance of wildlife including Carnaby’s black cockatoos and red-tailed black cockatoos.

Aside from the stunning natural backdrop, Osprey Waters also provides great opportunities for residents to remain active.

There’s something for everyone – no matter whether it’s young families enjoying a weekend barbecue, or couples like the Mitchells who are at the stage of life where they are looking to downsize to a stunning new residence in an unparalleled location.

“We love to ride our bikes and John has already taken the kayak out on the estuary and paddled around to Mandurah Quay for a coffee. We don’t believe there could be a better place to retire.”

Amie Coleman treasures her role as head concierge at Pier at Waterfront near Brisbane, especially when it involves organising travel itineraries and even helping clients to style their holiday wardrobe.

“Some of our residents were recently organising a trip to San Francisco and I helped them research different tours in the area. They had a great time, and when they came back, they told me all about their experiences,” she says.

It’s the little things that make Amie so highly valued in the role. Checking what the weather will be like ahead of residents arriving at their travel destination, when she’s received a request to help plan a holiday wardrobe, show her thoughtfulness and attention to detail.

Amie loves the fact her role is constantly changing. “It’s never the same from one day to the next. The concierge team are always on our toes, always doing different things. That’s what I enjoy about being a concierge the most.”

For Amie Coleman, head concierge for the residents of Pier at Waterfront,

no request is too much trouble.

“It really is a privilege to do my job and the residents love living at Pier, which just

makes coming to work even better”

A natural people person, she works for Cambridge Management Services, which provides building management and concierge services to Mirvac’s Pier at Waterfront. An eclectic group of residents call the luxe building home, including a mix of professionals, retirees and semi-retirees and young families.

The building management and concierge teams work collaboratively to ensure residents experience a five-star service every day. The team is dedicated to delivering a first-class customer service to residents, ensuring no request is too much trouble.

“Residents don’t want for anything; our aim is to meet their every need,” says Amie.

The building is pet friendly, and requests often involve taking care of a resident’s much-loved pooch or pussycat. In fact, pets are treated with the same care as any other resident.

In the same way as you’d expect a hotel concierge to look after your every whim, the Pier at Waterfront concierge team will also pick up residents’ dry cleaning, organise newspapers, source hard-to-find theatre tickets and even book caterers if residents are having a party.

The concierge is also able to organise for residents’ cars to be serviced, washed or detailed. Window washing, cleaning and general maintenance are all taken care of, if residents wish.

And if they have been away on holiday or business the concierge will ensure there is a fresh sourdough loaf in the pantry and a litre of milk in the fridge.

“We arrange exclusive dinners for residents at local restaurants to help build on the community feel at Pier, and Christmas is a very busy period for us helping residents organise parties,” she adds.

Coleman says to be a successful concierge you need to be very fluid, have a sense of humour and the ability to diffuse tense situations.

“Discretion and diplomacy are definitely key skills of a concierge! It really is a privilege to do my job and the residents love living at Pier, which just makes coming to work even better,” she adds.
