The Rector’s Message

It’s good to be home. Home to family, the river I so love and to all of you.

It was an amazing time. We probably visited approximately 50 sites in 21 days: Roman and Byzantine ruins, Crusader fortresses, churches, synagogues, mosques, Gallipoli, Masada, Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found), the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, ancient and modern cities, Ottoman palaces, market places that have thrived for thousands of years. We swam in the Sea of Galilee, waded in the Jordan River, floated on the Dead Sea. We placed our hands on and prayed at the graffiti laden modern wall separating Jews and Palestinians in Bethlehem and we bowed our heads and hearts at the Western (Wailing) Wall in Jerusalem – both places where Pope Francis, after us, paused and prayed. Perhaps his heart also wept at those walls. I tucked a prayer for all of you at Trinity and Whitechapel in a crevice in the Western Wall.

The calm beauty and serenity of The Galilee, the lake-sized Sea of Galilee, and upper flow of the Jordan fed my heart and soul. And I gave thanks to God that Jesus had time there, where his ministry was birthed and flourished, in that place of abundant beauty before he turned his face toward Jerusalem. The Galilee contrasted so sharply with the crowds, the noise, the combination of the holy and the hostile that faced us in Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem. In the West Bank tension permeates the air all breathe and Uzi carrying Israeli Defense Forces and check-points are an everyday presence. On one occasion gunfire and the “boom” of a shock bomb down the street from us interrupted our night time sleep. While we were in Jerusalem, the Pope’s visit, followed by annual “Jerusalem Day” festivities, heightened both the excitement and the tension in that troubled city.

For me it really was a once in a life-time experience I will never forget. My love of the Old Testament and New Testament was generously nourished by walking in those places and on the land so long ago walked by Abraham and Sarah, by Hebrew Kings and God’s prophets, by Jesus and his disciples, by Peter and Paul and first century missionaries. The three professors (Old Testament, New Testament and Theology from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond) who led the trip deepened our learning experiences as did the Union students (M.Div. and Ph.D.) who provided presentations throughout our journey. We were connected with both Palestinian and Jewish scholars/clergy/speakers who provided mini-seminars for us on both historic and current developments affecting inter-faith dialogue and relationships between contemporary Muslims, Christians and Jews.

All in all it was a rich journey, but also a troubling one. I came away with the uneasiness that this part of the world in which I lived for three weeks is terribly dis-jointed, deeply troubled, profoundly conflicted both culturally and religiously. In this land I traveled, peace is illusive and on a wall in Bethlehem the image of a giant dove clothed in a flak jacket presents graphic truth at the present time. Bear with me as I reflect on the profound experiences of this trip in the weeks and months to come, which will be, a continuing leg in my journey to the Middle East.

Blessings, Torrence

Did You Know? We celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

A Big Thank You to All Who Helped Make

Homecoming so Wonderful! By: Lovey Jane Long of Grace

It takes more than a village to make our 2014 Homecoming such a celebratory occasion. It takes Grace, Trinity, and St. Mary’s Whitechapel, the three churches in the old Christ Church Parish of Lancaster County under the leadership of The Very. David May and The Rev. Torence Harmon coming together to make it so special. It takes the presence of The Right Rev. Susan Goff, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Virginia laying hands on 12 people to be confirmed and received, assisted by The Rev. Karen Woodruff, Mr. Bernie Schoeder, and The Very Rev. David H. May. It takes the handsome banners of our three churches leading the entrance of the clergy, carried by Parker kirkmyer, Grace; Christine Cammarata, Trinity; Robert Hedges, St. Mary’s. It takes the magic of Christ Church itself and the 300 or more of you who came together on a beautiful Sunday to celebrate and picnic. Here, I am attempting to acknowledged and thank the many people who made it happen. This effort is no doubt fraught with probable error as it is hard to know all who helped. If I missed your contribution, please let me know and forgive me. First, the awesome Homecoming Committee: David May, Betty Otley, Brandon Rohr, Mary Elsesser, Gail Tiesenga, Cathy Baumhardt, Sheila Nelson, Cliffe and Elizabeth Harris, Marivic Mitchell and Doug Biedenweg. They each contributed immensely and went well beyond what they were tasked to do. The lovely & handsome and attentive ushers: Tony Waring, Dee McSweeny-Tyson, Mark Clark, John O’Shaughnesy, Chris Ehring, Bob Poole, Bill Otley, Frank Burke, David Cheek, Gordon Nelson, Bill Elesser, Sid Tiesenga, Cliff Harris, Wes Edwards, Janice Shanks, Carol Roscher, Ed Ramsey, Bob Hardesty. Many of these people did a great deal more than just usher in preparation for Sunday. Others who did so much: Sandy Griffith, Jean Poole, Marge Gibson, Carol Sennott, Page Hunt, Poppy Cockrell, Albert Pollard, Craig Giese, Bob Murphy, Bill and Jannine Pennell, Chris Cammarata, Maile Sheeran Armstrong (the daughter of The Rev. Robert & Jane Sheeran who came from Roanoke to help), Nancy Clark, Anne Cheek, Martha Chase Johnson, Ammon Dunton, and the son & daughters of Frank & Bobbie Henderson. Each of you, and many more who are unnamed, made this a day we will all remember and thank God for.

