SEPTEMBER 11, 2016

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 God became very angry with the Israelites for worshiping a molten calf and making sacrifices to it. The people had so quickly violated his commandments that he planned to destroy them. But Moses pleaded with God for mercy and God relented. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Paul considered himself a former blasphemer and persecutor, and expressed his gratitude for the mercy Jesus showed him. Paul felt that he was a perfect example of Jesus' patience toward sinners and his desire to reconcile them with God. Gospel: Luke 15:1-32 The Pharisees grew angry because of the Jesus' compassion toward sinners. In response, Jesus tells of a son who squandered his inheritance, then returned to his father and asked to be treated as a hired hand. The father rejoiced, angering his older and more obedient son. The father explained that everything he owned belonged to his older son; but he had to rejoice for the son who was lost and had been found.

THOUGHTS ON THE 9/11 CROSS

IN OUR CHURCH You may notice a small cross in the back of the

church. A responder and St. Pat’s parishioner, Mike Hanson, made it out of metal from the Twin Towers. The metal reminds us of the tragedy 15 years ago, and the fact that it is a cross reminds us of what our response, as Christians, should be.

A Franciscan priest, named Fr. Brian Jordan, was very active in the post 9/11 Ground Zero community. He tells the funny story of a high school football game in which he recovered a ball, that was fumbled, and ran for the goal line. Filled with adrenaline, he ran as hard as he could and left everyone behind. Only later did he realize that he had crossed the wrong goal line. Somehow, in the confusion, he got turned around and did not realize he was running in the wrong direction.

Reflecting on 9/11, it is important that we not get turned around, run in the wrong direction and carry the ball for the enemy. More often than not, terrorists win if they change us, make us more like them. The only way we can truly win is to remember who we are, stay rooted in our convictions and act in accordance with our God-given nature. The Amish in Pennsylvania and the Emanuel AME congregation, in Charleston, SC, are excellent examples.

Ten years ago, the Amish community of Nickel Mines, in Lancaster, PA, was rocked by the murder of five girls and the wounding of five more. The response of the Amish community was a model of Christian behavior. They did not seek revenge or blame the family of the murderer. On the contrary, they spoke of forgiveness, went to mourn with the family of the murderer and even attended his funeral. They remembered who they were and God's design for Christian living.

In a similar fashion, the Emanuel AME community knew that angry protest was what Dylann Roof hoped for, in his murder-suicide, in 2015. They responded as Christians and foiled his plan to start a race war.

Neither the Emanuel AME, nor the Amish, gave in to the temptation to respond with anger and revenge. They acted in a manner consistent with their belief in Jesus, who preached mercy and forgiveness. So, as we pass the 9/11 cross, let us remember all the victims, celebrate the courage of the responders and pray for a peaceful future.
