 T MAY seem to our membersthat I am talking about twototally opposite and differentconditions and it may ap-pear that I am in error when

say during these days

when so much is being saidabout the crime wave throughout Amer-ica and the rest of the world there isreally a religious wave that is far moreimportant and really more true in itsexistence.

First, let us look at this subject of thecrime wave. On every hand we hearabout it, and educators and reformersare taking every opportunity to nag atus poor humans because of the “terribleepidemic of crime throughout the land.” The sermons we hear on the radio and

in the churches, the editorials in reformnewspapers, the scolding preachmentswe read in tracts and leaflets, all ha-rangue us because we are all responsiblefor this supposed wave of crime that issweeping over the country. Reformmovements of all kinds have beenstarted, and the dear old folks who havenow reached the age of sixty or morelike to assure us that in their days therewas not so much crime, so much wicked-ness, so much evil, and a brazen lack of morality, as is witnessed today. I meetmany men and women of my own agewho try to assure me that in the days of their youth the young folks were sogood, so pure and innocent, and that to-day they seem to be possessed of thedevil, and riding headlong towardHades. I cannot help but smile when Ilisten to these pessimistic critics, for Iremember that in my childhood therewere things going on just as freely and just as widely as today. I often suspectthat those who talk to me about the

goodness of the young people in theirdays are trying to impress me with theirprotestations of youthful holiness. Allthat I can say to them is that if theysaw no youthful errors, no indiscreetacts, and no evil, it was probably be-

cause they wilfully shut their eyes to itor were so situated that they were neverbrought close to temptation. To provethat this is so, I often reach down to thebottom drawer of my desk and extracta newspaper or two of the reform typepublished in the years 1900 to 1901 andin 1890 to 1896, and show them edito-rials and comments bewailing in thesame language as used today the terriblesins of youth and the rapidity withwhich the world is going into the lapof his Satanic Majesty.

In talking with one of the high officersof the state prison board here in Cali-fornia, with whom we have many deal-ings in connection with our work for theunfortunate ones in prison, he said tome that the truth of the matter is thatthere is not more crime today than thereever was but there are more criminals.At first thought this seems like a para-dox. But if we analyze it a moment, asthis authority did, we realize how truehis statement is. He showed me in largeand cumbersome books the list of actsperformed by men and women today in

the natural or common course of theirlives, which are now classified as crimesbut which were not considered as crimi-nal twentyfive, thirty, forty, or fiftyyears ago. Then he showed me a list of one thousand prisoners with the offenseswhich they had committed written oppo-site their names. It only took a few min-utes’ study of the list to see that al-though there was one thousand criminalson the list, the things which they had

done would not constitute a thousandcrimes twentyfive years ago. In otherwords, if these same men and womenhad done twentyfive years ago, whichthey did but yesterday, they would notbe in jail. The same acts were per-

formed in the bygone days as are per-formed today, but in those days, theywere not crimes and, therefore, thosewho committed the acts were not crimi-nals and were not sent to jail. Eighteenof these persons, for instance, had passedor issued a check on three occasionswithout having sufficient money in thebank or any money at all to meet thecheck. Those of you who are over fortyyears of age know very well that in youryouth, you heard much about the cleveruse of checks by persons who were igno-

rant of banking laws or who tried to robPeter to pay Paul by issuing checkswithout sufficient funds but with thefond hope that something would turn upin time to meet the check at the bank.

 You know that such persons were criti-cized, that their credit was discontinuedat certain stores, and that they werelooked upon as being unreliable, but no-body thought of classifying them ascriminals. Today such persons go to jailand increase the number of criminals re-ported in each city and state. Twentyfive or more years ago they did not go

to jail and, therefore, did not add to thecriminal list. Today if a man is drivingan automobile while slightly under theinfluence of liquor he is sent to jail as acriminal. His act is not a new crime oran increased form of crime or an addi-tion to the crime wave of America. Thenew law, however, has made his act anaddition to the cri minal li st or to the li st  of persons who are criminals because notmany years ago many persons drovecars while slightly under the influence of liquor and, there being no law againstit, they never went to a jail, but mostoften just to the hospital. I could go onand enumerate similar cases and showthat of the thousands of persons in thisone jail in California, half of them wouldnot be there today if they had committedthe same act twentyfive years ago Therefore, we see that there has notbeen any extraordinary increase in actsthat are wrong but an increase of lawswhich turn men and women into crimi-

nals instead of mere wrongdoers. Wemust also keep in mind the increase of population and the increase of oppor-tunity for the commission of acts thatare now being called criminal. The com-ing of the automobile and its popular useby millions of persons, who years agodid not even own a horse and buggy, isresponsible for hundreds of criminalacts, which a few years ago would nothave been considered criminal. The sameis true with many modern forms of busi-ness customs and habits and features of our home life and daily intercourse. Sowe see at once that the prison represen-tative’s statement was true. Another im-portant matter to keep in mind is thefact that today we speak more aboutcrime and enlarge upon its commission

and expose more of it than we did inthe days gone by. In my early news-paper experience I recall distinctly thatit was one of the unwritten rules of theaverage newspaper in the average smallcommunity of America not to publishanything about an indiscretion or a  wrong act on the part of any of its localcitizens because this would appear to beunethical, unkind, and even undesired bythe readers of the paper. Today it is theaverage newspaperman’s business to fer-ret out every wrong act of every citizenin its community and feature it on the

front page.All of you who are over your youth-

ful days recall that forty or fifty yearsago if a young woman had an unfortu-nate alliance with a young man and achild was born out of wedlock, the wholecommunity did its utmost to cover upthe girl’s shame, to hide the incidentand keep the entire matter quiet, andthe local newspaper would have blushedwith shame to think of bringing any un-comfortable publicity to either the youngwoman or her parents and friends, by

publishing the least details of the inci-dent. Today, the papers are filled withfeatured stories of such incidents, andthe least of them is given an importantplace in the papers. To note the absenceof such items of news in the newspapersof thirty or forty years ago may make afew reformers and unobservant, piouspersons believe that such things very sel-dom occurred years ago, and that todaythere is a prevalence of it. Yet, we who

know, may smile at this thought for wecan recall in our own experiences of thepast the stories of similar incidents thatwere kept secret. Is divorce actuallymore prevalent today than it ever was,or does it only seem to be because even

the divorce of a little known person inany community is given considerablespace in a local newspaper, whereasyears ago such an incident in the life of the most prominent person in the com-munity would have been considered apersonal matter and left only to the localgossips to relate? As I take out of mydesk a paper published in a large cityof the east in 1890, I notice on the lastpage in between some show advertise-ments a nineline paragraph stating thattwo unknown burglars had broken into

and robbed the book dealer’s store on acertain corner and relieved his strong-box of nine hundred dollars. The head-line on this news item was set in smallletters slightly larger than the capitalsin the paragraph itself. If that incidenthappened in New York City, Philadel-phia, Boston, Chicago, or San Franciscotoday, it would be written up in teninches or twenty inches of space withlarge black letters and with a secondheadline calling the public’s attention tothe fact that crime is still on the increase.Like a bit of scandal or a morsel of so-licitous gossip that is deliciously tastingto the lips and tongue of some persons,so the subject of crime and the crimewave is overtalked and overempha-sized by newspapers and reformers to-day.

Considering the increase of popula-tion, considering the just and properfrankness of our public discussions, andconsidering the lesser degree of hypoc-risy and deceit on the part of youngpeople, there is not more crime generally

throughout the world today, but merelymore talk of it and more publicity givento it. There may be local epidemics ortemporary congregations of criminals incertain parts of the country at this time,

On the other hand, the world, andespecially the western part of it, is be-coming more religious, although it maybe evolving and changing in its theo-logical and churchly nature. While thechurches are decrying the lack of at-

tendance, and theological statisticiansare reminding us that orthodoxy isbreaking down, the fact remains that therecords of publishing houses and of li-braries show that more books are beingwritten, published, and actually read onreligious subjects today than ever in thehistory of the world. Think of dozensof books on the life of Jesus becomingpopular sellers! Think of waiting listsin the public libraries to secure booksdealing with religious and theologicalsubjects! Think of men and women in

social gatherings, at a club in odd mo-ments, at civic meetings, and in the ele-vators and lobbies of office buildings, oron the street corners, discussing reli-gious, philosophical, and theologicalprinciples! You know this is true as Iknow it. The churches may be moreempty today than they have ever beenin American history, but there is morethought about religion, about God, andabout man's relationship to God and thespiritual world in the hearts of men andwomen today than there ever was. Thevoice of God may have left the pulpitof the cathedrals of stone, but it isspeaking aloud, and clear, and distinctin the sanctums of the souls within thehuman breast. In railroad trains and onferry boats and in hundreds of placeswhere men and women are thrown to-gether and must be in close companion-ship for a half hour or longer, someonein the gathering eventually turns the dis-cussions toward the subject of religionand religious philosophy. Immediately,everyone is attention and there is neithera lack of sincerity nor the least degree

or irreverance in the frank and honestdiscussions and comments that areheard. The progressive minds of thewestern world are passing through aperiod of religious evolution. The changegoing on within each one may be moreor less unconscious to them, but it hasquickened their perceptions of greattruths; it has sharpened their keen in-tellects; it has brightened their logicalreasoning. And, today they want their

truth and nothing but the truth. Tothem, religion means absolute sincerityand an understanding philosophy of life,and an intimate contact with the Godconsciousness which they can appreciate

and comprehend. If they cannot find thiswithin the church, they will seek it else-where, and that is precisely what is tak-ing place with the average human beingin the western world today. It meansthat a new race of people with a higherand broader comprehension of the trueuniversal religion of mankind will evolve

and that the religion of the future willbe that based upon knowledge ratherthan upon faith or belief. Let us bethankful that we are living in the dayswhen this great change is taking place,

and that through our own studies, ourown thinking, and our discourses withothers we are contributing not only tothe advancement of others and to thegeneral evolution of religious under-standing but to our own knowledge andbetterment in a spiritual sense.