Veterans Honored By: Bernie Schroeder

Capt. Jim Rudisill

About 45 veterans from around the area attended the Veterans’ Coffee held at Trinity Pavilion on May 30, 2014. Captain Jim Rudisill (US Army, Ret.) gave the keynote address and told amazing stories about the action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Capt. Rudisill is now a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has just entered the process of discernment for the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. Brig. Gen. Wes Edwards (USMC, Ret.), a member of Trinity, also spoke as Chairman of the Host Committee. The Veterans’ Coffee was the joint effort of Region 5 of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (Wounded Warrior Program) and Trinity and St. Mary’s Whitechapel. We hope to offer something similar several times a year. Many thanks to all from Trinity and St. Mary’s Whitechapel who provided food and offered such wonderful hospitality to our attendees.

Region II Meeting Report

from May 2114 Submitted by Delegate: Jane Fortin Delegates from Region II met on May 18, 2014 at Immanuel Church, King and Queen Courthouse. What a charming old church it is. The Rev. Ted Tulis, a former parishioner of St Mary’s Whitechapel, is interim rector there now. It was good to see him and his wife Judy again. There were two noteworthy reports given that afternoon. The first one concerned Shrine Mont Camps, (Trinity’s delegate, Pauli Dillard’s report on this is included in this newsletter). I shall cover the one provided by the Rev. Sven van Baars. Rev. van Baars and his task force presented a report on the Theological Education Fund. This fund is part of the budget of Region II. When originally created, the income from this fund was to help those in Region II seeking ordination as priests. The task force is considering expanding the kinds of recipients who might benefit from this to include deacons, lay ministers, attracting clergy to open positions in our Diocese, Christion educators, etc. There will be further discussion before final changes are made and voted on during subsequent Region II meetings.

Summertime ‘Oldies but Goodies’

at Trinity & SMWC It is “Oldies but Goodies” time for summertime music at SMWC & Trinity. Except on “special” theme Sundays in our liturgical life, we will focus on hymns from our special list of old time favorites during the summer months. Get ready to enthusiastically raise your voices to such familiar and nostalgic hymns as:

Amazing Grace; In the Garden; Sweet Hour of Prayer; The Old Rugged

Cross; Just As I Am; Be Thou my Vision; Stand up, stand up for Jesus;

Blessed Assurance; I Love to Tell the Story; How Great Thou Art; I’ve Got Peace Like a River; Jesus Loves Me;

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. If you have any old time favorites you would like to share or that we might have missed, please let us know at the parish office @ 462-5908 or ([email protected]. So, no excuses!! Sing your heart out this summer.

Last Chance for Name Tags For Chris Cammarata is ordering magnetic

backed name tags with the Episcopal logo on them for anyone who is interested. (Trinity or SMWC) The cost is approximately $10 each.

Please call or email Chris at 453-5408 or [email protected].

“SHOUT IT FROM THE MOUNTAIN”

Submitted By Delegate Pauli Dillard

A Diocesan capital campaign goal of $2 million to benefit Shrine Mont is underway, as reported by Kirk Gibson at the Region 11 meeting on the 18th. Half will go to provide camp scholarships to help more children and families to attend a Shrine Mont Camp, and the other half to renovate and replace cabins, create new staff housing and expand camp capacity and meeting space. Kirk brought a very impressive video with him, which I hope we can all have an opportunity to see. He is available to speak if asked, and I recommend we invite him to speak to a combined Trinity/SMWC event soon. For those of us who have never had the Shrine Mont experience, make a point to attend the Fall Camp for adults this year, or just take a trip to Orkney Springs and visit Shrine Mont on your own. Many parishes have a retreat up there every year, and that is another recommendation for our two parishes to think about. Shrine Mont and The Diocese of Virginia are a partnership. Shrine Mont provides housing and meals and The Diocese provides money for campers to attend. For more than 50 years, Shrine Mont Camps have been a focal point of ministry for the youth of the Diocese. The camps provide “a place apart” where many know God best. See for yourself what a wonderful place this is at www.shrinemontcamps.net.

In Appreciation Thank you so much, Trinity and Whitechapel,

for the really wonderful reception -- for the two of us -- on Sunday, May 4th.

We will really miss living among you. All these years have been good years,

and you both are the best. And...., from time to time we will see you again.

Anne and Howard Hanchey

Answer to Did You Know: At the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary to inform her that she would conceive Jesus, he also informed her that Elizabeth, her cousin, was already six months pregnant. June 24th comes three months after that Annunciation, thus completing 9 months of Elizabeth's pregnancy. The purpose of these festivals is not to celebrate the exact dates of these events but simply to commemorate them in an interlinking way.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION Lance Barton, a member of Trinity and Executive Director of the Northern Neck Food Bank, was the Speaker for Rappahannock Community College's Graduation event in May. Unfortunately, I missed the event since I was in the Middle East. However, I heard upon my return that he gave a fantastic and inspirational speech and that at the conclusion of it, he received a standing ovation from the graduates, their families and all in attendance - something that has not happened before in the college’s memory. How critical it is in these days and times to inspire this emerging generation who are our future. Thank you Lance!!

News of Young People at Trinity Directed by: The Rev. Karen Woodruff

Assistants: Carli Hanback and Ellie Hyde Email: [email protected] o

Ph: 462-7457

Congratulations to Trinity members Carli Hanback and Thomas Hyde who are upcoming graduates from Lancaster High School this month. They have worked so creatively and faithfully with the younger members of our Trinity family. In the fall, Carli will be starting Longwood University and Thomas the University of Virginia.

Our Sunday program for kids continues downstairs every Sunday all year round. It is a uniquely adapted Godly Play curriculum because we encourage a wide age range of kids helping kids. Probably half the time, we use other lesson plans based on the Gospel for the day or our mission project to Haiti. This summer we learning more about the lives of children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and beginning to raise money for their school.

Watch for announcements. Have a craft or skill to share with our young people?

I’d love to help that happen!!! Karen
