NEWS FROM NATIONAL SAR

NSSAR Patriot Biographies The National Society SAR is updating its database of information using many volunteers to post as much as possible on our Patriot Ancestors. If you could write up something about your Patriot Ancestor we can post it. If you write up a biography on your Patriot, including any supplementals, they will be shared with others who are searching for that ancestor. The biography must be between 200 to 500 words.

Thank you to everyone who has already sent in their Patriot Bios. Maryland completed 308 bios and many chapters including ours earned an Award. We can receive another with a 20% increase in submissions from the last time. Email the biography of your Patriot Ancestor to the National Society’s contact at: [email protected]. Check out the National website at: http://patriot.sar.org/.

MDSSAR Visits the Battle of Brooklyn Heights NY – August 2015

The MDSSAR sponsored a bus trip to Brooklyn, NY in August to participate with other SARs to honor the famous brigade—Smallwood’s Flying Camp—that went to NY to help Washington. The MD Society has supported original research at the State Archives with a generous $20,000 grant to research the lives of these 1,000 Marylanders who served so bravely with Washington. Author Linda Reno started this research with her publication of the MD 400 in 2008.

Color Guard Drummer Robert Ayres Memorial - July 2015

NRM members W. King Barnes, Jr. and Christos Christou, Jr. participated in the memorial to Color Guard member Robert J. Ayres who died in 2013. Rev. Christou performed the ceremony and the MDSSAR Color Guard fired musket salutes. His girlfriend Virginia Apyar, President National of the Daughters of 1812 remarked how Bobby would have enjoyed having so many gathered in his memory. His tombstone bears the symbols of both the SAR and 1812 and a drum.

George Washington’s Tomb at Mt. Vernon VA – July 2015

National Commander David Hoover of Bel Air, MD and the Maryland Color Guard had the honor of guarding the tomb of George Washington.

The Port of Baltimore welcomes L’Hermione to the U.S. – June 2015

David Embrey, his wife Vicki, & Robert Reyes greeted the replica French war-ship L’Hermione in the Baltimore and Annapolis harbor. The original ship brought the Marquis de Lafayette to America during the Revolutionary War at a pivotal time in the conflict.

George Washington’s Resignation Speech Unveiled in Annapolis – February 2015

Governor Larry Hogan invited the MDSSAR to participate in the State House unveiling of the original George Washington resignation speech. MDSSAR had contributed $5000 to the building of a display case. Governor Larry Hogan enjoyed the Color Guard participation as part of unveiling of the speech and opening of the restored Old Senate Chamber. The chamber looks as it did on on December 23, 1783—the day that Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief.

NEWS FROM MARYLAND C.A.R.

Thomas Johnson Society C.A.R. Visits the Washington Monument – October 2015 The Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter has had a long tradition of supporting the Maryland C.A.R. and especially the Thomas Johnson Society of the C.A.R. In October, Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore members helped to plant flower bulbs at Mt. Vernon Square with the TJS C.A.R. as part of the Maryland C.A.R.’s State Workday Project. Over 1000 bulbs were planted and will bloom in the spring. The children and adults enjoyed a box lunch after their hard work and then took a tour of the Maryland Historical Society to see the 1815 & 1915 time capsules that had been rediscovered during the Bicentennial renovations of the Washington Monument. The Monument is the first one to have been built in the nation commemorating the life of President Washington. While the 1815 time capsule was found in the foundation stone, the 1915 time capsule’s hiding spot—in the wall behind the bronze plaque—was unknown before the restoration. Both time capsules contained coins, newspapers, and other objects from their respective time periods.

Capt. Nicholas Ruxton Moore of the Light Dragoons – 1778 Capt. Nicholas Ruxton Moore resigned his commission after 2 years to return to his business at home. His letter & GW’s response via Jas. McHenry are in the George Washington Papers at the Library of Congress.

my Commiſsion as Capt. of Lt.Ds.