APPINESS, Peace, and Har-mony represent the threemost precious treasures of human existence, for withinthem may be found all elsethat man could wish for.

 These qualities are not unat-tainable even in the face of 

the most trying conditions, for, in real-ity, they are the ideal state of man andare absent only because they have beencrowded out by the misapprehension of life’s purposes and requirements. If wewould capture and thereby profit by thepresence of these much desired attri-butes, we must set out deliberately todo so, casting aside those qualities wefind within ourselves which are in oppo-

sition and thus admitting into the affairsof life this triad of positive, constructivephases, which are ever sought and sel-dom found. We may simplify our questconsiderably by reducing the three to asingle one, HARMONY, for it will beseen at a glance that neither Peace norHappiness could be within our graspwere Harmony missing. We cannotconceive of an instance wherein a favor-able, constructive condition may be pres-ent which does not possess a specific de-

gree of Harmony. As we examine fur-ther, we perceive that the absence of Harmony discloses the presence of theopposing or opposite half of this law,Inharmony.

Here is a highly interesting and de-cidedly important point, one so simplethat it seems incredible that nearly alloverlook the vital principle involved andthus fail to make use of it in the attain-ment of that which is earnestly desired. To gain a clear perception of the matterwe must enter into consideration of “Cause and Effect,” and the very ra-tional idea that the universe and all thatit contains is governed rigidly by law. There is not a single activity within theken of man which is not dependent upon

the existence and operation of a govern-ing law. W e often speak of luck,chance, and accident as though theseeffects happen of and by themselves in-dependent of any cause or control. Sucha theory is not by any means supportedby the evidence which is constantly be-fore us and it should be quite plain toanyone that if it had any foundation infact, then confusion and chaos wouldquickly overtake and disintegrate theCosmos and its structural completeness.

It would be useless to apply any knownformula or process to the solution of anyproblem of mechanics, engineering,mathematics, or other fundamentals, be-cause the results would always be vari-able and uncertain. This we know, be-yond all question of doubt, is not thecase. Those things which we ascribe toluck, chance, or accident, represent theoperation of law NOT UNDER-STOOD. Rather than to delve deeplyinto the mental realm and discern un-mistakably the underlying cause, wecasually explain many visible effects bymerely labeling them with one or moreof these three denominators.

We know that it is impossible to ac-cumulate electricity without fulfilling the

exact requirements which have been dis-covered and formulated through re-search and experimentation. Further-more, we are conscious that when theserequirements are complied with that wenever fail to obtain an absolutely definiteresult without any variation. Other lawsgovern the art of aerial navigation; auto-mobile construction and operation; radiotransmission and reception; the function-ing of the gas engine, the steam engine,of any piece of machinery of which wemay have knowledge, of mathematics;the rotation of the earth; the movementof the tides. In fact, there is not a singleactivity of any kind or description whichdoes not depend upon the application of exacting rules or laws of procedure.With this evidence before us, unmistak-able and unquestioned, how can weoverlook the fact that health, peace, hap-piness, success, harmony, and all otherattainments of life are governed by lawsand principles which are immutable andchangeless? Every discovery which ismade is first mentally conceived andthen made useful through further re-

search and experimentation in the for-mulation of the principles which under-lie. Any effect which comes into evi-dence must by reason of its manifesta-tion have a cause. It is true that manyeffects mystify us, especially when theyare of a purely mental nature, merelybecause we have failed to investigatecausation from the mental and spiritualstandpoint.

Our lectures are filled with experi-ments and rules for undertaking and ac-complishing many things, largely for thepurpose of showing you that law under-lies the whole fabric of human existence.

 To accept these experiments and rules asfact without diligently testing and ap-plying them, will give you nothing morethan an intellectual comprehension whichenables you to claim to know what an-other has found to be true but it doesnot give you personal realization of thetruth involved nor does it add to yourpower. The ability to utilize nature’sforces comes only to those who striveearnestly and faithfully to harmonizethemselves with the laws and principleswhich regulate the inflow of this vastand limitless force ever thrilling downfrom the Cosmic  seeking expressionthrough those channels which have be-come prepared for its reception. Somighty are these Cosmic forces that it isfortunate man cannot use them in theirstrength without a perfect understand-ing of their nature and purpose, forthere exists in all laws a high, positive,constructive potentiality, as well as alow, negative, destructive phase. A fit-ting example of this may be found inthe action of electricity. When utilizedalong constructive lines we derive un-limited good in hundreds of varyingforms, but if ignorantly or carelessly ap-plied, this same beni gnant agency  forgood becomes a devastating and resistlessly destructive element.

 You have heard it said that “Knowl-edge is power.” Unless knowledge isused by its possessor, it is of no valueand merely represents an accumulationof facts or ideas and this may be said tobe intellectual evolution. On the otherhand, wisdom is the realization of thevirtue or perception of the truth aboutaccumulated knowledge made evidentthrough successful application or dem-onstration. In other words, unless we canprove our assumption of knowledge tobe true, we have not attained to eitherwisdom, realization, or full understand-ing. Each weekly lesson is bristling withrare and priceless knowledge and it be-hooves us to give ourselves over to care-ful examination and devote ample timeand effort to the purpose of making it

our own. Many of our students are do-ing this very thing, as their letters clearlyshow, for their communications tell of most marvelous accomplishments in theapplication of the various laws to their

problems and affairs of life.Let us return to the opening sentence

in the second paragraph of this discus-sion. If we accept as fact that the uni-verse and all that it contains is subjectto law, system, and order, and not toluck, accident, or chance, it will be selfevident that any inharmony of any kindarising in our experience is due to themisuse or misapplication of the under-lying laws. Is it not then an orderlyprocess to begin to examine into thematter that we may determine just whatit may be that is causing the effect be-fore us? The fact of the matter is thatnature has a very simple and efficaciousmanner of informing us when we areout of harmony with her and it takes theform of a manifestation or effect pro-duced upon the body, in the mind, or inour affairs. The signal thus given iseither mild or alarming in accordancewith the nature and intensity of our dis-regard of her demands. This signal con-tinues until the necessary adjustment hasbeen made. The principle is so simple

and easy to understand that most of usare inclined to cast it aside and look forsomething much more complicated. Inferreting out the cause of our difficultiesthere is one general mistake that nearlyall make, which is, that they do theirsearching without instead of withinthemselves. In other words, we preferto blame others for our difficulties whichaffords an opportunity to fully justifyour own acts and attitudes. This is amost serious mistake and will never re-sult in an adjustment, for we are taking

hold of the wrong horn of the dilemma.Always look within and begin to makeyour changes and adjustments there andyou will find that your environment will

accommodate itself to your own changedattitude. It is important to remember,too, that conditions within yourself can-not be more than temporarily altered, if at all, through the exercise of socalled

willpower, for in the final analysis manpossesses no independent will of his ownnor any of the many other attributes of life to which he often sets up claim. Thatwhich man calls “W ill” is but a privilegeto use the laws and principles whichGod created and conform them to theirrequirements so that the Divine Willmay express itself within the man andin his affairs. If we possessed an inde-pendent will, we would express it inmany ways and success in any under-taking would be invariably assured.

Many would refuse to submit to transi-tion and through exercise of will wouldset it aside. Material possessions of allkinds would be forever held through theapplication of will.

Lei us not, therefore, make this seriousmistake of assuming independence andseparateness, but follow out carefully theprecepts which have been established forus and permit the Cosmic, the DivineWill, to operate freely through us know-ing that we have nothing of our ownbut that all belongs to the God who

fashioned and endowed us with HisSpirit, His Life, His Mind, and each of His attributes, that we might learn touse them in accordance with His Planand Will. It is God’s purpose that weshould “inherit the K ingdom,” but wemust prepare ourselves through under-standing for this may not be had by themere asking. We must seek it earnestlyand diligently and bring our desires intosubmission to the Divine W'ill, for this isthe price we must pay. Thus do we at-tain Peace, Happiness, and Harmony,and participate in the sweetness, tender-ness, and gracious and loving care of the God of our Hearts and come intothat ecstatic exaltation known only tothose who have found the way.

ANY of our oldest memberswill recall reading, in theyears gone by, an account of the experiences of our Imperator when he first wentto Europe and attempted tocontact the organization of 

Rosicrucians. The story of how he metone man here and another there, and

was sent from place to place withstrange notes and given peculiar instruc-tions and difficult things to do in variousparts of Europe in order to test his en-durance, his persistence, his enthusiasm,and his worthiness, always interestedthose who read the details and followedhis difficult trail from city to city until atlast he was permitted to enter one of theofficial buildings of the organization andmake his first real contact with the Rosi-crucian organization. Others since thenhave had almost similar experiences and

we have noted many times in the pastthat in some lands of the Orient and inmany jurisdictions of the RosicrucianOrder the inquirer is put to a series of tests and given a rare treat in the man-ner in which he is gradually allowed tomeet Rosicrucians of high position andmake contacts, which at the time seemedunimportant but later proved of greatvalue.

