Cooperation in Salvation – Part 3
We have noticed in our previous articles that salvation is of God. It is by His grace that we are saved but that there is also something that we must do to re-ceive His gift of eternal life. The apostle Peter wrote in his second epistle, “For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning” (2 Peter 2:20). Peter spoke of those who escaped the pollutions of this world through the knowledge of Jesus Christ and were entangled in them again, declared “the latter end is worse with them than the beginning” (II Peter 2:20). The fact that those individuals were saved, but were now in a worse situation than they were in the begin-ning, is evidence that they needed to keep on working out their own salvation. How can we know if we are truly cooperating with God in working out our salvation? First of all there must be continual progress in our lives. The Christian life cannot be one that stands still or it will become stagnant and dead. We must be ever progressing, im-proving, and becoming more and more like Jesus. If we are not improving our selves spiritually, it is a sign that we are not working out our own salvation. We are to work out our salvation with “fear and trembling.” This is the fear of disappointing the One who has trusted us with His blessing of salvation. When Joseph was tempted to lie with Potiphar’s wife he said, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” We are to do all things without murmurings and disputing. Some people seem to obey God kicking and screaming. They are always complaining about what they have to do. This was the same sin that led to the deaths of more than 14,000 Jews who were constantly murmuring against God, His leaders and His will (Ex. 15:24; 16:2; Num. 16:41-49). We are to be pure and blameless. The word “pure” means to be “unmixed.” Thus the Christian is to be one of absolute sincerity. Blameless relates to our relationship to the world. We must live so that the world can find no fault in us. . We need to be ministers of salvation to the world. We are to shine forth as lights in the world. Mt. 5:16 – “Let your light so shine…” We must hold fast the word of God. This means that we are to be faithful to God’s word. But the marginal reading is “holding forth the word of God.” This would mean that we need to be teaching the word of God to other people. We must forever be about our Father’s business of teaching the lost world about Jesus. We were saved that we might help save others.
