Working towards a brighter future

A relationship breakdown can be a painful and worrying time of life.

At Letchers we have a committed and experienced team of family lawyers who will listen carefully to your circumstances and offer you advice and solutions that will meet your needs and expectations.

Our aim is to move you forwards to a brighter future by utilising the now various methods for dispute resolution.

We have both Collaboratively Trained and Accredited Mediation Lawyers, if that is the option you prefer.

leTcheRs sOliciTORsunmarried and living together? Over the last 20 years, cohabitation has become a popular alternative to marriage. Despite being so, many people remain unaware of the crucial distinction in law between marriage and cohabitation, it is still assumed that there is such a thing as “common law” marriage giving cohabitees the same rights as married couples. It often comes as a shock to be advised that cohabitee rights differ enormously from those of a husband or wife. Under the present legal regime, cohabitees who separate are not afforded the same level of protection as divorcing couples, in some cases following the end of a relationship, one person may find themselves in a vulnerable financial position and sadly we often have to explain that cohabiting couples have fewer legal remedies available to them. One of the key differences between cohabitation and marriage is the financial provision available on the breakdown of a relationship. A husband or wife can apply to the court for financial support from their spouse, which may include a transfer of property or ongoing payments of spousal maintenance. They can also receive a share of their spouse’s pension. At the end of a cohabiting relationship, the division of assets will largely depend on how the assets are held. It is often the case that each party

will retain their own assets and joint assets will be divided between them. A cohabitee cannot claim a share of their partner’s pension or claim maintenance for themselves, albeit they will be able to do so for a child of the relationship. When a cohabiting couple live in a house in the sole name of one of them, only the owner will have the right to remain in the property. The non owner may be able to claim an interest if they can show financial contributions to the property. The downfall is that such a claim can be lengthy and expensive and therefore places cohabitees in a weaker position than spouses who have a legal right to remain in the matrimonial home. Making a Will takes on crucial importance if you are not married as without a Will, your partner will not automatically get any of your assets. Your partner may be left with no option but to go to court to claim a share of your assets. If you are planning to live with your partner or you’re already cohabiting, you may wish to consider entering into a Cohabitation Agreement which sets out how property and assets are to be divided in the event of a relationship breakdown. This can save a great deal of conflict and unnecessary cost. If you are affected by these issues please call Ianthe Slinger, Michael Stocken, Melanie Glass or Sue Barnes on 01425 471424 or email [email protected] for a without obligation discussion.

RINGWOOD SOIREE 2013The Ringwood Soiree is held over two weeks in October and November by the Ringwood Musical and Dramatic Society to raise money for local charities. This is a risqué review best suited to adults only. The soiree started over 60 years ago at the Crown Hotel in Ringwood to raise money for the Ringwood Carnival and has remained a slightly naughty evening of variety, fun and laughter ever since. Shows are currently performing at the Ringwood School Theatre, Parsonage Barn Lane, Ringwood and are invariably a sell out. Next show is “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” commencing Wednesday 27th to Saturday 30th October at 7.30pm. Contact: Sam Coleman 01425 474353 www.rmds.org.uk

As in North Park there is a mixture of heathland and wooded areas but herethere is more of an open feel. There are extensive views across to the coastand beyond to the Isle of Wight, while inland a panorama of North Dorset can be seen.

South Park is connected to North Park by a bridleway of about 1/2 mile.

Matchams ViewThis relatively small area provides superb views across much of the River Avonas it winds its way southwards to Christchurch.

A waymarked trail of just over 1/2 mile takes you through tall conifers. Of particular interest is the embankment where the original railway from Ringwood to Christchurch (and later Bournemouth) once ran.

Who we areAvon Heath Country Park takes its name from the veryspecial heathland habitat. This could once be foundextensively in Dorset but has reduced in area by 85%over the past 200 years. Considerable conservationwork goes on, involving the RSPB, to restore the heath-land and enhance its value for wildlife. The Dartford Warbler and Nightjar are just two of theinternationally rare species that make Avon Heath theirhome. The Park is also a wonderful place for people, where visitors are welcome to explore and enjoy.

Where we areJust in Dorset, 2 miles west of Ringwood on the A31 dual carriage-way. Turn off at the Woolsbridgeroundabout.