Now comes to us a letter containingin condensed form another story of suchan experience. This letter is written by

a man of high education and consider-able culture who has traveled a greatdeal and who holds the important posi-tion of national historian for the organi-zation of the Veterans of Foreign Warsof the United States. The writer of theletter is now a member of the AMORCand his letter is addressed to the Imperator recounting his experiences incontacting the Order. In presenting theletter herewith, the names of individualsmentioned in it have been changed, but

otherwise the facts are exactly as ourBrother wrote them. Here is the letter:

“In 1895 I became acquainted with John Jones while I was teaching in theU. S. Artillery School in New YorkHarbor. I also met Dr. F. S. Frank, thefamous author, at that time, and a num-ber of other prominent characters whowere interested in the educational work

being carried on by me. Mr. Jones hadbeen abroad many times in Europe andthe Orient. During our conversationshe had mentioned something of Rosicrucianism and stated that he had re-ceived several initiations. I did not knowthat he was a member of our organiza-tion here in America but he did explainto me that one of his first initiations hadtaken place in Bombay, India, and asecond one in Ceylon. After our ac-quaintance developed to where he couldquestion me in regard to my beliefs and

thinking, he predicted that some day Iwould go to these foreign lands as a partof what was in store in the future forme. He brought me in contact with someothers who were also members of theRosicrucian Order in foreign lands andthey gradually instructed me while I wasin Westchester, New York, and in New York City at the close of the sessions of the Odd Fellows Lodge, which we allattended. One time in a temple of Free-masonry in Brooklyn they gave me aspecial preparatory initiation so that I

would be prepared to make further con-tacts abroad. I now know and appreci-ate that that preliminary initiation wassimilar to that which is given to theAMORC Neophyte here in this coun-try. After receiving that initiation, I readmany manuscripts and private papersloaned to me by these men, and I wasgiven a few signs and words. Bear inmind all this occurred before the presentcycle of revival of the Rosicrucian workhad started in America and when vari-

ous men were arranging for its eventualnew cycle of activity as you have statedin your history.

“E arly in 1899 I was on board a U. S.cable ship which stopped at Port Said,

Egypt. There, a Mohammedan Egyp-tian. educated in French, contacted meand handed me a sealed envelope whollyunexpectedly. I opened it and read it,and was prepared to follow its strangeadvice. At Ceylon, India, while on shorefor a few hours, a man named AchmetPundi came out to the ship and left in-structions which took me to a temple onthe outskirts of Colombo, and there sixmen met me, tested me, and finallyshowed me a symbolical, dramatic pres-entation of much that I had read and

been told in my preparations. I wasthen taken to the .................................

................................. gardens in the citywhere I met an old Hindu. I was greetedby him as a Neophyte comrade. Thisman gave me a paper with peculiar Ara-bic writing on it, which he signed. Thispaper established my preliminary con-nections with the true Rosicrucian or-ganization and approved of all of theRosicrucian characters I had met in thedifferent cities. I was instructed to bringthis paper back to Brother Jones in Phil-

adelphia. Years later, when I washanded the first AMORC literature andsaw certain phrases, signs, and symbols,I recognized instantly the similarity towhat had been shown to me and I wasat home immediately when I joined theAmerican AMORC.’'

As stated above, names have beenchanged in this letter and the arrange-ment of the phrases changed slightly forobvious reasons, but here is a story froma highly reliable source, and from a de-pendable character showing how careful

the organization was in the years pre-ceding 1909 regarding the preparationof any person found worthy to help inthe revival of the work in this countryand the establishment of the new cyclein America. One should notice in thisreport that this Brother was truly fortu-nate in being recognized as a worthycandidate long before he started makingany inquiries in foreign lands, and hadthe benefit of preliminary instructionsand guidance. Knowing the methods

used by the organization, we can easilyunderstand how John Jones reported tothe foreign jurisdictions what he hadtold the good Brother, and. therefore,paved the way for the contacts that were

made at Egypt, Ceylon, and Colombo.Even so, the Brother had to followblindly the advice given to him in mys-terious notes, and go out of his way todo certain things in order to prove hisfuture worthiness. This will help us tounderstand why persons of an inquiringmind bent more upon satisfying theircuriosity or challenging the statementsof the Rosicrucian organization thanupon sincerely seeking its portal havegone abroad demanding that someonetell them where the Rosicrucians meet

and how to find their temples and lodgerooms return to America and report thatthey found nothing and do not believethat the organization exists in foreignlands. In many of the foreian jurisdic-tions to this very day, the Rosicruciantemples and meeting places are con-cealed from all but members in the high-est degrees of the work. Neophytesmeet only those who are apparently stu-dents of certain other definite schools orclasses of mystical study, and do notknow that these smaller groups are really

parts of the outer circle of the Rosicru-cian organization. Thus the new mem-ber or the unprepared seeker is oftenface to face with the very characters,officers, or representatives of the organi-zation which he seeks and does notknow it. All of us at Headquarters havebeen interested many times, since themembers of the first tour to Eqypt re-turned to America, in hearing how someof them separated themselves from thetouring party and tried to locate Rosi-crucian lodge rooms and temples, whichthey felt might exist, but which werenot brought to their attention by thehiqher grade members. These personsfailed to find in some of the cities anyindications of Rosicrucian activitieswhatsoever. Their comments now to theeffect that the organization was probablvnonexistent in those places cause us tosmile in the light of the fact that a dozenor more of the higher degree membersand officers in the party attended varioussessions of the Rosicrucian organization

in these same cities unbeknown to theyounger members of the party. When-ever these younger members of the tourparty visit Headquarters here in San Jose and we show them the correspond-ence, documents, magazines, manu-

scripts, books, cablegrams, and otherthings coming from the Rosicrucianbranches in those cities where theyfailed to make contact, they realize thatoften they were face to face with the ex-istence of the Order but did not knowit. In other cities, of course, during thetour the younger members were permit-ted to make certain contacts and meetRosicrucians of the different jurisdic-tions, and to have them as their escortsduring the tour. This will occur againon our next tour through Egypt, Pales-

tine, and Europe.Some day one of our members who is

highly proficient in the art of story tell-ing will write a real mystical novel in-volving the search of a seeker for theOrder of the Rose Cross in foreignlands, using the experiences of manyothers and the facts which we can sup-ply, and then we shall have a story of adventure fraught with real thrills andall the elements of an experience likethose in the tales of Marie Corelli, JulesVerne, Bulwer Lytton, and others.

 There is something extremely fasci-nating about membership in an organi-zation, which, with all of its outer pub-licity and with all of the references toit in historical books and records, stillmaintains a part of itself with such se-crecy and with such a veil of obscurityas to make it worthy of a real search.

 The mysterious ramifications of the Or-der and its activities constitute one of its most appealing features. Not half of the real story of the Order has everbeen told and probably never will betold except to the few who experience

it. Our members here in America maythink that the western world publicityand the American idea of openness andfrankness has brought to light every fea-ture of the organization, but the truth of the matter is that more of the Order inAmerica remains unknown except to thefew and more of its activities are pro-tected from the unprepared and unquali-fied members in the early grades thanthey can possibly suspect. There aremembers in the Ninth Grade who havebeen in the organization here in America

for twenty years or more, who willfrankly tell that after having been in theNinth Grade for four or five years, theyhave come to realize that there is moreto the organization and more to itsteachings and activities than can be dis-covered through reading any of its workin the first seven or eight grades. Eachmonth their membership brings themnew revelations and surprising interests,and to them the organization is one of the most stupendous, worldwide move-ments, associated with more important

national and international affairs thananything that might be evolved in theimagination. It is only when the mem-ber makes his contact with these otherconditions either here or abroad that theformidable nature and the mystery of the Brotherhood begins to make itself understandable.

A SUGGESTION

For a number of years many of our members have written to us asking for guidanceand the correct manner in which to arrange for a gift of a portion of their worldlypossessions to the Order at the close of their lives. Hundreds have asked for legal advicein regard to the proper phraseology to use to prepare a Will or Testament in which adonation to the AMORC can be made with sureness and dependability. To all suchpersons we have heretofore stated that we left this matter entirely to their own judgment.We learn now that unless the wording of such bequeaths or donations is absolutelycorrect and in conformity with certain state laws the proper wording may be frustrated.

All who desire to arrange for a donation to the Order in their Testaments are advisedthat if they will now write to the Legal Secretary, c/ o AMORC Temple, San Jose,California, and ask for instructions on how to prepare a W ill they will receive withoutany obligation important and helpful information.

A New Help For Our Members

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT MAY INTERESTEVERY MEMBER OF THE ORDER

OME months ago we maileda questionnaire to a crosssection of ten thousand of our members, representing

the average in all grades andall branches of our work,asking about ninety ques-tions. It was our purpose to

determine from the answers to thesequestions just what features and whatchanges or modifications might be madein our work or added to our work tohelp the individual member in his studiesand in the mastership of the great lawsand principles. Many very wonderfulideas were suggested to us in this wayand as rapidly as possible we are adopt-

ing the suggestions which came fromthe majority of the members.One of the suggestions that was made

by thousands of our members andseemed to be a universal desire on theirpart was that we should issue fromtime to time some sort of a bulletinor pamphlet or booklet containing ans-wers to questions propounded to theImperator and answered personally byhim, giving detailed advice and sugges-tions for the mastership of certain prob-lems in life and the more efficient mas-

tership of the laws and principles con-tained in our teachings. So generalseemed to be the idea in the minds of those who made this suggestion, that wetook it upon ourselves to consult hun-dreds of them by mail and find out justwhat points they had in mind and welikewise interviewed all members whocalled at headquarters and those in var-ious Lodges. We found that these mem-bers were very anxious to have more of the modern writings and viewpoints of the Imperator in his own language and

in his efficient and clear manner of pre-senting the facts that he has gleanedfrom his own experience with our workand through his thousands of contacts

and demonstrations with our members invarious parts of the country. All seemedto be agreed that not enough of the Imperator’s writings appeared in themonthly magazine due to his desire tohave the viewpoint of other memberstherein as well as his own viewpointsand due to the fact that space waslimited in the Rosicrucian D igest . Sec-ondly, we learned that the average mem-ber was especially anxious to have theanswers that the Imperator gives to somany of the members in his personal

interviews and personal correspondencerelating to so many of the importantproblems of life as well as to our ownprinciples and teachings.

