TRANSCRIPT

Section 13: Pgs 265-End

The other men that were with the man and the woman. The Man alludes to these people when he has the discussion with the woman and her dying husband. He asks her where the rest of them are and why they left them behind.

The Man probably tells the boy stories from books that he remembers. The boy thinks those stories aren’t true. This is because a) he doesn’t know what some of the things are and b) there isn’t a whole lot of good in the world. Suggests boy is becoming jaded.

The Boy knows more than he lets the Man know. The Man is constantly telling him to be strong and not cry, while he himself is crying. It’s hypocritical and the Boy is calling him out on it.

Getting up in the morning. To the Man, everyday is a challenge. He is in pain, he’s tired, he just wants to rest, but he needs to be brave and keep going for the Boy.

They are leaving their old life behind. Things are going to change for the Man and the Boy. They don’t need the cart anymore, but now they will need something else.

On pg 276 the Man says to the boy, “you have to carry the fire.” He goes on to say, “It’s inside you. It was always there. I can see it.” The fire being the hope of the world. The man realizes that he can’t be selfish and kill his son. He needs to have hope that his son will find someone and carry on.

“You can stay here with your papa and die or you can go with me. If you stay you need to keep out of the road. I dont know how you made it this far. But you should go with me. You’ll be all right.”

The boy has a bright future with his new family. There is children for him to play with, a mother and hope for a new life.

The brook trout is very sensitive to pollution. If their lake, river, etc. is polluted, they will die off immediately. They rarely survive longer than 4-5 years in the wild.

Perhaps McCarthy is trying to warn us to be careful with our earth. It could be a warning to future generations to respect their earth, because it is a very delicate and precious thing and once broken, it cannot be put back together again… it can only change into something new.