TRINITY CENTRE – CHRISTCHURCH ROADTrinity Centre consists of the newly refurbished church, plus new hall and meeting rooms which are available for hire. Its imaginative design provides a light and airy space for worshipping, meeting, teaching and socialising. Walking through the main entrance into the Foyer, one is immediately struck by the amount of life and many activities going on. Pick up a leaflet to see all the activities offered to the Ringwood community, or take time from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to sit quietly in the church itself or in the small room set aside for prayer and quiet. The halls available at the Wesley Centre complement those at the Trinity Centre, providing accommodation for a wide variety of uses and groups. Both Centres have very adequate kitchen facilities for the preparation of refreshments and meals. Contact John Birch 01425 461440 www.trinityringwood.co.uk

Hampshire Paths Partnership has been involved in a new Healthy Walking initiative through partnership with the New Forest District Council and the NHS Primary Care Trust.

The purpose of this initiative is to encourage people to take regular exercise by identifying short circular walks close to residential areas which are easy to walk and follow.

Walking is a good form of exercise. Healthy walks make it easier to exercise as part of your normal day. Regular brisk walks will increase your heart rate, making you warm and slightly out of breath. Start slowly, enjoy the fresh air, and gradually build up to the recommended 30 minutes a day.

INDEPENDENT EDUCATION FROM 3-16 NEAR RINGWOOD

Moyles Court is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, set in 14 acres of stunning New Forest park land, between Ringwood and Fordingbridge. It is the only independent school in the area taking children from 3 years old right through to GCSEs, providing both continuity and security in education for families. After school homework clubs, sports and activities are available at no extra charge, Monday-Friday until 5.15 pm. The nursery is increasingly popular with local families; being part of the Early Years Pathfinder Scheme means the private school setting of the nursery is affordable to all. All nursery and Junior School children have access to a state of the art sports hall, ICT facilities, exquisite forested grounds and gardening plots.

Recent developments in the Junior School include Philosophy for Children, the International Primary Curriculum, and cookery as part of the timetable. The school has a good record of pupils obtaining grammar school places at 11+ and 16+. GCSE results are well above the national average. In June 2011 a Year 10 boy from Moyles Court won the Independent Schools Association National Essay Competition and two pupils one first prizes at the National Art Exhibition in November. An impressive range of sports and activities is a key feature of the school at all levels.

With one class per year group and an average class size of 15 pupils, the emphasis is on providing individual attention to children, allowing them to get the best out of their education whatever their interests, abilities and talents. Many children in the nursery have older siblings higher up the school, giving a strong family feel.

Taster days can be arranged by contacting the school office and Moyles Court parents are happy to give you their views of the school if you email [email protected] or telephone 01425 472856. The next Open Morning is on 2nd March 2013 from 10 am – 2 pm. Junior and Y7 Scholarships are available.

Contact us to arrange a visit01425 472856 or [email protected] Court School, Ringwood, Hampshire BH24 3NF.

Page 46: The Ringwood Town Guide 2013

By Tony WrightRingwood Town Council

The origin of Ringwood is speculation until further excavations provide more evidence. Documents state that in 955 AD RIMUCWUDE is mentioned which translates into the Rim of the Forest.

Ringwood’s development in those early days was dependant on the River Avon for its Mills and the Forest for the fuel for industry. The Domesday Book of 1086 indicates that there was a church and mill in the settlement.

Slowly the town grew until in 1226 King Henry III granted the Lord of the Manor the right to hold a market in Ringwood on Wednesdays, which of course still happens today

However it was not until Edward Vi’s reign that it was confirmed in 1553. The market became renowned as the main centre for produce sales in the Avon and Stour areas and for Forest ponies.

Added to this two “fair days” dates were also confirmed on St Peters Day 29th June and St Andrews Day 30th November

In 1752 when the calendar changed these dates changed to 10th July and 11th December and were highlights in Ringwood’s year right up until the 2nd World War

Ringwood became nationally famous in 1685 when the Duke of Monmouth was imprisoned in the house of that name in West Street after he had been captured in the Horton area following his disastrous defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor.

He was eventually transferred to and executed in London. Shortly afterwards

Dame Alice Lisle was supposed to have harboured fugitives from the Monmouth Rebellion in her house at Moyles Court and the subsequent trial at Winchester by the infamous Judge Jeffreys of the Bloody Assize, sentenced her to be burned at the stake but then King James II committed this to be beheaded. Her gravestone is on the right of the Ellingham Church door in the churchyard.

In 1725 the Ringwood Brewing industry took off with Carters Brewery making use of the ideal water from the Avon for making good beer. The town became renowned for the quality of its ales from the several breweries in the area.