Considering these desires, therefore,on the part of so many members, weconsulted with the Imperator and foundthat he was willing that his talks and hispersonal instructions given to those mem-bers who constitute his Master classat headquarters should be given to allmembers if some convenient way couldbe arranged for the recording of private

lectures and the copying of his personalanswers in addition to the special matterthat he would prepare in his spare timeand during his periods of experimenta-tion and contact with the higher Mastersand the most advanced members of theGreat White Brotherhood.

 The result of our investigation of thefeasibility of meeting this widespreaddesire was that we have concluded toissue a new booklet approximately everyother month to be called “The Rosicru-cian Forum.” It will be a large size

booklet with pages as large as our “Rosi-crucian Digest" but filled very closelyand solidly with reading matter dictatedby or prepared by the Imperator exclu-sively, except when he will include inhis matter letters or paragraphs received

by him from the Masters of the GreatWhite Lodge, higher officers and Mas-ters in foreign lands, or some portionof a rare manuscript belonging to theRosicrucian Order that has never beenpublished before. The pages will alsocontain answers to questions dealingwith the more important problems of life and especially with the esoteric, spir-itual, mystical, and actual, practical ap-plication of the Rosicrucian principles inconnection with the various difficultieswhich our members meet in attaining

perfection and mastership in their stud-ies. Diagrams illustrating the operationof certain laws, pictures of various kinds,and photographs, may be inserted fromtime to time in order to illustrate manypoints of the work and every inch of thespace in each issue of this “Forum" willbe devoted to actual guidance and wis-dom prepared by the Imperator. We willarrange to have several special stenog-raphers present at each of the sessionswhen the Imperator and his class of ad-vanced workers hold their secret meet-ings and discuss and demonstrate ortest the various laws and principles andanother secretary will be engaged to as-sist the Imperator in the arranging of the matter for each one of the issues of the “Forum."

Naturally this publication will be asecret one prepared exclusively for ourmembers and is not to be sold publiclyor placed in libraries or reading rooms.In order to meet the expenses of the ad-ditional stenographers and secretary, aswell as the writing, printing, mailing,and postage of this special publication,we have found that the most economicalprice that can be put upon it will be$2.50 per year for the six copies thatwill be mailed during the year. One

copy will be mailed to each member whowishes this publication approximatelyevery two months. When there isspecial matter that will warrant mailingan issue at some special date, it will bemailed regardless of whether it follows

closely upon the preceding one or not,but there will be a minimum of six copiesper year mailed to every subscriber andfor this the subscriber will pay $2.50 peryear, in advance.

 To make sure, however, that our mem-bers actually want this publication andthat we are not arbitrarily issuing some-thing with the idea of rostering it uponour members without their demand for it,we will not issue the first number of this“Forum" until we hear from our mem-bers. Is Karma Understandable?SOME OF ITS FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES CLEARLY

EXPLAINED

Si MY journeys round aboutamong a great many peopleof different types of minds, Ifind that the term or word“Karma” seems to carry withit the impression that it is

the name of some orientaldoctrine or mystic principle that is hardto understand and difficult to adopt con-sistently with our American ideals andreligious beliefs. Why this viewpointshould be held by so many intelligentpersons is difficult to analyze and wewill not take unnecessary time to evenspeak of the unreasonableness of such astrange interpretation.

First of all, let us say that the term“Karma” has been adopted by the Rosi-crucians and by many others, simply be-cause it is one of the shortest and mosteasily remembered names given to thegreat law by some of the Orientalschools. We have other Oriental wordsin our English language, such as psy-chology, which do not nowadays causeany suspicion in the minds of personsregarding its Occidental or WesternWorld application, and there is no rea-son for anyone to feel that Karma rep-resents a word that fits only the orientalmind or nature. One of the greatestwriters of essays called this same doc-trine “The Law of Compensation,” which

is a more descriptive term but a longerone, and we, of the Western World,like brevity and conciseness.

Now the law of compensation isneither a religious nor spiritual lawpurely and simply. Since it is a naturallaw, and all Cosmic laws are consideredreligious, divine, sacred, or spiritual,simply because the standard universities,colleges, and material schools of philoso-phy leave all Cosmic principles to thechurches or religious movements to ex-

pound. This is the one great mistakethat has been made by the Westernmind in its classification of universallaws. When science gets out its micro-scope and its laboratory equipment, itproceeds to classify phenomena as natu-

ral or spiritual. It attempts to draw amore definite line than science has beenable to draw between physics and chem-istry. The line between physics andchemistry is so wobbly and so elastic,that it stretches back and forth betweenthe two fields of these subjects, accord-ing to the arbitrary decision of variousauthors. Science will delve deeply intothe nature of the breath of life that wetake into our nostrils and will carefullyanalyze that breath to determine its na-ture and composition, but when it findssomething in that breath that is notchemical or physical but, nevertheless,vital, it immediately casts aside the in-tangible element and says that by itsspirituality it, therefore, belongs to theinvestigations of religion or theology, orthe goodly people of the church, and hasno place in the laboratory researches.Why this is so is another one of thesubjects, the analysis of which wouldtake too much space in the present arti-cle. Such decisions are as unreasonableas the opinions held by some persons re-garding the nature of Karma.

However, the fact remains that whenyou begin to study the life of man andthe laws and principles which regulatehis existence, you find science thrustingaside many of the fundamental laws andbrushing them into a pile which is care-fully put into a separate box and labelled“Religious or Spiritual.” For this rea-son, we know more about the chemicalbody of a cell that holds the true formof earthly consciousness than we knowabout the consciousness that makes the

cell of any importance in life. We knowmore about the skin and bones of man’sbody than we do about the vitality thatmakes the skin and bone of any service. The average automobile owner can tellyou more about the nuts, bolts, springs,

and mechanical devices on his car, thanhe can tell you about the marvelousprocesses of vitalizing the enginethrough the natural law of combustion.He studies the traffic laws, which regulate the movement of the car among ma-terial things, but fails wholly to studythe natural laws that make possible anymovement of the car. Man is prone tostudy the physical laws of his existenceand allow the Cosmic laws that makehis existence possible to go unnoticed,unstudied, and unobeyed.

 The law of compensation is as mucha fundamental law of nature, irrespec-tive of religion or ethics, as is the lawof breathing, eating, resting, working,and sleeping. The law of compensationis not even wholly a law that deals withthe activities of the soul or the mind. Ithas as much to do with the material,mundane affairs of the physical bodyand of the social and business world, ashas the laws of health. And you can just as successfully negate, belittle, de-cry, and unobserve the laws of Karma

as you can the laws of health. In bothcases the law continues to operate, re-gardless of your opinion or your atti-tude, and in both cases, the penaltieswill manifest themselves despite your be-lief that you are superior to doctrines of any kind.

Fundamentally, the law of compensa-tion may be expressed in that old prov-erb that, “As you sow, so shall youreap.” It naturally does away with theidea of fate, chance, predestination, andsatanic temptation. If there ever was adevil with horns and farreaching tail, itis the spirit in man that makes him be-lieve that he can think and act indepen-dently of any effect resulting throughthe law of compensation. That nicehorned, fiery, glibtongued smooth fel-low of the regions below is a weakminded infant in comparison with thesuperiority complex that resides in somany human ueings and which temptsthem to defy the laws of Karma.

All sowing for any harvest is not al-ways done by the planting of materialseeds in material soil. In fact, there isnothing so potent as a mental seed thatgets firmly lodged in a fertile conscious-ness or virgin mind. The largest and

most costly crop is not always one thatresults from broadcasting seeds indis-criminately or profusely. Sometimes onlya few seeds deliberately planted accord-ing to carefully considered plans andaided by the encouragement of somewellselected fertilizer will produce forthe grower all that he can take care of,and sometimes more than he can takecare of. The same is true of our mentaland physical seeds which we sow in life.

We all know that many things growin the soil of the earth through the blow-

ing of seeds by the wind or the droppingof the seeds by birds that carry them intheir flights. All seeds that produce veg-etation are not seeds that are wilfullyand deliberately planted through humanscheming. The same is true of the seedsof Karma. Most of them we deliber-ately plant and fertilize and carefullyexhilarate until they are marvelous prod-ucts overpowering us with their majestyand enslaving us by their greatness. Butmany of these seeds are dropped by uson the wayside unwittingly and un-

knowingly. Nevertheless, the law of Karma is steadfast, dependable, fair, and just, and in all cases, we reap what wesow. It does make some difference, how-ever, whether we deliberately sow or un-wittingly sow. Every farmer and agri-culturist will tell you that that is true of the sowing of any kind of seeds, andevery student of Cosmic law will tellyou that it is a demonstrable fact. Thelaw of compensation takes into consid-eration the motive back of our sowing,as it takes into consideration the motive

back of all of our actions. A good seedsown in a selfish spirit is not nearly soproductive in its Cosmic compensationfor us as a good seed sown spontane-ously, deliberately, and unselfishly. Anevil seed sown unwittingly does not pro-duce the same result as one sown know-ingly and wilfully. There are wild oatsproduced by nature from seeds notplanted with human conscious knowl-edge. They are never as profuse or asprolific in compensation as the oats re-

suiting from seeds consciously and de-liberately sown. Yet the law is the law,and where oat seeds are sown, oats willgrow.

