Living the Moment to the Fullest
Patience is a hard discipline. It is not just waiting until something happens over
which we have no control: the arrival of the bus, the end of the rain, the return of a
friend, the resolution of a conflict. Patience is not waiting passivity until someone
else does something. Patience asks us to live the moment to the fullest, to be completely present to
the moment, to taste the here and now, to be where we are. When we are impatient, we try to get
away from where we are. We behave as if the real thing will happen tomorrow, later and somewhere
else. Let’s be patient and trust that the treasure we look for is hidden in the ground on which we
stand.

Saint Vincent de Paul
The St. Vincent de Paul Christmas boxes were delivered on Sunday, December 18th. Thanks to our St. Cyril's parishioners who made this year another big success as we delivered to 24 families. The boxes included food for Christmas dinner and gift cards for each member of the family. Thank you very much for your gen-erosity during the Blessed Christmas season. Also, thank you for your donations to Bountiful Baskets last weekend. We so appreciate the parish support.
Soups Around the World
January 28, 2017 6 pm
Calling for Soup Cooks for our “Soups Around the World” event in January. We
are looking for 10 cooks this year. Also we will be featuring the Wine Wall so
start shopping for wine to donate. Again we will have our fabulous Raffle
Baskets, so consider donating a Raffle Basket. This year we want to feature more themed din-

OLIVE WOOD CARVINGS
Olive wood carvings will be available to purchase after all masses the weekend of February 11 and 12. The proceeds are to support Christian Catholic families in the Holy Land since it is the major source of income for them there. More than 75 families in Bethlehem Hand carved these items. They are very beautiful and unique items.( Nativities, Crucifixes, Rosaries, Statues. The Christian population has dropped from 22% to less than 2% in the past two decades. And this is a way to enable them to stay in the Holy Land.

When we meet John the Baptist in this reading he has already proclaimed that he was not the Messiah but the one preparing the way. The fourth Gospel is careful to present Jesus as distinct from and never subservient to John, even to the point of avoiding the mention of a personal encounter between the two. John simply appears as the forerunner of the one to come. At the same time, the Baptist describes his own faith experience regarding Jesus: “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove …and remain upon him.” According to Scripture scholar Juan Matias (El Evangelio de Juan), John’s description of that descent is like that of a dove seeking its own nest: John saw the Spirit come home to rest in Jesus. Because John recognized the Spirit’s presence in Jesus, he called Jesus the Lamb of God. That title, so familiar to us,
occurs only here in the Christian Scripture. The unique feature of the Baptist’s phrase is that Jesus is the Lamb of God. As this Gospel describes it, John the Baptist’s relationship to Jesus was always, “He must increase, I must decrease,” and John’s proclamation that Jesus came from God acknowledged that clearly. John recognized that his vocation was different from Jesus’.
While Jesus is the obvious subject of this selection, we might actually learn more about our vocation from John the Baptist. Outspoken and strong as he was, John knew and admitted his limitations. He said, “I did not know him,” and yet, he dedicated his life “that he might be made known to Israel.” That is a profound expression of humility. It presents John as a servant who knew what it meant to be an apostle. John was simply the one sent to open the way to more than he could imagine. This week’s readings lead us into the season of Ordinary Time with a reflection on who we are called to be as Christians. They remind us that being a Christian is never a solo performance. We are called together, formed by the word of God to become a light to the nations. Like John the Baptist, we are called not for ourselves, but to be able to point out the Lamb of God to others. When we know and accept that vocation, we can call ourselves the church of God in our own hometown and in our world.

5TH SUNDAY ROSARY
The Knights of Columbus continue to promote a National Program where local Councils
are encouraged to host a Rosary on the fifth Sunday of the Month. In 2017 the months with
5 Sundays are: January, April, July, October and December. The 5th Sunday Rosary
affords parishioners an opportunity to join together in a spiritual activity and promote
devotion to our Blessed Virgin Mary.
Father Joseph Saal Council #15640 will be hosting a 5th Sunday Rosary immediately following the 8am
Mass on Sunday January 29th 2017. We will have some Rosary pamphlets and finger Rosaries that we
will distribute free of charge.

ATTENTION: HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND PARENTS
On January 29th our students will be spending the first part of class viewing the Called to
Protect Program for Youth. There is a video portion followed by some group discussion and an
opportunity to apply the safety lessons viewed. All high school youth are encouraged to attend
this class which is only offered once every three years.
We will also be discussing Internet Safety and ways we can all enjoy Social Media cites while
remaining alert to those who might try to take advantage of us.

RACHEL’S VINEYARD WEEEKEND RETREAT February 10-12, 2017
Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat is a spiritual and psychological process facilitating grieving and reconciliation with God, yourself, your child(ren), and others.
