John appeals to the Pope
King John asks the Pope to free him and his heirs form the Magna Carta
On the grounds he signed it under duress.
The Pope declares it Null and Void
But John follows it anyway for the rest of his reign.
Henry III1216 John dies and his Nine year old
son Henry III becomes King.In 1217 Henry III’s regents reissue
the Magna Carta 1227 King Henry III came of age and
tried to rule without the “Common Council of the Kingdom”His lords led by Simon de Montfort
rebelled and he was forced to follow the Magna Carta
1272-1422Edward I & III, Henry IV and V who
were strong kings,
all used the Great Council to raise money for their successful wars, such as the 100 years war.
During this period its importance grew and it began to be called
Parliament
The Form of ParliamentBy the time of Edward III Parliament
had taken its present form
Two Houses:
The House of Lords --- to represent the Lords and Church
The House of Commons --- to represent the common people
The Wars of the RosesFrom 1455-1485, were a series of
Wars to determine who would be King of England
The Duke of Lancaster – a Red RoseOr the Duke of York – a White RoseDuring this time Parliament ran the
Kingdom and became powerful!In the end Henry Tudor became
Henry VII, the first Tudor Monarch