 The law of compensation says to man,

as you create, so you shall have. As youthink, so you will materialize. As youbuild, so will you have to contend with.As you do, so will you come face to facewith your doing. As you think, so youwill set into motion. Through its mani-festations, the law of Karma proves thatif man creates, causes, or instigates sor-row or suffering, whether for himself orfor others, so he shall have to enduresuffering and sorrow. If he creates orproduces happiness, joy, and goodness,he will find these things affecting his

life. If he disturbs the harmony of theuniverse, as it affects each individual be-ing, each group of beings, each nation,each country, he will find the disturb-ance in return affecting him. The lawof compensation is simply then the re-action of action. It is impersonal, it isno respecter of person, time, or place.

 The law is immutable and it is not thearbitrary decision of action of a DivmeBeing now carefully watching each of our acts but a law which the God of creation established when he created all

laws and which carries on with its Cos-mic power and might, regardless of timeand regardless of any supervision by anInfinite Mind.

It is remarkable, however, how manypersons believe that the law of compen-sation is so unfair, so unjust, so unrea-sonable in its operation that it followsman's imitation of the law. Man in at-tempting to imitate the law of compen-sation has made laws of his own, whichdemand an eye for an eye and a toothfor a tooth. Judging the law of compen-

sation by comparison with man’s law,the law of compensation would be unjustand unfair. Moreover, it would fail inits real purpose. The purpose of thelaw of compensation is not to punishbut to teach; not to destroy but to cre-ate; not to tear down but to build up.As I have said above, it takes into con-sideration the motive back of the act.Man’s law says a life for a life. Thelaw of compensation says that the tak-ing of a life for a life means the destroy-

ing of a second life because the first onewas destroyed; therefore, further de-struction is accomplished and nothing of a constructive nature is accomplished. The law of compensation says that if a

life was taken in order to make someonesuffer, that suffering should be experi-enced by the one who caused the lossof life in order that he may know thevalue of life and bitterness of sorrow. The law of compensation says that if awrong is done another, no good is ac-complished by having the same wrongcome to the wrongdoer, but rather someform of suffering that will reveal a les-son rather than contain mere agony. If good oats that came from the seedswhere wild oats grow were as good as

the best, man would never have learnedhow to properly plant and sow for bet-ter crops.

Since the law of compensation asksalways to teach us a lesson and to saveus from making the same error twice, itbrings back to us a reaction from ouractions in such circumstances and undersuch conditions as will most readily im-press the lessons upon us and tempt usto change our ways. On the other hand,the blessings that come from our goodacts through the law of Karma are of 

such a nature and reward us at such atime or place as make quite evident tous the Cosmic approval of what we havedone in the past and its willingness tocompensate us in a more abundant anduseful manner. A small token of littlevalue given spontaneously, unselfishly,and in the proper spirit, will not be re-warded by the return of a similar tokenat a time when such a token would beof little value, but by the return of alarger or different gift at a time whenthe thing given would be the most use-

ful and beneficial. Therefore, the lawof compensation sometimes waits for thecrucial or critical or most timely periodof our lives when its action would bethe most impressive, and always themost instructive. It may cause us tosuffer long, perhaps for years or a life-time, for a simple act that we performedin a few minutes. What we did may nothave consumed much time in the doing,but may have caused a lifetime of suffer-ing for someone else, and the reaction

is suffering for us until we learn the les-sons and realize what our little act cre-ated.

It is a notable fact also that as rapidlyas we learn the lessons of Karma, ourcompensation is adjusted and the re-

wards or reactions are brought to anend. I have seen many who have beensuffering for years under the reaction of a Karmic debt, but who refused to ac-knowledge the lesson or learn the prin-ciple. Once the confession was madeand in humbleness the law was acknowl-edged, the Karmic debt was brought toan end.

We see, therefore, that man’s re-demption lies not in the simple confes-sion of his sins or acknowledgment of his errors, but in his learning of the les-son and his paying tribute to the supe-

riority of the great law. Once he hum-bly obeys the law, pays homage to it ashis guide and director in worldly affairs,and cooperates with the law in sowingonly those seeds which will producegood things in harmony with the natu-

ral laws of the universe will find his lifestarting over again with every advan-tage, every Cosmic blessing, every godlygift at his disposal. Man reaps his Kar-mic reward for earthly acts here on earthwhere he may associate them with theproducts of the seeds he has sown, andavail himself of the earthly lessons whichhe must learn before he can be free fromKarmic debt. It is the law of laws and,deny it as we may, it continues to oper-ate and will have its way to the end of our lives.

Marie Corelli, the Illuminated MysticSOME VERY INTERESTING FACTS FROM OLD

ROSICRUCIAN RECORDS

(HERE are two Rosicrucianauthors whose books havebeen read by more of ourmembers than the books by

U any other of the mysticalwriters and whose lives havearoused more questions.

 These are Lord Bulwer Lytton and Marie Corelli.

During the past ten years, severalthousand of our members have asked usto give a brief outline of the evidentlyinteresting life story of Marie Corelli,

and since the biography of da Vinci waspublished on these pages, the request foradditional biographical sketches of Rosi-crucians has greatly increased. I amsure, therefore, that our readers will beglad to know more about Marie Corelliand of her association with the Rosi-crucian Order.

Miss Corelli was born in 1864 of aScottish mother and an I talian father.An emblem engraved on the top of a

handcarved wooden chest with largeiron locks and hinges, which the fatherleft in the care of the members of a se-cret brotherhood of Italy to be given toMiss Corelli on her thirteenth birthday,plainly indicated that he was a memberof the Rosicrucian organization in hiscountry and an officer of some rank inthe Order, for he had the typical addi-tional sign of officership under the crestof the Order. What the casket containedMiss Corelli never revealed to the publicor even to the members of the secret

brotherhood, which was, of course, theRosicrucian Order, in whose care thecasket had remained for so many years.One incident in her later career, how-ever, did bring to light that the casketprobably contained in addition to rarebooks and manuscripts, emblems andpersonal trinkets of a Rosicrucian na-ture, the father’s official robes and asword used by the Rosicrucians, for onthe occasion of Miss Corelli's being

knighted as a Lady and officer of a lodgein Europe, she brought with her a verybeautifully engraved sword containingthe Rosy Cross on the handle and askedthat this sword be used in knighting her

since it had at one time been her fath-er’s sword. This would indicate that herfather held a rather high position in oneof the lodges, for there is but one officerin each lodge that has a sword as partof his regular regalia.

Miss Corelli was left an orphan earlyin infancy and was adopted by CharlesMackay, an illuminated poet, musician,and mystic. If this were a biographicalsketch of Mr. Charles Mackay we wouldfind an interesting story in his life andespecially pertaining to the reasons for

his adoption of Miss Corelli. Mackayhad a son, Eric, and although there wasa considerable difference in the ages of Eric and Marie, they were raised to-gether until the time of the father’stransition, when Eric became Marie’sguardian.

We have Miss Corelli’s own state-ment of the fact that she was prenatallyprepared for her life career in so far asher objective or outer facilities and abil-ities are concerned. Certainly, she in-herited from her father certain ten-dencies which became quite manifestearly in her life and she fulfilled the am-bitions of both of her parents in reveal-ing a wonderful talent for music and incarrying out the father’s great interestin the Rosicrucian organization. Mysti-cally and psychically her prenatal prepa-ration attracted to the future Miss Co-relli, the soul of a great master whosepersonality and high estate in the Rosi-crucian organization became known longbefore her transition.

Revealing her musical inclinations andabilities at an early age caused Mr.Mackay to decide to send her to aFrench convent in order that she mighthave the benefit of the unusual musicaltraining afforded by such institutions inthat country. At an early age she com-posed a number of very beautiful andstrange compositions with a very evidentmystical movement and theme in eachone of them. Since she and only a fewintimate friends of Mackay, who werestudents of the same school, could prop-

erly play or interpret these pieces of music, they were deemed of little valueto the public and her musical inclinationwas considered too weird or strange forthe period in which she lived. This dis-

couraged her and Mr. Mackay in con-tinuing her musical education and shegave vent to her thoughts and emotionsthrough the one other channel whichviewed with her music in expressing thewisdom of her soul. Thus she turned towriting and her first poems were highlypraised and considered good enough byeditors to be printed.

 Thus Miss Corelli entered the jour-nalistic field and in that field attainedone phase of the popularity and renownwhich made her name well known to

millions. But she was famous also as amystic and a teacher in private circlesconnected with several movements, theprincipal one being the Rosicrucian Or-der. It was commonly stated in Eng-land, where she spent much of her time,that her novels were preferred by QueenVictoria to any other although reviewersand literary critics wrote sarcasm or oth-erwise of not only her literary geniusbut of her literary lapses. Her onlycomment on such criticisms was that herbooks were never written to be stand-

ards of English literature or for literarycriticism or for public approval but toreveal an interesting story for the seekerof truth who was just a beginner on thepath and unveil between the lines andphrases of her peculiar style certain con-cealed or veiled thoughts put there forthe adepts. Later in her life she livedfor a time at StratfordonAvon becauseof its connection with Shakespeare andits connection with Bacon the Rosicru-cian and this incident in her life broughther before the public in a different light

and added to her popularity. Regardlessof her literary abilities or failings, fromthe critical point of view, the fact isconceded by the publishing world, aswell as by the public, that she was aliterary genius and a representative of a new and different school of story tell-ing in which not only great learning andarcane wisdom was revealed but an in-tuitive and prophetic facility possessedby only a few writers known to history.

