The route beyond PLM (product lifecycle management)

Who am I?
I spent 20+ years developing engineering and manufacturing software:
1990s: Selling and developing Autodesk apps in Israel
2000s: SmarTeam, Enovia, Dassault… working on PDM/PLM tech
2010-12: Inforbix… developing new approach in cloud search and data analytics
2012-14: Autodesk… joining team working on PLM360 and search technologies
Now, I’m consulting companies at Beyond PLM.
Beyond PLM…
I started to blog in 2008 and didn’t stop…
For the last 6 years I wrote ~1800 blogs about PLM and related topics - technology, engineering, manufacturing...
It is about 1’000’000 words …and I learned a lot:What I learned about PLM from six years of daily blogging
Traditional PLM reached their limits
Challenge to keep large PLM
installations up to speed:
costly, slow ROI, hard to
integrate new functions.
PLM failed to build solution for SME manufacturing companies
Low cost and efficiency are
required to bring solutions for
SME. Multiple attempts to
build solutions failed…
How many enterprise companies will survive cloud migration?
Migration brings new:
Business,
Operation,
Technology and
Architecture changes
Step outside of RDBM boundary…
DB size
DB transaction
Response time
Single node DB problem
It won’t work...
What changed in manufacturing?
Global IP paradigm Small, agile, networkWirearchy picture credit.
Open Source Hardware (OSHW)
OSHW is a potentially big thing
that can change the existing
landscape of manufacturing.
Companies are changing their
perspective on IP
management...
OSHW can do to manufacturing what OSS did to software
Small is a new big…
1. Horizontal integration2. Technology Transformation3. Business dynamics
3 reasons why size won’t matter in the future
New functional breakdown…
Software is eating the world…
What will happen with traditional
enterprise system breakdown (eg.
ERP vs. PLM)? Will future PLM
order part for hardware
companies in the future?
System = hardware + electronic + software + service

Model everything
Mechatronic everywhere
Plastronic is a future
How collaborative economy change manufacturing?
Distributed mfg & material production
Peer-to-peer production
Personal manufacturing
Complete new model for engieering and manufacturing software