So much for the general details of her life as may be found in any complete

record of her life. The fact of the mat-ter is, however, that little more than thiswill be found in any biographical sketchof her life because she took great pains,as did her closest friends and her guar-dian, to keep the inner facts of her life

out of the public mind. It is only byvisiting some of the places where shehas lived and by consulting the recordsof the Rosicrucian organization thatmany additional facts, intimate incidentsin her life, are discovered. These couldbe woven into a very long and trulyfascinating novel, for her life was filledwith surprising incidents and with greataccomplishments and more journeys andcontacts with people and places than iscommonly believed. Her mystical expe-riences and her many occasions of long

and deep research in Rosicrucian andscientific teachings, history, and the livesof the great masters of the past, wouldmake wonderful reading for our mem-bers. All of these things must betouched lightly and briefly in a sketchof this kind. Therefore I will mention just a few of the interesting incidents of her life as I come to them in the recordsbefore me.

After her first poems of youthful pro-duction had gained for her some ap-proval as a possible literary genius, she

realized the mystical tendencies of herthinking and then, after properly con-sulting the records and papers left inthe casket for her to read, she decidedto spend the better part of her youth inprofound study of the mystical sciences,the spiritual philosophies, and ancientreligions and Hermetic and alchemicalpostulations. At her petition, probablybased upon instructions left by herfather, she was admitted to the prelimi-nary studies of the Rosicrucian organi-zation under the Italian jurisdiction. The

Rosicrucian Order at that time wasoperating very secretly in I taly as it hasdone most of the centuries in which theOrder has existed in that country. How-ever, she came in contact with eminentmusicians, authors, and writers, and was

able fame. Early in her youth, Mariehad been attracted to the fine, sterlingcharacter of Eric and in her discussionswith him of her mystical ideas, she hadfound a sympathetic understanding andagreement on certain principles. As shegrew older he became a living exampleof mystical illumination in her mind andshe retained this high regard of himthroughout her life.

 Just before her eighteenth birthday,Miss Corelli was admitted to the higherand regular grades of the Rosicrucianwork and visited lodges in both Italyand France and occasionally in othernearby countries. Even in England shehad special access to Rosicrucian rec-ords left by Bacon and by other emi-nent leaders of the work in that country.

It is not surprising, therefore, that herfirst books dealt with the revelation of mystical principles. In her novel enti-tled, “Ardath: The Story of a DeadSelf,” she used Eric as a living exampleof the hero Ardath and in this way re-corded for all time her great apprecia-tion of his character. The name of thegreat master in that story, Helios, is thename of one of the masters of the GreatWhite Lodge into whose care and underwhose instruction she was placed duringone of her visits to Paris. His transition

occurred in 1928 and he has left manywonderful comments regarding MissCorelli’s beautiful illumination which oc-curred during a week of ceremony andmeditation at one of the French Rosi-crucian temples at Cannes.

In the book called “Ardath” she re-fers to the character of Helios in a man-ner that presents a real picture of thisgreat Rosicrucian master and she refersto the Rosicrucian organization as theorganization of the “Cross and theStar.” Her explanation for the use of this veiled name for the organization isan interesting sidelight. When she wasasked, just prior to her sixteenth birth-day by an eminent Rosicrucian artist,what she would like to have for a birth-day gift, she said that she had alreadyexpressed a wish to a SwissI talian woodcarver for a duplicate chest like thatonce possessed by her father in whichto keep her private records and manu-scripts. The artist called on the wood

carver to see if he might offer his servicesto help make the casket a beautiful pieceof work. The sculptor suggested thatthey might cooperate by carving thewood in such a manner that colored

enamels might be inlaid in the wood incertain places. In discussing the matterof carving emblems and designs for suchinlay work the artist drew a sketch of the Rosicrucian emblem for the centerof the lid of the casket and in drawingan outline of the rose to go in the centerof the cross, he wanted to give a mysti-cal number to the petals of the rose sohe decided upon seven petals. Thesepetals were equally spaced and a littlepointed and when finally finished hadthe appearance of a star. Those who

saw the casket commented upon thisquite frequently although all admittedthat so far as the emblem in its total de-sign was concerned, it was typicallyRosicrucian. Miss Corelli was pleased,however, over the fact that wheneverstrangers saw the casket in her privateroom, for it was a very large one, theyalways referred to the emblem on the lidas the “Cross and the Star’’ and didnot suspect that it was a rose and con-sequently did not associate it with theRosicrucian emblem. When Miss Co-

relli wrote “Ardath” and sought formany ways to veil some of the charac-ters and symbols in the story she foundit convenient to use the name “Cross andStar” as a veiled name for the Rosicru-cian Brotherhood. Rosicrucians whoread the story, however, never have anydoubt as to the nature of the organiza-tion referred to and the characters men-tioned therein.

I will not take space to comment onall of her other books except to say that“The Soul of Lilith.” one that is not

generally found in the libraries, is oneof the most beautiful character studiesever written by Miss Corelli. “Barabbas” is another very mystical storywhich all of our members should read.In “The Life Everlasting,” which wasone of her late novels, she revealed herRosicrucian knowledge and associationsin a very definite way. “The Romanceof Two Worlds” was one of the first of her mystical books to attract attention

to her scientific knowledge. And it is

also replete with a valuable amount of Rosicrucian philosophy. In it she re-ferred to radium, which had at that timenot yet been revealed to the public.Later on in one of her novels, in a pro-

logue she refers to the fact that one of her early books had contained a proph-ecy of a scientific nature and we allknow of the story of her years of asso-ciation with eminent scientists in Eng-land and France while perfecting herself in the modern sciences and of her predic-tion of the socalled death ray in one of her stories long before the public heardof it.

In 1917 Miss Corelli startled theworld with her book, “The Young Di-ana.” It was the first of the many out-

lines presenting the possibility of a re- juvenation but it will be noticed thattrue to the Rosicrucian teachings, MissCorelli placed great stress on the factthat spiritual and psychical powerswould have to enter into any true proc-ess of rejuvenation.

In her last novel, called “The SecretPower,” she again revealed her scien-tific knowledge and her perfected andintuitive powers at their best.

Up to the time of her transition, ap-proximately six years ago. Miss Corelli

retained her position as an officer, anhonor officer, of the Italian branch of the Rosicrucian Order as well as activemembership in the French and Englishbranches. One of her late novels, issuedin America, was claimed by her to havebeen written and issued in the countrysolely for the purpose of conservative,dignified propaganda for the present eraof American Rosicrucian activity. Shewas an accomplished linguist, had acharming personality, but was unques-tionably temperamental and highly emo-

tional. To the same dignity that shecared nothing for self aggrandizementand personal praise, she cared little forthe many unkind criticisms and violentattacks made upon her by selfappointedliterary critics. Her success created anumber of bitter enemies who left nostone unturned to attack her characterand despoil her literary fame. T hey mag-nified and misrepresented her tempera-mental spells or idiosyncrasies and haveleft in the world a number of untrue or

exaggerated stories of unpleasant inci-dents in her life. This is inevitably theprice that most individuals have to payfor success and unselfish effort in behalf of humanity. Those who know her per-sonally will never forget the charm, sim-plicity, fineness, and humanitarian be-nevolence carried on by her in manyparts of Europe and made possiblethrough the money that came from herfame and success even though this samefame and success were bitterly attackedand criticized by her enemies.

 To all Rosicrucians and to all whoread her books and find in them theglimmering light of truth or the daz-zling scintillation and effulgence of thehighest illumination, there will always bein their souls a formed understanding of 

her life, her trials, tribulations, and un-selfish efforts. They will take from hermusic the notes and chords of sweetestharmony as they will take from her

writings the words of inspiration andpower and from her smiling countenancethe expression of Peace Profound. Wecould not do better in paying tribute toher than to quote from her own book,“The Young Musician,” the following

paragraphs:

effort swept away by the ruthless handof deceit, ten years of struggle, of ef-fort gone forever.

I won’t bore you with the details of the thing. Suffice it to say that not onlydid I lose the fruits of ten years of ef-fort—fruits, both financial and moral—but my reputation of integrity and hon-esty hung in the balance, my personalhabits, my character were so blackenedthat I became practically a social out-cast.

My nerves gave way. I became hys-terical at the slightest provocation, Icouldn’t eat or sleep, I could only thinkof the great wrong that had been doneto me—by one whom I had cherished foreight years as my friend and counselor.

I was bitter, I felt ugly inside and out,I believed that the whole world wasagainst me; my hatred for the despoiler,

for those who had believed her lies, suf-fused my being, poisoned me. Peoplefelt sorry for me, but they shunned meand no wonder! They said I was sulky,bad tempered, disagreeable. They were

right, I was.Nothing I wrote sold, nothing I at-tempted worked out; and I grew shab-bier, and more desolate. And still thatgnawing hatred pervading through me.

Having some research to do, I went tothe Los Angeles Public Library, andpicked up a copy of theM yst i c Tr iangle, now the Rosi ctuci an D igest .

Rosicrucians! Occultism, reincarnation,fascinating mysteries! I immediately bor-rowed the money for my first fee—Ineeded shoes badly—and started to

study.Every Thursday, I watched for themailman, every month I struggled to paythe small fee—in those days, even pen-nies counted.

Gradually, insidiously, I began tochange. I saw the futility of hatred, of brooding; I no longer dwelled on thewrongs done to me, instead, I tried toredress some of the wrongs that hadbeen done to others.

My shattered health was the hardestto rebuild—it is not normal yet—but my

mental balance returned. I had beencheated out of the credit and the moneydue me for two good stories, I wouldwrite better ones. I had always believedthat I could write, I would prove to allthat I could, that I had written thosestories, that they were mine, all my own.

I obtained work—started at the bot-tom of the ladder again—I had to winback the confidence of so many people,to prove to them my integrity time and

time again, and to make them change thewrong impression they had gained of my personality.

Uphill work? I guess so, but satisfac-tory, with the new viewpoint gradually

being reflected in my eyes, with the linesof bitterness and despair being slowlyerased from my face. Of course, I slippedback into the old groove, doubt and fore-boding assailed me at times, but thosehours were getting shorter all along.

After two years, I can contemplatethe self that I was during those heart-breaking months, when I was “slipping,”both mentally and physically, and mysoul seemed lost!

While I haven’t had the time to studyall the AMORC lectures as I would

wish to, so as to benefit fully, yet themere reading and absorbing of the wis-dom of ages, as radiated by the Rosicru-cians, has been tremendously helpful.My entire outlook on life has beenchanged. I am rebuilding my healthalong occult lines, I am learning to studyand to use vibrations, my financial sit-uation has improved and is constantlyimproving, I have regained the confi-dence I had lost, people again believe inme, and my literary career is shaping it-self toward the eventual fulfillment of 

all my hopes.My greatest ambition born of mystudies, is to become such a finishedstudent of the occult that I may be able,sometime, in the future, to teach othershow to get the best out of life, how tomake the most of themselves, physically,morally, and in every way, so they mayreap all the happiness that comes frompeace, contentment, and the feeling of duties well done.

If you are going to be absent from your home for two or three weeks, do not think of having your lecture stopped during your absence. It requires ten days to two weeks for usto put a stop check on all of our system and completely alter your mailing so that lectureswould not go to the old address. FEEL inclined this afternoonto rise from my desk here atHeadquarters and step intothe limelight for the first timein many moons and say something publicly to the members

of our Organization through the meansof our monthly magazine.

In my official capacity as a sort of guardian at the Threshold of the Heal-ing Chamber of Headquarters, thou-sands of letters pass through my handsweekly from Brothers and Sisters whoare requesting help for health or otherpersonal problems through the WelfareDepartment, or through the various of-ficers of the Organization. Even many of the letters addressed personally to theImperator asking for his direct helpeventually come into my hands so thatthe request may be properly recordedin our records, and the ultimate resultsalso recorded and the case closed.

I know that every one of us adultsstill has the childish inclination to wantto take a watch apart and see how theworks within perform their marvelousfunctions. I know from talks with visi-tors here at Headquarters that everymember who has ever had any dealingswith the Welfare Department is anx-ious to know the workings of this elab-orate and highly efficient department. I

will not take the time now to go intothat detail except to say that every re-quest that comes to Headquarters, andeven many that are sent to our variouslocal branches for any kind of help,whether it be for immediate aid or of an emergency nature in the case of acci-dents or operations, or for treatments

n  • • f°r health, temporary breakdowns of themind or body, or for aid in solving per-sonal and business problems, passesthrough the Welfare Department con-sisting of a number of clerks, recorders.

stenographers, secretary, and generalmanager. The manager’s business is tosee that this department is operated atthe highest point of efficiency with care-ful, considerate, cordial, brotherly atten-tion given to every letter and to everydetail of each letter. Every request forhelp of any kind is considered like a case

that comes into a clinic or hospital. The name of the person making therequest is recorded as well as the nameof the patient or the one who is to re-ceive help. Details are put upon a rec-ord card and these are dated to be re-ferred to at different periods of the weekor month according to the nature of thecase. Various clerks are assigned towatch for and carefully read every in-coming letter that may bear upon thatcase and to record the details upon therecord card. Certain highly developed

and advanced members of the SupremeLodge are assigned the duties of givingthe help that is necessary in such cases.

 Those of our members who specializedin mental conditions are assigned therequests for help of that nature. Thosewho can help in surgical cases and havespecialized in that work are given thoserequests. Childbirth and other emer-gency conditions are assigned to otherspecialists among our various membersand the Imperator and a few of thehighest officers take care of special cases

which they select from the requests thatcome to them or come to the WelfareDepartment.

 The patient is not told who is takingcare of the case except in a few in-stances, and in some cases several areassigned to the work in order to lookafter various details that are of a differ-ent nature.

 The point that has aroused me to ex-pression this afternoon deals, however,with a feature of the work that is whollyin the hands of the recipients of the help

Our answer to this question is as fol-lows: We do not stop to look up pastrecords every time a request comes infor help for this would mean going backover cards and files long stored awayand not easily accessible and too much

time would be lost in doing this. We donot even stop to look on our records todetermine whether the member makingthe request for help is now an activemember of the Organization or not,whether his monthly dues have been paidpromptly, or whether he is high or lowin the grades of study. The workers inthe Welfare Department have their ownrecords which deal only with cases activeand being cared for at the time and theyare not interested whatsoever in any of the history of the member or his con-

nections with the Organization. Ourmembers know that requests from themfor help have been just as promptly andcourteously answered when they havebeen delinquent with their dues or in-active as when they were active, and hosolicitations for expressions of apprecia-tion have ever been made. But this isnot true with the Cosmic and  thereinlies the great secret.

In answering the question, “Is theCosmic Always Willing?” we can saywith positive enthusiasm that the Cos-

mic is not only willing, but happy to doits very utmost, provided the one whois asking for help has expressed someappreciation and thankfulness for pastblessings or benefits. This is not a lawor principle that we have invented orcreated; and we, ourselves, long agolearned that we are just as subject to itas the least of our members.

When a visitor, or a grateful member,drops in to see us and brings a bunch of fresh flowers, or when some other giftof books or magazines, or anything of 

a material nature is given to the Lodge,the Temple, or the Museum, our firstthought is to express appreciation to theCosmic as well as thanks to the personwho brought the gift. We know that wecan not continue to expect any blessingsor benedictions from the Cosmic unlesseach and every one is appreciative to theextent of expressing their appreciationwith a moment of meditation and thank-fulness.

Even life itself, the greatest of all,draws from each of us words of appre-ciation and thankfulness in the morningwhen we awaken and find that God andthe Cosmic laws have permitted us tohave one more day of earthly labor in

which to serve and help mankind. Eachmorsel of food we eat, each materialand spiritual blessing, is accepted onlywith sincere appreciation.

I have been made very happy recent-ly in being shown the letters sent in byone of our Brothers, an elderly man. whobegins each letter with this phrase, “Godhas permitted me to read another one of the AMORC lectures.” There is appre-ciation of the purest kind, and this dearBrother is receiving from the Cosmicevery beautiful gift and blessing it hasto give.

Why should not every telegram thatcomes to us requesting help be followedwith a telegram reporting results and ex-pressing appreciation? Surely, if it isworth the telegram to ask for help, it isworth the cost of a teleqram to clean theslate and leave the doorway open forfuture benefits. Why is not every letterasking for help eventually followed bya letter containing some report?

Please notice that we do not ask our

members or our friends or relatives towrite us letters of thanks, for none of you can thank us for what we do in thisregard. The only way you can givethanks is to pass along the aoodness tosomeone else and thereby cleanse yourhands of the obligation: but you can andshould express appreciation, not to us,but to the Cosmic. Such expression musttake a definite form and there is no moredefinite way to do it than to write a let-ter to us in the same enthusiasm, andwith the same deqree of sincerity, as youwrote vour oriqinal letter askinq for help.

As I started to say at the beginningof this little article, in looking at thethousands of letters that pass throughmy hands each week. I find those thatcontain this phrase, “I want to expressmy appreciation of the help that has beenreceived and to say that I thank Godor thank the Cosmic for all that It haddone, and I feel deeply obligated to theCosmic for what It has done for methrough your contacts with It.” On the

other hand, there are many letters whichsay that the writers are still waiting forsome benefit to come, some miracle tohappen, some problem to be dissolved,some obstacle to fade away, and the

whole letter is worded with that disre-gard for Cosmic ethics and spiritual ap-preciation as though the letter were be-ing written to the seller of some mer-chandise demanding something in returnfor a remittance that was inclosed withthe letter.

We can not change the Law even if we were inclined to do so, and we cannot do more than to ask the Cosmic tocarry out our petition, our prayers, andour contacts with its powers and prin-ciples. If you are out of Grace with the

Cosmic, or if you have made yourself unworthy of any help from the Cosmicbecause of your attitude toward it oryour lack of appreciation, we can notovercome this higher condition for you.

In closing I would also like to say thatthere are physical conditions which wecannot do anything with, and cannotchange or overcome. Is this surprisingto you? If you are one of those who be-lieves that because in many cases theprinciples working through the Cosmicwill cure disease and perform changes

that are called miraculous, that,therefore, any condition can always bechanged at any time in the future, thenwe must remind you that if this wereso, that no one would ever finally suc-cumb to the ultimate dissolution of thebody and the change called transition. There comes a time in the life of eachone of us when a physical condition willset in leading to the ultimate breakingdown of the perfect standard of thebody preparatory to transition, andwhen that time comes nothing will be

done by the Cosmic, and nothing can  be done by us, to stop the working of the higher law. The breaking down of the body does not always begin sudden-ly and end quickly with transition. It isgenerally a slow process beginning withone or more functions becoming ab-normal or some organ of the body be-coming abnormal in its physical state.

 The breaking down process may covermany years leading to a general andpainless ending of all physical existence.When any condition is established by

the Cosmic or with the approval of theCosmic as a part of the general breakingdown process leading to the ultimateend, there is nothing that the Cosmicwill do, or that we can do, to change

this condition. That does not mean thatevery disease or form of disease, or everyabnormal or subnormal condition of thebody, is prior to an early stage of thegeneral breaking down process leadingto transition.

Our records show that fully ninetyper cent of the cases coming before ourWelfare Department in the past twentyyears were conditions due to a violationof natural laws and were temporary,though serious and very important, aswell as painful and inconvenient. These

are quickly altered and changed by theCosmic if the person is worthy of Cos-mic benediction and help through appre-ciation and attunement with its prin-ciples. But on the average we find tenper cent of the cases are those whichcan not be changed because they may  not be changed. This is particularly sowith elderly persons or those who havebeen suffering a long time and who havelived a very complete life in even a shorttime. This explains why some cases arenot benefited by any form of therapeu-

tics or by any metaphysical law. To feeltherefore, that a physician of any school,or any system like ours, is inefficient be-cause neither one can make a cure ora change in one hundred per cent of thecases is to overlook the fundamental factthat ultimate transition is inevitable, andif no system ever failed to heal and curein every case, then none of those com-ing in contact with that system wouldever pass through the inevitable changecalled transition.

 Thus, I have had my little say in re-

gard to some of the principles in-volved in the work of the Welfare De-partment, and I want to take this oppor-tunity to thank the thousands who havenot forgotten and who from time to timesend souvenir post cards, holiday cards,or little momentos, as well as kindthoughts and good wishes, for we havethousands of requests for help of allkinds, and any gift given to the Wel-fare Department is sure to have an op-portunity of serving someone or help-ing someone who is in real need.

There will be officers and dele-gates from foreiqn cities, who will beglad to meet and talk with you. evening devoted to the viewing of themoving pictures taken on the last trip toEgypt and the Holy Land, with a lec-ture by the Imperator describing the en-tire trip.

What a week of joy and happinessfor our members! Those who came lastyear from all parts of the United Statesand Canada and other lands said thatit was the most wonderful vacation theyever had. Hotel rates in San Jose areabout the same as in any other city,varying from very economical rooms to

high priced ones with every modernconvenience, and at whatever rate theroom is priced, you will find the servicebetter than in any other city. Meals arereasonable and delightfully composed of the freshest fruits and vegetables of thiswonderful valley. There are auto campsclose by with reasonable rates for thosewho wish to come by automobile. Youmay come a few days before the Con-vention or stay a few days after, andmake your visit as long as you please,and you will be welcome to come to

the reading room and library here andenjoy all of the privileges we have tooffer.

In buying railroad tickets from theeast to come west, tell the railroad toroute you Los Angeles through San

Francisco. That will permit you to stopoff at San Jose as long as you wish, andto return east through Los Angeles andthe southern part of the country, or youmay reverse the route and have your

ticket read from the east to San Fran-cisco via Los Angeles, and return byway of San Francisco and the northernroute. This will enable you to not onlystop off in San Jose but in San Francisco,Los Angeles, or any other city, and makea long or short vacation trip as youchoose. With the low summer rates forCalifornia on the railroads, this shouldbe a wonderful opportunity for you. If you are a member of one of our groupsor lodges in your city, tell the Master orSecretary of your Group that you are

coming to the Convention and you willbe appointed a delegate. But whetheryou are a delegate or not, you are wel-come to come and enjoy this Conventionwith us. If you want certain hotel roomsor conditions reserved for you, write tothe Convention Secretary, care of AM-ORC, San Jose, California, or telegraphand state what you want. There will beno difficulty, however, in securing roomsof any kind after you get here. But, wewould appreciate having a letter fromyou or a telegram stating you are coming

so that we may prepare some specialfeatures in accordance with the numberof persons coming from each section of the country.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERSDuring the past few months an important change has been made in the lectures of 

the first grade of the National Correspondence Studies. Heretofore an initiation ritual wassent to all new members as part of the first instructions they received. Under the presentsystem each new members receives six lectures of preparation and preliminary study beforereceiving the first preliminary ritual. This enables all new members to establish a betterunderstanding of certain terms and conditions before starting with the regular lectures

and teachings of the first grade. In speaking to prospecdve members, therefore, pleasedo not lead them to believe that an initiation ritual will come to them as part of the firstinstructions they receive. There is nothing in the six preliminary lectures that our regu-

lar members do not receive in their regular studies, but to avoid misunderstanding it is

better not to discuss the nature of these preliminary lectures with prospective members.

SH E other day I brushed up a” suit of clothes that had

served me well for some littletime and making sure thatit was free from spots andneeded no little stitches, Iput it upon a hanger and no-tified the Salvation Army

that it could call and get the suit to giveto someone who needed it. During theday it was called for and left my hometo return no more. In the evening, Ithought of the suit and wondered whatservice it might give to someone or whereit would eventually be placed. M y mindbegan to recall the day that the suitwas delivered to my home so spick andspan, and stylish looking, and of howhappy I was to have this new suit to useoccasionally. And then I thought of themany occasions on which I had worn it,and how it had been to different citieson trips with me and how well it hadheld its shape, how excellently it had

worn, and how fond I had been of itscolor and style. It really had been myfavorite suit for a long time, and wornonly on those occasions when I wantedthe suit to serve me to the best advan-tage. My reminiscences developed atenderness in my mind toward this oldbrown suit. It had always lookedfamiliar hanging there in my closet andit seemed to have a smile upon it whenI was dressing to go to any specialplace where it would help me to look mybest, and now, it was gone! Now it had

passed out of my life into the unknown.My friend, my companion, my smilingservant had left me and I would enjoyits blessings no longer. I was not sad-dened because I realized that in the eco-nomic scheme of things the suit had tobe laid aside because it had served itspurpose, had fulfilled its mission, andcould no longer serve as another suit orcovering for my body could serve.

 Then I thought of the socalled deathof the body. M y fleshly self is but acovering for the real self within, just asthe suit had been a covering for thefleshly body. This physical covering of mine is becoming worn and is wearingout in its service and in what it can doto help the inner self present a good ap-pearance and carry on its mission. WillI regret the eventual necessity of chang-ing the physical covering more than I re-gretted changing the outer covering of cloth? When I cast off this physicalbody that is like a cloak for my soul,will there be those who will follow thecovering to its resting place and withflowers and tears adore what I have castoff and think that it still contains thereal self of me? I will not follow the suitthat I have given to charity and try tofind where it will hang or rest at times,and there bow down before it and wor-ship it because it once contained me orbecause it once served me so well and

was my friend and companion. Why,then, should anyone want to pay re-spects to the body that I will cast off when the inevitable change is foundnecessary in accordance with the eco-nomics of life?

 The casting off of my brown suit didnot mean that the body of mine and theself of me had worn out as had the suitor that the separation of the suit andmyself meant annihilation, dissolution,or the end of all conscious existence forthat which was the real part of me. It

merely meant that in order that I mightcontinue more economically, more effici-ently, and more happily to present my-self before others and to continue mywork in the great scheme of things, Imust place upon me a new covering thatwould give me another period of service,protection, and proper presentation.

 Thus in the economic scheme of things, transition is the great conserverand the most divine blessing that cancome to man.

iO USAN DS of our membersare reporting daily their in-teresting contacts with theCathedral. Many remarkablecures and hundreds of instantreliefs from suffering and painhave been reported as well as

many hundreds of incidents of help inother ways. Answers to problems, de-cisions as to what should or should notbe done in certain circumstances, infor-mation that is immediately needed tomeet some special requirement, and aidsof various kinds have been received bymembers who report these things in veryenthusiastic letters. All new members of the organization receive instructionsabout making contact with the Cathedralof the Soul in the sixth week of theirmembership after they have received sixpreliminary lectures and lessons prepar-ing them to understand the wonderfulprinciples involved in contacting thisCathedral.

For the benefit of those who find itdifficult at first to make the contact after

having read the instructions sent to themin a special booklet, we wish to say thatthey should not be discouraged for ap-parently it takes a certain number of at-tempts and a certain preliminary amountof attunement before the first contact ismade, and, thereafter, the contacts areeasy to make. Only by following theinstructions in the special booklet, whicheach new member receives at the end of the sixth week, will the final result beobtained. Once having made the contact,it is a simple matter to continue.

Many members report that havingmade a number of contacts at regularperiods, they now find that when it istime for another contact, they are in-

wardly called to be ready by a Cosmicmessage, that comes to them regardlessof how busy they may be or how activethey may be mentally. This proves thefine attunement that is eventually estab-lished through making a number of con-tacts.

Reports on the special Cathedral of the Soul sessions conducted by the Imperator have been highly interesting andshow them to be very successful. Thespecial ceremony of May 22 was widelyappreciated in all parts of the countryby thousands of members.

For the sake of those members livingin foreign lands and who do not receivethis magazine until thirty days after itis mailed from California, we are extend-ing the schedule of special sessions tocover two months in advance. There-fore, the special sessions conducted bythe Imperator for July and August willbe at the last period of the day on thefollowing dates: July 3, 11, 16, 21, and27, August 2, 8, 13, 18, and 31.

 To those who have contributed to the

Cathedral Welfare League, we wish tosay that a great amount of books, maga-zines, and other helpful matter is beingsent to prisoners in various prisons andsick persons in hospitals and institutions,and other helps are being sent to theshutins to enable them to enjoy manyof our blessings and privileges. The en-thusiastic letters received from these per-sons plainly show that the CathedralWelfare League is carrying on amongthe sick and the poor and the unprivi-leged a great work that is helping them

to find soul freedom and peace, eventhough they cannot find physical free-dom and the other things which all of you enjoy in life.
